Weak SSL ciphers on Unity 5.0 server during a security scan
Hello,
We received informaition from our security team when they did a scan on our Unity server...."the remote host supports the use of SSL ciphers that offer weak encryption or no encryption at all" I have found some articles on the web (Microsoft) to edit the registry key so that nothing lower than 128 bit encryption is accepted. I am looking for a Cisco paper to agree or disagree with this...can anyone help?
Thank you.
So, this isn't an uncommon security alert when you have your system scanned. One thing to keep in mind is the placement of your server and who/what it is accessed for. In any case, you're not likely to find a Cisco doc that references this specifically. Instead, if you really want to move forward with making the appropriate registry changes then you'll want to open a TAC case and find out if this is supported or not. In terms of further info on your issue:
There is a McAfee article about making websites more secure. It is here: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/MakeWebsiteMcAfeeSecured.aspx
Your alert is referenced as follows:
Vulnerability Name: Weak Supported SSL Ciphers Suites
Description
The remote host supports the use of SSL ciphers that offer either weak encryption or no encryption at all. This vulnerability is valid for all SSL/TLS sessions that are passing sensitive information.
PCI defines strong cryptography, for secret key based systems, as anything above 80 bit encryption.
Solution
The solution to this is very simple but requires registry tweak again. Following are the steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regedt32 or type regedit, and then click OK.
In Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders
\SCHANNEL\Ciphers
Under the Cipher key, there are several Ciphers.
Locate the ciphers which have encryption less than 128 bit.
Create DWORD values named Enabled and Value 0 for each of them, just as the previous case.
For convenience, I have marked them with red arrows in the picture above.
System Restart is NOT required for this.
Now the server is secured.
The above mentioned security issues are the major ones that most of the systems have. However other than this, there may be some easy and minor vulnerabilities like:
Using robots.txt in the pages. (Generally inserted by Web Marketing team to track user hit).
Directory Scanner: Common directories are revealed. This can be resolved by URL rewriting and setting “Directory Browsing” off.
Note: For the above vulnerabilities, minor registry tweaks will be necessary. So it is strongly recommended to back up the registry before doing anything. By any chance if something gets messed up, just delete the SCHANNEL key and restart the machine, the key will be auto-generated.

JavaVM Component patch 19618575 was applied to our Oracle 11.2.0.3 DBMS Windows 8 server and a security scan was done showing no vulnerabilities.
However, patch 19618575 was rolled back by Bundle Patch 34 (20227195) and Oracle released another JavaVM Component patch 20227195. We applied the new JavaVM patch successfully and the System Admin did the security scan which showed there was still a vulnerability for the JavaVM Component.
Is anyone else having this problem.Richard,
I have just applied patch to upgrade from Portal 3.0.9 to 3.0.9.8.1 (Patch applied to loginserver and portal schema) and the External Applications that were previously set up have gone from the portlet.
Does this relate to your note at the bottom:
"Minor issues with Bulk action. 1840420 CUSTOM WRITTEN EXTERNAL AUTH MODULE NEED TO BE UPDATED AFTER 3.0.9 UPGRADE SSOXOID.PKB DOESN'T LOAD.
External authentication modules that were written before 3.0.9 need to be updated after upgrading to 3.0.9. ssoauthx.pks is updated in 3.0.9 and contains additional routines that need to be implemented." ??
If I go to the "Login Server Administration" portlet and select the link "Administer External Applications" I get a list of 5 External Applications that have previously been set up.
If I go back to the Home Page and select "customize" on the "External Applications" portlet I get the message "Your Login Server administrator has not registered any external applications".
Does that mean I should just run 'ssoauthx.pks' & 'ssoxoid.pkb' or do I need to do something else ??
Thanks

Remote host supports the use of SSL ciphers that offer weak encryption
Dear All,
Our Internal security audit suggests to avoid the use of Week SSL ciphers for our SAP PI 7.0 servers.
We have followed the SAP note 510007 - Setting up SSL on Web Application Server ABAP
as mentioned in the point 6 we have added below parameter in the instance profile of application server and restarted our server but still the issue is not resoved.
ssl/ciphersuites=MEDIUM:HIGH:EXPORT:!LOW:!eNULL
Clients are accessing our PI server through SAP Web dispatcher.
Kindly suggest the action to be taken to resolve the issue.
Please find the below comment from Audit.
The remote host supports the use of SSL ciphers that offer weak encryption.
Note: This is considerably easier to exploit if the attacker is on the same physical network

Security Scan found Weak and Medium strength ciphers port 389&636
After a recent security scan on one of our Apple Servers running 10.9.5 (Mavericks) it has reported weak and medium strength ciphers on port 389&636 and also that SSLv2 and SSLv3 is enabled. The Server is running Profile Manager and therefore also Open Directory although we are not really using Open Directory for authentication as we have AD within the organisation.
My question is how can I modify Open Directory to only use HIGH ciphers and not MEDIUM or LOW? I have found the httpd-ssl.conf file but that is only listening on port 443. I have also found the slapd.conf but can't see where I would make the change.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ThanksSo would you believe it I've managed to get it working. I wanted to see if Yosemite suffered from the same 'issues' that Mavericks does with SSLv2 & SSLv3 support. Also the weak ciphers bsing used. Well they scannex that server and found exactly the same 'issues' as before. So I started working on it this morning editing slapd.conf, slapd.conf.default, slapd_macosxserver.conf and apache-ssl.conf it might sound overkill but I thought what the ****. I added the following lines to all conf files:
SSLProtocol ALL -SSLv2
SSLCipherSuite HIGH:!SSLv2:!ADH:!aNULL:!eNULL:!NULL
TLSCipherSuite HIGH:MEDIUM:+TLSv1:!SSLv2:+SSLv3
and and it worked. Passed the scan with flying colours however might need to mod SLLv3 to keep theM happy.
I need to replicate this on a Mavericks Server so hope the jist is the same.
thanks for the advice Linc. -
How To Restrict SSL Ciphers for iCal and Address Book

Two-Way SSL does not work until "Use Server Certs" is selected on client
We have a web service application and a client application. Both applications are deployed in WebLogic 10.3. The web service application is secured by Two-Way SSL. When the client attempts to access the service, we got the following error logs on the server side:
<Dec 8, 2009 3:25:42 PM EST> <Warning> <Security> <BEA-090508> <Certificate chain received from ... was incomplete.>
CertPathTrustManagerUtils.certificateCallback: certPathValStype = 0
CertPathTrustManagerUtils.certificateCallback: validateErr = 4
CertPathTrustManagerUtils.certificateCallback: returning false because of built-in SSL validation errors
We got the same error even if the WebLogic 10.3 domain on the client side uses the same identity and trust keystores as the server side.
The problem was solved when we selected Environment -> Servers -> <server> -> SSL, expanded "Advanced" and selected "Use Server Certs". Could anyone tell me what "Use Server Certs" does to make the difference?
Another question is how we can invoke this web service in a Java application since "Use Server Certs" solution only works for web application deployed in weblogic."Use Server Certs" means that a client application running within Weblogic will use the WL managed server's identity certificate as its client certificate. Otherwise, the client application is responsible for selecting the keystore, and presenting the certificate as part of the handshake.
This is a great feature in 9 & 10; client SSL was much more difficult in WL 8.
If you are using a standalone client application to invoke anything over 2-way SSL, you are responsible for presenting the certificate. For instance, if you invoke the page from your browser, your browser can maintain client certificates and you'll get a popup to select which cert to use. -
SSL with virtual hosting in Weblogic Server 5.1(WLS5.1)
Hello,
I am tasked with implementing a virtual hosting situation that must
use SSL. It goes like this: https://www.aaa.com, https://www.bbb.com
and https://www.ccc.com all having separate IPs. These URLs must
forward the request to the same WebLogic Server instance. The problem
is each URL must have its own certificate while WLS 5.1 only uses one
certificate per instance.
I was thinking about using a proxy server such that all three Web
servers that would host the URLs would be sent to a proxy server which
would redirect to the WLS 5.1 instance.
My questions are, would this be feasible using WLS 5.1 as the Web
Server and again WLS as the App Server? How secure is this
arrangement? Is it preferable to use another vendor's software as the
WebServer(IPlanet, Apache)Hi Andy,
I think a good approach for you would be to use a proxy server --
browser -> proxy that supports virtual hosting -> WebLogic
Use a proxy which supports virtual hosting, and which can have a separate
certificate bound to each virtual host.
That way you can do SSL between the browser and the proxy, and you can
have the proxy do cleartext to WebLogic.
This situation gets around WebLogic's limitation of allowing only one
certificate per instance of the server.
You could also use 5.1 as the proxy in the following manner:
Run 3 instances of Weblogic, each as a proxy server, each bound to a
different IP address and DNS name, having its own certificate --
one instance for aaa.com, another for bbb.com, and a third for ccc.com
Then have each of these three instances of WebLogic proxy to your "app
server" instance of WebLogic on the backend.
Hope this makes sense.

SSL connection between Dist Auth UI Server and Access Manager
Hi,
I have a Dist Auth UI Server installed in Web Server 7 and working properly, but now i want to configure it to talk with Access Manager with a secure port.
I have configured Access Manager (also deployed in Web Server 7) in a secure port (443). I have requested and installed the server certificate in the Access Manager Web Server instance and also the root entity certificate.
My question is: how must i configure the UI Server to communicate with the Access Manager Server in a secure way and trust the certificate that the WS of the AM presents ?
Regards,There have been a few reports of the same behaviour with other customers - specifically with the handling of the encoding of "+" characters to " ". It relates to how cookie encoding/decoding is performed (as you have already observed).
The solution for these customers was the following:
=> AM server/client side:
Ensure that com.iplanet.am.cookie.encode=false in AMConfig.properties and AMAgent.properties on all systems.
=> AM client (UWC) side:
- Set <property name="encodeCookies" value="false"/> in /var/opt/SUNWuwc/WEB-INF/sun-web.xml. This will prevent UWC from trying to urldecode the cookie it receives and therefore stops it turning the + into a space e.g.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE sun-web-app PUBLIC '-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Sun ONE Application Server 7.0 Servlet 2.3//EN' 'file:///net/wajra.india.sun.com/export/share/dtd/sun-web-app_2_3-1.dtd'>
<sun-web-app>
<property name="encodeCookies" value="false"/>
<session-config>
<session-manager/>
</session-config>

OSX Server VPN L2TP secure?
i am using osx server v2.21 (169) and using the L2TP with shared key VPN to connect my iphone to my home server, and browse through my home internet connection...
i have read numerous articles on the internet, and some here on the apple support communities that say L2TP VPN on OSX Server is not secure....
is that really the case?
thanksThere is no perfect security. Ever. A sufficiently determined attacker can and will succeed against anything you can do, given that sooner or later somebody involved will make an opsec mistake somewhere. Or the existing attacks against MD5, RC4 and SSL/TLS security — attacks including BEAST, CRIME Lucky 13, etc — will continue to be "weaponized".
Firewalls and VPNs only get you so far, and it's common for attackers to use a variety of attacks to try to breach those; to bypass the network security. So-called "spearphishing" tries to get somebody on the network to breach security for the attacker. The best VPN and the best firewall are worth nothing if you have Java lit in your web browser and the Java JVM sandbox gets breached (again), or if you receive and open a document that contains malware, for instance.
Facebook and other entities were recently breached using what was known as a watering hole attack, and that was only spotted based on detecting "odd" out-bound network traffic. The attack got around the firewalls and the VPNs and the rest of the security, and was active on the organizations' internal networks.
If you're securing nuclear secrets or large sums of money or exceedingly embarassing or sensitive data, then you definitely and certainly do need to focus on this stuff, and you're going to be spending time and effort and money on making your organization harder (emphasis on harder) to attack. But attacks will continue.
If you're dealing with a home network or a typical a small business network, then you just don't want to be the lowest of the low-hanging fruit around, and you want to avoid opsec mistakes such as open ports or weak passwords, and you don't want to give the good folks of the Internet reasons to attack you. You want to be not worth attacking, or not as "fun" and not as valuable to attack.
Even if your security is not attacked, a DDoS can still ruin your day.
As I've mentioned elsewhere, I much prefer using a VPN server in a gateway-firewall-router device — as VPNs and NAT don't mix very well — and I do use private certificate authority chains. But in terms of attacks? Keep your software and your security current, review your logs and your rules, DMZ any services you provide to "outside", maintain and verify backups — those backups can be your recovery path from a breach — and start looking at "odd" or "unexpected" outbound traffic, too. VPNs are just part of avoiding the mess of a cleanup. -

Can't get Google CAL to work with iCAL "Server with a secure communication unavailable"
I can't add my google account to iCal...
Error message:
"Server with a secure communication unavailable"
"Your calendar acct isn't on a server that can receive your calendar information securely.."
I have had this work just fine in the past, had to remove my accounts a while back, decided to add them back, and this error keeps popping up...
Can anyone help??
Googled and Searched this forum with no success. Found some suggestions but nothing worked.
Thanks,I have used the CalDAV option from the pop list and the server option is : https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/[email protected]/user , replace with your email the underlined
I've found this here . -
try
MailMessage mail = new MailMessage();
SmtpClient SmtpServer = new SmtpClient("smtp.gmail.com");

Given Below is the Error.. The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.5.1 Authentication Required.
Solution:
The error might occur due to following cases.
case 1: when the password is wrong
case 2: when you try to login from some App
case 3: when you try to login from the domain other than your time zone/domain/computer (This
is the case in most of scenarios when sending mail from code)
There is a solution for each
solution for case 1: Enter the correct password.
Recomended: solution for case 2: go to
security settings at the following link https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps and
enable less secure apps . So that you will be able to login from all apps.
solution 1 for case 3: (This might be helpful) you need to review the activity. but reviewing the activity will not be helpful due to latest security
standards the link will not be useful. So try the below case.
solution 2 for case 3: If you have hosted your code somewhere on production server and if you have access to the production server, than take remote
desktop connection to the production server and try to login once from the browser of the production server. This will add exception for login to google and you will be allowed to login from code.
But what if you don't have access to the production server. try
the solution 3
solution 3 for case 3: You have to enable
login from other timezone / ip for your google account.
to do this follow the link https://g.co/allowaccess and
allow access by clicking the continue button.
And that's it. Here you go. Now you will be able to login from any of the computer and by any means of app to your google account.

FRM-92101- There is a failure in the form server during startup.
Hi,
I'm deploying a forms 10g application . I'm using Oracle Application Server Forms and Reports Services 10.1.2.0.2 under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, along with an Oracle 10g Database on another server. Every time I try testing the form services using http://10.0.4.114:7778/forms/frmservlet it brings out the errorFRM-92101- There is a failure in the form server during startup. This could happen due to invalid configuration. Please look into the web server log file for detail
Right now, I'm a bit lost. Can anyone please tell me if there is some parameter I have to set, or something I should do to make it work?
Thanks a lotFabian,
I did not make changes to those files. The forms services are working on another server with Red hat Rel 4 and 3 . What I did is to configure a new server with Red Hat Rel 5 , took the backup of all the forms binaries and the HOME and restore on the new server. I did the same thing for a server running rel 4 and it has no issue:
The content of the files are as below:
DEFAULT.ENV*
# $Id: default.env 26-apr-2005.16:59:08 sujain Exp $
# default.env - default Forms environment file, Solaris version
# This file is used to set the Forms runtime environment parameters.
# If a parameter is not defined here, the value used will be that defined
# in the environment in which the servlet engine (OC4J or JServ) was started.
# NOTES
# 1/ The Forms installation process should replace all occurrences of
# <percent>FORMS_ORACLE_HOME<percent> with the correct ORACLE_HOME
# setting, and all occurrences of <percent>O_JDK_HOME<percent> with
# the location of the JDK (usually $ORACLE_HOME/jdk).
# Please make these changes manually if not.
# 2/ Some of the variables below may need to be changed to suite your needs.
# Please refer to the Forms documentation for details.

# - In JDK 1.4.1 the location of libjvm.so is lib/sparc (there is no

# formsweb.cfg defines parameter values used by the FormsServlet (frmservlet)
# This section defines the Default settings. Any of them may be overridden in the
# following Named Configuration sections. If they are not overridden, then the
# values here will be used.
# The default settings comprise two types of parameters: System parameters,
# which cannot be overridden in the URL, and User Parameters, which can.
# Parameters which are not marked as System parameters are User parameters.
# SYSTEM PARAMETERS
# These have fixed names and give information required by the Forms
# Servlet in order to function. They cannot be specified in the URL query
# string. But they can be overridden in a named configuration (see below).
# Some parameters specify file names: if the full path is not given,
# they are assumed to be in the same directory as this file. If a path
# is given, then it should be a physical path, not a URL.
# USER PARAMETERS
# These match variables (e.g. %form%) in the baseHTML file. Their values
# may be overridden by specifying them in the URL query string
# (e.g. "http://myhost.mydomain.com/forms/frmservlet?form=myform&width=700")

FRM-92101: failure in the Forms Server during startup.
Hi
I am calling a Oracle report from a Oracle forms application. When I enter the parameters on the Parameter Form (Oracle Forms Application created for
entering the User Parameters) and click 'Run Report' button, I am getting the following error:
Kindly help me on this. Thanks in advance.
The complete error discription is given here...
FRM-92101: There was a failure in the Forms Server during startup. This could happen due to invalid configuration.
Details...
Java Exception:
oracle.forms.net.ConnectionException: Forms session <3> aborted: unable to communicate with runtime process.

- at oracle.forms.net.HTTPNStream.getResponse(Unknown Source)

- at oracle.forms.net.HTTPNStream.flush(Unknown Source)
- at java.io.DataOutputStream.flush(Unknown Source)
- at oracle.forms.net.StreamMessageWritter.run(Unknown Source)
Environment in which my Forms and Report Applications is running:
Operating System - Windows XP Professional
Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production With the Partitioning option
JServer Release 9.2.0.1.0 - Production
Forms [32 Bit] Version 10.1.2.0.2 (Production)
Report Builder 10.1.2.0.2
ORACLE Server Release 10.1.0.4.2
Please find the steps I followed before I run this application:
1. I started the OC4J Forms Server on my machine
2. I started the OracleAS Reports Services (Reports Server) on my machine.
3. Connected to the database and run the Forms Application.
I have tried the following options to solve this error:
- I have re-installed Oracle Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.1.0 again and retry calling my Reports application from Oracle Forms. Still the same error
persists.
I have written the following code inside 'WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED' Trigger to call my Oracle Report:
I found that the above error is coming at the following highlighted line below:
declare
BEGIN
--prepare the list of parameters to be sent to the report
--Add parameter(s) to list just created
--START THE REPORT
v_repid := FIND_REPORT_OBJECT('REPORT197');
vc_rep := RUN_REPORT_OBJECT(v_repid, Plist);
--GET REPORT STATUS
vc_rep_status := REPORT_OBJECT_STATUS(vc_rep);
-- Wait until report finishes or produces an error
-- Display the report if it is finished
END;Hi ,
I think that this kind of problem persists because of the variety of Forms , Database and maybe OS number-bit versions(32-bit and 64 respectively).
In the past , due to the inequality of number-bit of OS and the Oracle Products , I had many problems.... the import was finished abnormally as the connection to the database was stopped ...
