Web Gallery File Datestamp Unexpected?

O Learned Denizens,
I notice an "undocumented feature" that caused me some confusion. I scribe it here to save others the same confusion, maybe.
I use the Web module a lot to publish galleries. It rocks. I use
Matthew Campagna's web templates - they also rock. This behaviour is common to Jardine web gallery too, though - so I don't think it's Matthew's doing.
I have a desire to have a local copy of a site that I can test before uploading, so therefore I always "export" rather than "upload" from Lightroom.
I have a little shell script (MacOSX) that sniffs around the local copy of my site and, when asked, lobs any new stuff up onto the server. The basic plan is that I drop a new gallery into this area and then run the "upload" script.
When the gallery is written out, the datestamp on files that make up the mechanics of the gallery (pngfix.js etc) is the time of the files in the "master" gallery.
This means that my shell script doesn't upload the mechanics of the gallery by default (since the files are not "new") and means I need to recursively "touch" all the files in a gallery directory before uploading.
In unix-speak, I'd say the copy operation is being carried out with a "cp -p" operation by LR instead of a straightforward "cp". If someone could confirm whether or not the same thing happens on Windows that would be excellent.
It's not the end of the world but it did confuse me a bit, since the sites would work locally but not when I pushed them up to the server - obviously because they were incomplete, but that fact escaped me initially since they
i look
complete on first inspection, having all the relevant (but empty) subdirectories.
Since the "cp -p" thing is
i not
the default option, it seems that somebody somewhere has a reason for doing it this way. I'm just buggered if I can think what it is.
Damian

The Unix stuff is beyond me, but if you're using OS X, you might try using
FileBuddy to "touch" your files before uploading.
Also, I'm glad you think my galleries rock. Thank you! ;)

  • Web gallery file size...do I have this straight?

    I've read through the posts so far. I'm new to LR (waiting for my package to arrive, so still using the trial).
    I set up a collection of 57 photos.  Most were raw, the largest being 167,866 KB.  (kinda large)  I tried to upload from LR (thinking maybe it doesn't work in the trial version as I kept getting errors of one kind or another?) and found the total of the files was over 176,000,000 KB.  Hmmm.  So, I went back into PhotoShop CS3 (after another program that usually will batch convert files didn't work) and saved each with 800 ppi maximum on a side, and saved them all for the web. (That took a little time, but not too bad.) Then I had to import the new .jpg folder, and re-edit each photo to maximize their exposure and such.
    Must I do that every time I want to post a web gallery?  In other words, I'll have to keep the original (larger) files, and make a smaller set for web plublishing, and convert everything to a .jpg file as well?  (I suppose there's no sense in filling my server with photos that are much larger than necessary, but it seems like a lot of extra work.)
    Also notice, if I have to start again (it is taking a long time, but then it's my first attempt), the collection I've saved has all the Identity plates and information I've typed in going back to Lightroom defaults, and the order of the photos goes back to random (after I've meticulously tried to put them in order).  Hoping this is just because I'm using the trial again, but no way to know until the box comes in a few days (I hope).
    The feature that caused me to make this purchase is the ability to do these galleries.  I've been looking at templates, modifying them, and working on doing this, for quite some time now. When I saw it's just part of LR...WOW!  I did get excited!  What a useful and wanted feature!!!
    It's more than one question, I know, but I've so many more!  Will the learning every become adequate to do what I dream?  (This last question is rhetorical, by the way.)
    OMGoodness! I thought I saved the gallery in the Collections...clicked on it, and no pics, nothing I did (for the second time) seems to be anywhere.  I have a LONG way to go in learning to use this tool correctly!  Arghhhh!  ... Last revision...went back into the folder, and everything is there.  Wow!  Guess I don't need it in a Collection.  Awesome!

    These files were scanned. I'm sorry, I forgot that.  They're old pics.  Some were in .jpg format, but most were in .psd format.  I converted them to smaller files in the Save for Web Device in Photoshop.  My next gallery will be shots from my Nikon D200, and I checked...the files are about the same size as yours.  These scanned files were considerably bigger as the film was pretty old.  Did quite a few of them previously to last night, and used a dpi (or is it ppi) of higher than 300 I did the last ones in. File size varied from 1,201 KB to 16.765 KB. (That bigger one was a 5X8 school shot.)
    Will it normally send the files to the web full size and then just use the dimensions specified in the program?  I have to check how much space I have on the server, but I do have another gallery I want to make, and I found a great plugin (here on the forum) to add mp3 music to the gallery. (I know, more space, but love it!)  I figured 800 pixels on the longest side would be plenty adequate for viewing, and the gallery parameters are smaller, so that's fine.
    One thing I don't understand, it asked me to place the files in "photos," but I don't think it uploaded a folder of "photos" to the web.  However, it's obvious the files went.  I was afraid if I used the export, I was going to have to upload the folder with my photo files to the server, but I think it handled that.  I hope I get a user manual with my boxed product.  It can't come soon enough!  LOL
    By the way, I successfully posted the gallery tonight.  It's really great, and my son loved it.    I am SO thrilled with this program!!!

  • Changing default jpeg compression for Web Gallery files

    I have created several web galleries from both Raw and Jpeg files with Iphoto '08 that suffer from serious jpeg compression artifacts. I haven't found any way to change the compression amount to reduce the artifacts. Is there actually a way?

    papasteveo:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There is no way in iPhoto for the user to manage the jpg compression of the web gallery photos. If the option for visitors to download the photos is selected the copy that's uploaded is compressed approximately equivalent to an Photoshop quality setting of 8 or 9 out of 12. The pixel dimensions are the same as the original unless the max dimension in the original exceeds 3054. The the file is resized to 3054 max dimension.
    If the gallery is just for viewing the image is resized to 800 x 600 with additional compression.
    You could manually replace the file with one that you've prepared but it would be very tedious as each file has it's own folder and the file name is changed to web.jpg (viewing only) or large.jpg (download). You would have to rename each file to be uploaded to the new name and make sure it's placed in the correct folder.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Working web gallery file locations?

    LR3's ftp is timing out so I need to upload the gallery files with an ftp client. However, I can't find where it's putting the files to be uploaded. Where does it put them in windows 7?

    Try using the 'Export' option, instead of 'Upload'. This gives you the opportunity to specify exactly where you
    want to save your files.

  • Can an Adobe Bridge web gallery slideshow file be inserted in Dreamweaver as part of the homepage?

    Hello.  I am designing the homepage of my first website in Adobe Dreamweaver CS6.  And I would like for the page to include a slideshow that automatically plays as soon as a visitor opens the webpage.  I am interested in using Adobe Bridge to create the slideshow using the feature "web gallery."  The tutorials that I've seen describe how to create the web gallery slideshow, then show how it appears when uploaded to the web as an html file through FTP to a server.  It appears as a separate page.  And I notice that the web gallery file is an index file.  I would appreciate knowing how to include the html file as part of the homepage.  Will simply renaming the file from being "index.html" to something like "my_first_slideshow.html" make possible including it in the site structure?  Or will doing so cause it and the files attached to it to be inaccessable when viewed in a browser?  If it can be included in the site, is an <iframe> needed to be in the code for the slideshow to fit into?  Thank you.

    Maybe you best try this question in the dedicated Dreamweaver forum?:

  • MS Frontpage problem with LR web gallery

    When I try to manually add the web gallery files to the Frontpage application, they will not load up when uploaded.
    Any thoughts?
    Frank

    I deleted the html view code and copied the code I made from a text file and pasted it. Still the same problem. I didn't go line by line comparison. When I published again, still the same.
    On checking the activity, I see it won't load the first photo no matter what.
    I am making an Airtight AutoViewer and will see what that does when I publish.

  • Bridge CS5 Renames Files in HTML Web Gallery

    When creating an HTML Web Gallery (using ‘Lightroom’ template), Bridge CS5 renames the thumbs and large images to an arbitrary number.  The caption reads as the original file name, but the actual image has a new name.  This is problematic, as my clients will right-click selected images from my galleries to save and forward for approval, but the file name is not the same as the original.
    As an example: VLNK0321.jpg is renamed as _4856316150.jpg.  (In Preferences/Output, the "Convert multi-byte file names to Full ASCII" is unchecked.)
    Is there any way to fix this little (for me--BIG) problem?

    Solved!
    This works for Windows.  I imagine the Mac solution is similar. Props to William Zauscher for helping find an answer.
    I take no responsibliity for any damage caused to your computer, Photoshop or Bridge...
    In Windows, browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Bridge CS5 Extensions\Adobe  Output Module\mediagallery\resources\scripts
    In the file named "galleryCreator.jsxinc" replace the lines:
    AOM.AmgGalleryCreator.createUniqueFileName = function(filePath, jpgFile,  createMode)
        var alteredName;
        while (true)
             alteredName = "_";
            for (var i=0; i<10; i++)
                 alteredName += Math.floor(Math.random() * 10);
             alteredName += ".jpg";
            var f = new File(filePath +  alteredName);
            if (!f.exists)
                break;
         return alteredName;
    ...with the following:
    AOM.AmgGalleryCreator.createUniqueFileName = function(filePath, jpgFile, createMode)
                    var alteredName;
                    while (true)
                                    alteredName = "_";
                                    alteredName += jpgFile += ".jpg";
                                    var f = new File(filePath + alteredName);
                                    if (!f.exists)
                                                    break;
                    return alteredName;
    You can cut and paste the above.  Just save a version of the original file somewhere in case of screwups...
    Cheers!

  • Insert Photoshop Web Gallery swf file into Dreamweaver

    So i tried to take a shortcut, and created a flash photoshop
    web gallery and placed the "gallery.swf" file into my html file in
    Dreamweaver. However, it is showing a blank white screen (i'm
    guessing it can't find the images?) but when I view it on my hard
    drive, it is working fine, just not in dreamweaver or any browser,
    even after I upload to my server. Any help would be GREATLY
    appreciated!! I've also tried pasting the body html code from
    "index.htm" that photoshop creates, as well as move my image files
    to the root folder where the swf is, but that doesn't work either.
    I have my scripts in the same directory, and not in
    subfolders.

    Kizat727 posted in macromedia.dreamweaver:
    > and the link is
    >
    > www.micromediapubs2.com/dyers/portfolio.html
    That page is very different from the code you posted and I
    know nothing
    about Geoff Stearns' FlashObject code.
    For the above link, I see nothing in the source code that
    attempts to
    load a .swf file. However, it is linking to
    AC_RunActiveCon.js file in
    the wrong place:
    GET /dyers/assets/flash/pages/AC_RunActiveContent.js HTTP/1.1
    Referer:
    http://www.micromediapubs2.com/dyers/portfolio.html
    HTTP/1.x 404 Not Found
    The file is actually here:
    /dyers/Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js
    So if you actually do have a page in the dyers/ folder that
    links to a
    .swf file, just make sure the link to the .js file is
    correct.
    Most likely, change this:
    <script src="assets/flash/pages/AC_RunActiveContent.js"
    type="text/javascript"></script>
    to this:
    <script src="Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js"
    type="text/javascript"></script>

  • [web] is it possible to manipulate the file names of images from a web gallery?

    Hi,
    I am new here so please forgive my dumb questions....
    I would like the resulting images in my web gallery to have sequential filenames (ie 1.jpg, 2.jpg etc)
    Is this possible and could you give me some clues how I might approach this?
    Thanks!
    Steve

    You can't rename the actual files from Web as they export. There's nothing in the SDK on it either.
    Lightroom does change the naming to make it websage. For example, spaces are turned into underscores.
    If you need sequential files, I'd suggest getting the files in order, then exporting the files as highest quality Jpeg with a sequential naming system.
    Click the Add to Catalog checkbox, and perhaps use 'The same folder' and then use a subfolder for organistion.
    Use these new images to create the web gallery.

  • Using captions (or, hiding file names) for Web Gallery with Aperture 2.0

    Is there a way to add captions to pictures displayed using the Aperture 2.0 web gallery without changing the actual file name? I'd like to keep the file name but add a caption to each photo if possible.
    Thanks

    Hi John
    I'm not making extra versions for this, just using the version name as the name in the web gallery. If you are not already using the version name then it lends itself to web gallery naming nicely. If you are using version names already, perhaps reconsider how necessary this is to you as you are tying up this other potential use.
    My file names all contain a date and index number but I try and use more 'user friendly' version names if part of my final output will be for web galleries. This is good for clients as they don't have complicated names to order, but it's also a cinch to find the files using the search bar in Aperture.
    Hope this helps

  • File name font (web gallery output)

    I am using CS4 with adobe bridge.  I have created some web galleries and have selected the option to show the file name.  This shows up just below the picture in the gallery.  The problem is the font is too light to show up against my chosen background font.  I am wondering how to change the font color of this file name for the output web gallery.  If anyone knows how to do this, I would greatly appreciate it!!!  Thanks!

    Hi,
    You can change the font colour in the Output Panel, under Color Palette (the order it appears and the options it shows depends on the template you are using). Simply double click the colour swatch sqaure to open up the colour picker and choose a new colour.
    See attached screenshot if you are unsure where to look..

  • Keep CS5 HTML "lightroom" web gallery template from renaming files...

Can the script be altered to keep the original file name, not the ten-digit arbitrary number that it currently generates?
    Thanks for any help offered!

    I believe I've discovered the file/script that does the renaming.  I've done some testing, and have been able to change the way Bridge does the changes, but not able to keep the original file name.
    The file is "galleryCreator.jsxinc", found in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Bridge CS5 Extensions\Adobe Output Module\mediagallery\resources\scripts.
    I'm not a code-guy, so I'm hoping that someone with more smarts than I can help.  Below is the part of "galleryCreator.jsxinc" that does the re-naming.  Simply deleting this entire part of the script renders Bridge unusable.  So allowing the script to create the altername is important.  If the alteration could consist of only adding the "underscore" prefix to the original file name, all would be well...
    Here's the pertient portion of the script:
    AOM.AmgGalleryCreator.createUniqueFileName = function(filePath, jpgFile, createMode)
        var alteredName;
        while (true)
            alteredName = "_";
            for (var i=0; i<10; i++)
                alteredName += Math.floor(Math.random() * 10);
            alteredName += ".jpg";
            var f = new File(filePath + alteredName);
            if (!f.exists)
                break;
        return alteredName;
    I will send a check for $200 to the first person who can rewrite this to simply add the underscore first, then return the original file name instead of the random number generator, and make it work.  Anyone?

  • Enable File Save in LR Flash Web Gallery

    Nothing turned up with a search so I am wondering if anyone knows how to enable the ability to save a file with a right click when creating a web gallery with LR built in flash gallery?
    TTG Simple Viewer 1.8 has an option to enable/disable the save feature with a enableRightClickOpen="true" in the gallery.xml file but a search in the files LR Flash exports turned up nothing similar.
    Thanks for any help

    Yes thanks I have the SV plug in but it doesn't offer the flexibility that LR's Flash does for labels links etc. I thought that there'd be a way to edit the code to enable saving images.
