Weird Finder Problem

G5, 10.4.11
I was dragging several thousand jpegs off of an SD card to the trash when my finger slipped and I released to the desktop where the finder said "copying 4,123 files to desktop"
Immediately, I tried to stop it, clicking the X did not work so I tried Opt-Command-Escape to force quit the finder, that did not work.
My only option I thouhght at the time was to force shutdown by holding the power button down.
Now, the computer works fine but there are no desktop icons.
If I go to thew desktop folder directly and try to highlight the Jpeg files and put in the trash, it says "some of the items are in use by another application....are you sure you want to remove these" with stop and continue buttons available.
"continue" doesnt work, and "stop" just gets me out of the process.
I have trashed the finder prefs already but that does not have any effect.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Let's assume all these image files have the same extension - .jpg or .jpeg. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter or paste the following commands:
cd /Users/yourusername/Desktop
sudo rm -rf *.jpg
You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed. Press RETURN after each command line.
If the extensions are .jpeg then change this command to "rm -rf *.jpeg".
This should erase all the image files in the Desktop folder.

Quicktime causing weird FINDER problems

Still running TIger 10.4.11
I downloaded 7.6 Quicktime and now my finder keeps flashing every few minutes. Everything on the Desktop AND the menu bar disappears for a second then comes back.
Anyone else having this problem?

It was my stuffit with the quicktime update.

Hi, sorry that I don't know how to post image directly, so you have to click the link to go to the picasa site to see the screen captures.
Am having weird display problem with my Snow Leopard 10.6.1 on Macbook Pro 4,1. It's only in Finder item so far, things are randomly mis-displayed, or wiped out completely. If you see my screen shots you will have a clear idea.
Is this a know problem? I don't even know how to search this problem on the web, or in this forum. I never seen such problem on my iMac with Leopard 10.5.7.
Any solutions will be appreciated. Of course, right now restart seems to be the only solution I have.

he general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Also, don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.

Weird internet problem / ssl connection error, site loads in safari not in firefox or other way around

I really can't figure out this problem. Search the internet tried all kinds of things, nothing help so far.
I have a Macbook Pro (Lion originally installed) running on Mavericks (all latest updates). SSD installed and the DVD tray is replaced by the original HDD.
The laptop wasn't running very smooth anymore so decided to give it a fresh Mavericks install (even though I know it's not really necessary for mac, it helped, everything is much faster except a weird internet problem came up).
After freshly installing Mavericks I couldn't get into my google account anymore, just wouldn't load. Tried Safari (use this normally) and Firefox and Chrome, this last was gave a SSL connection error, both Safari and FF said the website couldn't be loaded because the server didn't respond. For Gmail I use Mailplane which is just stuck on a white page. I tried repairing the keychain, repaired disk and disk permissions, cleaned browsers, turned off firewall and antivirus (Shopos) started in safe mode, checked time settings which were all good. Nothing of this helped. I even ended up creating a usb bootdisk for Mavericks, formatted the disk and reinstalled from the start just Mavericks and nothing else, started Safari, still the same problem. As even this didn't help I figured it's not worth reinstalling all software so put back my backup.
Now I ended up somehow only being able to use Gmail normally in Firefox, Chrome still gives SSL error and Safari can load the inbox, but I can't open any messages. I get the error there is a problem with the connection. If I try in Basic HTML mode it surprisingly does work.
You would say, just use Firefox, finished...but the thing is that sometimes random websites won't load in Firefox, when I load the same site in Safari it works perfectly.
O yes, I also tried the connect to my iPhone and use the Cellular data network, then it's no problem using Gmail in Safari normally. You would say it's a router problem, but I have another Macbook Pro (just one model later running Mountain Lion) this one works perfectly with every browser. Also my iPhone does everyting logged into the WiFi network.
You can understand I really have no clue what's going on here, I don't see any logic. I can only think of a hardware problem in my Macbook, but don't see how that could cause these problems.
I hope someone is ably to help me ?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

I plugged in a USB drive, tried to open Finder, got the message Finder.app can't be opened - 10810, went into terminal.app, messed up, now terminal screen blank. how do i regain terminal in order to fix finder problem?

With my iMac running, I plugged in a USB drive. When I clicked on finder, I got the message Finder.app can't be opened - 10810. I removed the USB drive. I messed up while in Terminal.app trying to fix Finder problem. Now my terminal screen is blank, just the cursor, but no action after typing a command & clicking enter. Help!

I finally figured out a way to Restart (normal way wasn't working...) & that Restart DID FIX both the Terminal problem AND the Finder problem. So easy, yet so elusive. Thanks so much.

Finder problem with 10.4.6

I installed the update today and now my iMac, which I love and has NEVER had a problem has a Finder problem.
When I scroll through files in a Finder window the file names will get "all bunched up" for lack of a better description.
The names of the files will seem to stack on top of each other and it looks messy and it's driving me nuts. Anyone else see this?

Unfortunately, the Apple Installer's abbreviated "Important Information" screen doesn't mention it — so folks who didn't check the KnowledgeBase were caught unaware.

Finder problem or LaCie HD problem

How do I tell whether my external HD (LaCie d2 quadra) used for TM failed or if the trouble is with my Mac (Finder)?
Today I had trouble saving a pages document. The Finder showed the spinning beach ball When I typed the 1st few letter of the destination folder. I checked Activity Monitor & it showed “Finder not responding.” I force quit the finder & discovered I could not restart since no menu bar. I could not access the application folder & I also did not know any keyboard shortcut to bring up terminal so I could not use
“sudo shutdown -r now” or “sudo shutdown -h now”
I gave up & Manually shut down with the On/Off button.
I probably should NOT have force quit Finder! I should have just restarted.
When I booted up again everything worked OK except the LaCie HD icon was missing from the desktop & the TM would not work (since there was no mounted volume for TM). I repaired permissions, I restarted, I shut off & turned on the LaCie HD --no joy.
I am not certain but, suspect that the Finder problem CAUSED the LaCie/unable to mount problem. I just don’t check constantly to verify that the LaCie volume remains mounted. It may have preceded the Finder problem but if so, not by more than a few hours.
The LaCie HD is connected by FW800. I tried to use FW 400 cable & USB cable & same result. The LaCie power light goes on but I don’t hear the HD noises. I don’t know but suspect that the HD must 1st mount before it makes HD noises.
The LaCie is only 16 months old & under warranty. I hate to send it in especially if it is fine & my Mac is the problem.
Under Disk Utility the LaCie is not shown. Under System Profiler/Firewire it shows up as “Unknown Device.”
Is there a way (log?) to find out When the last TM backup completed? Is there a definitive test to tell if It is the Mac software, The Mac Hardware - (doubtful unless FW 800, 400 & USB ports all failed ) , or the LaCie that is the problem?

I looked in Console & did find a backup failed but I had been getting occasional TM backup failed messages for months & usually if I manually backup or just wait , the next one works.
I think that is a TM problem as I checked the forums When it 1st happened.
I did not save the Pages document to LaCie. LaCie is used only for automatic TM backups.
I bought LaCie 11-2007 & used exclusively for TM since. I don’t recall anything about “Mac OS Extended Journaled or GUID partition” but, I followed instructions & it went smoothly & has worked very well so I really doubt I set it up incorrectly.
Thomas, Can you point me to any documentation or even anecdotes about the failure of an external drive causing Finder problems? How can I take your very good suggestion to repair the external (LaCie) disk when Under Disk Utility the LaCie is not shown. Under System Profiler/Firewire it shows up as “Unknown Device.”
When you discuss erasing the drive, you are talking about erasing the External drive, right? But if it is not mounting how can I do anything with it? When you say “If the external disk is connected, turned on and not showing up in Disk Utility, then you've got something more serious going on, probably a hardware failure.” You are referring to a failure of the LaCie hardware not the Mac, right?
Update/ more symptoms:
Keyboard shortcut to switch Spaces stopped working. So did mouse buttons for Expose & Dashboard.. So did Hot corners. Repaired Permissions, no help. Trashed Finder plist, no help. Tried to restart & could not. Had to open Terminal & use “sudo shutdown -r now” & Then it restarted with everything working fine except still no LaCie External TM HD mounting.
Something is wrong with my Mac. Probably the LaCie is just fine.
I will use disk Utility to Repair disk with Leopard DVD.

Always finding problem "server not find in safari" for any redirection or even opening some sites through google.. Hv to delete cookies an still some times work some times no..pls do not give me ******** answer like apple for restarting wifi..its a serious issue and i think millions of users are finding this problem.. Apple should be forced to fix this issue through an update..or should come out with a or react solution..

It is not a broad issue, I have absolutely no problems using Safari and ios7.1 on many ipads.
Verify that you have good DNS entries, that can be a major cause of this type of message.

Weird Finder Crash?

I hope someone here can help me. I've owned this 13" Macbook for about 1.5 years and it's my first mac ever. I've never seen it do this before and don't know what's causing it. I'd like to get a logger to record what happens, but don't know how to do that.
Starting yesterday, my computer randomly (it seems) stopped p allowing me to fully switch between programs from time to time. What happens is that I am in a program (so far it's happened while in Skype, Calculator, InDesign and Preview) and suddenly Cmd-Tab to switch between programs does nothing. The only way I can get to another program is to go to my hot corner that makes all the windows of all the open programs display and clicking on the window of a different program. But when I am in that program, I only have limited functionality. For example, I can not save a document nor can I type in a document or editable field on a web page. I can however follow links in a web page or click and get a cursor in a document. Additionally, the menu at the top of the screen is still the one from the program I was in when the problem started. So if I was in Skype, it's only skype menus at the top and they are unusable.
This can happen whether or not I quit the program I am in and even if I choose force quit in the Apple menu (the only one which works when this happens) and force quit a program, it doesn't help. I have tried re-launching Finder through the force quit window and it doesn't help. After a few minutes, even this menu stops working and the only thing I can do is hold the power button down till the computer shuts off. When I turn it back on, the same thing keeps happening. If I restart from the Apple menu, the computer is fine when it re-boots until the problem re-occurs.
I should say that the ONLY change I have made to my system is telling it to stop using the external drive I was using for Time Machine for that purpose and then re-formatting that drive. I also put all of my pictures onto that drive and deleted them from my HDD (a new Time Machine drive is on the way because the old one was too small).
This is a really frustrating problem and I don't even know what to search on to try and find solutions. If there's any help or solutions or suggestions you can give, I would appreciate it. This is concerning because, although I have been saving more often while this has been happening, there is more of a chance that work is going to be lost.

Well I am having a issue with finder also. I get Finder quit unexpectedly window and it keeps popping up making things a real pain in the... I can not use any apple programs only firefox works right now. Because finder wont open I can not try and re install snow leopard from disk. My computer started freezing up today so I upgraded to 10.6.4 and I got the finder problem. Any help would be nice.

miraculous...i downloaded quicktime player from apple website and then i run it.upon double click on this quick time player and then i double clicked on itunes...there comes an enry of itunes software...now i am completely enjoying my musics.photos in smart phone.

Weird audio problem during calls

I have a weird audio problem and was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem or could help...
My wife and I both have iPhone 5's and sometimes (not all the time) when she calls me (or I call her), it connects, but no matter which audio input I choose (phone, bluetooth, speaker, headphones), I cannot hear her, but she can hear me... I hang up, call back (and when I call, there is no dialing sound, nor any other phone sounds) and it's the same thing. Sometimes restarting the phone works, other times I have to restart it 3-4 times before it'll work again. I try different things during these calls, like turning on/off bluetooth and/or wifi (pretty much anything I can think of that would make a difference), but nothing seems to help.
The (other) weird part is that after the last time of this happening, I tried calling my iPhone with my office phone and it worked fine, so then I immediately call my wife back with my iPhone and it was doing the same thing again. I called her back using my office phone and could talk to her fine...
This problem has been going on for a few months now and I have tried restoring the phone a couple times (and I am on the latest iOS) and sadly, that hasn't done anything to help... Does anyone have any ideas what is going on? I'd make an appointment for the problem, but since it doesn't do it all the time, I don't know what good it would do... But it is getting very frustrating!

Thanks for the response! It happened again yesterday... It seems to be happening more frequently in the past few weeks now.
I checked the link and have tried all of the things listed at one point or another over the past few months. I did just check my Carrier settings and it said it had updated (it's on 14.1), but I am not sure when that happened (could have been today, could have been after my last restore last week, not sure). I'll keep my fingers crossed that maybe that fixed it...
If it continues to act up, would you recommend that I bring the phone in to an Apple store or an AT&T store? I bought the phone through Apple, but my carrier is AT&T (and if you suspect that the problem may be with the cellular conection), maybe the AT&T store would be the better choice?
I really wish the problem would be more consistant or go away, cause trying to get the problem solved is driving me crazy!

Slooow internet and weird mouse problems?

I recently upgraded my iMac to Leopard (10.5.4) and started having weird mouse problems. At start up, mouse would be frozen in upper left corner. I'd restart, switch mice, restart, over and over. I use a Wacom tablet w cordless mouse plus Apples alum cordless keyboard. Eventually I tried switching USB ports for my Wacom tablet and the mouse was OK. I have learned that when this problem occurs, I need to shut down and unplug everything. That seems to solve it. Anyone know why? ALSO, ever since upgrading I have found the Internet to be appallingly slow. I have 2 GB memory and just upped my internet speed (supposedly) through Embarq.

You do not have the same problem. It is always possible to restore a backup made with a previous OS to the most recent OS. If you are having a problem restoring a backup from an older version the problem is not related to the fact that you have 8.3 on your device.

KT6V Weird boot problems

I'm having this weird boot problem (and no it doesn't seem to be the standard one)
OK..
I have the following :
AMD Athlon 2000+
KT6V LSR mainboard
2x 256 Crucial PC2700 memory
IDE Hard Disk (120gb segate)
Creative 5700ultra Graphics card (AGP)
Cd Rom
Chieftec 400w PSU
WinXP Pro
If I set my CPU FSB to 100mhz (everything else on auto).. win Xp pro boots fine and all is pretty good except that my chip is now seen as a lowly 1.25ghz..
If I then set my CPU FSB to 133 or 166 then the machine boots (ie it beeps etc..).. starts to load windows xp (I get the logo and that's when the problem happens) and either black screens (ie.. nothing and the monitor turns off) or blue screens with the windows message saying that windows has detected a hardware fault and has halted the system..
I know my memory, chip, heatsink etc all work because just over an hour ago they all worked fine in my KT3 ultra.
What is going on as I've tried almost everything to try and solve this, with the only option to set the FSb to 100mhz which is incorrect for my CPU.
How do I fix this.
I've looked through the forum but this is not the same problem as simple reboots.. this is weird.
If I can't fix this then I guess it'll be send it back.. which is a shame because I like MSi motherboards.

I've checked the CPU heatsink.. and nothings wrong !
(Can't check the voltage but I know the PSU is Ok as I did run it in a custom case with 4 Cd writters, 4 HDs, loads of lights etc.. before I moved to this new plain case tonight)
What's weird is that set at 100FSb it's fine but at 133 or 166 it just crashes after the loading XP logo is displayed. Up until that point it's all fine.
But why does it run Ok at 100mhz and not 133mhz ?
Please help.. before I end up fixing this with a hammer !
