We have too many devices sharing the same Apple ID.  I want my sons' devices to have their own now.  How can I accomplish this?

We currently have 4 Apple devices in addition to our laptop and desktop: Family iPad, Mom's iPhone, Son1iPhone, Son1School iPad.  Soon we will add Son2School iPad, and eventually Son2iPhone and DadiPhone.
We had Son1 use our "family" Apple ID when he got his school iPad set up.  I wanted to be able to monitor purchases and keep my VISA number under my control. We also wanted to be able to share the apps, games and music we buy for our family. But  our device info is merging in unhelpful ways, (i.e. his contact list names override mine in my iPhone; when he tries to use iMessage from his iPad he ends up appearing as my identity instead of his... stuff like that.)  With Son2 soon to get a school iPad, I need to know how to separate identities, yet not have to buy etextbooks over and over when we have already purchased them for Son1.

If you create a new ID for your son, he will not be able to share the purchased content that you already bought. He will have to buy it again using his own Apple ID. It's not quite as simple as just creating a new Apple ID if you want to share those purchases.
He can use the ID for FaceTime, messages and contacts but if you want him to be ba able to download the purchased content again, do not use the new ID for that.
This will give you a pretty good idea of what you want to do.

It sounds that you are running the same iCloud account with two phones.  I recommend you to create a different iCloud account and you should be all set.

  • How to set up imessages on 3 devices sharing the same apple id?

i have an ipod and iphone and an ipad.  i have one apple id for all of them.  when i did the ios 5 update it asked me for my apple id to set up icloud, thus being the same for all.
however i have encountered a problem.  when trying to set up imessages by default it uses my apple id email address. so all my devices is trying to use the SAME email address for imessages.  thats not goint to work because it will be messageing itself! HELP! it doesnt give you the option to change email addresses so what do i do???? how do i set up 3 completely different imessage accounts and still beable to sync between devices??

Facetime only works with two devices at a time. You can have the same Apple ID, but the two devices can't have the same email address. Get a new gmail account. Normally you use wifi for connection, however, with iOS 6 and an iPad 3 you can use cellular.

  • Change Apple ID on one device only. Currently have multiple devices sharing the same apple id.

    Hi
I currently have three devices sharing one Apple ID. Ipad (Work) Iphone (Wife) & Ipod Touch (Son)
I have purchased an iPhone for Christmas and want to migrate the ipod to a new Apple ID. I haven't created the an ID for the phone yet but just wondered what the easiest solution would be? Would it be a case of creating a new ID on the phone, then signing into the iPod with this ID. I understand whatever has been downloaded to the Ipod will no longer be available, but wondered if there were any solutions to this problem.

You can have media from more than one account on an iOS device. Note that
    - Apps are locked to the account that purchased them.
    - To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.
I would set up the iPhone by:
iOS: Transferring information from your current iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device
Then on the iPod yocan either erase it and set it with the new ID or:
Use the new ID on iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
    Settings>GameCenter
and Settings>iCloud if you want to have separate Contacts Calendar and some other things.
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases if you want to

As deggie said, you are the victim of Activation Lock.  Activation Lock is described here:

Either you need to contact the previous owner to release the phone from Find My iPhone, or if you cannot contact the previous owner, it is likely you received a stolen iPhone and it will be useless to you.

  • If i have multiple iPhones and Mac Mini sharing the same Apple ID, can I use Facetime between the devices?

if i have multiple iPhones and Mac Mini sharing the same Apple ID, can I use Facetime between the devices?

Yes, but if you want these devices to have complete capability of calling each other they each must have their own separate, individual e mail address.  If they don't have individual e mail addresses, the i phones will be able to call each other because you'll be using their  individual phone numbers -- the Mac mini will be able to call the i phones, but, the iphones will not be able to call the Mac mini.  This is because the iphones will be using the mini's e- mail address to make the call, and if they have the same e mail address, they will think they are calling themselves, so the call will not connect.
So, the way I see it is,  if you keep all of the email addresses the same, the only thing you'll loose is the ability of the iphones to call the mini.
EDIT:  Thinking about it, my first sentence needs to be modified.  Your iphones can share an email address but it must be different from the Mac mini address.
This isn't rocket science, but it can make your head spin. LOL

Yes, you stop using the same Apple ID under Settings > iCloud.

I'm relatively new to Mac and want to try and get the most out of the new MacBook Air.
My wife and I have been sharing the same Apple ID. We both have iPhones - she has a 5 and I've got a 4S.
We only have one copy of iTunes and we have been sharing the account. (She doesn't really use the computer for anything beyond writing the odd weekend assignment.)
Would I be better off setting her up with her own and making her as a separate user on the computer? Would this require much work?
In recent times with updates, we have a few problems with the duplication of texts and that sort of thing. Both of our texts are stored on the computer and that sort of thing. Also, sometimes texts I send her are sent through to me  from her, if that makes any sense.
Anyway, I don't really want to overly complicate matters when it comes to accounts etc, but I wanted to know if a fresh Apple ID would be the best thing or even a new user?
Any tips etc would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks in advance

I have this question too (0) Reply

Your question is almost too much a personal one, begging the question "do we (husband and wife) feel comfy sharing one account on the Mac"   maybe thats why nobody answered you.
It doesnt complicate anything, but it adds steps for switching accounts on the Mac/ purchases etc. of course
since your question is mostly personal, ..I wont answer THAT part of it, but creating a new account is easy.....messing with switching back and forth is also a personal preference 'issue' as well.   I prefer to keep things simple, but...........you and yours,  I dont know.......

  • We had one family apple id. I want to keep all devices on the same apple id for itunes but separate ones for everything else.  How do I change the others now.  We have 3 iphones and an ipad.

We had one family apple id.  I want to keep all devices on the same apple id for itunes but separate for everything else on the cloud. How can I change the other apple ids now? We have 3 iphones and an ipad.

Hi, thank you for this post.  I hope you might be able to help me too?
I am relatively new to apple (have an iPad) and having been a PC user for years I was pleasantly surprised with the apple experience and am now trying to work out the best set up for me, my husband and young son as I am buying them both of them apple products this Christmas.  New Mac laptop/ ipad for hubby and then an ipod touch for my son oh and a new mac laptop for me. We are also thinking of moving from Blackberries to iPhones. Yes we seem to be hooked! but i am unsure about the home family set up and how to replace my PC network that I run off an 8TB server.
In reading the forums I keep seeing people talk about problems they have with two apple IDs and trying to merge them. I have also heard about a family ID allowing us to share apps legally.  I am really nervous of setting us up wrong and then having problems later and hence i am now looking for some advice on how to share as much as we can legally but also make usage practical and not invading each others privacy. thoughts so far:
Music - I think we are happy to share the same music and access using one ID (we currently don't buy much music from apple but have lots of CDs we share).
Photos - It would be nice to share photos - as long as my son or husband cannot accidentally delete photos of mine (which is my biggest concern). I currently load all camera photos onto my 8TB storage box as the network owner and my husband has full access to copy any photo to his laptop but can never delete the original copies by accident.
Apps - If possible i would like us to share these but they are cheap enough these days to separate if really needed. Would be good to share licence for pages etc though
cloud, contacts, facetime, email -  this is what is making me consider separate IDs or learning how to have multiple users in one apple ID - I do not want to have to share synced contacts with my husband. I have near 300 contacts now through work etc and he will not want them plus i will not want his or him being able to delete mine by mistake. and then for email and facetime, well I want to give him his privacy so I do not receive his messages etc. especially now that we are considering switching to iPhones
Then last but not least, i don't know the best solution for my son. he is only 7 years old so even though I don't want to pay for things again I don't want him being able to download "just any" app from the purchased icon in Appstore. Also, is there a child friendly setting to prevent him from viewing inappropriate content on the internet?
Appreciate I have asked a lot of questions here but I am looking for any genuine advice out there. Thank you or other potential advisers in advance.

  • HT204380 If I have 3 devices using the same apple ID, can I FaceTime between them?

As it says on the tin.
2 x iPads and an iPhone all sharing the same Apple ID and icloud account.
Can we FaceTime between the 3 devices? .....and how. Calls drop straightaway every time: user busy.

Yes you can do it. I do it with 4 different devices all using the same Apple ID.
You need to associate different email addresses for each device in order to use those email addresses as the "contact at" email address. The reason the calls are dropping on you now is that what you are trying to do is like calling yourself on your own phone.
You can also create new iCloud accounts on each device simply to use for FaceTime, but I'm guessing that the users of the other two devices have their own email addresses which will make this work for you quite easily.
Take a look at this for more information.

  • If I have 3 family memebers sharing the same account, can we create sub accounts to seperate their log in and they have access to music already purchased?

If I have 3 family members sharing the same account, can we create sub accounts to seperate their log in and they have access to music already purchased?

There is no such thing as "sub-accounts".
Multiple Apple ID's can be used on a single device.
Created unique Apple ID's for each user and use those Apple ID's on the appropriate devices from iCloud and iMessage.  This will not affect the media on the device.

  • Can I have a Face Time conversation between two Apple devices using the same Apple ID?

Can I have a Face Time conversation between two Apple devices using the same Apple ID?

Yes, you can, but the two devices can't have the same e mail address associated with both.  Each, device needs its own unique e mail ADR.  In your case, the iPod can call your iPhone if you use the phone number, but the iPhone can not call your iPod because it must use the e mail address, and if the email address is the same on both, the iPhone will think it's calling itself, so the call will not go through.
