Weird colour distortion in OS X Mavericks

Hello
I got some weird looking colour distortion going on in my recent installation of Mac OS X Mavericks on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro. Any suggestions on fixing this? Is this a known problem? I only have it on some places in some occasions...
Here's a screenshot:
It's not my screen since I can take a screenshot of it...

Same problem - macbook pro mid 2010, 15 inch. I ran the AHT test, it showed nothing so I took it to the store I bought it at. It passed all diagnostics and they could not reproduce the problem (?!). Apple has refused to fix it as it is not currently viewed as a hardware problem. I brought the laptop home and within hours I have distortion on the top of the desktop and a thick black outline around the open window. I think this may be a software issue, within Mavericks, not related to the GPU/logic board/nvid/motherboard issues I've seen referred to in similar posts (I hope so, those hardware fixes all seem to be bunk). See link below.

  • Fade to Black: Getting a weird colour distortion.

    Question for the gurus:
I'm on CS3 at the moment and working on some projects involving space scenes (stars and stuff).
I have a black rectangle as my bottom-most layer and change the fill to a simple black and white radial gradient effect and the black becomes kind of faded, or pale.  I'm losing my mind trying to eliminate the problem and what's worse is that I've fixed the problem during a previous project, but can't for the life of me remember what I did.
Any ideas what's causing this and how to avoid it in the future?
Much appreciation for taking the time to read this!

The problem is solved.  I don't know what caused it in the first place.  However, when I change the colour from the faded black to another (i.e. red) and then back to black the colour is just fine.
    Weird.
Thanks for looking in and trying to help!

  • My iPad 2 screen has turned a weird colour. The background is black and the letters are white instead of the other way round and colour photos look like negatives. How do I change it back.

My IPad screen has turned a weird colour, the background is white and the letters white instead of the other way round.  Colour photos look like negatives. How can I turn it back to a white background.

    Dear Steve,
You are wonderful! You are the best! I'm Stephania and I recently purchased a refurbished ipad2. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and updating & fixing it so my liking. The only thing that I couldn't correct were the photos that looked like negatives. Every photo, even on the internet, on apps, everywhere! I just couldn't figure out how to fix it. I contacted Apple Care and its too difficult to get in touch with them. I had looked through support before but didn't put in the right question. Well, today I got lucky. I did the two things you suggested and turning the "White On Black" off did the trick. I'm so happy! I had a feeling it was something simple and this is not even in the manual!

  • Mac pro keeps crashing/weird colours/unable to reset/wont boot

Hello. First some info. I have had my mac pro for 18 months. I am running OP system X 10.5.8. I have four 256mb ramss instaled(from purchase) and 250G hardrive.
Now for 17 months, everything has run fine. Until one day after switching accounts, I noticed weird red lines accross the screen and I could not click on anything. I had to use the power button to reboot and then everything went fine until the next morning, after logging in, I got the red/pink lines accross the screen again and I was unable to click on anything.
This problem went on for about a week but then things got worst. I was having to use the power button upto 4 times because when i tried to boot, it was stuck on a blue screen. This then became 6 times after a short while more.
Before long, i was at the stage where i would click on my account to log in and the screen would just freaze. After several reboots, i was able to get onto the account but the computer then began crashing(with the spinning colour wheel in the middle of the screen) and i could click on nothing.
I was thinking that my computer needed warming up or something but today, it has gone one step too far. Ive spent about an hour trying to get it on but everytime i click itunes/safari etc, i just get a frozen screen, often with weird colours. My computer is making horrible noises(like its downloading a song, if you get me) that do not go away.
Now, ive done a hardware test and an extended hardware test but nothing came up. I attempted to re-install the operating system but that ended up crashing just like my computer does.
For some reason however, i have booted in safe mode and there is not a single problem with anything. I can click on itunes etc etc and nothing crashes.
I have apple care, what do you think i should do now? Could it still be a hardware problem? How do i find out if it is a software error?
    Any help would be fantastic

milesmartin, did you ever resolve this issue?
I find myself in almost the same situation. I have a Mac Pro using OS 10.6.1 with 9gb RAM and three hard drives. This happened suddenly at a cold startup for me. The strange red/pink lines, mouse not responding, etc. I could do a hard restart (power off) and the problem seemed to go away. I have tried many tests with TechTool Pro and the Apple hardware disk. All test show no problems with hardware. I have installed clean systems on a new hard drive several times including going back to OS 10.5. Each cold restart brings the same freeze, strange graphic displays. I reset the SMU, purged the PRAM, replace the battery, pulled/replaced all RAM modules, tried starting from the OS install disk. So far, nothing helps.
At the start of this problem, I could do a boot in safe mode. Now, nothing works and it may take 4 or 5 restarts to get the system up and running. This is most unacceptable and probably stresses the components in ways that will eventually cause a failure.
I am out of ideas today and it is no longer fun. Any help?

  • Colour distortion when running Keynote through data projector

I regularly hook my MacBook up to a data projector, using (I think) a DVI to VGA connector, without any problems; have recently found some problems with colour distortion, though, to the point of everything on the data projector display appearing in shades of blue. Running the attached PC through the data projector, everything was absolutely fine, so it seems to be a problem with my MacBook display settings? Any suggestions for a quick fix?
    Thanks!

When you bring up the monitors control panel, does it show on BOTH screens (internal and projector)? It should, and if you're not mirroring, ONLY change it on the projector. Make sure it matches the default for the projector. There no reason it shouldn't work, but that's the first place to check.

  • Screen distortion after upgrading to mavericks os

I own a late 2011 MBP 13". Last week I upgraded to Mavericks and regret it ever since. Firstly, it's become unbelievably slow. Secondly, and most importantly my screen resolution is now distorted and completely messed up. Immediately I suspected if Mavericks had screwed some setting. So I looked up Google for screen distortion after upgrading to Mavericks. The results were surprising! There are many apple discussions going on about the same thing. After reading most of them, as suggested in almost all threads, I took my laptop to the service station. The initial response given to me was that they suspected a hardware issue. All threads had indicated what to expect so I was not surprised. I explained to them clearly that there are discussions revolving around this topic and many users have been affected because of this. I even showed / shared the links of the various discussions on this topic. The service station in India asked for more time to investigate further. In the mean time I contacted the Indian call centre to report this problem. The service station reverted after their investigation that my logic board was corrupted and needed replacement. Phew!!! The cost of replacement is as good as buying a new MBP. It's really amusing because my MBP is less that 2 years old and unfortunately I do not have extended warranty.
Has anyone facing the same issue been able to convince apple that this is a mavericks issue? Does even apple recognize this as an issue in the first place? Does apple expect people to blindly invest in hardware just because they have released a new OS?
    These and many more questions....
    Expecting answers!!!
Not a good start to 2014

The startup disk may need repairing ...
Restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.

  • Correcting non-linear colour distortions

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to automatically correct non-linear colour distortions using the standard Photoshop tools (preferably CS2 or earlier)?
The standard grey-point in the "levels" dialog box only works with uniform casts, such as you'd get if you took a photo with a coloured filter over the lens. This doesn't work if the distortion is non-linear (e.g. shadows are bluish and highlights neutral or yellowish).
What I'd *like* to be able to do is select an object I know to be grey in real life- such as a statue- with as wide a range of tones/brightness levels as possible, and have it automatically alter the curves for the whole image such that this statue's highlights, midpoints and shadows are all roughly grey.
Using "Match Color" doesn't work here becaue it alters saturation  levels to match as well- so if I use a desaturated version of my image  as a guide (with only the grey statue selected), the  original image is entirely desaturated to match. I don't want this- I simply want the curves adjusted so that things that are meant to be grey *are* grey (regardless of brightness) and other objects are their natural colour and saturation.
While I can theoretically play around with the curves manually, this is tedious and fiddly and is like trying to wrestle a snake(!) as fixing one part often upsets another, and it's very difficult to get things to look natural.
Is this doable? Any ideas would be appreciated- thank you,
    - AN

Thank you, but that's pretty much what I've been doing already when I mentioned adjusting the curves by hand.
To show what I mean here's a "good" image:-
Note that the dark bumpers and the light silver body are both neutral grey. Now, take a look at this version I've modified to illustrate the problem by altering the shape of the red channel's curve:-
Note that while the dark bumper has a reddish hue to it, the silver car body has a cyan tint. Now, load this into Photoshop and try removing the cast(s) by using the grey-point tool.
If you set it by choosing the reddish-cast bumper as the target, the light areas become even more cyan. If we click on the cyan-cast car body, the bumper goes even more red. Now you see the problem, I hope :-/
As I said before- yes, I know it's theoretically possible to fix this by playing with the curves for each channel. But that's nowhere near as easy as it sounds, particularly if you don't know what the distortion to the response curves were in the first place.
Ideally what we want to do is either to either (a) be able to set *multiple* grey points for objects at different levels, or (b) select areas that are supposed to be approximately grey. Then let Photoshop figure out the adjustments necessary.
Or is there another way to do it?

  • Premiere Pro CS6 creating weird colours in video

So I am editing this video of my sister riding her bike, just to test out the capabilities of my new camera (Nikon D5100, if it helps). I reviewed all the footage I shot in VLC before importing it to premiere, no issues. Everything is good. As soon as I import the video into premiere, these weird colours start showing up on my video:
Now when I go to the exact same spot in the unaltered video, it looks like this:
So I think, "right, no big deal. I just ignore them and export and everything is good."
    Wrong.
The first image above was taken from the exported copy. I really have no clue what is going on. I am running PP CS6 with the latest updates as of Decemeber 31st, 2014 (in case you are wondering, it is a completely legal copy, so it's not some Pirate Bay glitch). I have never had any issues with the program before- this just started today.
Also, the video specs are: 1080p (1920x1080) @ 29.97fps, taken on, as mentioned above, a brand-new Nikon D5100.
Anyone know what is going on? Thanks!

  • IPhone 5 jumping screen and colour distortion!

Hello, has anyone experienced their iPhone 5 screen jumping when surfing the net and also colour distortion? I have tried switching off and on several times plus also holing down both buttons at the same time but it keeps coming back? Please help! Thank you.

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
If that doesn't work then make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your phone examined.

  • Weird colour shift on TV through HDMI

    Hi,
I'm using my TV with XBMC to watch videos on my computer more comfortably, but even since I changed my computer the image get those weird shifts where it goes black for about a second, comes back on looking weird, then about 20 seconds later it's one second of black and then back on as normal again. But if I change channel on my TV when it happens, and then switch back to the HDMI channel corresponding to my computer, the image is fixed. I've tried timing this issue, and it seems to appear roughly every 20 minutes, but it can appear twice in 5 minutes, or not at all in 40...
Because an image is worth a hundred words, I took a picture with my phone during one of these colour shifts, here's what it looks like: http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/3284/imag0063gc.jpg . As you can see by the xbmc menu looking weird too, this is not the video's fault.
I've also tried switching the cable, but the issue remains. I've been using this setup for a while, but as I said, I changed computer recently, and part of this change was going from a nVidia card to an ATI one, more specifically a radeon HD 7870, and I'm using the official AMD driver (which is kind of required, since the free driver apparently doesn't support sound over HDMI for my card yet).
It's probably worth mentioning that my primary display, which is plugged in VGA, does not have this issue. Also, I have a Windows dual-boot, but I have yet to test if this issue also appears on Windows (which is kind of a pain to do, due to the randomness of my issue...).
I've tried googling this for days and have yet to find anyone reporting the same issue, but seeing how English isn't my native language, I might not have used the right keywords...
Because I guess this is relevant, here is my xorg.conf on pastebin: http://pastebin.com/2eWPKnt2 . This was generated using amdcccle, so it should be legit (though I do miss nvidia-settings, amd got some work to do on their GUI tool). Not sure if this is relevant, but just in case : to launch the computer on my TV, I use this xorg.conf (named xorg.conf.TV in my system), and start X with the following command (through an alias, of course):
    xinit .xinitrcTV -- /usr/bin/X :1 -config xorg.conf.TV
And my .xinitrcTV containing the following:
    setxkbmap fr
    xbmc
    xterm
So here I am, and I don't really have any idea what I could do to fix this problem... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Weird colours with QuickTime sources, broken preview renders & crash at exit (CS4)

    Hi erveryone,
I have a strange problem in Premiere Pro CS4: Allmost all QuickTime MOV that I put in the timeline show weird, broken colours. At first I thought this was a problem with a specific codec, but I have now tried several codecs and pretty much every one shows up equally broken. The only codec that seems to work fine is the one that my Canon EOS 550D produces (1080p, H.264 I believe), but that one does not play smoothly (not that I would expect it to do on my machine). Strangely, H.264 in lower resolutions fails again. Other containers seem to be unaffected. Here is a screenshot of the effect:
Also, my preview renders (when rendering the effecs on the timeline) are similarly broken. They behave a bit erratically. Sometimes they are just black, showing nothing and sometimes they show a still frame of one of the previously viewed videos. Colours are messed up in a similar way, so I suspect a connection. Here is the same clip from the screenshow above, preview-rendered:
Also, upon exiting Premiere, it usually crashes. This is less of a problem, but still very weird behaviour.
Any ideas how I could solve this?
Infos about my system which might be of relevance:
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (education version)
Windows Vista 32bit (SP2, all current updates installed)
    4GB RAM
    Intel Core2 Duo
ATI X1300 Pro  256MB (with newest available driver)
    QuickTime 7.6.6
The system has been freshly installed (from factory image - hence the older OS) so no malware or anything similar should mess anything up. Only software installed except the Creative Suite is Google Chrome.
On my laptop (Win7 64bit, Intel i5, no separate graphics card, same QT version) none of these problems appear.
    Greetings,
       Florian

I think I found the solution. Some further digging revealed that I did not have as previously assumed the latest driver for my graphics card installed. I was mislead because the manufacturer (Dell) did provide some updates, but not all of them (none in the past two years to be exact). I grabbed the newest driver kit from the ATI website and installed it. Strangely, the installer produced several errors and I get another error message at startup, but I think only the control software was affected and not the driver itself.
After some first tests, QuickTime movies behave as expected, the preview renders are working again and the crashes on exit are also gone. Yay!
Strange how much trouble a driver which is otherwise working perfectly can cause.

  • Weird Colours in Itunes and Quicktime for Movies

    Hi there,
Whenever I play videos in Itunes and Quicktime, all I can see are weird blurry colours on the screen although the sound works perfectly fine. The same thing happens when I try to play the movie trailers on the apple site...I have to open the trailer at least 5 times before it produces the proper image for the video, but that trick doesn't work for Itunes...these videos work perfectly fine on my Ipod however, it's just on Itunes and Quicktime they are blurry colours.
How can I fix this problem?
    Thanks.

does anyone else have this problem?

  • IPhone 4 Error - Screen Frozen/Flicker/Colour Distortion

    Hi,
Last night the screen on my iPhone completely malfunctioned. The colour has become distorted. The bottom third of the screen is constantly flickering, and it also projects an overlapping mirror image consisting of the top third of the screen (right now both the time and date appear on top of the 'slide to unlock' function, both are flickering constantly).
The phone is only six weeks old, is in excellent condition, has never been dropped or been subjected to any kind of damage or abuse. I don't know what to do. It is not insured.
Has any one heard of this problem before. If so, is there a way to repair it? If not, do Apple provide a warranty of any kind?

The iPhone and everything that came in the box is covered by a one year warranty. Make an appointment at an Apple store & if your found is found to be defective, it will be replaced on the spot.

  • Weird graphical glitches in Chrome with Mavericks

I installed Mavericks and since then I have a weird and common graphical glitch that affects the whole screen when using Chrome and happens for about half a second at a time. It is pretty frustrating. Does anyone know how to fix this? It looks like this:
Will there be an update to Mavericks soon? My computer is even slower since the install. Programs crashing often...

Have you tried another browser like Safari or Firefox?
    Firefox
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
