Weblogic shutting down keep-alive socket improperly?

We were sometimes experiencing strange IE behaviour when surfing on webapps on our Weblogic application servers. After investigation we found that IE has a bug in its resend behaviour, so when resending a POST request it sends the headers (including Content-Length) but forgets the form-data. This causes the server to time out waiting for the data. (Note: We are using Win2K and IE6 SP1 on the clients.)
The IE resend is triggered on a default installation when 31-59 seconds have passed since the last request.
This is because IE will try to reuse a socket that has been told to keep-alive until it has been idle for 60 seconds but WLS will by default close kept-alive sockets when they have been idle for 30 seconds. So in the range 31-59 seconds IE will consider the socket alive but WLS has closed it.
The resend bug is really an IE bug and doesn't concern WLS, but then I saw that IE would function correctly with an Apache server with a default keep-alive timeout of 15 seconds.
Using Ethereal I could get the information depicted in the tables below:
Weblogic with keep-alive timeout 30 secs
old socket
Time 00 : User navigates : IE POST request -> WLS, WLS HTML -> IE
Time 30 : Socket times out : (no network traffic)
Time 45 : User navigates : IE POST request -> WLS, WLS TCP_FIN -> IE
new socket
Time 45 : : IE resends POST request without form-data
Apache with keep-alive timeout 15 secs
old socket
Time 00 : User navigates : IE POST request -> Apache, Apache HTML -> IE
Time 15 : Socket times out : Apache TCP_FIN -> WLS
new socket
Time 45 : User navigates : IE POST request -> Apache, Apache HTML -> IE
To summarize, IE handles Apache well as Apache sends a TCP FIN telegram (to close the connection) as soon as the kept-alive socket times out.
Therefore IE never tries to reuse the socket but instead starts on a fresh one on the next navigation and a resend is never necessary.
Weblogic, on the other hand, doesn't send the TCP FIN (connection close) telegram until IE actually tries to use the connection even though it timed out 15 seconds earlier. In this case IE needs to resend the POST request and this is when the form-data is forgotten.
So, my question now is if WLS behaviour could be caused by not shutting down kept-alive sockets properly at keep-alive timeout? Or why are there no TCP FIN telegrams sent at timeout?
Mike Wilson

After doing some more investigation I have found that the "silent" shutdown of keep-alive sockets is only seen on the Linux version. The Windows version of Weblogic 8 behaves correctly, like Apache on Linux, but Weblogic on Linux does not...
Anyone can confirm if this is to be considered a bug?

  • Weblogic shuts down unexpectedly

    Hi all,
My weblogic server 4.5.1 with SP 8 shuts down every 15 mins. Does
anyone has any idea why is that happening? I am new to weblogic... so if
you guys need any additional information from me before you can help me out.
Please let me know. Many thanks!
    --Tony

We have a very similar sounding problem. We can start the server and recon users fine for a period of time. Then the recon seems to hang until the Weblogic server is restarted. I can still get into the Design Console or the web app but I can't successfully seem to get any more tcRecon instances. After the error no additional users will show up in the design console.
We have the PeopleSoft connector on OIM 9.1.0.2 and Weblogic 10.3.
Do you have any insight of things to look at?
    Thanks.

  • Flushing out remaining contents of a queue after weblogic shuts down

Anyway to tab into Weblogic shutdown event, so I can run some clean up code to

Is a weblogic shutdown class the way to go? If so, how could this be

  • WebLogic shuts down after 4 hours

    Hi:
    WL 5.1.0 sp 3
    SunOS 5.6
    J2 1.2.1_04
I run my application under load for 4 hour and then the server throws a
    bunch of exceptions like:
    ListenThread.run() failed
    <UTILS> UnsyncCircularQueue was full!
when it runs the expand command on the queue. After this it just shuts
    down.
Could anybody provide an explanation how this mechanism works and if
there are any tuning parameters to control the size of the queue.
    Thanks.

  • HT1430 phone wont shut down . keeps rebooting?

Phone wont shut off. it keeps rebooting. battery is running hot and drains quickly

My suggestion would be go to ASRock and ask over there, it could be a MB BIOS problem. The graphics card in itself should not be causing problems like that.
Only other thing I would suspect is a weak PSU. You were asked to list your PC hardware but failed to do so.
See my signature below for example of information to provide.

  • LDAP keep-alive connection ? (use of ldap_io_fns)

    Hi there,
I am facing a new req. from network security guys that want to close 'idle' connections that crosses firewalls. But as I do use persistent search connection which are not very 'busy' => i.e. not enough traffic to be kept open by FireWall rule.
Consequence my client could not 'detect' this cut of connection and do not receive any more the 'updates' through persistent search.
I am now trying to init my connection setting optional io_fns structure changing the socket func by my socket func that do create a keep-alive socket.
But it does not bind properly ... Init seem ok but bind never get out. LDAP receives bind and do log it but seem not able to respond properly ...
Any idea on how to use this io_fns struct ?
    Many thanks.
    Hedi.
    .

the problem is not that process is in foreground or background: the problem is the timeout: I need to avoid timeout, because the idea is to launch the report and then go out for lunch So I need to find a way in the code to advise the system that user has not to be logged out.
    Thanks

  • 4s wont shut down

my phone won't shut down; keeps restarting except when connected to charger

I would say that if you have done a restore of the device there is most likely something wrong with your hardware.
The software restore will fix most complications that happen on the software side. Has the device been dropped or come in contact with liquids? If not then I would get the device serviced if you can under the one year warranty or if applicable AppleCare Protection.

===== END OF THREAD DUMP ===============

    Hi,
This is a one off issue which occurred when there are thread dumps originating from WLS trying to determine if there are stuck threads in the system.
The upgrade to R28 is pertinent because these code level changes will not be feasible to be backported and that the code level fixes are included in R28.1.1.
Please upgrade the Jrockit version to R28.1.1.
    Mark If this helps you.

  • Keeping a socket connection alive

Hi, here is an interesting situation which I am trying to deal with. Basically what I want to have happen is the following:
Have a ServerSocket (called server) running and acception connections from users.
But where the catch comes in, is I want to be able to shut-down and restart the server without any of the connected users being disconnected.
One possible way I thought of doing this was using a middle-man style application (called client) which has a socket link betweeen it and the server, and another socket link between it and the user. But the server needs to be able to directly talk to the user and this is where I get stuck.. Basically then if the server gets shutdown, the user still has the active connect between it and the client, and when the server gets reconnected the link between the client and server is restored..
Any ideas? I don't know even if this middle-man style application is the best approach.
    Thanks,
    Derrick

How about having the server split in two, a lower
half that handles connections and an upper half that
handles the actual mechanism of your server's
functions. Make the lower half public, it knows
whether the upper half is alive or not, and keeps a
list of connections, buffering requests that may come
in while the upper half is being restarted.
you could do it in two processes, one for each half,
but you try to make the lower half simple and ensure
    it runs forever.
the upper half could come and go as it (and you) need
    it to.
now the upper half would run on a private port and
only the lower half would know about it.Yes, this is what I have done, but when the upper half wants input from the user in calles the inputsteam.. but the lowerhalf doesn't know that it has to then request the info from the user.. this is the problem I'm stuck at :(

  • Weblogic proxy plugin closes keep-alive connections to clients randomly

In short we have following arhitecture:
    clients ---> wl proxy plugin 1 ----> weblogic 1
    clients ---> wl proxy plugin 2 ----> weblogic 2
Beacuse of the application/installation specific requirements, we are not using failover, one wl proxy always forwards requests to one weblogic (simple configuration).
Application is TR-069 protocol based (SOAP over HTTP) so it very much relays on persistence TCP connections (Connection: keep-alive). This TCP persistence has to work correctly in order that TR-069 messages are exchanged in required order, otherwise we have a error on application layer.
Here and there we've noticed applications errors which suggest that we have some problems in TCP connection between the client and the weblogic server. After sniffing, we've noticed that weblogic proxy plugin (Apache) randomly, or because of some other reason we do not know, decides to close TCP connection to client, even app on weblogic did not request so ???
As a result, client opens new connection to the server with new TR-069 session and it gets bounced beacuse it allready has one open on weblogic server.
We've sniffed, traced everything we could, we were searching for patterns in time, etc... but we can not find the reason why proxy plugin decides to close the connection to the client (not to the weblogic server).
    Trace (replaced sensitive information):
    Thu Apr 29 15:05:50 2010 <958012725463463784> URL::parseHeaders: CompleteStatusLine set to [HTTP/1.1 200 OK]

!!!! Now it closes the TCP connection and inserts "Connection: close" HTTP header !!!
WL proxy plugin conf params are:
    WebLogicCluster $IP$:$PORT$
    DynamicServerList OFF
    KeepAliveTimeout 90
    MaxKeepAliveRequests 0
    KeepAliveSecs 55
    Apache worker configuration is:
    <IfModule mpm_worker_module>
    PidFile var/run/httpd-worker.pid
    LockFile var/run/accept-worker.lock
    StartServers 2
    MinSpareThreads 25
    MaxSpareThreads 75
    ThreadLimit 200
    ThreadsPerChild 200
    MaxClients 2000
    MaxRequestsPerChild 0
    AcceptMutex pthread
    </IfModule>
Why weblogic proxy plugin ignores Keep-alive directive and decides to close connection to the client by itself?
    Any help?

If a WebLogic Server instance listed in either the WebLogicCluster parameter or a dynamic cluster list returned from WebLogic Server fails, the failed server is marked as "bad" and the plug-in attempts to connect to the next server in the list.
MaxSkipTime sets the amount of time after which the plug-in will retry the server marked as "bad." The plug-in attempts to connect to a new server in the list each time a unique request is received (that is, a request without a cookie).
Note: The MaxSkips parameter has been deprecated as the MaxSkipTime parameter.
    See also here: http://download-llnw.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13222_01/wls/docs81/plugins/plugin_params.html
You said the problem arises under significant load. Maybe, it is wise to tune the number file descriptor's on your operating system. HTTP connections are nothing more than TCP sockets on the operating system. All modern operating systems treat sockets as a specialized form of file access and use data structures called file descriptors to track open sockets and files for an operating system process. To control resource usage for processes on the machine, the operating system restricts the number of open file descriptors per process. You should be aware that all TCP connections that have been gracefully closed by an application will go into what is known as the TIME_WAIT state before being discarded by the operating system.
On most unix systems you can use netstat -a | grep TIME_WAIT | wc -l to detemine the number of socket in time_wait state. You have to check with your system adminstrator how to tune the tcp_time_wait_interval. On solaris you can use: /usr/sbin/ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_time_wait_interval 60000

    Hi Murali,
Are you using 128bit version of the server for wls5.1 ? if so have you
correctly installed the Service pack 8 ?

  • PLEASE HELP ME..!! Mac shut down improperly..!!

Hi.. I had to improperly shut down my mac (the power button) a couple of times for the first time today..Needless to say i'm not happy and am concerned because incidents like these use to result in missing files on windows which later resulted in frequent system crash issues..!!
I love my mac and want to make sure that there is no damage caused and fix any damages if caused already.. Please suggest...

Forced shut down - holding the power button until the Mac shuts off - is obviously something you do as a last resort, after trying to force quit a frozen program, but very occasionally it may be necessary.
I would recommend doing a Disk Repair if you have had to do this - start up from your install disk (don't start an install) and choose 'Disk Utility' from the 'Utilities' menu. Run Disk Repair. if the report says 'File system was modified' run it again until it says 'The volume .... seems to be OK', then restart normally.
On most occasions I've had to do a forced shut-down (these have been much rarer since Snow Leopard) the subsequent disk repair has thrown up errors, which have been corrected. Probably not bothering wouldn't do much immediate harm, but if you keep having to do forced shut downs you might get an accumulation of errors which could be more serious. Hopefully not: but it's been known.
