WebObjects: XCode or Eclipse ?

I am new to developing using WebObjects. I get the sense that Apple is not actively working on WebObjects since the WebObjects manuals are quite old (2002-2004). Even books on Amazon are dated. Is that true?
Should I not be using WebObjects at all and code to straight J2EE (via Eclipse)?
Which IDE should I be using to develop a web server application, XCode or Eclipse? I hope the answer is XCode and not both.
Some guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, Apple are actively working on WebObjects, but they no longer officially support the legacy development tools, which includes XCode, for new development. The recommended tools are Eclipse + WOLips, however much of the existing documentation still makes reference to the legacy tools.
In some cases, such as EOModeler, the eclipse based tools attempt to emulate the legacy UI and concepts fairly closely, so the legacy documentation is still relevant.
The documentation is slowly being addressed by apple, but isn't a serious issue because the vast majority of it is still accurate, and there is good community written documentation and support available on the wocommunity wiki:
http://wiki.objectstyle.org/confluence/display/WO/Home
A good place to start learning about WebObjects is the WOCommunity website:
http://www.wocommunity.org
WebObjects has a small yet thriving community, I encourage you to give it a try.

I am just curious to know which one is better in reference to development of classical C, xCode or eclipse.

If you want to program on a Mac, use Xcode. No Mac users use Eclipse so if you get stuck, there will be no one to help. Plus, with Eclipse you couldn't build true Mac programs. Eclipse is designed for Java. It can do C and C++ too, but it can't build true Mac programs. Mac programmers speak Xcode.
If you are new to programming, start with vi and the terminal. Write some simple command-line programs that way to learn how to use a text-based editor and to learn how the compiler works. Once you are ready to do something more interesting, you can write the same kind of program in Xcode. Start with one of the Project templates. There are a few versions of command-line tools.

  • Exporting screen layouts made with Creative Cloud for Xcode and Eclipse.

    Hi,
I would like to know if it is possible to create the screens layouts (User Interface) with Creative Cloud and export the code to my developers in a way they can add additional coding to the screens I've created.
I am insterested in export to iOS devices (Xcode) and Android (Eclipse).

Adobe could never figure out why people were experiencing the problem, telling them to go to appdata rename this, uninstall this that, and the freaking coresync x64 wouldn't erase.
I was lucky that I born in the SSD era that it didn't take me that much time restarting my computer, I had to restart my computer so many times...and all my efforts was unnecessary.
I couldn't find this thread until today. Thanks. Adobe should request Google to move this thread up.

  • C++: Xcode vs Eclipse

    Hello.
I am just a new Mac OS X (Intel-based) user. I've been a C++ software developer for years under the Windows and using Visual Studio. I want to know which among the two IDEs are the best for C++ development. I plan to develop applications (mostly games) on Mac and iOS. Though my real plan right now is to make C++ game engine work in Mac OS X as well. I know the choice of IDE is a matter of preference but I want to hear the pro and cons. (But please don't fight over this).
So far here's what I know about the two.
    Xcode
+ Already by Apple (better compatibility, hence not a bloatware)
    Eclipse
    + Some Intellisense
    + Refactoring
To be honest, my current choice is to stick with Xcode since I don't have to install another app (Eclipse) as I can sacrifice Intellisense and refactoring features. I am not affected by source control decisions as well because I am using Perforce (I think that itself doesn't integrate well on any of the two).
Please share me your experiences and thoughts on this.

    adam.roth wrote:
I see. No specifics as to why you feel that way?
The original poster asked for "experiences and thoughts", not specifics.
I used Eclipse back in 2006, I think. I was working in Java. As an IDE it was adequate, but no more than that. It was like the first layer of options all worked well, but if you went one layer deeper, nothing worked. The best part about it was the custom UI library for Java. That is the only decent Java UI I have ever seen. I found Eclipse a bit ugly, awkward to use, and not entirely pleasant. Xcode is much better in all those respects. Plus, trying to build Mac applications in Eclipse is just a waste of time.
For instance, I can say that XCode4 is junk because it crashes several times a day (for me and for everyone else in the office), and brings up messages asking if it should crash or "continue in an inconsistent state" several times more.
You mean the beta version? Have you been submitting bug reports on these?
It's junk because its SCM diff tool does not work correctly when comparing incoming updates against the workspace copy (when it works at all...half the time I have to fall back to command-line SVN because the integrated version gets wedged). It's junk because although I can now manage multiple projects in a single window (and XCode3 is junk because it can't manage multiple projects in a single window at all), I cannot set the file search to filter to a single project or group of resources when I search. It's junk because I can't move the search navigator (or any of the other navigators) somewhere else so that I can see both my search results and my project files at the same time.
You are just hung up on my use of the word "junk". I'm no fan of Xcode's SCM. That part of Xcode truly is junk. Amazingly, SCM support in Xcode gets worse with each new version. I use CVS and will continue to do so, so I guess I won't be complaining about it anymore in Xcode4. Apple's Package Maker is also junk. Overall, however, the Xcode experience is fairly pleasant. I also use it for building websites and eBooks too. I would never try that in Eclipse.
However, I do agree that Eclipse is not great for C and C++ development. It was designed as an IDE for coding in Java, and while there are plugins to add support for other languages they are typically not that great. Generally speaking, you'd be better off with an IDE that was designed expressly for C/C++ development. However as for the question of Eclipse vs. XCode for C++ I think there is no clear winner. Eclipse is not very good at C++, and XCode is just not very good.
It is a moot point. The original poster was wrong on one key point - "I know the choice of IDE is a matter of preference". It isn't a matter of preference. There is Xcode and nothing else. There used to be CodeWarrior, but they are gone through their own misdeeds.
Anyone is welcome to build their own IDE for MacOS X if they want. You could even enhance Eclipse. I suspect it would be much easier to just start from scratch with Cocoa and Xcode.

  • Edit apps in xcode and eclipse to add email reporting ?

Has any one tried this or know if it is possible?
I'm researching an idea for an e-learning app and captivate is the obvious choice, but I'm struggling to find a way of allowing the user of a standalone version of captivate apps to report their progress.
Printing, saving as a pdf, email - whatever. The closest I can find is the captivatedev Google LMS widget, but the number of delivery addresses is pooled for all users of the app and not enough unique delivery addresses would be allowed.

It depends on what exactly you want to do.
    1. If you want to add folders to move mail to then you do it as you explained. if that is not working for you go to any computer that is connected to the internet and go to icloud.com and login with your apple id and password then click on the mail icon and at the bottom left of the screen you can add folders.
    2. If you want to add other accounts such as hotmail, gmail, or others then you have to do that by going to settings > Mail, Contact, Calendars > Add Account

I am also going to get a 500GB external HDD with it and I would just like to know if it would be good to run Xcode or eclipse on it so I can code C++? Please note that I will install Xcode/eclipse to the external HDD If that affects the performance? Thanks.

  • Monitor/tv suggestions

Does anyone have a suggestion for a tv or montior to use with the mini mac, i put and hdmi cable on a 1080 lcd tv but it looked blurry

I am a computer programmer. I have the DELL P2311H. and I can rotate the screen 90º to write code with Xcode and Eclipse.
Here you have a review of "his brother" the U2311H. Before I bought it I read both specifications sheets
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kzpx526WFvs
It has 1920x1080. but the Mini DisplayPort has a resolution of 2560x1600, around 27" screens.
    The problem is the price.
    24" USD 269
    27" USD 999
Too much for a difference of 3" (for my budget, of course)

  • Can I just install Leopard over Tiger?

I have an OS 10.4 Tiger MacBook Pro and I'm thinking about upgrading it to Leopard. What happens when you do that? Does the installer wipe out everything on your HD giving you a blank system where you have to reinstall all your apps and so on, or does it sort of upgrade the infrastructure, leaving your apps and files in place?
I haven't run into too many instances where I couldn't run something because I don't have the latest OS, but there have been a few. Would I be better off waiting a while and just buying a new machine when the time comes?
I have a lot of stuff like Photoshop and music software. I also have various development tools like XCode and Eclipse. I also have drivers for stuff like my scanner and digital camera and whatnot.
Thanks for any info on this topic.
    Thanks!

Absolutely! I did it that way on both my MBPs with perfect success.
Just be sure to backup Tiger onto an external drive for several reasons:
    1 Stuff happens
2 You may want to keep some old Tiger stuff, and if you use a cloner for the backup, you can always boot into it and use it.
On each of my two MBPs, I created a small partition for Tiger and cloned Tiger onto it. I use the larger partition for my TM backups.
I have been using both MBPs running Leopard since a short time after Leopard was released and have not experienced any of the issues others have had. Also both my systems are up-to-date with the exception of the latest Safari.

  • Python 3.3.2 help ??

I feel really stupid writing this BUT, I wrote apps 17 to 22 years ago starting with MS Access, with some Exel and Word on the side. After some education I was using MS Visual Basic on the front end and MS SQL as the database.  It was kind of the **** at the time.  I should have learned C++ but I didn't  and Java was brand new and I left the IT world at that time. I have now decided to learn to write code again just for fun and to do something constructive.  So I downloaded Xcode and looked at a few beginners tutorials on Youtube and was blown away at how overwhelming the development environment was.  So I have backed way down to an intro to programming book that uses Python 3.0.  The Python web site will only let me download 3.3.2.  Every time I "Launch" Python a Preferences screen opens.  Oh, by the way, the book has told me to create a new file.  I don't see anything that needs to be changed in Preferences, but I don't enough about Python to be sure.  I can't download Python 3.0.  I tried to, the web site won't let me.  Anyway, I close preferences and click on file.  The new option is grayed out.  I can not select it.  I need to select and create a new file to move on with my lessons.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Robert

It's been a long time since I messed around with Python on the mac.  My app is Python Launcher, 3.1.2, and it also has New grayed out.  As I recall, I used a text editor to create one test file, hello.py, (below).  Then I invoke the launcher and use Open to access it.  It runs in a terminal window (bash), providing the output.
This isn't a programming environment like xcode or eclipse.  The app is just a wrapper around the interpreter and outputs using terminal.
    ---- hello.py ----
    llo.py # python hello program
    print("hello world")

  • Using Eclipse instead of XCode/Visual C++ ?

    Hello everybody,
I am pretty sure this question has already been asked, but I can't get any answer.
Why does Adobe recommend (and distribute samples) based on XCode and Visual C++? Why is there no documentation/projects based on Eclipse ? I can't see any problems using Eclipse, excepted Xcode/Visual C++ based sample projects and docs.
I have been working for monthes on Eclipse and I can only see advantages using it :
Cross-platform : no need to have Windows and OSX projects.
More functionalities : What about functionality such as call hierarchy, classes navigator, automatic suggestions... ?
Better integration : CPPUnit, Maven... What a wonderful world out of reach !
Has anyone among you ever tried to use Eclipse for InDesign plugin development ? What were the problems ? Why Adobe does not event mention the possibility to develop with Eclipse ? Is it really difficult to migrate to Eclipse projects ?
I'd like to read your feedbacks
    Thanks in advance.

  • No Webobjects in "New Project" Assistant

    Hello,
I would like to learn how to program with Webobjects. I installed Xcode 3.0 and failed to include the Webobject option, I then went back to the DVD and installed the Webobject pacakge.
When I open up Xcode and click on "New Project" There is no category for "Webobjects", every tutorial I read online says that there should be one there. They all start with "Click on new project -> webobjects -> direct.. etc".
I uninstalled the Developer package using:
    sudo /Developer/Library/uninstall-devtools --mode=all
I then trashed the /Developer directory and followed with a fresh install of Xcode off the 10.5 DVD this time selecting Wbobjects from the list of items to install but I still don't get the option for Webojects when I open a new project.
If anyone can help or tell me what I am doing wrong I would appreciate it.
    Thank you!

For some unknown reasons Apple has left out most of the builder tools for Webobjects in the Leopard release. Documentation for Webobjects states the following:
"The following tools are deprecated and no longer supported in Webobjects 5.4 and later:
EOModeler, RuleEditor, Webobjects Builder, WOALauncher and Java Client. Webobjects templates are not available for creating new projects in XCode on Mac OS X v10.5 and later".
In the discussion groups for Webobjects at developer home page you can find suggestions on third part tools replacing the deprecated tools (e.g. plugin for Webobjects in Eclipse).
If you have access to a Mac computer where Leopard is not pre-installed you may install Tiger OS in its own partition and play with the earlier version of Webobjects which comes with Tiger.
    Hope this helps.
    With regards,
