Weird behaviour in report filter with Presentation variables

Hi All,
I'm facing a weird behaviour on filtering the report using presentation variables
Prompt:
1. Start Date assigned to PV_ST_DT
2. End Date assigned to PV_END_DT
Report
In the filter section given the "between" condition with these two presentation variable
Fiscal Date between {@PV_ST_DT}{01/01/1990} AND {@PV_END_DT}{01/01/1990}
this given filter condition results in the report like
Fiscal Date is equal to ({@PV_END_DT} value)
the filter criteria is not applied as I given, I have tried by changing the conditions like greater than or equal to , less than or equal to. The filter applied only the last presentation variable value with the prompt condition, It is not taking the condition specified in the report.
Can anyone provide a solution on this?

Below format: works perfectly fine
Fiscal Date BETWEEN '@{PV_ST_DT}{01/01/2007}' AND '@{PV_END_DT}{01/03/2007}'

  • Set filter (with presentation variables) for requests using "SQL Issued"

if I have a "SQL issued":
    SELECT saw_0 saw_0, saw_1 saw_1, saw_2 saw_2, saw_3 saw_3, saw_4 saw_4 FROM (

    ) t2 ORDER BY saw_0
actually, in this request, I would like to set a filter for "Period"."YearMonth" using presentation variable.
is it possible to do this ?
    Thanks !!

    Hi Forreging,
You can use presentation variables, but not if you are directly setting the SQL via the Advanced tab.
Instead, build up the first report just like the first part of the UNION statement. Then use the "Combine with Similar request" to build up the logic for the second part of the query.
When you approach it this way, you have the ability to set filters on each "Sub-Request" via the Criteria tab. Otherwise, OBIEE only lets you add a filter at the outer level of the query when you go the route of setting the SQL in the Advanced tab.
Good luck and if you find this post useful, please award points!
    Best regards,

  • Filtering with presentation variable in my report

    Hi experts,
I'm using Essbase with Obiee 11g.
I have entity dimension like this:
    Gen1, Entity
    Gen2, Entity
    Gen3, Entity...
    Each Gen is a hierarchy.
I have a prompt in my dashboard that is a number: 1, 2, 3... with presentation variable = num
When prompt was number 3 I need to filter with Gen2, Entity.. if is number 2 with gen1, entity.. Always -1
In my report I can general filter like this: Gen@{num}, Entity and I see report OK, My requeriment is @{num}*-1* like: Gen@{num}, Entity but I have an error...
    Can I do this??
    Thanks!!!

You need to get the number using substring, substract it and then concat to the string "Entity"."Gen
There is another way for the same, Based on the value from prompt can validate the column to show in the report.
    Try this scenario:
    I've a prompt Time.Week
in the report I've picked two columns,
    Column1: Time.Week--> set to isprompt
    Column2: with exp
    CASE WHEN Time.Week = '2012 Week01' THEN Time."Month Name" ELSE Time."Month" END
I've used existing columns to mimic your scenario

  • Issue with presentation variables, dashboard prompt and filter

    Dear Guru's,
I have a question about constraining a request with presentation variable set by a dashboard prompt. I have a dashboard prompt, that stores its value in a presentation variable . The prompt is about region. When the dashboard opens, the default of the prompt is all choices and it needs to show my reports with "All Choices". I've created the following filter on my two reports on the dashboard:
    "Dim Student"."Region" = '@{variables.GILLES}'
    or '@{variables.GILLES}' IS NULL
One report is just the column "Dim Student"."Region" (to see if it works) and with this report the above filter works just fine. When nothing is prompted it shows "All Choices" when a choice is made the report responds accordingly.
    BUT
The second report on my dash with the same region column, but extended with some time dimension columns and a measure gives an error which I'm not able to solve.
+State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. While the exact same report but without the "or '@{variables.GILLES}' IS NULL" doesn't throw any errors but doesn't show the "all choices" by default.
The ultimate goal to achieve is to build a dashboard with several reports from several subject areas with one single prompt that opens default with "all choices" and constrains the reports accordingly.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Gilles

    Phani,
I know "All Choices" is a special value and that it doesn't represent NULL. My filter construction seems to work fine.
    My filter condition:
    "Dim Student"."Region" = '@{variables.GILLES}'
    or '@{variables.GILLES}' IS NULL
When it's set by the prompt it filters the request accordingly (first condition evaluates to true), when it's not set the second condition evaluates to true and shows all the results (or it's not filtered).
The problem is that it doesn't work when time dimensions are combined with this filter. Then it throws the error mentioned in the first post.
By the way: your suggested solution doesn't work.

  • How to get a "char variable" with presentation variable???

I want to pass a char variable with presentation variable, I don't have problems if I pass "int".
For example in answers page I add a column that contains years of my dimension. 2000 until 2012 and prompted my presentation variable "year" (from my dashboard prompt) and when I go to dashboard if I choose in my prompt 2006 in my report appear 2006...any problem and easy. But my problem is if I would pass a char variable, in my prompt also I have months but not numbers else names: January, February, March...and a presentation variable that name is "month". If I do the same report but change column year to month (name) I don't have any results and I have an error.
    How can I solucionate this???
    Thank you!!

    Alex,
Do you have separate columns for Year and Month Name. If Yes, Then why it is so confusing?
    1. create a dashboard prompt with month name column
    2. Assign it to monthname variable
    3. In your report use above variable any where.., but what ever you are doing should be logical and valid to get some data.
In general above approach will work.
You said, "No! I don't want to do a filter with month! I would like to pass this variable, in this example don't make sense but I need to pass a char variable with presentation variable to do another things..."
what does that mean, what you are trying to do with the variable in your report. If you give a example that would be better.

  • Issue with SQL Query with Presentation Variable as Data Source in BI Publisher

    Hello All
I have an issue with creating BIP report based on OBIEE reports which is done using direct SQL. There is this one report in OBIEE dashboard, which is written using direct SQL. To create the pixel perfect version of this report, I am creating BIP data model using SQL Query as data source. The physical query that is used to create OBIEE report has several presentation variables in its where clause.
    select TILE4,max(APPTS), 'Top Count' from
    SELECT c5 as division,nvl(DECODE (C2,0,0,(c1/c2)*100),0) AS APPTS,NTILE (4) OVER ( ORDER BY nvl(DECODE (C2,0,0,(c1/c2)*100),0))  AS TILE4,

    and (T6172.CALENDARMONTHNUMBERINYEAR between substr('@{Month_Start}',0,6)  and substr('@{Month_END}',8,13))
and (T6736.TYPE in ('Call Center', 'LSM')) )
    group by T802.DEPT_CODE, T802.NAME_LEVEL_6, T802.NAME_LEVEL_1, T6172.CALENDARMONTHNAMEANDYEAR, T6172.CALENDARMONTHNUMBERINYEAR

When I try to view data after creating the data set, I get the following error:
    Failed to load XML
XML Parsing Error: mismatched tag. Expected: . Location: http://172.20.17.142:9704/xmlpserver/servlet/xdo Line Number 2, Column 580:
Now when I remove those Presention variables (@{PV1}, @{PV2}) in the query with some hard coded values, it is working fine.
So I know it is the PV that's causing this error.
How can I work around it?
There is no way to create equivalent report without using the direct sql..
    Thanks in advance

I have found a solution to this problem after some more investigation. PowerQuery does not support to use SQL statement as source for Teradata (possibly same for other sources as well). This is "by design" according to Microsoft. Hence the problem
is not because different PowerQuery versions as mentioned above. When designing the query in PowerQuery in Excel make sure to use the interface/navigation to create the query/select tables and NOT a SQL statement. The SQL statement as source works fine on
a client machine but not when scheduling it in Power BI in the cloud. I would like to see that the functionality within PowerQuery and Excel should be the same as in Power BI in the cloud. And at least when there is a difference it would be nice with documentation
    or more descriptive errors.

  • Report Performance with Bind Variable

Getting some very odd behaviour with a report in APEX v 3.2.1.00.10
I have a complex query that takes 5 seconds to return via TOAD, but takes from 5 to 10 minutes in an APEX report.
I've narrowed it down to one particular bind. If I hard code the date in it returns in 6 seconds, but if I let the date be passed in from a parameter it takes 5+ minutes again.
Relevant part of the query (an inline view) is:
    ,(select rglr_lect lect
    ,sum(tpm) mtr_tpm
    ,sum(enrols) mtr_enrols
    from ops_dash_meetings_report
    where meet_ev_date between to_date(:P35_END_DATE,'DD/MM/YYYY') - 363 and to_date(:P35_END_DATE,'DD/MM/YYYY')
    group by rglr_lect) RPV
I've tried replacing the "to_date(:P35_END_DATE,'DD/MM/YYYY') - 363" with another item which is populated with the date required (and verified by checking session state). If I replace the :P35_END_DATE with an actual date the performance is fine again.
The weird thing is that a trace file shows me exactly the same Explain Plan as the TOAD Explain where it runs in 5 seconds.
Another odd thing is that another page in my application has the same inline view and doesn't hit the performance problem.
The trace file did show some control characters (circumflex M) after each line of this report's query where these weren't anywhere else on the trace queries. I wondered if there was some sort of corruption in the source?
No problems due to pagination as the result set is only 31 records and all being displayed.
Really stumped here. Any advice or pointers would be most welcome.
    Jon.

Don't worry about the Time column, the cost and cardinality are more important to see whther the CBO is making different decisions for whatever reason.
Remember that the explain plan shows the expected execution plan and a trace shows the actual execution plan. So what you want to do is compare the query with bind variables from an APEX page trace to a trace from TOAD (or sqlplus or whatever). You can do this outside APEX like this...
    ALTER SESSION SET EVENTS '10046 trace name context forever, level 1';Enter and run your SQL statement...;
ALTER SESSION SET sql_trace=FALSE;This will create a a trace file in the directory returned by...
SELECT value FROM v$parameter WHERE name = 'user_dump_dest' Which you can use tkprof to format.
I am assuming that your not going over DB links or anything else slightly unusual?
    Cheers
    Ben

  • SLOW report performance with bind variable

    Environment: 11.1.0.7.2, Apex 4.01.
I've got a simplified report page where the report runs slowly compared to running the same query in sqldeveloper. The report region is based on a pl/sql function returning a query. If I use a bind variable in the query inside apex it takes 13 seconds to run, and if I hard code a string it takes only a few hundredths of a second. The query returns one row from a table which has 1.6 million rows. Statistics are up-to-date and the columns in the joins and where clause are indexed.
I've run traces using p_trace=YES from Apex for both the bind variable and hard coded strings. They are below.
The sqldeveloper explain plan is identical to the bind variable plan from the trace, yet the query runs in 0.0x seconds in sqldeveloper.
What is it about bind variable syntax in Apex that is causing the bad execution plan? Apex Bug? 11g bug? Ideas?
tkprof output from Apex trace with bind variable is below...

    Patrick, interesting insight. Thank you.
The optimizer must be peeking at my bind variables with it's eyes closed. I'm the only one testing and I've never passed %anything as a bind value. :)
Here's what I've learned since my last post:
I don't think that sqldeveloper is actually using the explain plan it says it is. When I run explain plan in sqldeveloper (with a bind variable) it shows me the exact same plan as Apex with a bind variable. However, when I run autotrace in sqldeveloper, it takes a path that matches the hard coded values, and returns results in half a second. That autotrace run is consistent with actually running the query outside of autotrace. So, I think either sqldeveloper isn't really using bind variables, OR it is using them in some other way that Apex does not, or maybe optimizer peeking works in sqldeveloper?
Using optimizer hints to tweak the plan helps. I've tried both /*+ FIRST_ROWS */ and /*+ index(ps pk_persons) */ and both drop the query to about a second. However, I'm loath to use hints because of the very dynamic nature of the query (and Tom Kyte doesn't like them either). The hints may end up hurting other variations on the query.
I also tested the query by wrapping it in a select count(1) from ([long query]) and testing the performance in sqldeveloper and in Apex. The performance in that case is identical with both bind variables and hard coded variables for both Apex and SqlDeveloper. That to me was very interesting and I went so far as to set up two bind variable report regions on the same page. One region wrapped the long query with select count(1) from (...) and the other didn't. The wrapped query ran in 0.01 seconds, the unwrapped took 15ish seconds with no other optimizations. Very strange.
To get performance up to acceptable levels I have changed my function returning query to:
    1) Set the equality operator to "=" for values without wildcards and "like" for user input with wildcards. This makes a HUGE difference IF no wildcard is used.
    2) Insert a /*+ FIRST_ROWS */ hint when users chose the column that requires the sub-query. This obviously changes the optimizer's plan and improves query speed from 15 seconds to 1.5 seconds even with wildcards.
I will NOT be hard coding any user supplied values in the query string. As you can probably tell by the query, this is an application where sql injection would be very bad.
Jeff, regarding your question about "like '%' || :P71_SEARCH_SOURCE1 || '%'". I've found that putting wildcards around values, particularly at the beginning will negate any indexing on the column in question and slows performance even more.
I'm still left wondering if there isn't something in Apex that is breaking the optimizer "peeking" that Patrick describes. Perhaps something in the way it switches contexts from apex_public_user to the workspace schema?

  • OBIEE 11g Front End Calculations with Presentation Variables Error

    Hi Guru's,
Long time user first time poster to the forums but hopefully you can help.
I have a requirement to perform an aggregation on certain fields with a dynamic grouping requirement (so users can select which grouping they require ie, sum profit by [outlets or companies or region]).
The approach I am using is a prompt setting a presentation variable with the possible groupings for the calculation as choices, and a column in the report with a formula to SUM("table"."column" by "@{variable}{default}") this also contains a dynamic column name containing the presentation variable too.
Where the column could be profit and the variable prompt options could be outlet, company or region (from the above example).
This is currently separate from the RPD due to the dynamic nature required with groupings changing at run time and is done in the front end.
However on selecting some columns via the prompt I receive this error:
    Error Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC:OI2DL65P
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 43113] Message returned from OBIS. [nQSError: 22027] Union of non-compatible types. (HY000)
This only occurs on some field groupings, and is not a certain type in particular. (Including both short date, short time and varchars).
Any ideas where this problem could stem from?

Based on given info: Try this
    SUM(cast("table"."column" as int) by "@{variable}{default}")

  • Weird behaviour in OpenGL compositing with r300g

    Hello,
I have a weird issue on my laptop with both KDE 4.6.5 and 4.7RC2. When switching on desktop effects with Alt-shift-F12, the screen turns gray, with a darker gray for the panel. I can also see the decorations ok, but that's all. The weirdest thing is that Kwin doesnt complain about anything, and everything comes back to normal when I switch off desktop effects.
The only warning message i get is from dmesg: "composite sync not supported". I didnt find any similar description on forums or bug reports. The issue happens with Arch's KDE 4.6.5 to 4.7RC2 and Chakra 4.6.4 to 4.7RC2. It doesnt happen with Kubuntu 's KDE 4.6.2 (didnt try with later versions but its unlikely minor versions would change smthg right?)
graphic chipset is ATI Radeon Xpress200M (driver radeon r300g)
    glxinfo reports :
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4  on ATI RS482
       OpenGL 2.1 Mesa 7.10.3 (same happens with 7.11 rc1)
    Other info:
The issue doesnt happen with Xrender backend
The issue still happens with any arrangement of options in the desktop effect advanced configuration (with/without Vsync, w/wo direct rendering...)
No (WW) neither (EE) in Xorg log, all extensions load fine (Composite, Dri, Dri2, glx ...)
    kms enabled
Arch linux installed on usb disk, working perfectly fine when running on another workstation with intel graphics.
Doesn anyone have a clue what is going on? Is there something I am missing here?

    Below format: works perfectly fine
Fiscal Date BETWEEN '@{PV_ST_DT}{01/01/2007}' AND '@{PV_END_DT}{01/03/2007}'

  • Check Interactive report filter with APEX item :P101_USERNAME

    Hi,
is there a way to create a filter with IR which is based on the :P101_USERNAME item?
I use this variable with the windows user name and want to show only rows where the current user works with.
    Thanks ahead,
    Tobias

    Hi John,
my plan was to reference the filter on the user level.
Parts of selection for the IR:
    SELECT r.r_id,
    c.c_name,
    r.r_note,
    UPPER(r.win_account)
    FROM requests r, classes c
    WHERE r.r_c_id = c.c_id
    Info:
    WIN_ACCOUNT looks like: ARNHOLD_TOBIAS
    :P101_USERNAME looks like: ARNHOLD_TOBIAS
The goal is that a user in the standard view sees only his rows/calls and if he want to see the rows/calls from the colleagues too. He/She would only need to take off the filter for the USERNAME.
I could use my own items with an extra region too but I thought that there was an easier way then that.

  • Report -- filter with selection list -- show all values after select page

    Hello!
    I have the following problem:
    - I have a report
    - this report can be filtered with a selection-list
    - the selection list is based on dynamic LOV and has a null-value
    - I added the code of the report the following, to filter the report after choosing a value of the selection list:
    ... and (instr(type, decode(:P8_FILTER_type, '%null%',type,:P8_FILTER_type)) > 0)
    This works very well.
But my problem is: When the user logs out and the next time, he logs in, the selection list shows " --- show all values --- " (my null-display-value) and the report is empty "no values found".
---> I want to show the first time, the page is selected ALL the values of the report. (this is now only possile if I press the button which belongs to the selection list)
I hope, somebody understands my problem.
    Thank you so much,
    LISA

    Hello Lisa,
The first time it's probably NULL.
So what you can do in your where: (instr(type, decode(NVL(:P8_FILTER_type,'%null%'), '%null%',type,:P8_FILTER_type)) > 0)
Off topic: I also wonder if that where clause can't be simpler? Do you rely need the instr?

  • Report Query with Bind variables working very slowly

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a hard time with one of my Reports.
Basically the query looks like this:
    Select *
    from x,y,z
    where x.lang_id = :P1_LANG
    and y.name = :P1_LANG;
I have a textfield and a Select List on my Page which have to have a value before the report is shown.
Now to the problem, when I input a value into these Application Items the Report takes ages (3-5 min). But when I replace the Bind variables (:P1_LANG and :P1_LANG) with the actual values it takes mere seconds.
Anyone got an idea why this might be?
I'm at my wits end -.-

    Hi
This could be for a number of reasons and unfortunately there is no quick answer...
When you run a query for the first time, the execution plan is worked out by the Cost Based Optimiser (I'm assuming you're using 10g or above here). This is referred to as a hard parse. Next time the same SQL text is used then the execution plan may still be in the shared pool - in this case the same execution plan is used rather than being calculated again.
The great thing about using bind variables is that even with different inputs, the SQL text is the same so the execution plan can be shared for different inputs. One downside is that if the first time the query is executed using bind variables, out of the ordinary values are input, bind variable peeking can lead to a sub optimal execution plan being calculated for the query and then shared in other situations (where more 'normal' values are input).
However, it could be down to a host of other things too. So your first check is to make sure that you have executed both queries a number of times. If you are still getting the same performance issues then plan post the full query, table creation scripts and execution plan for both querys.
    Cheers
    Ben

  • Report query with bind variable

Trying to create a report query for xsl-fo print. For output format I pick "derive from item" then pick the item name from the list, on the next screen, I paste the query with the bind variable. on the next step test query, I always get "data not found" regardless what value I type in. This is the same query that I ran under sql commands without any issues.
Does anyone run into the same issue as I have when attempted to create a query with bind var ? There is no problem creating a query without bind varibles. . thanks.
    Munshar

Hi, please did you get any solution to this issue? I am having similar challenge right now.
    select     EMP.DEPTNO as DEPTNO,
         DEPT.DNAME as DNAME,
         EMP.EMPNO as EMPNO,
         EMP.ENAME as ENAME,
         EMP.JOB as JOB,
         EMP.MGR as MGR,
         EMP.HIREDATE as HIREDATE,
         EMP.SAL as SAL
    from     SCOTT.DEPT DEPT,
         SCOTT.EMP EMP
    where EMP.DEPTNO=DEPT.DEPTNO
    and      DEPT.DNAME =upper(:dname)
This run perfectly in sql developer, toad, and even inside publisher if I login directly to publisher to create report.
Generating this same query in shared component query builder and testing it returns no data found. If I remove the last line, it works. but with the last line, it return no data found. It seems no one has been able to provide solution to this issue

  • LOV table column filter with bind variable

    Greetings everyone,
I am using JDev version: 11.1.2.3.0
I have a table which has all it's columns with filterable property set to 'true'. I have already created a filter for the first one which displays the total list of users registered in the system. But the second one is a bit more complex.
I want to display a LOV which takes it's values from a VO with a bind variable. In a normal situation there is a another VO which links one of it's properties to this bind var in the View Accessor section of the LOV configuration dialog just like this:
    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OSq71i5oy0c/SUa6qdnkkoI/AAAAAAAABnY/QnBPmGFgLI4/s400/3.PNG
But i want to be able to display this LOV in a column filter, the code i used is this:
    <f:facet name="filter">
                             <af:selectOneChoice value="#{vs.filterCriteria.Debtor}"
                                    label="Debtor" unselectedLabel=""
                                     id="soc104">
                                                                            <af:forEach items="#{bindings.ContractPartiesView1.rangeSet}"
                                                                                        var="debtors">
                                                                                <f:selectItem id="si104"
                                                                                              itemLabel="#{debtors.Name}"
                                                                                              itemValue="#{debtors.PartyNumber}"/>
                                                                            </af:forEach>
                                                                        </af:selectOneChoice>
                                                                    </f:facet>
Where Name is the name of the items to display, and PartyNumber is the value by which the table property (column) Debtor is connected to ContractPartiesView1 (the DC of the first VO).
It doesn't display nothing, and i suppose this is due the fact that ContractPartiesView1 has that bind variable which stays uninitialized.
I need to find a way to initialize this bind variable to get the filtered values for the LOV. I've tried to use a listOfValue binding insted of a tree, but with no result. Am i missing something?
    Thanks in advance

I had resolved this, the very next day, but i didn't have chance to reply.
I've simply created another VO, which didn't have a bind variable to get that ID, it was simply linked with a master detail relationship with the one it should get the ID from (via FK). I've created this other VO because the first one was already in use for some other requirement.
