Web Services are protocols independent?

Hi Guys,
I want to know that Web Services are protocol independent? if yes, can i develop a web service in other protocols excepts HTTP and SOAP. Please describe in details.

Hello,
I will say it depends how you are qualifying Web Services and related technologies.
Historically, Web services have been build to use protocol and technologies that will work using Internet technologies and be compliant with Firewall and other internet layers...
So the network protocols were HTTP/HTTPS.Also, because the service has to be decoupled from the implementation, so we use XML and data representation using Schemas, all define in a wire protocol SOAP.
So initially Web Services are based on SOAP over HTTP/HTTPS, and the description of the services, the different message types is done in the WSDL, that is itself an XML document. Since the message is an XML document, it is possible to send it using any protocol, the idea being you send the SOAP request to a server the server deal with it and send a response all using SOAP representation. This is why for example in the Oracle Web Service stack in addition to HTTP/HTTPS, you can use JMS as the communication protocol.
But I also want to add some information about WSIF (Web Services Invocation Framework), where in addition to SOAP, you can use "native" layer to call a Web Service. The idea being that for example if you are building a service where the clients are either hosted on the same server as the service, or remote and outside the firewall... You want in this case to be able to call your java implementation class from the container when you are local, and when a customer wants to call the service from the internet uses the SOAP/HTTP protocol. To learn more about WSIF take a look to this OTN Article: Web Services—Anyhow, Anywhere
So as you can see Web Services are protocol intependent.

  • Startup class is run before web services are deployed

    Hello, I need to run a class at server start-up which uses web services deployed on the same Weblogic server.
    I'm using Weblogic startup class, which fires after the server is up and all modules have been deployed.
    However, it is fired before web services are deployed, so this solution doesn't work.
    Is there a way to have a class that is run by Weblogic after web services are deployed?
    Right now I'm using a timer that polls the server till the services are up and running, but I hope there's a cleaner way.
    thanx,
    Mike

    Thanx for response.
    Looking at the logs, the following came to light.
    1. My app does get deployed last, but the ServletContextListener in my app is fired after all modules "...transitioned from STATE_PREPARED to STATE_ADMIN".
    It took a few more seconds for all modules to transition "from STATE_ADMIN to STATE_ACTIVE".
    2. After all modules transitioned to STATE_ACTIVE, the log shows this:
    <Channel "DefaultSecure" is now listening on xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:443 for protocols iiops, t3s, ldaps, https.>
    I assume that only at this point are web services accessible. The error that I get when trying to invoke a web service from ServletContextListener is:
    java.net.ConnectException: Tried all: 1 addresses, but could not connect over HTTPS to server: RLOCVGVY91 port: 443
         at weblogic.net.http.HttpsClient.openServer(HttpsClient.java:289)
    So I dunno... If my ServletContextListener waits for 10 seconds, everything works.

    Hello,
    Could you be more specific about the version of OracleAS you are using?
    - which exact version ? (10.1.3.x, 10.1.2.x or 9.0/x)
    - which kind of Web Service are you developing? (J2EE 1.4/JAX-RPC or earlier version)
    Also if you find bug in the documentation or product please send let the Oracle Support Service knows.

  • Exchange Web Services are not currently available for this request because none of the Client Access Servers in the destination site could process the request.

    Hi,
    I am using EWS Java APIs and passing OAuth tokens to fetch data from office 365 mailboxes.
    Because I am developing Web APIs I preferred using "Application Permissions" defined in Azure active directory application for Office 365, and used "client credential flow" OAuth flow to fetch OAuth token specific to application which will
    allow "Have full access via EWS to all mailboxes in the organisation".
    After fetching token with the procedure specified in the document "http://blogs.msdn.com/b/exchangedev/archive/2015/01/21/building-demon-or-service-apps-with-office-365-mail-calendar-and-contacts-apis-oauth2-client-credential-flow.aspx"
    I passed this token to EWS Java APIs,
    it gave me error saying:
    microsoft.exchange.webservices.data.ServiceResponseException: Exchange Web Services are not currently available for this request because none of the Client Access Servers in the destination site could process the request.
    I tried similar thing with EWS managed APIs for .net. Got similar error.
    Can anyone provide some help and direction to resolve this error.
    Thanks & Best Regards,
    Pranjal

    I see you found an answer with the X-AnchorMailbox header on StackOverflow:

    I have spent too much time trying to trace or troubleshoot this issue, but all I got was to check the registry and check permissions on the temp folder and other folders, I have done complete removal with the database for the old WSUS and reinstalled it

    So, in reality, this issue has nothing at all to do with "it was working; now it is not", because you've destroyed all of the evidence that would exist in a "was working; now is not" scenario. What we really have here is a NEW installation that has failed.
    So, from the perspective of a NEW installation that is not working...
    Are there any other roles, features, services, or applications installed on this server?
    Did you install the Web Server Role exactly as described in the documentation?
    Did you install the WSUS Role exactly as described in the documentation?
    Were there any other roles, features, services, or applications installed onto this server
    after your original (working) installation of WSUS?

    Oh, well, I have red and followed the documentation exactly step-by-step on the technet library, and I can guarantee you nothing went wrong because this is not my first installation for it
    When I told you about the old damaged installation and the new installation which is also failed and showed me the same symptoms as the old one, I was sure that nothing wrong with the WSUS itself, but rather it is something wrong with the environment
    Answering to your above questions, the answer for all is that: that server is only used for WSUS, nothing more
    Anyway, I have managed to restore the service thanks to your previous reply where you point to the CONFIG folder inside the NET framework folder, I checked the files in there, some were changed to the date I think has stopped the service, so I repaired the
    NET framework 2, and restarted
    It is working fine now and syncing with the update server

  • Why Web services are used to send data not HTTP in Web dynpro for Java?

    Is Web Dynpro for Java supports Web service , RFC as communication to other systems why http cannot be used in Wweb dynpro for java.........
    Thanks and Regards,
    CSP

    Hi Pradeep,
    Yes, Web Dynpro java supports web service, you can expose your web service as RFC Model to
    communicate with others system. As per as HTTP is concern we don't have any
    supportive method in web Dynpro. Insted of HTTP we use context in web dynpro to communicate.

  • Query as Web Services!!! What are its uses and why do we need it?

    What are its uses and why do we need it.. if other tools like Dashboard and crystal reports and Webi can connect to universe and create reports and Analytics...

    Hello  Rajsan Madhavarajan
    Query as a Web Service (QaaWS) is a SAP Business Objects (BOBJ)  client-side tool that allows users to create and publish Web Services that can be made available over the Web.  Once these web services are created and published,  they can be consumed like any other standard Web Service in software applications including Xcelsius and Crystal Reports.   But first we have to understand what exactly is a Web Service.
    Web Service
    A Web Service is a software system that supports  interoperable interaction over a network from one computer or machine to another but is more commonly defined as a client and a server communicating data over the Web using the HTTP Protocol. Using Web Services along with Business Objects allows a live connection of data to be used in applications such as Xcelsius and Crystal Reports through a semantic layer called a Universe.
    Query as a Web Service (QaaWS)
    The two main components in QaaWS are the Client Tool and the Server.  The QaaWS Client Tool gives the end user an easy to use wizard that allows them to create Universe queries and publish them as Web Services.  Once the QaaWS is published, any user can securely access the data that the Web Service contains as long as they have access to that server. Have a look on  image below that shows the information flow to and from the server via the client.
    Advantages to QaaWS:
    Very easy to use and intuitive interface Familiar look and feel for people who have used Web Intelligence
    Leverages existing Business Objects Universes Shares metadata with Web Intelligence, Desktop Intelligence and Crystal Reports
    Maintains Business Objects Enterprise Security
    Allows live data feeds to be incorporated into Xcelsius Dashboards and Crystal Reports

  • JAX-RPC: Web service where both server /and/ client are services?

    I'm considering a two-way Web service in an application that I'm designing and would appreciate any insight from prior experience.
    This will be a standard client-server application, where the server broadcasts messages and the client, in turn, can request further information about the messages that it receives (think RSS-style updates, but with more interaction). [strong]However[strong], instead of having the client poll the server for new messages, I'd like to have the client register itself with the server as a message listener. The server is currently implemented as a Web service on port X. I'd like the client to register itself with the server, and then receive messages on port Y.
    I'm considering a design like the following (note the directions of the inheritance arrows):
    ( Server class )  --<-- ( RemoteServerImpl class ) -->-- / RemoteServer interface /
           |
    ( Listener class ) --<-- ( RemoteListenerImpl class ) -->-- / RemoteListener interface /Some considerations:
    * In both cases, the client and server are broken out into an interface and two classes. The non-Remote classes implement all of the functionality. The RemoteX interfaces declare the methods that will be exposed via RPC, and the RemoteXImpl classes are empty subclasses of the non-Remote classes.
    * In order to register itself with the Server, the Listener must be passed in as a method parameter, and thus conform to the JAX-RPC specification for value types. However, value types can't implement java.rmi.Remote.
    * Only the Server and Listener know anything about each other.
    * This application can be run either remotely or locally, depending on how the Server and Listener are instantiated. For the latter, they're instantiated directly and the listener is registered with the Server. For the latter, the RemoteX interfaces will point to the service stubs.
    * I don't see an easy way to allow both the Server and the Listener to have references to each other (at least now without some casting magic), since one of them will have to conform to the value type specification, which requires that all of its fields must be valid JAX-RPC types.
    I've got the Server portions implemented and working, and am now going to turn to the Listener stuff. Can anybody see a fundamental problem with this design, or can suggest something better?

    Hi There,
    Because web services are fundamentally a Services-oriented architecture, and not an Object-oriented one, you are unable to pass objects by reference (only by value) hence the design decision to not allow rmi.Remote objects to be sent across the wire. The best way would be to abstract an object which does itself not represent a server, but a route to a server (lets call it ServerPointer). This must contain address, port, service info, etc.
    Now, in your Server class, create a factory method which takes a ServerPointer, and returns a reference to a
    remote server, e.g. protected Server createServer( ServerPointer p ) (using the necessary APIs to get such a reference)
    Hope this helps...

  • ABAP web services

    HIII..
    I want  to know about  a ABAP web service . How this can be created????
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Mayank Saxena

    Hi,
    Web Services
    Business processes consist of individual process steps that can vary in how extensive they are. One or more functions are then assigned to these steps; an executing software component is then assigned to each function. Clearly, the heterogeneous nature of system landscapes in enterprises makes it impossible to implement all the necessary functions associated with a complete process using the same technology on the same component. A modern software infrastructure must be in the position to integrate functions, implemented on widely differing software components, in one effective complete process. Until now, the combination of different applications has largely been based on manually declared interfaces, message formats, and agreements between business partners.
    Web services simplify this process. They are based on open, generally accepted standards. They enable you to combine functions in a single process, even if they are implemented in widely differing software components. Web services are standalone, executable entities that can be published, searched for, and called, across a network.
    Introduction
    The SAP Web Application Server implements the following basic Web services standards: eXtensible Markup Language (XML); Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP); Web Service Definition Language (WSDL); and Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI).
    In the documentation that follows, we assume that the reader is familiar with Web service standards and techniques. You will find a general introduction to the Web Services topic under Sun Microsystems, in the pages of W3C, and in the general explanations for standardization organization OASIS under the topic UDDI.
    Integration
    ABAP and Java Web Services
    Enterprises can extend their solutions by using Java or ABAP Web services, or both. If your priority in programming an application is the selection of data, the integration of an ABAP Web Service could be appropriate. Conversely, if you are implementing processes that involve different business partners and systems, it may be beneficial to program in Java and integrate Java Web Services.
    The Web Service Framework consists of:
    ·        The development environment for the ABAP Engine
    ·        The development environment for the J2EE Engine
    ·        Tools that support UDDI registration
    ·        A distributed, interoperable SOAP runtime (ABAP and J2EE Engine)
    Processing of SOAP requests using the Internet Communication Framework
    Web Services and the SAP Exchange Infrastructure
    The SAP Exchange Infrastructure is a key area in SAP NetWeaver. The Exchange Infrastructure provides an open, process-oriented integration infrastructure for the unhindered flow of information and for XML-based message exchanges. Systems integrated using SAP XI exchange messages over the Integration Server.
    The programming model for XI ABAP proxies and Web services has been unified. The advantage of this is that both technologies can be implemented so that they complement one another. Messages can be sent and received either using the XI runtime or the Web service runtime.
    Additional proxy runtime services can be controlled using protocols that you request using a proxy method. The features you have available depend on whether you are using the Web Service Framework or the Exchange Infrastructure for communication.
    Features
    The ABAP Workbench offers an environment where you can publish, search for, and call Web services. It enables the SAP Web Application Server to act both as a server and client for Web services.
    The Web service infrastructure enables developers to:
    ·    Publish independent function that were implemented as RFC-enabled function modules, function groups, BAPIs, or XI message interfaces. This includes functions available as part of mySAP.com solutions, or functions developed by customers or partners. The Web service can be used across the entire Internet using standard protocols and can easily be added to any development environment. (See also Creating a Web Service).
    ·    Consume Web services, regardless of where they are stored or how they are implemented. Business processes can be implemented across several systems, either within an enterprise or across several enterprises. (See also Consuming Web Services.)
    The following triangle shows the basic architecture of the Web Service Framework:
    Service Provider
    After the functions have been implemented, a Web service interface must be created that provides a representation of the Web service for the user. This interface offers an abstraction layer and thus independence from the specific implementation used. Based on this interface, the Web service is configured and can be called at runtime. Publishing Web services in a UDDI Registry is supported by the UDDI client functions in the SAP Web AS.
    Service Directory
    You can store Web service definitions and released Web Services in a UDDI Registry. WSDL documents provide the basis of the Web service client, which can then be searched for in the UDDI using either a browser or the standard UDDI APIs. Web services can be published and searched for in all registries that conform to the standard. SAP also offers a public UDDI Business Registry under uddi.sap.com.
    Service Requestor
    The SAP Web AS allows you to integrate Web services. It can generate Web service clients from WSDL files.
    Standardization and Extensibility
    Web services and Web service standards develop quickly; new standards are being presented continually at standardization committees. However, these extended standards – such as security standards or additional protocols – can easily be integrated in the Web Service Framework using SAP.

  • Protocol Independent Servlets

    Hello All,
    It is a known fact that the Servlet API is protocol independent and Additional classes like HttpServlet provide facility to use HTTP protocol for communication.
    I was just wondering, how to use the protocol independent feature of the Servlet API and use it for my own protocol. Is there any other pratical and simple example where Servlets are used with other protocols other than HTTP. I am really interested to have a look at it.
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    Giridhar Manepalli

    Disregard my earler email :-) I somehow managed to
    forget few words!
    Thanks Steve!
    Even before implementing classes which extend
    ServletRequestWrapper etc, we need to have certain
    protocol specific methods implemented by the web
    container.No. The container only cares abuot the general request-response theme. There is the one exception of the HTTP protol. Since the HTTP protocol is the most often used, interfaces for that protocol are defined as part of the J2EE spec (HttpServlet, HttpServletRequest, HttpServletResponse, HttpSession) and implementations provided by the container to fullfill the spec (HttpServlet is a class, no implementation needed. Tomcat uses CoyoteRequest and CoyoteResponse to implement the HttpServletReuest and HttpServletResponse interfaces).
    You would be responsible for any protocol except HTTP. But the idea is to follow the same format.
    1) Extend GenericServlet to ProtocolServlet.
    2) Extend ServletRequest and ServletResponse to ProtocolServletRequest and ProtocolServletResponse
    3) Create implementations of the ProtocolServletRequest and ProtocolServletResponse.
    -- Best bet is to extend ServletRequestWrapper and ServletResponseWrapper for these classes, since they will need to wrap around the original ServletRequest/ServletResponse.
    -- You can follow the basic model provided by the HTTP implementation and never show the name of the implementing classes, just the interfaces ProtocolServletRequest and ProtocolServletResponse
    4) Use the ProtocolServlet to read the ServletRequest's input stream and
    -- Generate a ProtocolServletRequest and ProtocolServletResponse out of the ServletRequest and ServletResponse provided (along with pertinent information from the request's input stream).
    -- Determine the best course of action based on the contents of the input stream
    -- Dispatch the ProtocolServletRequest and ProtocolServletResponse to an appropriate method.
    I was going through the code of tomcat, I came to
    know that CoyoteRequest class which implements
    HttpServletRequest, HttpServletResponse interfaces,
    is actually the one that is passed to the service
    method of the servlet as ServletRequest object.
    Now, CoyoteRequest as part of the container contract
    implemented HTTP Protocol specific code like "Method
    of HTTP Request viz., GET, POST etc" and some more
    protocol specific methods.
    I think, when J2EE specification says Servlets are
    protocol independent, it means that the containers
    can implement whatever protocols they want, thereby
    the application components deployed in the container
    can use that protocol services.It means that the Serlvet container CAN handle any protocol (in theory). The J2EE specs. require a non-specific servlet handling mechanism (GenericServlet, ServletRequest, and ServletResponse). It also requires the container to handle the HTTP protocol because that is the most likely to be used (and is required for JSP. So HttpServlet, HttpServletRequest, and HttpServletResponse, HttpSession).
    Servlets can still handle other protocols, but the container will not do it automatically. You will be forced to implement the details which sit on a layer above the generic handling.
    You may want to look around the web and see if there is a servlet implementation of the protocol you want to handle. I would be surprised if there is not an FTPServlet suite hanging around. Other protocols are less likely.
    If you do have to implement it yourself, make sure you read the specs on the protocl thoroughly. Your implementation will need to flawlessly parse incoming requests and send out responses in a well formed protocol-dependent manner.

    Any thoughts?

  • EAI AND WEB SERVICES

    Hi,
    What is the difference between web services and EAI ?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    Salient Differences between Traditional EAI Solutions and Web Services
    A few essential differences between traditional EAI solutions and Web Services are, as follows:
    Simple: There is no doubt that Web Services are much simpler to design, develop, maintain, and use as compared to a typical EAI solution which may involve distributed technology such as DCOM and CORBA. Once the framework of developing and using Web Services is ready, it will be relatively easy to automate new business processes spanning across multiple applications.
    Open Standards: Unlike proprietary EAI solutions, Web Services are based on open standards such as UDDI, SOAP, HTTP and this is probably the single most important factor that would lead to the wide adoption of Web Services. The fact that they are built on existing and ubiquitous protocols eliminates the need for companies to invest in supporting new network protocols.
    Flexible: Since EAI solutions may require point-to-point integration, changes made at one end have to be propagated to the other end, making them very rigid and time consuming in nature. Web Services based integration is quite flexible, as it is built on loose coupling between the application publishing the services and the application using those services.
    Cheap: EAI solutions, such as message brokers, are very expensive to implement. Web Services, in the future, may accomplish many of the same goals - cheaper and faster.
    Scope: EAI solutions, such as message brokers, integrate applications treating them as single entities, whereas Web Services allow companies to break down big applications into small independent logical units and build wrappers around them. For example, a company can write wrappers for different business components of an ERP application such as order management - purchase order acceptance, status of order, order confirmation, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
    Efficient: As mentioned in the previous point, Web Services allow applications to be broken down into smaller logical components, which makes the integration of applications easier as it is done on a granular basis. This makes Web Services solutions for EAI much more efficient than traditional EAI solutions.
    Dynamic: Web Services provide a dynamic approach to integration by offering dynamic interfaces, whereas traditional EAI solutions are pretty much static in nature.

  • Expose Object Oriented Service code as Web Services?

    Hello All,
    I would appreciate for your insight on this matter!
    Web Services are basically RPC (Procedure Oriented) over Soap. Each service invocation by a client results a procedure execution on the server side (In many case, a service class may need to be instantiated before the procedure can be called).
    Suppose I have developed server-side logics in Object Oriented manners. How can I expose the OO server logics as Web Services? Does JDeveloper handle OO services any different from PO (procedure-oriented) services as far as the generated wrapper code/interface and WSDL?
    Specifically, I have the following example in mind. Assume we are able to successfully expose an OO services. A client calls one of the OO service (let's say service1 in portType1) the 1st time, and establish some transit state (not committing into DB), the same client subsequently calls another service (service2) of the same server portType1. How would the server retrieve the transit state established earlier by service1 while executing service2? (note, this situation would not be resulted in a procedure-oriented case. since each RPC call is independent from the others)
    I realize that "stateful" deployment may be of an option. However, stateful seems relying on client cooperation (e.g., via cookies) to establish context across multiple invocations. This may or may not be possible given an arbitrary client parties write its client code based on a WSDL.
    Another option I can think about is for Jdeveloper to generated different code for PO services vs. OO services. However, it seems not the case in current Jdeveloper.
    Thank you so much!

    Web services in general have two styles of invocation: RPC style and Doc style. RPC maps as you say directly to methods on Java class (or if a DB PL/SQL package to procedures and functions).
    The alternative, DOC, generally (though not all the time) maps to a message oriented interface. Often DOC style Web services map to messaging infrastructure such as Java Message Service Queues and Topics.
    That said RPC works well with EJB's, the component model for J2EE.
    Often what folks will do is build a service layer that is very coarse grained when exposing backend infrastructure as Web services. This abstraction typically hides a more OO underpinning (or quite often hides a very procedural backend too).
    The bottom line is the Web services do not force an OO paradigm but nor do they hinder you in any way from adopting an OO paradigm.
    In terms of JDeveloper currently it supports RPC and supports DOC only with some tweaking. On the server side, the Oracle9iAS infrastructure supports both DOC and RPC.
    Hope this is a start to answering what I think is a hard question to answer!
    Mike.

  • Leading ? xml version="1.0"? tag when creating / invoking web services

    Hello friends. I'm wondering if anyone has any insight as to why I cannot create
    a fully formed XML document when developing a web service which includes the standard
    <? xml version="1.0" ?> leading tag.
    If I include the leading tag in my XML mapping for a jws method, I am unable to
    compile the service into an ear, getting the following error: "An unexpected
    exception occurred while attempting to process the classes and annotations for
    this Web Service." If I do not include the leading tag, I can compile into an
    EAR file and invoke the web service from a HTTP POST, but I cannot include the
    leading <?xml...> tag in my request. Considering that I'll be asking other vendors
    to submit to my web services and creation of xml documents using DOM or other
    methods automatically generates the <?xml ...>, I'm hoping I'm not going to have
    to tell them to parse out this piece of the files they want to send me. Can anyone
    help?
    Thanks so much!

    CM,
    I suppose you have set 'http-xml=true' for this to work. For http-xml
    protocol, there is no way to specify the leading <?xml> tag, and hence
    unfortunately the desired functionality cannot be achieved.
    In case, this is very important for you, could you please log a support
    case, and then we can file a bug and ask the Engineering to look into it.
    Thanks,

    Hi Anurag -
    Thanks for the response. My problem is that I would like to be able tosubmit
    straight XML (i.e., not SOAP) to a webservice from an application outsideof Weblogic.
    For example, the following code block fails on submission to BEA:
    * Example Simple Integration.
    import java.io.*;
    import java.net.*;
    public class testBEAPost {
    * Null constructor.
    public testBEAPost () {
    super();
    * This method handles creation of a PeopleSoft XML Envelope, wrapping of
    * user input into the envelope, submission of the message to theintegration
    broker
    * and display of the response message to the screen.
    * @created 3.12.2003
    * @param argv java.lang.String[] Standard user entry input
    public static void main(String[] argv) {
    try{
    URL url;
    URLConnection urlConn;
    DataOutputStream printout;
    DataInputStream input;
    // Create the internal XML document which will be to send to BEA.(hardcoded)
    >
    String internalXMLDoc = "<? xml version=\"1.0\"?><newlocationxmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\"><setid>WMS</setid><l
    ocationid>1118UG0000</locationid><description>Electric
    UndergroundLocation</description><exceptionemailaddress>[email protected]<
    /exceptionemailaddress></newlocation>";
    >
    // Define the target URL.
    url = newURL("http://167.75.117.20:7001/WebServices/PeopleSoftWebServices/NewLocation
    Service.jws/createLocation");
    >
    // Open the Conection
    urlConn = url.openConnection();
    // Set necessary connection variables.
    urlConn.setDoInput (true);
    urlConn.setDoOutput (true);
    urlConn.setUseCaches (false);
    // Specify the content type.
    urlConn.setRequestProperty("Content-Type", "text/xml");
    // Send POST output.
    printout = new DataOutputStream (urlConn.getOutputStream ());
    printout.writeBytes (internalXMLDoc);
    printout.flush ();
    printout.close ();
    // Get response data.
    input = new DataInputStream (urlConn.getInputStream ());
    String str;
    while (null != ((str = input.readLine())))
    System.out.println (str);
    input.close ();
    } catch (Exception e)
    System.out.println(e);
    If I run this program, I get a java.io.IOException with the serverreturning a
    500 error code. However, if I strip out the leading <? xml version="1.0"?> tag
    and submit to the web service, it works fine. My program set I createdthis example
    for uses DOM to create the document, so I'm actually creating thedocument, getting
    the String value of it, then parsing out the leading tag beforesubmission. My
    problem is that soon I'll be dealing with third parties who may havetrouble generating
    SOAP requests (don't ask), so I'd like to be able to tell them to generatesimple
    XML documents to send to BEA if at all possible.
    Can you assist? Thanks so much.

    CM,
    A SOAP message generated by a Workshop web service, when it acts as a
    client
    to another service, always contains the leading <?xml> tag. Here is a
    sample
    of a SOAP message generated by Workshop:
    POST /TestImport/TestAny/TestAny.jws HTTP/1.0
    User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; MS Web Services Client
    Protocol 1.0.3705.0; BEA WLW 7.0)
    SOAPAction: "http://www.openuri.org/hello2"

    Connection: Keep-Alive

    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"

    <hello2 xmlns="http://www.openuri.org/">
    <o></o>
    </hello2>
    </SOAP-ENV:Body>
    </SOAP-ENV:Envelope>
    It seems to me that what you are asking for is already there. Could you
    please elaborate your issue further, probably with a sample of a XML
    message
    which you feel is not accepted by Workshop, but should be.
    Thanks,

  • Transactional Web Services?

    Is there any way to ensure that web services are transactional?
    We have a rich client passing soap calls through to an OC4J container. We are certain that session beans are transctional, since if an error occurs in the database, the entire transction is rolled back.
    However, if we pass the soap call through, and somehow a network connection is lost before the client receives the response from the server, we think because the transaction may be updating to the server, and since the client doesn't receive notification, it ends up thinking the transaction failed, and tries to send it again later. (thus failing later with a duplicate key) We're still trying to research this but so far this is what we suspect is happening.
    So my question is, are OC4J web services transactional? Or is a limitation due to the stateless nature of http?

    Jason,
    Currently oc4j web services are not transactional in a sense, that they don't provide any transaction context propagation mechanism between the client and the server, etc. There are different evolving standards in the web service space regarding support for distributed 2pc and long-running transactions, such as WS-Coordination/Transaction. As the standards/protocols mature, oc4j will provide corresponding support for them.
    Cheers,
    -lars
