Ways to run dir command in Process and get Output

Hello,
In one of the control in our web application, User can select any directory from his work area and can get list of directories and content of directories i.e. list of files. As working on file object is really slow so the performance is extremely poor. I am thinking of using Process object and run dir command for any directory selected by user and show the directory listing to user.
Do you guys think it would be possible

Its always good to work with IO buffer than low level file api. That should be irrelevant to the question as asked (if not then there might be other problems.)This is no way irrelevant but its a fact. Working with Java File api to traverse the content of the directory is really painful. Because we currently use file api to help user to traverse thru her work area.
BTW, there are two servers. One running the app and the other have all users work areas. User can traverse the workareas content by using something \\server1\workarea1\user1\folder1 etc... in the app to see the content of any folder.A "server" in this context would be an "application" such as something like tomcat. Your client would then ask the "server" for information.
In your case you are dealing with another file system via the windows remote file system access. So per my question it is not another "server".A server is what providing service to a client and in our case its a app server with a web app in it. The users use the web app to manage their work area(which is another file server).
The app server and file server and physically two separate machines.
So again, I am back to my first question, how can run dir command using Process object and get the buffer.
Till now, I have done this
ProcessBuilder pb = new ProcessBuilder("cmd", "dir", "c:/");
        pb.directory( new File("C:/temp")); // Or whatever directory you want for cwd
        Map<String,String> env = pb.environment();
        env.put("PATH", "C:/temp");
        try {
             Process process = pb.start();
               InputStream inStream = process.getInputStream();
               new AsyncPipe(process.getErrorStream(), System.out).start();
             new AsyncPipe(process.getInputStream(), System.out).start();
             final int returnCode = process.waitFor();
             System.out.println("Return code is " + returnCode);
               System.out.println("\nExit value = " + inStream + "\n");
          } catch (Exception e) {
               e.printStackTrace();
          }However it simply opens command prompt

  • Slow processing and getting opening errors/warnings

    I've modified the PDF Binder sample to get a plugin that would open PDF's and Tif files, and save them as PDF/A-1b (code below).
    It's working. The problem: it's processing too slow (compared with the Actions batch processing)... and I've been getting warnings/and errors about "The imput file is corrupt or of an unknown/unsupported type" type. This is stopping my batch process until I click OK, and the it continues.
    I am trying to process a few thousand of tif files now. I tried first to use the Batch processing capability built in the Acrobat X... an it works, but only with the first 255 documents in the folder... then gives an "insufficient disk space" message for the rest of the files in the directory.
    So, 2 questions: Does anyone knows why it is so slow processing the tiff files and... how I can make my code "silent" so it does not wait for the OK after the message??
    Thanks in advance.

        Implementation
    /**    This sample implements a method to convert multiple files into PDF
      and bind the PDFs into one PDF file .
        This sample shows developers how to grammatically implement To-PDF file
      converson functionality.  Basically, the code uses AVConversionToPDFHandler
      to convert files to PDF and PDDocInsertPages()to combine PDF files.
      This plug-in is designed to run from a menu item, and by setting bEcho = false
      it may be run without any graphics user interface on the screen. Therefore, it
      can be executed from other programs such as C IAC, VB IAC, and JavaScript
      to meet enterprise workflow needs.
        How to run it :
        - This sample adds a menu item "PDF Binder" under the Acrobat SDK submenu. Two ways to
        execute it: 1) click the menu item to run the program using a fixed file location
        hard coded; 2) press the shift key and click the menu item to choose a folder where
        files to be converted are located.
        - Without folder selection, this original code is to convert and bind files in a
        directory    C\test\PDFBinder for Win, or a folder   MacHD:test:PDFBinder for Mac.
        You can copy the test files in the project's testfiles folder to the appropriate location
        for testing. You may locate files to be converted in another directory/folder, and
        specify the location in the string variable PDFBinderFolder in the code.
        - When you have the files to be converted ready in the specified location,
        run Acrobat 6 menu Advanced->AcrobatSDK->PDF Binder to start the operation.  There are
        echo messages informing you of the operation start and end, but you can change and
        rebuild the code to turn off the display on screen.
        - An output file PDFBinderOutput.pdf in the same location is created
        when the program succeeds. A text log file  PDFBinderLog.txt in the same
        location records the process and results.
        -  You can set bEch = false in the code to turn off any display on the screen.
        This is necessary when you  call the menu function from within other programs
        of C IAC, VB IAC, JavaScript.
        -  An optional file filter is used to pre-process the files. The filter only allows
        the files with predefined types to be processed. You can change the file type list
        as you wish. Using a filter may ensure a smooth automation process, since you can put
        only well-tested file types in the filter. To turn off the filter, you can set
        gPDFBinderFileFilter = "" or not to define USE_FILE_FILTER
        - Note this is a sample only, developers need to make further improvement for
        their actual use. For example, you can set up a list of files to use the method for
        the conversion and binding. And you can add code to handle special file types.

    There are some options for various APIs to run "kinda silent" - but again, Acrobat is designed for INTERACTIVE use…so "completely silent" isn't really an option.
    As for speed – you'd need to be MUCH MORE specific about where your slow downs are.  Have you profiled?

  • How to convert String "(50-10)" to number and get output as 40 as a number.

    Hi,
    I have a string with formula, eg: String formula="(ABC-DEF)";
    I replaced the values of ABC and DEF in the above string now I have formula="(50-10)";
    How can I calculate the above value and get output (40)as a number like int or double.
    Regards
    Alex.
    Edited by: AlexRaju on Dec 8, 2009 10:11 AM

    Values for ABC and DEF are coming from different java collections like HashMap or ArrayList etc. The formulas can be complex which need some string manipulations and atlast I will get a string like "(50-10)" or "(20+(Math.SQRT(25)/Math.Power(2,3)))". Here all the numbers are values for variables like ABC or DEF coming from different hashmaps and arraylists based on different conditions.
    Thanks
    Alex.

  • Best way to close a Runtime.exec() process and how to handle closing it?

    I have multiple Runtime.exec() Processes running and am wondering what the best way it is to close them and take care of closing the resources. I see that Process.destroy() seems to be the way to terminate the Process - is finalize() the best way to close anything in that Process?
    Thanks

    I was involved with your other thread, so I think I know what you are trying to do.
    All Dr's answers are correct.
    Now you have a program A written by you that does Runtime.exec() of multiple instances
    of another program B written by you. You want A to somehow tell B to exit.
    You must use some kind of Inter Process Communication. If this is the only interraction
    between the two programs I can suggest two options. If you anticipate more
    interraction, you may want to look at other means (RMI, for instance, which was proposed
    by EJP in the other thread for starting B, is also useful in exchanging info).
    Solution 1:
    Start a thread in B and read stdin. A will write to stdin a command, such as QUIT.
    When B reads it, it does System.exit().
    Solution 2:
    Start a SocketServer in B that accepts connections on a separate thread.
    When A wants B to exit, it connects to it and writes a command such as QUIT.
    When B reads it, it does System.exit().
    You may note that QUIT is not the only command you can send from A to B, in case you will need more.

  • Running ssh command from java and then answering password prompt

    Hi,
    I have a situation that has not solved yet. I am running ssh command from unix terminal without any problem, and then i enter password.
    For example :
    [oracle@fuata]:/export/home/oracle> ssh -N [email protected] -L 9901:127.0.0.1:9999
    Password:
    It is working. I have question that how can i perform this in java? I am thinking that i can run ssh command by using Runtime Class, it is ok. But how can i answer the password? I am a bit confused. Is there any example looks like this?
    Thanks for responses.

    futi wrote:
    Thanx. Firstly i insisted to do this without jsch but actually this is harder than jsch. I edit some of code pieces PortForwardingL.java and could run it. It works problem-free. Could you say why you "insisted" on this approach. It can't be for speed+ since jsch is very fast. It can't be for portability+ since jsch is portable but the use of Runtime.exec() requires the installation of ssh software. It can't be because of limitations+ since jsch is a fully featured library. It can't be for security+ since jsch is secure. It can't be for ease of use+ since jsch is much easier to use than ssh with Runtime.exec(). Unless it's a licensing issue, it can't be for commercial+ reasons since jsch is free. The only reason I can think of why one would "insisted" on this approach is if it is for some college project.

    Please help..................

    to make your database in archive log mode you need to give a downtime of your database for this you can do following steps.
    if you are using spfile
    1. shutdown the database.
    2. startup in mount mode
    3. use command 'alter database archivelog';
    4. specify the archive log location using command
    ' alter system set log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=location_path';'
    5. specify archive log format as
    'alter system set archive_log_format=your choice;'
    6. enable the archive log dest using ' alter system set log_archive_dest_state_1=enable;'

    I need to run internet explorer to access new billing software,  what is the best way to do so and is it safe to run this on macbook and ipad if possible??

    You can't run IE on an iPad and the only way to use it on a Mac, since it's been discontinued for years for the Mac OS, is to install Windows either via Boot Camp or via running Windows as a virtual machine using something such as Parallels Desktop (my personal preference).

  • Execute dir command and get output

    Hi,
    Is it possible to execute a command such as dir,md or copy using a java prorgam.Plz tell me how to do this.
    Thanks a lot,

    You can get that dir info from java.io.File.listFiles(), of course.
    But if you just want to run OS commands you can do it with java.lang.Runtime:

    ==================================================================================
    This Java program is very simple. It runs the a.exe using the method Runtime.getRuntime().exec and gets input for a.exe from a JTextPane and shows the output in the same JTextPane.
    If my a.exe represents the binary code of the first C program the text in the JTextPane is the correct output of the a.exe. But, if my a.exe represents the binary code of the second C program, the JTextPane shows the messages ( "Marcinho e Danny\n", "Te\n", "Vida\n", "Marciorja: %d.\n") after I enter the value claimed by the scanf.
    I tested my Java program running programs that require input and all have the same behavior:.
    What can I need to do to solve this bug?
    I read other posts with the same problem and nobody answers what is the problem.
    I'LL pay 10 Duke dollars to the first that answers me.

    The second C program with the statement fflush( stdout ) produces the right output.
    #include<stdio.h>
    void leia();
    main()
    int x = 20;
    int y = 2;
    printf( "Marcinho e Danny\n" );
    printf( "Te\n" );
    printf( "Vida\n" );
    fflush( stdout ); //added statement.
    printf( "Marciorja: %d.\n", x * y );
    scanf( "%d", &x ); //This is the statement added to the latter C program.
    but what can I do to run C programs that doesn't flush the stdout?

  • Running Interactive commands in java and displaying the output.

    Hi All,
    I'm running a sample code to execute a user defined command (cmd1) and display the results. The output of the command when executed in command prompt is
    (1) Executing the command cmd1
    (2) Do you want to continue(Y/N)_ <waits for user input>
    (3) Based on user input
    (Y) Displays the results
    (N) Interrupted
    But i'm facing problem when i execute the below code. When the results are being displayed instead of displaying line(1) and (2) and then waiting for the input- the code waits for the input and then only displays the results.
    O/p
    inside output
    inside input
    y (------ gets the input and then only displays the results).
    Executing the command cmd1
    Do you want to continue(Y/N)
    results
    Please help out how to resolve this issue.
    Thanks.

    Console input is line buffered. This means you only get the first character a line after the newline has been inputed.
    The same thing happen if you just type on the console.
    I am not aware of any simple way around this.
    IDEs get around this by changing the application run so that the input/output is captured as it happens and sent over a socket connection.
