Weird File Locking Issue with Excel 2013

We are experiencing a strange issue whereby we are frequently unable to save Excel files; whilst working on a document a user will select Save As, change the name of the document and attempt to save, a 0KB file is created in the location and an error returned
to the user stating that the file is in use by another user. At this point it is normally possible to save but on occasion this has also failed. It is possible to duplicate the issue on multiple machines.
The user has Full control over the destination directory, both share & NTFS.
File Server is running Windows Server Essentials 2012R2.
The Users desktops are running Windows 7 sp1, all available Windows Updates have been applied.
They have an Office 2013 Small Business Premium subscription, two of the users have a full msi based installation of Office and one the Click-to-Run version.
They use Eset Endpoint Antivirus and Eset File Security on the server, the problem can be duplicated with both client & server antivirus disabled.
Have disabled power saving on client & server network cards.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

Hi,
As far as I know, if one user had opened or edited one file in File Server, the other users only could be open the file read-only. It could not be saved or other behavior.I would suggest the following:
Turn off the Preview Pane, Details Pane and pop ups that show information about file and desktop items.
This is a problem that has been reported to affect Windows 7 clients only, not Windows XP. The problem here may have something to do with the Windows Explorer in Windows 7. We are currently investigating this further and will post more information as it
is available.
In a Windows Explorer window, do the following:
1. Right click on the Start Button.
2. Click 'Open Windows Explorer'.
3. At the top left click Organize > Layout
4. Uncheck Details Pane and Preview Pane.
5. On a Windows menu, click on Tools > Folder Options.  In the box that opens up, click on the View tab.  Scroll down the list to
“Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items” and clear the checkbox and then click OK.

BTW, I recommend you
use a shared workbook to collaborate in Excel.

  • File Locking Issue with Concurrent Locks

    Hi. I'm trying to implement a procedure using the File Lock class for two instances of the same program (running on different servers) accessing files shared over an NFS mount in Unix (this is using Java 1.5). 99% of the time, this works great. One box will get the lock, and the other will respect that lock and not touch the file. However, the other 1% of the time, both boxes seem to access the same file simultaniously, allowing BOTH to acquire locks on the same file.
    I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to solve this problem. I've been searching all over but haven't found a solution. Like I said, the locking works most of the time - I've even independantly verified that it does (and that it's not just timing) with a test program. It's only when both programs access the file at the exact same does that there seems to be a problem.
    If it helps, here is the gist of my code:
          FileLock javaLock = null;
          FileChannel fileChannel = null;
          for(int i = 0; i < fileArray.length; i++)
             javaLock = null;
             fileChannel = null;
             if(!fileArray.exists())
    continue;
    try
    RandomAccessFile raLockFile = new RandomAccessFile(fileArray[i], "rw");
    try
    fileChannel = raLockFile.getChannel();
    if(fileArray[i].exists())
    javaLock = fileChannel.tryLock();
    catch(OverlappingFileLockException ofle)
    // Error printed here
    continue;
    catch(Exception e)
    // Error
    javaLock = null;
    if(javaLock == null)
    continue; // File is already locked, move to next one
    // Processing is done on the file here
    catch(Exception e)
    // Error
    finally
    try
    if(javaLock != null)
    javaLock.release();
    if(fileChannel != null)
    fileChannel.close();
    catch(Exception e)
    // Error

    I don't have the errors on hand at the moment, but most were File Not Found IOExceptions (because one box would finish processing the file and rename it out from under the other box). Using a bunch of System.out.println()s I was able to determine that both boxes were locking the same specific files producing those errors.
    The other weird thing that would happen is that the file would be processed correctly on one box, but somehow leave behind a zero length version of itself, which the other box would finish processing normally as if we had received a zero length file (as we have special code in place for that condition). This is probably the biggest problem, since I can trap File Not Founds (though it's messy and kind of defeats the purpose of using locks to begin with), but I don't have a real easy way to catch this (and I can't just toss out all zero lengths because we want to know if we legitamently got a zero length file in).
    As far as I can tell though, this problem doesn't occur outside of an NFS mount, but I haven't tested it extensively enough to be sure (since it's a random timing thing, it's difficult to reproduce outside of just dumping a ton of files on it). I'm not entirely sure how our NFS system in configured, since that is completely out of my hands (System Admins have contol over all of that). But I believe it has most of the latest patches.

  • Vertical Scroll issue with Excel 2013

    okay before i start this is NOT!! a fixed pane issue. checked and double checked
    i have a user who when scroll's the main view does not scroll, until you lift of the mouse button.
    as you click on the scroll bar, you get the number up displaying what Line you are on as you
    scroll this changes, but the view does not.
    scrolling with scroll lock on, using keys, and using the mouse wheel all work fine, just the
    scroll bar has this issue.
    i cant seen to find any options within excel or windows.
    anyone on here have any suggestions?
    just to add, the user is able to log onto multiple machines and the issue follows this user,
    but when another user logs onto the same machine the problem does not occur on that user, so I think it is a profile specific issue, would like to sort this out without deleted the user's profile

    Hi Zikofski,
    According to your description, my understanding is that as shown in the following figure the screen tip with content “Row: 2” is missing when you’re dragging/clicking the scrollbar.
    I suggest you can try to reset your XLB file to help check if settings of excel have been changed.
    XLB is a setting file format created by Microsoft Excel. XLB files contain custom settings for the toolbars (or command bars). These settings can be edited or customized by selecting “toolbar” from the view options. XLB files can contain information such
    as which toolbars are visible, their position, and their function. XLB files allow for the transfer of customization information between computers and users.
    Trying the following steps to reset you custom in excel:
    Go to the path in your own computer as shown in the following figure:
    Rename the *.xlb to *.xlb.old (Note: If you delete or rename *.xlb file, the settings of custom toolbars will lost.)
    Restart Excel and it will create a new *.xlb file
    Then, please check whether it is helpful.
    If my understanding is incorrect, please let me know. If possible could you take a screenshot and upload it, and could you be at bit more precise explain your problem so that we can get more accurate solutions to this problem. I am glad to help and forward
    to your reply.

  • Small file get extremely big after saving with Excel 2013

    A file who is only 666Kb big with Excel 2007 is opened with Excel 2013. When I direct safe that file, the size increases to more than 6GB. Opening that file takes more than one minute. And Excel seems to crasch.(Not responding) The problem seems to be one
    (1) sheet. when I delete rows the size of that file is increasing up to 16 GB. This means a less filed excel sheet, makes a bigger file.

    Hi,
    The issue seems happened in the special file and it may be caused by the conditional formatting, cell format, formula calculation automatic or macros,ect. Please see the thread which some communicators discussed:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2007-excel/why-do-my-excel-files-become-huge/8235dc08-aa70-4a65-9892-b776790d79c5?page=1
    Then, we may try the Mr. Ashish's suggestion:
    =====
    1. Identify the last filled up row of data and click on any cell in one row below that
    2. Select from that row till the end and delete all rows
    3. Do the same for columns
    4. Save and close the file
    5. Shut down MS Excel
    6. Reopen the file
    =====
    If the issue still exists, please copy all the content to new/blank Excel 2013 file to test.

  • A serious issue with excel file read in ODI

    hi gurus,
    Issue with excel file read is that we can read only one file by setting the path from ODBC Data Source Administrator-->System DNS -->Select Work book
    what i want to read the dynamic path(Every time I cant go back and set the Work book to select the excel file..
    So i came up with a solution to write a Vbscript that convert the excel to csv my problem got solved for dynamic paths the script is as follow:
    Set objArgs = WScript.Arguments
    For I = 0 to objArgs.Count - 1
    FullName = objArgs(I)
    FileName = Left(objArgs(I), InstrRev(objArgs(I), ".") )
    Set objExcel = CreateObject("Excel.application")
    set objExcelBook = objExcel.Workbooks.Open(FullName)
    objExcel.application.visible=false
    objExcel.application.displayalerts=false
    objExcelBook.SaveAs FileName & "csv",23
    objExcel.Application.Quit
    objExcel.Quit
    Set objExcel = Nothing
    set objExcelBook = Nothing
    Next
    Now this script convert the xls file to csv with comma seprated values
    e.g in excel sheet if data is ABC XYZ PQR
    csv will come with ABC,XYZ,PQR
    here the delimiter is , i want the delimiter as pipe | who's ascii code is 124
    but if i change 23 with 124 its not working i getting the error cannot save as...
    can anyone tell me that what should be the correct code for pipe
    so that the output is ABC|XYZ|PQR
    AS WE CAN USE THE SCRIPTS IN TOOLS

    I dont have the answer for your question but i have different approach in handling multiple Excel File.
    Step 1. Copy a sample source Excel File and Call it Final.xls .
    Step 2. Map this Final.xls to DSN and in Topology call this Final.xls
    Step 3. Do the Reversing and Map and test the Interface . Once its done.
    Step 4. Create a Package and using a http://odiexperts.com/?p=1426 get the list of all the Excel File
    Step 5 . Using this http://odiexperts.com/?p=273 create a Loop to Read the Excel File name
    Step 6 . Copy using OdiFileCopy to Final.xls and run your interface .
    Step 7. Increment the Loop and copy your next File for Final and run the interface
    Step 8 . Finally you will be able to read all the Excel File .
    Step 9 . Delete the source file [ Optional ]
    Hope this helps.

  • Error Message: "Excel cannot complete this task with available resources" when creating pivot table with Excel 2013

    Hi,
    One of our users encountered this problem with Excel 2013 while creating pivot tables, particularly with large files. We tried to modify Virtual Memory
    of the pc but error still persist. Why does this happen and how can we resolve this? Thanks.
    Another error message encountered by the user, this time when opening large files. The files she tried to open are working fine in 2010. But when opened in 2013, it prompted : "There
    isn't enough memory to complete this action. Try using less data or closing other applications."

    Hi,
    In regarding of the issue, please provide us more information to assist you better.
    Did your user using the Excel 2013 and Excel 2010 with same PC? If not, please let me know the both of the 2 PCs' hardware list/Windows operation system info.
    Did you using Excel 2013 32bit version and Excel 2010 64bit version?
    General speaking, this issue usually occurs with Office 2013 32 bit version. It has a limitation of 2Gb of memory that can be used by its process. And the 64-bit Excel can handle larger workbooks.
    Thus, if your user using 32bit Excel, I recommend try 64bit Excel instead.
    Here is a similar issue, we also could try it:

    We have a Sharepoint with Sp1 environment on windows 2012. Recently we upgraded the windows 2012 to 2012 r2. After the upgrade sharepoint environment is completely unstable.

    Thanks for the above article. Few issues are solved . One of the main issue is with Performancepoint Dashboard.

    Can any one please tell me, what is the issue with SQL92 setting ?
    Edited by: Anandsagar Sah on Mar 11, 2012 8:10 AM

    The framework works correctly in the Situation #1. Please, note that the locking statement in this case is "SELECT ... FOR UPDATE", but not "SELECT ... FOR UPDATE NOWAIT" (as it is in the Situation #2). When you entered the 2nd tab and tried to update the row, then the framework executed the locking statement and the row was locked (and it remained locked because the framework detected that another user had modified the row, so it stopped the processing and no COMMIT operation was executed). When you entered the 3rd tab and tried to update the row, then the framework tried to lock the row againg, but the locking statement was blocked by the existign lock and it started waiting on the lock from the 2nd tab. So this is expected behaviour.
    The interesting question is why you do not get any error in the Situation #2. In my opinion you should get an error because the locking statement from the 3rd tab should fail immediately (because the row should have been locked from the 2nd tab and the locking statement is with NOWAIT option). I suspect that when the DB is Oracle and you use Oracle SQLBuilder, then the ADF issues a DB savepoint at the beginning of the DML operation and rolls back to the savepoint is a case of some failure, so the 2nd tab has not left any lock. You can check this by setting on SQL trace on the DB server.

  • How To Make Shapes Change Colors When Clicking on them. Example Sheet Sales Data.xlsx template with Excel 2013

    My question is related to the Sales Data.xlsx template that comes with Excel 2013
    IN this workbook is a sheet named Sales Data. It has, 3 shapes. One each for each of the tab sheets in the workbook. When I click on the 'Sales Report' shape it selects the sales report tab. When you do this the shape changes color and the 'Sales Data' shape
    also changes color.
    However I'm unable to figure out how the colors are changing.
    I don't see any macros in the workbook/worksheet. Nor do I see any code for worksheet events. I don't see any modules in VBA either. I think what is happening is that there are 2 shapes. When you click on one, the one shape goes to the background and the
    other one comes to the foreground.
    I'm no sure how it's doing that.
    Can someone look at this template, Sales Data.xlsx that comes with Excel and explain how this functionality works?
    Thank You
    Keith Aul
    Keith Aul

    The shapes are exactly as I suspected, each of 3 sheets has 3 'navigation' shapes. The shape with the same name as the sheet has no hyperlink and is coloured differently to indicate it refers to the active sheet. The other two have hyperlinks linked to respective
    sheets. 3x3 shapes, 9 in total, none of them ever change colour!
    It's logical though not necessary to name each shape same as the sheet it links to, but they'd work just as well with their original default names.
    For aesthetics, the shapes that refer to own sheet have a horizontal line on top, actually two shapes as a group.
    If still confused copy each set of 3 shapes to a 4th sheet, or open two new windows so you can see all three sheets at the same time.

  • I am having a file moving issue with Adobe Reader XI

    I am having a file moving issue with Adobe Reader XI on a Windows 7 32bit system. When Adobe reader is set as the default program for PDF files moving files from one directory to another takes over a minute, regardless of the size of the file. When the default handler is set to another program, like Nuance or PDF Creator, this is instant. What in Adobe Reader is causing this and what can I do to speed up file moving? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    I am using Windows 7 home edition and using Internet Explorer 10
    The PDF's are online on websites that I am trying to open.  Both on the site as well as trying in a new window.
    Thank you
    Jeff

  • Serious locking issues with Main Stage 3

    Having serious locking issues with main stage 3.  I just did a music gig over the weekend with main stage 3, and the application locked up 8 times during my performance.  There were also several times where there was a delay between the time I struck a key on the midi controller and the time sound actually came out of the audio interface.  Has anyone else ran into this problem??
    10.
    I am running mountain lion 10.8.5, on a 2009 Macbook 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. w 8 GB Ram.
    Anyone know how to fix this, if even possible?

    Just read some reviews. There seems to be a lot of problems with the latest main stage update.  I didn't notice these latency problems until did the latest update..
    Apple please fix this quickly!!!

  • HT1338 My fuji x100s has RAW file compatibility issue with OS 10.8.2

    My fuji x100s has RAW file compatibility issue with OS 10.8.2, my iphoto11 cannot recognise the file format.  Anyone know of this issue too? Appreciate if anyone can offer some helps.  Thanks

    Correct.  The Fuji X-100s is not currently supported by iPhoto or Aperture (or the RAW converter in OS X itself).  You can submit feedback via iPhoto and request this.

  • Issues with Excel files containing graphics

    I have a large excel 2013 spreadsheet containing several 3D graphs.  It is 79 pages long.  I am using Adobe Acrobat 9 on windows 7.
    When attempting to convert to PDF, once Acrobat reaches page 23 it stops working.  Pages 23-79 come out blank.
    When I look at the page preview, I can see all pages just fine.  I also have not manually inserted any page breaks within my excel document.  I've read somewhere that manual page breaks may cause Acrobat to act buggy.
    I've also attempted to converting on other computers:
    Windows 7
    Acrobat XI
    Windows 8
    Acrobat 8
    All combination of versions and systems are procuding the same result.  Possibly a memory time-out issue?  All of my computers have at least 4 gigs od RAM and 3 GHz processors.  One is 32-bit, the other two are 64-bit
    I've used the method of choosing the Adobe PDF Printer, printing within Excel and Printing Directly from Adobe Acrobat Distiller... all attempts have failed.
