Webdav still busted

since the old topic auto-archived and isn't open any more... just posting this to see if anyone's heard an inkling of whether or not Apple ever intends to fix webdav or not.

The problem is twofold - a bug in Apache's mod_proxy, and the fact that the Finder's webdav client sends the relevant header as "Transfer-Encoding: Chunked" (note the capital "C" - it's this capitalization which tickles the bug in mod_proxy). This has been fixed in later versions of Apache (see https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=47383), but who knows when - or if - it will be fixed in OSX (since technically, the value of "Chunked" is perfectly legal and correct).
Note that if you have access to the Apache's configuration (or configuration for the DAV share), you can work around this bug if mod_header is enabled (example for apache 2.2):

SMB printing still busted

I've seen many threads where there are some fixes, such as for hijack. However, I still haven't seen anything that repairs the SMB print function. Do I really need to perform a re-install from the CD and manually update the machine without the sec. update to print again? Right now I have to VM to Windows and print from there.

Yeah I have tried all of the posted suggestions in that thread as well as many others. Nothing works. I have left feedback for Apple and hopefully along with all the other posted feedback, they'll actually fix the problem. In the meantime, if anyone has a cure or fix that I have not mentioned, please feel free to post.

Finder WebDAV still unreliable to the point of impossible: MobileMe misery

The biggest let down in 10.6, including 10.6.2, from my perspective is WebDAV in the Finder. It is incredibly BUGGY. This was not the case previously, despite a very long history of WebDAV flakiness in general.
Typical experience: I am on my MobileMe iDisk. I am trying to examine the files and folders inside my Public folder. I attempt to open a folder to see what I have there. What do I find?
1) The Finder starts going into Sit & Spin mode on a regular basis while I am working in my iDisk.
2) Eventually the Finder will FLAKE OUT and no longer see what is on my iDisk. It starts telling me that folders full of files have '0 items'. The result is that I can no longer, after that point, navigate properly in my iDisk. It's impossible.
The solution? I have to EJECT my iDisk and start all over again! I N F U R I A T I N G and entirely unacceptable.
I thought the WebDAV bug reportedly fixed in 10.6.2 was the one. But it was NOT.
I'm reporting this nasty bug here in the discussions so other people recognize they are not alone. But I am calling Apple directly to day to get them to finally solve this mess. Here they are selling the MobileMe service with yearly contracts, I'm up for renewal, and I can't use my iDisk reliably?! Bad show Apple.

Lots of users are seeing this, in various configurations.
Be aware that laptops are typically resource constrained - processing video as an example can tax the hardware and software. If you have large demands you might want to consider upgrading the physical RAM to max, along with a HD that has a faster spindle speed and larger buffer - you might even consider moving to a desktop system.
By all means be sure any 3rd party apps AND plug-ins are Snow Leopard compatible.
If issues continue, you may consider walking that portable in to the nearest Apple store and asking for opinions from the staff.

Clip notes still busted

Hi,
I love the Clip Notes feature! It stands out among NLE's. However, it no longer appears to work when exporting from CS3 and opened in Reader 9. There have been a handful of posts about this in the last year, without any resolution. I am wondering if there can be any kind of definitive answer if this will ever get fixed in CS3. It appears to be a non-issue in CS4, but we should not have to upgrade to get this fix. And it's ridiculous to say we should ask our clients to revert to Reader 8 after they have Reader 9 installed. The whole point of Clip Notes is to make things simpler.
This is a very basic and important fix request.

It is unlikely (read: impossible) that any more updates to CS3 will be
posted. Development of updates for CS4 is in full swing, and I suspect
that CS5 is also in work.
Reversion to Reader 8 is the only solution available. It is not a good
solution, since the gaping security holes in 8 were closed in 9, and
then closed again in 9 with a patch. Closing those security holes
disabled a lot of functionality in certain .pdf files, even among
Adobe's own apps.

WebDAV Dramas

Hi folks...
I'm having issues connecting to my Page Group using WebDAV?
It used to work without issue, and I believe the problem may relate to me changing the Page Group name in question, as WebDAV still has the folder with its previous name...
I have reviewed metalink doco and it seems to confirm my problem is caused by this, but I can't seem to find the solution to get around this problem.
If anyone has experienced this issue and knows how to overcome it, your help would be greatly appreciated!

This problem is fixed with the 9.0.2.3 patch. However, I recommend that you upgrade to 9.0.2.6 (or the soon to be released 10g (9.0.4)) to take advantage of other enhancements we have made to the WebDAV feature.

I had ERROR 405 when i try to access repository via Webdav...
when
i use URL : http://<host_machine>:<port>/<portalEARName>Webdav
i have login screen
i authenticate witth weblogic/weblogic
and after i have an error 405.
My log give this message :

a folder or file at the root is not allowed.>
Documentation seems to say that "BEA repositories are WebDAV-enabled by default"
I don't understand what happen...

The error generally happens when you are trying to create a folder at the same level as a repository.
However, I have noticed that there are many cases where the message is logged on the console, but webdav still lets the operation to succeed.
So, I'm not sure what's going on in your case. 405 generally indicates a resource access not allowed kind of an error, which means that the client was trying to access a directory which did not exist, or something similar.

Premiere 5.02 External Monitor??

Reading through the bug fixes on version 5.02 I see this line in the Read me. "Unable to export timeline image via IEEE1394 when Mercury GPU acceleration is used". as one of the fixes.
I took this to mean that they have resolved the playing back to an external montitor issue, but still doesnt work on my system? Any one else got it to work? If that is what it means.

I Killed Quick time (going to reinstall OSX and need ac3codec for mac)

Hi,
I killed my quick time. I have a video file I want to play (a project I'm working on with others.) anyway, it has 5.1 audio. The video plays, but no audio. I put the file on the XP and still no audio. I played it on Divx player. It says I'm missing Tag 8192.
So after a quick Google, i get ac3codec for the XP, install... and i get the audio on the XP with the video.
Off to find the codec for the mac...I found a file, i forget where i got it, placed it in the /libary/qucktime. and none of my .avi files will play any more, just a white screen. my .mov files seem to work fine. I remove the codec, and QT is still busted.
In reading the fourms here, it seems Quicktime is part of OSX, so there is no real, uninstall...reinstall thing, is that correct? Unless there is another suggestion, I plan on reinstalling OSX tonight. This should restore QT.
Also, is there a ac3codec type thing for the mac?

Ok, i'm getting really bent. I don't get how these played before and now they don't. I'm still not getting it to work.

I end up with a file called: XVIDDelegate and i put in in the root of the HD\Libary\QuickTime.
Still does not play.

So i go to dvix.com, and it seems i have to pay $20. I'm really confused, maybe its just frustration blinding me. Most of my avi files played, now they don't.

[SOLVED] update removed menu items in lxpanel menu & in gnome-panel

when i start gnome-panel, the 'applications' drop down is empty, and 'system' no longer contains the 'administration' and 'preferences' items.
in lxpanel, the menu only shows 'run' and 'logout'.
i wanted to see if alacarte still showed things, so i ran alacarte from a terminal (which normally works)...

naturally, starting alacarte by right clicking on gnome-menu -> edit menus also does nothing.
i looked at /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py with cat, and there is nothing super-obviously wrong with the script.

so i saw this error message....

the file was empty. and what do we do with broken config files in ~? why, we hide them, of course!

now gnome-panel works, but alacarte (menu editor) and lxpanel's menu is still busted.
now that i am getting somewhere, im gonna keep posting as i trace this down so others that may come across this same issue can benefit.
edit: renamed ~/.config/menus/lxde-applications.menu to .menubackup and restarted lxpanel, it works now.

alacarte is giving me this...
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/chris/.config/menus/applications.menu'
and sure enough, pcmanfm told me that the file belonged to root.
sudo pcmanfm, navigated to that file, right click -> properties -> permissions -> changed owner to chris and group to users.
alacarte works now, too.
i think im going to go through and recursively make everything in each ~ folder belong to the username it should just in case permissions got jumbled somewhere/anywhere else.
just so i know: did this happen to anyone else that updated within the last 24 hours or so?
(so i can learn if it was something *I* did, or if it was something that came with the *update*)

Acro 8.1.2 & PDF print files

I've an InDesign business card file that I'm trying to print to PDF 8.0. When I print the file, it goes through the contortions, launches the printer application, etc. But where is it putting the PDF file?
I've also been trying to use the Acro 8 OCR function; it gyrates through the page images in the PDF document, but I can't find where the devil Acro is putting the resulting OCR'd document file.
Is Acro still busted? I have the latest version (8.1.2) running on Leopard 10.5.2 on G5
I'm posting this on the InDesign forum too.

Remove the printer under OSX / Preferences and then Repair the
installation from Acrobat ..

Powerpoint crashes

Hi all please HELP!!!
Everytime I try to play a slideshow or add animation, powerpoint shuts down. I have tried reinstalling and I went to the Genius bar and they cleaned my hardrive up and still busted! I also get a message that fonts are missing???

May be I didn't mention. It crashes every time. Even just with text. Nothing else.
But I strongly suspect I am facing this after I enabled the settings given by microsoft support on how to play media files in power point. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291879)
Now even if I reset these setting it still crashes. And I am using powerpoint 2003
Is there a solution other than re installing.?

I am using wc11gPS4 with ecm11g on win7 64bit, I configured wc with ecm, I used default content page in my groupspace, uploaded a word file, right click it, on the popup menu, select edit with word, I was prompted to enter username and passwd, I inputed the correct info, but never passed verification, is there any suggestion on this?
word version is office 2007.
This test is based on the changing of default registry table:
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters
I changed the value for "BasicAuthLevel" to "2" (decimal),hope this was not the reason, I did this for making webdav worked(webdav still doesn't work)

USB External Drive Solutions

USB solutions for MacBook Air:
USB port powered SSD or thumb drives with minimal power requirements seem a good fit.
A USB external hard drive with extraordinarily low power requirements would be another option; possibly one of the green drives might get away with using just USB bus power? Most hard drives do require AC power to safely work with a USB connection. It would be great to determine which if any external hard drives can operate using the minimal current provided through the USB port but I suspect that specific goal will be limited to external flash drives.
Would love to have an external SSD drive with substantial capacity which operates solely on USB power. One nice feature on a cost basis is that it would not need to be especially fast since the bus itself is so limited, so it seems reasonable that there is a scramble going on as I type by vendors seeking to fill this price sensitive niche for all the new Air owners. A relatively slow form of SSD drive would suffice, even something along the lines of a large capacity ordinary thumb drive might be good since the USB bus itself is so limited in speed.
My goal would be something fast enough to saturate all the speed the USB 2 port is capable of, which renders most of the slower ordinary USB thumb drives "not good enough".
Some of the latest USB 3 capable thumb drives might be just the ticket; maybe even several small ones. I can see having one on each side of the Air (balanced with care!). A small flexible dongle would be good in this regard because it could cause serious damage to have a thumb drive's leverage cranking on the USB port of such a thin light device.
Ideally the storage devices would be of the 128 Gb or larger range so as to be able to fit things like Aperture and iTunes libraries.
Of course they will be slow with the Air but they will be portable and functional in a pinch. There would still be speed where it would be needed most, which would be updating that type of database from one's main machine, since the use on the Air would for many of us be modest access to the data.
So you'd have a device which is fast to sync up from your main machine, and as fast and light and nimble as possible for use with the Air on the road where no power is available.

One of the enclosures which feature USB2 and FireWire 800 ports would be great, but many of the ones I am seeing seem to be larger than the USB only models. Of course there's more going on inside those cases that also have FireWire on their boards, but if there's a super slim one out there somewhere that would be cool to know about. This new 750 Gb 7200 RPM drive in a case that can use the speed would be interesting:

The new 320 Gb 7mm drive is also compelling for it's minimal size and the fact that it's a 7200 RPM model too, but of course it has less capacity. It will be interesting to see if it has less drain on the battery; in that regard, a single platter slower spindle speed drive would have the most advantage in theory but this one brings speed and a lighter thinner single platter design to the table so it's pretty interesting. Goal: obtain the fastest speed from a desktop Mac or MacBook Pro with FireWire 800 to the drive, then using the drive via USB with the Air with minimal power draw and a small physical size. I'm certainly not alone in this desire, the sheer lack of size of the 11" Air is such a game changer that smaller add ons become that much more compelling for maximum mobility.
It's like the first time I used a Duo, or the 1400, or the 2400, or the 12" PowerBook, only a LOT better! I've used almost every model over the years and dismantled them all too, my first PowerBook was almost 20 years ago. Been using the 11" non stop for 2 days now and I still bust out laughing every time I fire it up.

Broken/damaged song

On the Album "Strike Up the Band: Marches from Around the World" track 9 is damaged - the first few seconds are corrupted. I have reported this to iTunes Store and they said they will look into it but just under two weeks have passed and when I downloaded it again it is still busted. How long does this take to reload a 'song'? I am sure Naxos will not be pleased...

The store have now corrected the track but it took longer than I thought - a credit was issued. Just discovered that the previos track is also damaged.

Repair or part required

Hi, am new to this Blog/Forum so please bear with me while I try to explain. My Mum has an HP314 Photosmart camera and portable docking device. Mum loves it. The camera has a broken battery compartment lid and I don't know where to get a replacement, service or repair. Have tried to repair it myself - still busted!! Can anyone help please? Have seen things on Amazon and E-bay but not even sure I could get the old part off and new part on. Any thoughts??

I have had your exact problem with my old 3GS, now I cannot even get it to turn on, I still see that it is supposed to be charging though, but it never charges any so it seems.
I replaced the Lower Dock Connector Assembly back when it still charged while hooked to my PC, and it found it made no real difference.
