Webstart cache bug? ClassnotfoundExeption BUT IS IS THERE!

Hi,
we have a swing application that is launched via webstart.
This worked fine over years with all versions of java 1.4 up to 1.5, but with 1.6 from time to time we are facing a strange problem:
-From time to time, rarely, the application cannot be launched via webstart, it returns with a class-not-found-exception. Neither the jnlp., nor the jars or anything else has changed!!!
-I know, the Expiry attributes in the HTTP header have to be set correctly, and i verified also that the http communication is correct(by monitoring the network).
-This happens only if the application is in the Java webstart cache. If the problem occurs and i clean the cache, the problem is solved.
-However, if the problem occurs, the files are inside the javaws cache and the class that is not being found by Webstart is definetly there!!!
-You can easily tell if JavaWS attempts to download a resource or not, but in the error case it looks like it accesses ONLY the cache , but it fails to read from it.
-We think that, from time to time, Java WS fails reading the jar out of the cache, since in 75% of all error cases its the Main-Class that is not being found (but it is there in the cache). The fact that the remaining 25% other classes are not found show that the problems does not come from my main class.
-This happens for a lot of users (as i said rarely, but it happens). Its not ideal to tell a end-user to flush the webstart-cache, so has anybody experienced similar problems or knows whats going wrong here?
many thanks...

I analyzed the cache of webstart and i found out the following:
Unlike as in 1.5, in the new 1.6 Version Webstart places jar files under a cryptic name in the cache. When viewing the cache by the java control panel, you'll see your jar-file with a size in KB, lets say 4500. When looking in the cache, the 4500 are divided into the jar-file (the actually 4000KB on the server) and and .idx-file (the remaining 500KB).
1.) Today, i launched the ws application for the first time after a long period on the testing pc. This caused WS to create a new subfolder under its own caching-folder, where it has stored a .idx-file and a .lap file and a file with no file-extension.
content of .idx: the URL of the jnlp that i loaded (nothing else)
content of .lap: the date+time from last access today, the number of launches of the application for today, the entry "forcedUpdateCheck=true", and the parameter "lastAccessed" with the date+time for today as value.
content of file with no file-extension: the jnlp file itself
->the jar file is missing. As far as i understand, this is no error, it can be in any subfolder in the caching-directory.
2.)I found the according .jar-file in the cache in another subfolder. By analyzing the content of this folder, you can tell that this is the folder created at the last time i launched the WS application some days ago (it contains .idx etc with date information) .
The jar file is correct and by renaming it to .zip you can easily see that the missing class IS DEFINETELY THERE!!!
3.)in the old cache-subfolder from the last launch some days ago, the .idx-file shows some HTTP-information, also the header: it gives an "expiry" for the http-call for the jnlp file for today, at the first time i accessed the jnlp (the very first launch today).
Conclusion:
Under strange conditions and if the resource expires, it is possible that JavaWs is not able to update the cache. This results in the fact that classes cannot be found because the jar-file cannot be read, due to:
a)missing mapping of new entry to old value in another folder
b)concurrent modification
Possible reasons:
-concurrent modification of the folders is causing trouble to the cache management logic, results in loosing the abillity to map the cache entry to the according value in another subfolder in the cache. I think the naming of files in the cache has been changed from 1.5 to 1.6, so perhaps there is a still a bug. If the cache is cleared by the java control panel, the problem is gone.
Last but not least:
Some of my collegues had the idea that the problem is also related to mutlipe launches of Webstart or any Java-Application, wich might cause problems in terms of concurrencies of java processes. The interesting thing is, that the moment i launched the same application under my ide (eclipse) as an application via giving the main-method as startpoint (means non-Webstart-mode), and during the launch i started the same application as a webstart-application from a browser, the problem occured. Not to say that launching applications from my ide has something to do with webstart (god,hopefully not), but it is strange that exactly at this moment the problem occured....but: also end-users with no ide's that launch over webstart see the problem. btw: the launch of webstart failed, but the concurrent launch via eclipse was successful.

  • Can't believe the caching bug is STILL there

    Hi,
    I MUST be missing something. It can't be true that this has not been fixed after so many years.
    So well, the problem is, every time you load an external asset or file, say for example using a Loader object or a URLLoader object (the same happened in AS2 with MovieClipLoader, LoadVars, XML.load() etc etc, and even before with loadMovie, etc) - every time you load a file, the Flash Player caches that file, and this is independent from your browser: it is Flash Player's own (and primitive) caching mechanism.
    Whenever you load a file with the same URL again, no matter whether the file has been changed or not, Flash Player will use the cached copy, and there's NO WAY to prevent that - there are a few workaround that I will discuss later but they don't solve the problem completely, besides being terribly combersome.
    Now, the HTTP protocol has a wonderful mechanism to manage the caching of files in an intelligent way, which has been working for years and, I think, was invented even before flash existed, however at least 10 years ago, and it works fine.
    If an HTML page has an IMG tag with an image, for example, and if the browser has already a cached version of the image with that URL, the browser will first ask the server for that file and declare it has a cached version with date xxx; if the server's file is not newer than xxx, then the server replies that the file has not changed and the browser can use its cached version (or insist to redownload it if he wishes). But if the file on the server is newer, the server will reply with the new file, and the browser will NEVER show an obsolete cached version of the image (or whatever file).
    Now, I don't know why, Flash Player was designed in a very primitive way that ignores this whole mechanism provided and standardised by the HTTP protocol. Flash Player will ALWAYS use a cached version of the file if he has one, it won't worry about veryfying whether it is obsolete or not.
    So, unless the user clears its cache, whenever you update an xml, txt, jpg or whatever file that is loaded within your flash application, users that have previously visited the page may still see the old version.
    Now, there's an easy workaround for ensuring that a cached version of the file is NEVER used, which is appending a "?somerandomname="+n to the filename, where n is obtained for example as n=(new Date()).value(); in order to ensure that it is always different.
    This way, the complete url of the file is always different and the cached version will never be used.
    However, this is not a solution either. For small text files it is ok, but for images and swf's for example, you DO want the cached file to be used IF it is not obsolete. Otherwise, returning visitors will always have to wait for the complete download time of everything, including files that have been downloaded yesterday and have not been modified.
    So, this problem has been solved ages ago by the HTTP protocol, but the Flash Player is naive and ignores it.
    I used to use 2 workarounds: the one I have mentioned for small files (texts, xml's), and the following one for files that can be updated every once in a while:
    In the main html page, I append "?lastupdate=dddddd" to the swf name, where dddddd is a manually edited date of the last time something relevant has been updated. So for example:
    <object ....... etc etc> <param name="movie" value="mainswffile.swf?lastupdate=20090625"/>... <embed etc etc etc src="mainswffile.swf?lastupdate=20090625"/></object>
    Or something like that.
    When I update some of the files that are to be loaded, I manually edit the "lastupdate" thing in the html.
    Then in the ActionScript programming I use the _root.lastupdate variable to append to the filenames of images or assets I load.
    All this is horribly cumbersome and error-prone. Image you deploy a website to a client that will be able to update his own texts and images: you have either to explain him how to edit the html file also, or create some complicated server-side or client-side script to manage the cache-avoiding system. That is, reinventing the wheel, in this case the cache.
    Every time a new version of the player was released, I expected it to fix the stupid caching problem and to make my cumbersome tricks obsolete and unnecessary.
    I expected to see that the new version would make proper use of HTTP caching protocol specifications, and use cached files ONLY when they are not outdated, after verifying it with the server according to the HTTP protocol.
    Every new version of the player was a disappointment.
    Then I hope the new version of the language, Action Script 3.0, would fix this.
    No, it seems it doesn't.
    I've done some tests with AS3 and with my great and sad surprise, the caching "bug" is still there.
    Well, the bug, not the "bug": this is a bug proper, because there's no reason why it should work this way.
    So, my question is.
    Maybe am I missing something? Is there a way, by using some method or property of URLLoader, Loader and/or URLRequest, to tell Flash Player to use the cache in an intelligent way? I mean, in a not-astonishingly-stupid way?
    Note that I'm not talking about forcing it to NOT USE cache at all: I mean using a cached version when it is appropriate, and redownloading the file when needed, as all decent http application have done for years.
    Perhaps there IS a way to solve this.... It should be the default behaviour and should be transparent, but however, if there is a SERIOUS fix (not a hackaround), that would at least solve the problem.
    Do anybody know of a method that really works?
    (I have read of people trying by using http headers with caching directives but without success; or in the best case maybe they were able to force never-caching, which is NOT a solution as I explained)
    Thanks in advance.
    And if there is any Adobe developer listening, please fix this bug since it is really a shame that an application written in 2008 or 2009 suffers from a problem that was elegantly and definitely solved in the XX century.
    Regards,
    m.

    I wrote a long reply and when I posted it it vanished.
    I had even control+c'opied it before submitting but it didn't even get into my clipboard.
    Shame on this forum (sorry to say that, but that's what I have to say).
    So, I'll try to write it again but it won't be the same: the amount of rage is augmented.
    Thank you BWolfe for letting me know that Flash now (since last year) has a bug management system. It was also such an enormous shame that it didn't have one.
    Adobe used to confuse bug reports with feature requests; now this kind of confusion is still partially there and it is reflected by the voting thing, which is an absolute aberration. In a decent bug management system, the developers take the responsibility to give the bugs the priority they deserve; and no matter how low the priority, even the smallest bug ALWAYS get into the queue.
    Now this bug we are discussing has been well known for AT LEAST EIGHT YEARS and I am not exaggerating at all, as I started using flash in 2001 and the issue was already mentioned here and there in forums etc; probably some blind people didn't see it as a bug (rather as a situation you have to face or work around), but it was known. And the very solution, as I already pointed out, was there even before Flash was conceived (well, for the sake of scientifical rigour, I should say, before Flash was commercialized): the HTTP protocol has the capability to perfectly manage file caching in a manner transparent to the higher layer.
    So, since I don't believe that nobody at Adobe (formerly Macromedia) has heard about a bug that every intermediate-level actionscript developer in the world knows of, it is already kind of a shame that we have to report it in 2009, but that's ok. But that we have to get votes, no, that's an insult.
    Jesus, ActionScript is a programming language, man, A PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE... it is not like Photoshop or Premiere; and it seems like in so many years, people who manage it haven't yet realised it completely.
    Big Brother contestants should be voted. Feature requests may be voted. Bugs cannot be voted should just be fixed one by one as soon as possible.
    Well, sorry for the rant and thank you for the answers.
    Hope this gets through this time.

  • Download flv starts download but just sits there 'starting' in the downloads box

    i can download normally with no problem but when i detect a movie with download flv add-on and select to download ,it goes to the download window but just sits there in a list saying 'starting' its like something is blocking it ? any answers?

    If you are watching that video then you may need to wait until it has finished and the video will be saved from the cache.
    Which extension are you using?

  • Opening brower with URL of file contained in WebStart cache

    Hi all,
    I've written a webstart application that needs to open a browser and show some help pages that are stored within the webstart cache.
    I'm using the BasicService.showDocument() method to open the browser. My problem is that I don't know how to obtain the URL of the index.html that I want to show. The URL below is returning a URL that the browser does not understand:
    URL: jar:file:C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Dados%20de%20aplicativos/Sun/Java/Deployment/javaws/cache/http/D128.1.1.111/P9080/DMfupws/RMfup.jar!/help/index.html
    private void showHelp()
        try
            // Lookup the javax.jnlp.BasicService object
            BasicService bs = (BasicService)ServiceManager.lookup("javax.jnlp.BasicService");
           // Get the URL of the help index
           URL jarURL = this.getClass().getClassLoader().getResource("help/index.html");
            bs.showDocument(url);
    catch( UnavailableServiceException ue) {
                   ue.printStackTrace();
    }Anybody know if this is possible?
    thanks in advance!
    Craig

    You HTML file is inside a jar file, of course a web
    browser won't be able to open it. What you can do is
    to save the HTML pages in a temp directory on the
    local drive and point the browser to index.html in
    that directory.Thanks for your reply.
    I had thought that copying the files would be an option, however I just thought I'd ask to see if there existed an existing mechanism to perform this task.
    Another option I tried was using Rachel (http://www.vamphq.com/resources.html) which is meant to simplify resource loading in Web Start. Unfortunately the openBrowser() method refused to work with Rachel specific class:// URL handler.
    If anyone has had any success using Rachel to do this, please reply.

    Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
    Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
    You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

    Hi,
    Since you already have one copy activated the serial number must be logged in your account details - I would first check that the one logged and the one you are attempting to enter are the same.
    You can check your account details by going to www.adobe.com and clicking on Manage Account. You need to sign in with your Adobe Id and then click on View All under Plans & Products. Next click on View your products and after a while it should produce your list.
    If there is a problem with the serial number, only Adobe can help you there (we are just users). Please see the response in this thread

    There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
    Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

    If your computer is running an OS X prior to Snow Leopard 10.6,
    the answer (if it is an Intel-based Mac; not old PowerPC model)
    would be to buy the retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD from Apple
    for about $20, and install it. Then update that to 10.6.8 by using
    the installed Snow Leopard online to get Combo Update v1.1 for
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8. After that is installed & updated, run the
    system's Software Update again, to see what else is available to
    that system.
    Later systems can then be looked into at Mac App Store, once
    the computer is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
    And if your computer is a Power PC (G4/G5, etc) and has no
    Core2Duo kind of CPU -- See "About this Mac" in apple menu

    It's possible that the pages you are attempting to open simply won't work with that old web browser.
    If you're using Mac OS X Tiger, update to the latest version, which is 10.4.11. (You might be using that already. Your profile says you're running 10.4.1, but I bet that's just a typo.)
    Then get the latest version of Safari that will run on Tiger. (And... you have that already: 4.1.3.)
    You might try a more modern browser designed specifically for your current OS. That would be TenFourFox.

  • My ipad mail is synced to my iMac mail account. On iPad, I can only see my inbox and sent messages. I can't see any of the folders I have created on my iMac. How do I do that? Probably a dumb question, but I know there's a lot of smart people out there!

    My iPad mail is synced to my private email account, which I organise on my iMac. On iPad, I can only see inbox and sent messages folders, not any of the other folders in my email account I have created on my iMac. How do I get iPad to show my other folders? Probably a dumb question, but I know there's a lot of smart people out there.

    If you select a mailbox, you should get an Edit button (easier to see in landscape mode). Clicking the button will provide you with check circles for the messages. You also get Delete and Move buttons at the bottom. Check the messages you want to move and then navigate to the mailbox you want to drop them into. I think as long as you can navigate to a mailbox you can move the messages to it.
    In the Mac Mail application and probably Outlook on the Windows side, you also setup rules to move messages to specific mailboxes. If the mailboxes are stored on the server, then you can have the sorting done on the server and they should appear that way on the iPad. If your later messages do not show up, you may need to have the iPad app pulled down more messages until they are all showing.

  • Just updated my iPhone 4 from IOS 6.1.3 to 7.1.2, I know I am behind the times, but I got there eventually! All seems well but I have one specific problem and hope someone can offer a helpful suggestion.

    Just updated my iPhone 4 from IOS 6.1.3 to 7.1.2, I know I am behind the times, but I got there eventually! All seems well but I have one specific problem and hope someone can offer a helpful suggestion.
    On opening the app "Find my iPhone" I add my password and sign in, to be greeted with a screen that says;
    "Update Find My iPhone. A new version of Find My iPhone is available from the App. Store. You must install the update to continue using the app. Update now"
    On hitting the "Update now" button I'm taken to the relevant page on the App Store, to be told that I cannot update as it needs IOS8 to be able to continue and as my iPhone is only a 4 cannot install IOS8.
    I'm left going around in circles. The only thing would be to delete the app, but looks like I could not re-install the version I would need. Any body have any thoughts or suggestions? (Apart from updating my phone, I have a few months left on the contract!)
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I have tried as you suggested, and when opening the "purchased" apps some have the icloud logo next to them, but I only have "OPEN" against "Find My iPhone". When opening it up, it goes through the same routine; needs to be updated before proceeding, and wouldn't update because I don't have IOS8.
    Anything else I could try, or am I doomed!
    All of your help is much appreciated, thanks

    From your statements above, it sounds like you never tried to burn a CD for at least the first year that you owned the laptop, as it had a one year warranty on it. While you might have used it frequently to install software,  play DVDs, Blu-Ray disks, etc, that's unclear from your statements. Nonetheless, it might just be dirty-dusty. So, before deleting-uninstalling any software, and given they're cheap, try a CD-DVD Cleaner Disk first and see if that resolves your problems.
    Let us know what happens. Good luck.
