WD Table onleadselect method - button diability

Question

Hi all,
In benefits application once the user selects a medical or dental plan, he will be taken to plans within it by individual vendors. Once the user selects a plan like HMO, he should select the dependent coverage too, so that he selects the dependent coverage and then he clicks on button "Dependent Coverage" . This button is always enabled, but for some selections I dont need this button to be enabled.
So here is my main controller, VcBenefitsPlanDetail, and Views are DetailCostCreditView, ContainerPlanDetailView. I created a value attribute in context of contriller, mapped it to both views. I created a method and assigned this to table on lead select. Within that I wrote the following lines of code
String Default1 = null;
Default1 = wdContext.currentOfferDetailCostCreditElement().getDepcv();
if (Default1 == "DEF")
          wdThis.wdGetVcBenefitsPlanDetailController().wdGetContext().currentContextElement().setDepEnable(false);
          else {
               wdThis.wdGetVcBenefitsPlanDetailController().wdGetContext().currentContextElement().setDepEnable(true);
And for button, I assigned this value attribute to button enable fieldm, within container view.
But this code didnt seem to work at all,
Now, I have these following questions,
1) Can I access the current context selection like this? or should I iterate one by one?
2) When the row select happened, does this method execute and take and can pass the depenable value to the button? Or should I have to write this code in wdmodifyview??
Please suggest where I am going wrong?

You should never compare two string objects using "==" instead you have ot use equals("DEF") or equalIgnoreCase("DEF") //If you want ignore case;
Only primitive data types,like int or double data types should be compared using "==" operator
