Well I've already screwed things up on my new MBP

Might be the first of many questions. I have a brand new MBP running 10.6.6 and an old MBP running 10.5.8. I ran the Migration Assistant today. Obviously I haven't a clue what I am doing. (Should leave things like this to experts.) I had some success and I had some failures. So failure # 1 is my Address Book. How the heck do I get my contacts from the old machine over to the new machine? I've tried moving from the entire "address book folder" from old home folder/library/application support to the same place on new MBP. Also moved old Address Book Preferences to new computer; I feel like I followed all of the directions I read -- but I've mucked something up. Now address book on new computer looks to have 20 MB in it -- but when I open it -- no contacts seen. And in target mode, I cannot open the old address book with new MBP. I get a message that says: "You cant use this version of the Address Book with this version of Mac OS X. You have Address Book 4.1.2." I screwed something up but no idea what -- and not sure how to fix it. Should I have trashed new MBP Address Book files BEFORE i started trying to move things? Any ideas on how to remedy my self-inflicted woes? Thanks. I betcha I'm going to have the exact same questions about iCal too. At least my iTunes all moved properly.

Your best bet is to start over.
Erase the new Mac's internal HD, reinstall OSX from the disc that came with it, then use +Setup Assistant+ when it starts up again. That will transfer everything from your old Mac, and set it up exactly the same (unless you choose to omit things).
See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum). Start with the green box there.
(And, just for future reference, paragraphs are your friend -- they make things much more readable)

  • Is it possible that Verizon could have screwed things up more than this?

I contacted Verizon 10 days ago about internet and cell phone service the person I spoke with told me that Verizon did not offer internet in Illinois and I should call something called Frontier Communications
I should have taken this as a sign that I shouldn't do business with Verizon
Instead I went to your office on State street in Chicago. I was told that
Verizon does in fact have internet, they have an arrangement with ComCast. I was told
if I signed a 2 year contract, the first 6 months would be  $20 a month and then the price
would be $40 a month for rest of the contract.
I signed up and was given an account number and a number to call ComCast
When  I spoke to Comcast, I was told that there was no agreement with Verizon
I went back to Verizon, Verizon called Comcast. Now Comcast was saying there was a agreement but the terms were different
It was now $20 a month for 6 months, but no contract. After 6 months there was no guarantee what could happen
to the price. There could be another promotion,  it could go up
I agreed reluctantly and signed up
The earliest appointment was the following Monday.
I had to leave work early for the appointment. I won't get paid for this missed time
I was given a time frame for when the ComCast Technician would show up. He was late; he arrived after the timeframe
I had ordered wireless internet. I know I ordered wireless because I discussed this with the comcast rep when I placed the order
We talked about how many devices could use the wireless at the same time, how far I could be from the router, whether there was a separate router and modem or if it was one unit, if I could buy my own rather than rent it, etc.
The technician did not have wireless equipment with him. He said the order didn't indicate that it was wireless.
I asked if he could install what he had since I had been waiting almost a week for the internet and then I could go to their office to swap it
He said no, a technician had to install it. If he installed what he had and they sent out another technician later with a wirelss router
they would charge me a second installation charge
The worst part though, is the earliest they can have someone back out is Wednesday ,ten more days later
That means almost three weeks with no internet at home and I have to take off from work again and lose more pay to wait for the technician again
I do computer support. I'm on call for work. If I get called out at night and don't have internet, I have to go downtown in the middle of the night

I understand that you are frustrated with the yes/no/yes regarding internet through Verizon.  I am assuming you are referring to DSL or fiber optic internet with Wi-Fi, since you state the internet service is actually provided by Comcast.  That is as far as my understanding goes.  Your post is titled "Is it possible that Verizon could have screwed things up more than this," but the rest of your complaints (please understand I do not argue the validity of your anger or frustration) are, in fact, regarding services rendered (or not) by Comcast.
I used to have a bundle with Centurylink internet, Directv satellite, and Verizon Wireless.  I got a separate bill from Verizon but I got a discount for the Centurylink and Directv bill by linking my cell phone numbers and creating a "triple play."  Centurylink had ridiculous scheduling issues with their techs, and it took five calls and two weeks to actually get the internet hooked up, at 1.5 mbps as the lines couldn't accommodate the 10 mbps the rep offered.  I was upset with Centurylink, not Verizon.  I had upgraded my cell phones through Centurylink, but if/when I had any issues, I called Verizon.
The issues you are describing are not within Verizon's control, which should have been clear when you had to speak with Comcast to set up the account and order.  You need to call Comcast to resolve it, and the sooner the better.  I had a horrible time trying to recoup money I paid to Directv after breaking the bundle, and eventually Centurylink refunded my money since the were the ones refusing to release my payments to Directv, saying I had a bundle but they could not discuss billing for Directv service. Almost all companies have a window for refunds and billing disputes, and Centturylink gave me the runaround until I demanded escalation.  Once the dispute period is over you don't have a leg to stand on for credits or anything else.  I had to get noisy to get results, and you might have to as well.
Step one is calling Comcast and placing the blame where it belongs, then work toward a solution to rectify the lost time and frustration.

  • What to do with between Set up as new iphone or Restore from this back up? i just want to transfer all my purchased apps and contacts to my new iphone?  don't want to screw thing up. thanks

I plugged in the iphone 5 to PC via itunes what should i do  between Set up as new iphone or Restore from this back up? i just want to transfer all my purchased apps and contacts to my new iphone?  don't want to screw thing up. Please help..... thanks

    Is this a new iPhone?
If so, when connecting a new iPhone to iTunes for the first time that has been used to sync with another iPhone or iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device to the new iPhone, or set up the new iPhone as a new iPhone.
If you don't want to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device, select set up as a new iPhone. No existing data or settings will be erased or changed when selecting as a new iPhone. Not that difficult or difficult at all.

  • I wan to rename my computer - but not screw things up

I don't like having my full name spelled out as the owner of the computer, e.g., "george xxxxx's computer. I have read some posts about changing names in accounts and even on used computers. But I am nervous about possibly screwing things up. I'm not sure what might get screwed up, other than when I network with my laptop and/or my older G4.
    Any advice? Thanks.

So, to sum up and add a bit.
You can change your Computer Name (System Preferences > Sharing). This is the one that shows up on computer-to-computer networks you create, and in Bonjour if you turn it on.
You can change your Name (System Preferences > Accounts). This is the one that shows up on the login screen.
You can't easily change your Short Name, which is the name of your home folder (it's grayed out in System Preferences > Accounts). This is what all the posts you read are caused by - people just secondary-clicking on their home folder in Finder and selecting Rename. So, I guess I was incorrect - technically you can easily change the short name (thanks Apple, for making it so easy to screw up something quite badly). You just shouldn't do it that way!
If you want to change your short name, and are intimidated by the Apple kbase article that BDAqua linked to (it intimidates the heck out of me!), you can use Dan Frakes utility (only works with Tiger, but that should be ok for you since you're posting in the Tiger forums):
    http://homepage.mac.com/frakes/ChangeShortName.html
(or, if that doesn't work, because he sometimes exceeds his .Mac download limit, go to his home page and click on Change Short Name in the sidebar there.)
    Hope this helps...

  • Itunes card claims to already been redeemed, it is brand new

Itunes card claims to already been redeemed, it is brand new

I've had this problem as well. Apple Support are telling me that I need to provide copies of receipts from the store it was purchased in, but this was a gift (as in "Gift Card"), so I don't know where it was purchased and can't get the receipt.  I do know that the code cover was completely unscratched when I used it.  I'm really annoyed about this - feel very let down by Apple.  People need to be aware that these cards are not secure.   If you buy them then you need to keep the receipts and ideally video record yourself scratching the cover and redeeming.

    Congrats on your new MBP.
I agree with the above, especially re: Switch 101 and Mac 101. Both will give you a great start.
In addition to the good suggestions already offered above, here are my suggestions:
    (1) Anti-virus is not needed.
    (2) Don't add any other non-Apple software either until you KNOW that you need it. Apple software works great with Macs, and it does most of what many users want without need to resort to third-party.
    (3) Kudos for the GREAT suggestion above to get a Mac compatible external hard drive for backup!
Then setup Time Machine and make your first backup. The first one will take hours, so let it run overnight. Mac can go to sleep when the backup is done.
After the initial backup, Time Machine does incremental backups. Therefore, subsequent backups will not take nearly so long. At regular intervals, and whenever you have added anything expensive, difficult, or irreplaceable to your hard disk, connect your external disk and make another Time Machine backup.
The beauty of this is that it is easy to restore your Mac back to your last working Time Machine backup should anything ever give you trouble. The first time you need to do a restore, you will be astounded. You will NEVER regret having the security of good, easy backups.
To learn more about Time Machine, search your Mac's Finder > Help for "Time Machine" (without the quotation marks). You can learn more here, too: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    (4) Use your Mac's Finder > Help whenever you have a question. It often has the answer you need.
    (5) Enjoy your new MBP!

I am trying to log on to iwork but it keeps saying that my password is incorrect. I have already reset it and entered my new password and it still is not working. what should i do?

I really can't comprehend the logic that leads to believe that password for old apple id will come to e-mail for new id. Buy may be I just misunderstood something. Contact Apple for assist with password retrieval. If you can verify yourself as account owner they may be able to help you.

A number of months ago I relocated by Itunes folder to a NAS drive. It appears when I did the last I tunes update Itunes set the destination path of the Itunes media to the default location, the result was Itunes couldn't install music, apps, video until I set the correct destination path.
The bit that confused me was it was transferring some media. This was of course the media I had downloaded since the last Itunes update which had gone to the default location.
I hope that makes sense and is off some help.

  • Does Office 2004 Student Teacher edition work well with our new MBP?

    Hello All,
I have an older copy of MS Office 2004 for Mac: Student/teacher. Does it run well on our new MBP's?
I also run iWork 09' but need Office for work. I have read online that the newest MS Office is not that good.
    Thanks

Hi,Office 2004 is designed for PowerPC processors, so you have to use Rossetta to have it work with the new mbp, as it is based on Intel processors, and the performance may not be very satisfactory.
Office 2008 is a Universal application and runs well on Intel Macs.

  • Was not getting Apple Care for my new MBP retina a bad thing?

I recently bought a MBP retina, and I didn't get the apple care because it sorta went over my budget. I mean, I don't bring my computer around too much...
Isn't there a one year warranty that is already included in the price of the MBP??

You have 1 year from date of purchase to add AppleCare (but assume you will need all of that last week, just in case, to avoid missing it by just 1 day).
Some people wait to save the money for 11 months, while others buy it immediately to have no lapse in telephone spport.

  • I recently created a new folder, dragged some items into it, and found that the entire contents of my desktop appeared to be in there as well. This happens every time I make a new folder. Any suggestions?

I recently created a new folder on my MacBook, dragged some items into it, and found that the entire contents of my desktop appeared to be in the folder as well. This happens every time I make a new folder. Any suggestions?

Csound1 What Ive been trying to explain is that I have been running bootcamp, I open the app where the first screen is the introduction, i hit continue, the first time I select "download the latest windows support software fromm Apple" then I return and instead select "Install Windows 7." Then hit continue. The third screen is where I "Create a Partition for Windows" I set Windows to 80 gigs then hit INSTALL. As stated before Bootcamp cannot find the install drivers saying "The installer disc could not be found." My windows software is on a USB drive not a disc, I tried using a virtual disc reader to make it appear that the windows software was running on a disc, still no luck. What I would like to know is how to install windows on bootcamp.

    Update!
This is what I did to fix both the skipping songs problem and the iPod verifying forever & not able to restore problem (because of iTunes 9):
    a) I used Disk Utility to reformat my iPod while in Disk Mode using the instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363?viewlocale=en_US
    and here:
    http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml#backup
    b) Do not unplug your iPod after reformatting (mine showed up as a firewire disk) - simply launch iTunes ( I went back to 8.2) and follow the Restore instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339
iPod is recognized, syncs and doesn't skip songs anymore after that miserable experience with iTunes 9!!!

  • Is there any way to set up my iPhone as an iCloud backup after I've already set it up as a new iPhone?

Is there any way to set up my iPhone as an iCloud backup after I've already set it up as a new iPhone?

If you mean you want to restore from an iCloud backup, go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings, then go through the setup assistant again and when given the option choose to Restore from iCloud Backup (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766).
