Week 25 MBP questions....

As I posted earlier, I just bought myself a new MBP and have just recieved word that it is shipped and on its way...however, I just was reading some of the other threads in which it seems that the week 25 build machines had a technical fix done for the whine. As some of you have noted, it truly is a crapshoot as to whether I will get a broken machine or not, but if the 25s have been fixed, it would seem that my liklihood of getting a broken machine would be reduced.
that said, what are the chances that a MBP, 120 GB HD, glossy screen, 512 RAM ordered Saturday, July 1 will be a week 25 or later machine? Those of you with week 25 machines, when did you order/buy them?
Thanks,
Newmac

Thanks guys....I got my free iPod today from FedEx and tracked my MBP on its way in from Alaska...if I compared the two times correctly, I should have my new computer by tomorrow. I feel not unlike a 6 year old listening to the radio people "tracking" santa claus on christmas eve....haha. Nonetheless, I am still very much excited and I must say, if it does come tomorrow morning, work is going to be long, slow, boring, and filled with anticipation for it to be over.
But anywho, thanks guys for your help! And when it does come I'll write a quick post letting you guys know my initial reaction and experience!

  • Upgrade to fibre 38 mbps question

Hi, I am considering upgrade from 4mbps to 'up to 38 mbps fibre' (I am an EE customer). I've read that some people had to wait up to 2-3 weeks to get their upgrade working. My question is: am I going to be disconnected from current broadband when I order the upgrade? or will I still be able to use my internet on current speed and then they will swtich the speeds one day? Thanks in advance

Having recently switched from ADSL to fibre here what happened with my connection (though I'm on Sky):
Day 1 - ordered the fibre upgrade.
Day 2 - I was given my fibre activation date.
Day 10 - new router arrived (with Sky the router works with both ADSL and fibre so I plugged it in straight away and it worked on my ADSL connection.  I don't know but I suspect EE are the same).
Day 16 - my ADSL connection went down around 16:00 and approx. 15 mins later the fibre connection kicked in.
The average fibre activation time is approx. 14 days regardless of your ISP and is based simply on how busy BT Openreach are in your area.  Your ADSL should carry on working right up to your fibre activation date.
Th engineer has to switch your ADSL connection from within the exchange to the fibre cab your telephone line is linked to.  Engineers are no longer needed to visit your home for fibre activations.

  • 2011 mbp questions: os, accounts, etc.

hello good folks. i just bought a macbook pro for my daughter's birthday in 2 weeks, i don't want to set it up until then, and i have a couple of questions:
    1. how can i tell if it has lion pre-installed? i opened the box just to make sure everything looked okay and there was no os disc like there was with my 2010 macbook pro, is that a good clue?
    2. we already have 1 macbook pro, 2 iphone 4's and 1 ipod touch 4g in the house all with the same apple id and same itunes account. it works for us so i can keep track of my daughter's downloads. can i set this new mbp up with new admin account/password with parental controls, but still register it with the old apple id and  authorize itunes under the same apple id as always? does that question make sense?
as always thanks for any help.

i wanted to figure it out without turning it on yet, but thanks.
Oh sorry, I must have skimmed your message too fast. If there are no restore discs in the box, it's safe to assume it has Lion because I know for a fact Apple does not make restore discs anymore.
Additional tip: If you want to have an easy means of restoring Lion, you can buy a Lion USB Thumb Drive for $70 (I know, typical Apple ripoff) at the store:

In any case you'll find out when your daughter's birthday comes I suppose.

  • Had the Z1 for a week, further questions (long post!)

    Hi again,
So I've had the phone for about a week now and have been using it a lot, setting it up the way I want and learning my way around it (and around Android in general).
I have a few more questions I hope someone will be able to answer for me.
    1. Still unsure about this - is swipe input on the keyboard supposed to work globally, i.e. anywhere (any app, any screen) where the keyboard pops up?  It doesn't for me.  It works in emails, SMS, but for example, doesn't work when searching in Play Store.  I'm sure it also doesn't work in some other screens, but can't remember exactly where.  I just know I get used to it, and then I start swiping somewhere and am surprised when it doesn't work.
    2. I still can't get keyboard shortcuts (Settings, Language & Input, Personal Dictionaries) to work, no matter what I try.
    3. Another keyboard related thing.  I read a review (http://unleashthephones.com/2013/09/15/sony-xperia-z1-review/) where the reviewer said it's possible to use hand-writing recognition, and also reduce the size of the keyboard on the screen to help with one-handed typing.  I can't find either of these options, do they exist?
    4. Camera. Can you confirm it's NOT possible to use HDR and Image Stabilisation simultaneously?  On my phone, switching one on cancels the other.
    5. This is probably a more general Android OS question/observation.  I noticed the home screen doesn't rotate and is always in portrait.  I suppose this is how it is on most phones.  However, as the Z1 has the charging dock connectors on the side and is in landscape orientation when charging in the dock, I find this a bit odd, especially since not even the clock widget (either digital, or analogue which is especially confusing, as it's so minimalist, when turned into landscape reads totally wrong time) rotates.  I suppose this isn't really a question, but more of an observation, and I'm just seeking to confirm this, and perhaps find out if there's a way around it?
    6. In one week I've had the phone, I've had about 5 instances where the phone said one app or the other has stopped responding and was shut down (and most of those were stock apps, like camera or a messaging app), and the phone totally froze on me once when I was writing an SMS.  Is this relatively normal on Android?  I could live with it, I suppose, if it doesn't become more frequent, just asking to confirm.
    7. A tiny issue, but still.  In another post, someone advised it was possible to restart/reboot (as opposed to shut down and manually power up again) the phone by holding the power and volume keys together until the phone vibrates.  I tried this, but no matter how long or short I hold both buttons, the phone only shuts down and doesn't restart.
    8. I'm considering doing a factory reset, as I'm having a few issues, like the swipe not working, crashing, and also the language confirmation after every restart of the phone (it's been suggested elsewhere this might have been caused by initially using and setting up the phone before a SIM card was inserted, which was my case.  I used the phone on wi-fi before I received the SIM from my carrier).  So, first, do you think doing a factory reset is a good idea?  I came across another post where a user ended up with more weird issues AFTER doing this, so I'm unsure.  I'm also not looking forward trying to restore every minute customisation I have already made.
    - What's the best practice when doing this?
    - Are there any tools to help with it, especially to help with restoring previously made settings?
    - Does this void the warranty?
This is probably more than enough, and thanks in advance to anyone who bothers reading all this and offering some suggestions!
    Vlad.

    1. Swipe should work in every apps wherever keyboard pops up, provided you have enabled it.
    2. By shortcuts you mean? you can add words in your personal directories, which will appear while using swipe to make things easier.
    4. Yea, HDR and Image Stabilization wont work together (officially)
    6. It happens
    7. yea, it does reboot, once 3 vibration which is for reboot, 5 vibration is for forced shutdown.
    8. Using PCC to repair your phone is the best way, you can use google's own option auto backup and restore (provided you have enabled it in settings) which restore settings contacts, however make sure to have a backup just in case. warranty wont be void for using PCC or SUS.
    1. Definitely doesn't for me.
    2. I mean under personal dictionary, I created several shortcuts, for example, when you type "btw", it should automatically get converted into "by the way".  You input the shortcut and the phrase you want it to convert the shortcut into.  But it doesn't work.
    4. Thanks.
    8. Does this "repair" fully reset the phone, or preserves the settings?
Thanks for taking the time to read through my post and come up with some answers and suggestions.

  • Days of the week - Newbie question

Please excuse my question as it is probably very elementary and basic to all of you, but I am just getting started learning how to use Numbers and have run into a question that I can't find an answer for in the books or on the tutorials.
I want to have a column with the days of the week (Mon, Tues...) to automatically update as I proceed down the rows of data. I can not come up with the proper formula or the proper way to express a formula to make it perform that task. Any help would be appreciated.
This isn't as important as most of your things since I'm retired and just using this for my personal enjoyment, but I'm sure learning a lot! Thanks, John.

Type Monday in one row, Tuesday in the row below it. Select both. Drag down on the little circle in the bottom right of the selection box. It will fill in the rest of the days.
A second way to do it would be using the DAYNAME formula. You will have to modify the formula depending on which row you start in but it is basically this:
    =DAYNAME(ROW()-1)
Change the "-1" to whatever value that makes ROW()+value = 2 (assuming you want to start with Monday)
EDIT: You did not specify if you only wanted monday through Friday. The methods above assume you want every day of the week.
In the first method, if you only want Monday-Friday, type all the days of the week in consecutive rows, select all five cells, copy them to the next five rows, select all ten cells, then drag down. For the other method the formula will be something like
    =DAYNAME(MOD(ROW()-1,5)+2)

  • LCD TV for MBP Question - PAL/NTSC ?

I want to buy an LCD TV (not plasma) to use with my MBP. If possible from the USA as the exchange rates are so good it would be a real bargain.
My question is: are US LCD TV's compatible with European TV signals ?
The US uses NTSC and we in UK use PAL. I know the old CRT TV's are not compatible unless they are multi system.
Could someone with an LCD TV in the USA check if they can input a PAL signal as well as NTSC ?
    Many thanks.....

    Syntrak,
My 2 cents, it might be difficult for you to find a seller that ship out of the US (specially for TV). I took the liberty to reply to your post because I spent 8 ear in the US until last september.
You are right about NTSC vs. PAL, it's going to be more difficult to find in the US a TV that is PAL than here in Europe to find a TV the accept NTSC.
I just check Amazon.com and they do not show NTSC/PAL compatibility (one TV shows ATSC, to receive HD signal from the air), look here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FA0DFM/ref=dpcp_ob_title0/102-3583852-2110522
Here is more info about ATSC signal: http://www.answers.com/topic/atsc (read the wikipedia article).
Also I'm afraid that no TV sold in the US will have a SCART input, I do not really know if UK use that input plug.
You are going to have hard time to find a TV that also work in 220V (US is 110Volt), not a lot of TV (contrary to DVD player) accept 110/220Volts.
Check Circuit city (www.circuitcity.com) Best Buy (www.bestbuy.com) for information as well as Amazon.com but none will ship out of the US (as far as I know).
Good luck and you have a lot of homework to do.

  • Upgrading from 15" MBP to 13" MBP (questions on Adobe CS/Microsoft)

    Hi there,
I have an existing MBP 15" running Snow Leopard that I use for work. I will be purchasing a new 13" from Apple which has Lion to replace my work computer. However, I will be keeping my 15" and would like to upgrade that to Lion (will purchase the Lion software). In addition, on my 15" I have Adobe CS4 and Microsoft Office 2008. I have purchaed the upgrade to Adobe CS5.5 and the new Office 2011 (finally with Outook) which I intend to use on both computers (this is all within the license agreements - installing on 2 computers used by the same user, but not running at the same time).
I basically want the 15" and 13" to mirror each other. I know I can do this with Migration Assistant, but I have questions on the way to prep the computers first before doing so (mainly my concern is tranferring Adobe CS programs versus installing them from the CDs and trasnferring from a Snow Leopard OS to a Lion OS). If anyone has any advice on the options I've listed below, I would really appreciate it. I also plan to post to the Adobe and Microsoft forums but thought I would start here first.
Option 1: Is it better to first upgrade EVERYTHING on the 15" and then use Migration Assistant to tranfser everything including apps to the 13"? This means on the 15", first upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion, then install the upgrade to Adobe CS5.5, install Office 2011 (transfer from Entourage email to Outlook) and then transfer everything to 13" new computer.
Option 2: Should I only upgrade the 15" OS to Lion and then transfer all the apps as is (Adobe CS4/Microsoft Office 2008) to the 13"? After the tranfsfer, then on both computers, I would install from the CDs the Adobe CS5.5 upgrade and Microsoft Office 2011.
Option 3: Should I just transfer everything as is (without upgrading first) from the 15" to the the 13"? This means after the transfer, on the 15" I would install Lion, then CS5.5 upgrade, then Office 2011 from CDs. Then on the 13", I would install from the CDs Adobe CS4, then CS5.5 upgrade, then Office 2011 (I don't really need 2008 on the 13" as this will be my work computer that I need Outlook for).
I'm also wondering in general regarding Entourage to Outlook if is better to do that transfer of email on my Snow Leopard computer first or Lion or does it really matter?
    Thanks so much in advance!

    Mid 2009 to 2011...
Will be a good test whether I/O trumps pure processing. Now, if the OP lucks out and gets the 13" when this year's iteration comes out (Ivy Bridge), then I'll raise the white flag and accept "upgrade".

  • Buying MBP questions

Is it a good time to buy the MBP now that it has been updated a week ago?
Is Apple giving discounts on black friday? If so, can I still get student discount?

Built right into OS X Lion, Lion Recovery lets you repair disks or reinstall OS X Lion without the need for a physical disc.
The Lion Recovery Disk Assistant lets you create Lion Recovery on an external drive that has all of the same capabilities as the built-in Lion Recovery: reinstall Lion, repair the disk using Disk Utility, restore from a Time Machine backup, or browse the web with Safari.
Note: In order to create an external Lion Recovery using the Lion Recovery Assistant, the Mac must have an existing Recovery HD.
To create an external Lion Recovery, download the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant application. Insert an external drive, launch the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant,  select the drive where you would like to install, and follow the on screen instructions.
When the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant completes, the new partition will not be visible in the Finder or Disk Utility. To access Lion Recovery, reboot the computer while holding the Option key. Select Recovery HD from the Startup Manager.

  • My, new "2" 21 week MBP's

so the time had finally come,
both machines worked perfectly expect one of them had a kernel panic problem that I solved (had power mangment issues).
not that I know what a whine sounds like but I dont seem to have "a whine", I expected heat, and I got heat, but I found that even though it does get warmer than warm its okay, when its on battery its suprisingly cool (lowest screen brightness)
installed boot camp, and its running flawlessly, going to install boot camp and windows on the 2nd one to see if any generic errors get thru. but so far I still didnt go through testing it alot, will try to connect it thru my bluetooth gps to see how it might work.
but seriously bieng a switcher from PC, this thing is amazing.
if anybody has any questions ill be glad to answer, (both are week 21's)

if anybody has any questions ill be glad to answer,

  • BootCamp on Late 2011 MBP Question.

I don't know where to start but here goes. I've had boot camp w/ Win7 32bit on my MBP for sometime now with the original HD. I upgraded to a SSD, and removed the optical drive and put the original HDD there.  recently decided to upgrade the original HDD to 1TB and CarbonCopy Cloner does not support cloning Boot Camp partitions. So heres what I did to get BC back on my MBP. I cloned my SSD to the new HDD. Removed the SSD and reinstalled the optical drive so I can use BC to partition and install Win7 on the new 1TB HD. The reason why I did that was because my MBP does not support booting from external USB CD-ROM. Now after I got Win7 up and running I removed the optical drive, moved the 1TB HDD back over and reinstalled my SSD as the main boot disk.
Now here comes my real question. Can I wipe the OS X Partition on the 1TB disk or will it cause problems with BootCamp ?
    Thanks in advance

  • Refurb MBP questions

Hey all! I just got a "new" MBP and I have to say that so far, I love it! I just had a couple quick questions because I am comparing the MBP running Leopard to my old PBG4 running TIGER:
When the display sleeps, the LED near the open latch is on but very dim. When the MBP goes to sleep, then the LED pulses. I know the pulsing is normal, but is the dim LED thing ok?
Also, the problem with the first letter input being ignored, but I see Apple is working on it.
Because it's a refurb, I think I am a bit lucky: I ordered a 160gig HD and got a 200gig HD—but only 4200rpm. Has anyone had any issues with the 4200rpm drive? I was a bit disappointed in the information about the speed but have noticed no significant performance lag. I am thankful for the extra room, of course...
Has anyone else ordered a refurb and get extra "goodies" in their hardware??
    Thanks for your time.

I recently purchased a new refurb. 2.2 GHz 15", running Tiger. I bought it off eBay for a further discounted price, yet it included the drop-in Leopard DVD. I haven't installed Leopard yet, for I'm afraid of running into issues with it. Maybe when 10.5.2 is released.
Regarding the LED on the latch, I have had the same experience. A little alarming at first, but I assume its just a MacBook Pro thing. I also upgraded from a Powerbook.
Other than that issue, I've noticed the trackpad is a little crazy when the computer is cold and sometimes it wakes from sleep a little sluggishly. This only happens when I close the screen, then open it again within a few seconds. Oh, and I have 2 dead "red" pixels. I intend to call Apple about this in the near future.
Regarding your hard drive, I'm not surprised you are having a positive experience. I have read that the new 4200RPM drives can be "just as fast" at 5400RPM drives.

  • Migrating data from macbook to MBP questions

i just got a new macbook pro 2.5ghz yesterday. i have been using a macbook late 2008 aluminum.  i want to migrate about 225 GB of data from old computer to new computer.  What is the fastest way of the available options?  I know that wireless is out of the question. i have an ethernet cable and was thinking of using that to connect the two computers. Would it be faster to go from the the MacBook USB to the MBP firewire?  Would i use a USB to firewire cable, or a firewire cable with a USB adapter?  Any rough idea of how long any of these connections might take for that amount of data?  The new computer has a 1 terrabyte hard drive 5400rpm.  thanks

The link explains how to migrate data using Mavericks.  The Macbook Pro i got is not the retina display model, it's the previous model, which i chose to get so i could get the large hard drive, needing the space.  The new MBP came with Mountain Lion, doesn't have Mavericks on it yet.  It has a firewire port and a thunderbolt port and two USB ports.  The old computer, the MacBook, has only USB ports, no firewire. I'm moving the data from the old computer to the new computer.  Since the data is going to the new Mac, i thought would be the Target Disk, right? So, i will put the old Mac "in Target Disk," is that right?   That means it's going to target another disk, is that right? It's confusing temrinology, but i bet it's perfectly clear when you are doing it and following the process.
So firewire is the fastest choice and in order  to use it with these two computers, i need to use a USB to Firewire cable to connect the old computer to the new computer, if i understand right.
Do you know if there's any source of information how long (roughly) it might take to migrate about 225GB usintg USB to FireWire?  I want to plan for a time when i won't be able to use either computer.
    thanks!

  • 13 weeks MBP 13"  Battery 85% ??

Hello people, i recently bought a brand new mid 2010 mbpro 13"
im worried about my battery health

    Hello!
My MBP 13" battery also have the same problem. After the recent sudden shutdown, the technical support told me to calibrate my battery.
While it was charging with the adaptor, my Full Charge Capacity was 5002.
and now that i have charged fully + at least 2 Hours, it became:
    Charge Information:

  • ICal "week view" question

Is it possible to advance one day at a time in the "week" view mode in iCal? I can only advance one week at a time.
I have my week starting day set to "Monday," but I sometimes want to be able to see events over a long weekend (from, say, Friday to Monday) or another period of time that doesn't begin on Monday and end on Sunday. In those cases, I have to either go to "month" view or reset my week start day in the preferences. Palm Desktop allows me to advance one day at a time while in week view, a feature I didn't know I was giving up when I converted to iCal.

  • Would like to buy TC to replace AE for iMac and MBP; questions

    hi all--
currently i have a dual-band airport extreme on bridge mode connected by ethernet to my AT&T Uverse wireless router. we have several Airport Express' and an ATV2 in the house and the 2 wireless connections; the g put out by Uverse, and an n put out by the AE. I switch to either one depending on location. I have a WD 1TB drive hooked up to my 750GB iMac via FW800. for years that was fine as the iMac was the main computer and i just worried about it's backups.
now we have upgraded a 2007 MacBook to a new MBPro w/ a 500GB SSD, 12 GB RAM, and an i7 chip. needless to say, now THIS computer has become pimary, as it blazes!! but now since there's so much info on it, it really needs to be backed up as well.
i'm OK with basic/moderate connectivity, but sometimes get confused by more complex issues. so let me throw my wants at you. i'm hoping that i can buy the 3TB TC to replace the AE and WD drive, split the TC drive into 2 partitions, and keep the iMac hooked up to it via ethernet, and let the MBPro back up wirelessly to it's own partition.
i guess this might be pretty basic and obvious, but before i buy all this and sell my old equipment, i'd like to make sure it should work. i've never set up a TC before, but i hope that i can just tell it to use the prior settings for the AE to get most setup issues out of the way. and i'm not quite sure how (or when in the process) to partition the TC drive, assuming i can.
if someone can advise me whether this setup is possible, and how to (or a link on how to) partition to TC drive for the 2 computers that would be fantastic. the main reason i'm unsure about doing this is that on Apple's TC page, they really only seem to discuss all computers backing up wirelessly, which would be silly for the iMac since they're side-by-side.
any thoughts for me, my faithful bretheren?

You cannot partition the TC drive but the two computers can use TM to their own areas without any need for you to intrude.. That part Apple do a good job of. The backup sparse bundle is effectively a disk image and the computer keeps track of it by virtual of serial numbers.. you will have no issues.
And the iMac can use ethernet which will be much faster.. you should do both backups initially by ethernet.. once completed the MBP can backup via wireless.. but the speed of wireless will make a mockery of your SSD.. wow, 500GB SSD.. !!
The TC should be relatively easy to slot into place of the AE.. it is really the same thing.. but I sure would NOT sell it all off until you get everything working.. and I would still keep the firewire drive just as a further backup.. there is nothing wrong with using a different software and then leaving the FW drive in a friend or relatives house for a rainy day.
