What are idocs, BAPI, RFC?

Hi,
What are idocs, BAPI, RFC?
Regards,
anuj

Hii,
BAPIs and RFCs are the functions exposed by SAP, when it comes to the integration part, you have to know that particular BAPI or RFC. For example, if you want to get table data or want to query to the SAP table then you use RFC_READ_TABLE. Similarly if you want to know whether customer is existing, you need to know which RFC/BAPI has this info. May I know which tool are you using, are you talking about generating a proxy and playing around that.
Data Creation in Idoc
IDocs are text encoded documents with a rigid structure that are used to exchange data between R/3 and a foreign system. Instead of calling a program in the destination system directly, the data is first packed into an IDoc and then sent to the receiving system, where it is analyzed and properly processed. Therefore an IDoc data exchange is always an
asynchronous process. The significant difference between simple RFC-calls and IDoc data exchange is the fact, that every action performed on IDocs are protocolled by R/3 and IDocs can be reprocessed if an error occurred in one of the message steps.
While IDocs have to be understood as a data exchange protocol, EDI and ALE are typical use cases for IDocs. R/3 uses IDocs for both EDI and ALE to deliver data to the receiving system. ALE is basically the scheduling mechanism that defines when and between which partners and what kind of data will be exchanged on a regular or event triggered basis. Such a set-up is called an ALE-scenario.
IDoc is a intermediate document to exchange data between two SAP Systems.
*IDocs are structured ASCII files (or a virtual equivalent).
*Electronic Interchange Document
*They are the file format used by SAP R/3 to exchange data with foreign systems.
*Data Is transmitted in ASCII format, i.e. human readable form
*IDocs exchange messages
*IDocs are used like classical interface files
IDOC types are templates for specific message types depending on what is the business document, you want to exchange.
WE30 - you can create a IDOC type.
An IDOC with data, will have to be triggered by the application that is trying to send out the data.
FOr testing you can use WE19.

An IDoc is simply a data container that is used to exchange information between any two processes that can understand the syntax and semantics of the data...
1.IDOCs are stored in the database. In the SAP system, IDOCs are stored in database tables.
2.IDOCs are independent of the sending and receiving systems.
3.IDOCs are independent of the direction of data exchange.
The two available process for IDOCs are
Outbound Process
Inbound Process
AND There are basically two types of IDOCs.
Basic IDOCs
Basic IDOC type defines the structure and format of the business document that is to be exchanged between two systems.
Extended IDOCs
Extending the functionality by adding more segments to existing Basic IDOCs.
To Create Idoc we need to follow these steps:
Create Segment ( WE31)
Create Idoc Type ( WE30)
Create Message Type ( WE81)
Assign Idoc Type to Message Type ( WE82)

  • Difference among  IDOCS,BAPI,RFC?

what is the difference among  IDOCS,BAPI,RFC? and what is the real need to use them and again where exactly these are used in real time applications?

    Hi,
BAPI are RFC enabled function modules. the difference between RFc and BAPI are business objects. You create business objects and those are then registered in your BOR (Business Object Repository) which can be accessed outside the SAP system by using some other applications (Non-SAP) such as VB or JAVA. in this case u only specify the business object and its method from external system in BAPI there is no direct system call. while RFC are direct system call Some BAPIs provide basic functions and can be used for most SAP business object types. These BAPIs should be implemented the same for all business object types. Standardized BAPIs are easier to use and prevent users having to deal with a number of different BAPIs. Whenever possible, a standardized BAPI must be used in preference to an individual BAPI.
IDOC type and IDOC. An Intermediate Document (IDOC) type represents the structure of the data associated with a message type (DEBMAS02 for message type DEBMAS — Customer Master, and WMMBID02 for message type WMMBXY— Goods Movements), while an IDOC is an object containing the data of a particular message type. IDOCs are data containers with intelligence built in. Each IDOC contains one and only one business object. For example, an IDOC of type SHPMNT01, message type SHPMNT, will contain data only of one Shipment Document. Generally, the architecture of an IDOC is independent of the message type by virtue of ALE’s ability to redefine it for any message type.

    Hello,
I need to found the best way to create or modify a BoM in SAP from an external system (throught SAP PI).
My SAP version is 4.7. I've searched and I've found the following, IDOCs, BAPIs and RFCs, but I'm not sure about the functionallity of each one, and if they solve my problem:

I am going through some material on implementing Ess/MSS in SAP ERP HCM and it somwhere says as the Service Key. For e.g. the Service KEy for Personal Dat aiView is EMPLOYEE_PERSINFO_PERSDATA05. Is this servie key is some backend table service where the data has been stored? And can I call this service key EMPLOYEE_PERSINFO_PERSDATA05 in some other application...say WD application if it's BAPI/RFC?
Please clarify this doubht..that will be really helpful.

Within this FM you can find the related FMs to read the Services.
And the table where you can find the entries is V_T7XSSSER
To find the exact table navigate to below location
    IMG-> Cross Application Components -> Homepage Framework->Services->Define Services-> Define

  • What are IDOC and ALE?

We are getting a new system that will be interfacing to SAP via IDOC and or ALE
I am required to quickly reply back as far as what will be required from a BASIS side if they will interface using IDOCS and ALEs
    Thank YOU and kind Regards!
    M.

    Hi Maria,
Application Link Enabling (ALE) is a mechanism or u can say that it's a tool for the exchange of business data between loosely-coupled R/3 applications built by customers of SAP, the enterprise resource management program. ALE provides SAP customers with a program distribution model and technology that enables them to interconnect programs across various platforms and systems. That means that ALE can integrate business processes between R/3 Systems and non-R/3 systems as well as between R/3 Systems.
There are three layers in the ALE system:
    a)     application services,
    b)     distribution services, and
    c)     communication services.
The vehicle for data transfer is called an IDoc (intermediate document), which is a container for the application data to be transmitted.
After a user performs an SAP transaction, one or more IDocs are generated in the sending database and passed to the ALE communication layer. The communication layer performs a Remote Function Call (RFC), using the port definition and RFC destination specified by the customer model. The IDoc is transmitted to the receiver, which may be an R/3, R/2, or some external system. If the data is distributed from a master system, the same transaction performed by the sender will be performed by the receiving system, using the information contained in the IDoc.
Changes made to fields in master data tables can be set to trigger distribution of the changes to slave systems, so that multiple database servers can update the same information simultaneously. IDocs carry information directly between SAP systems. In order to communicate with a non-SAP system, an IDoc is first transmitted to an intermediary system that translates the data to a format that will be understood by the receiver. Return data also passes through the translating system, where it is again encapsulated into an IDoc.
Now comes to ur 2nd query basis guys duties over IDOCS & ALE
    a)Creating the RFC
    b)monitoring different layers over ALE
    c)Archiving IDOCS (when required)
    d)use the Idoc display tool(we02)
e)use the Idoc Search tool (we09)
    f)use the Status Monitor Tool(bd87)
    g)Troubleshooting the Inbound Idocsu2026.

  • ALE/IDOC and RFC/BAPI Integration Scenarios with SAP DS for ESA v3

    Hi,
we are planning two PoCs of Integration Plattforms. One of our major requirement set is SAP Integration into our existing SOA.
Because we also have R/3 4.7 Systems in production, we are planning to test ALE/IDOC and RFC/BAPI Integration scenarios with these Integration Plattforms.
    My question is:
We are looking for are smart solution to get a SAP Test Environment, where we can test ALE/IDOC und RFC/BAPI Integration scenarios.
It is possible to do this with SAP DS for ESA v3 or shall we better use IDES for that purpose?
    Best regards,
    Steven

    Hi Abhishek,
This is our scenario. We are doing an integration of SAP HR r/3 system with the CRM system. We need housing information details of the employees which we have in custom infotype 9310 in SAP HR system and we need those details in the CRM system. So am planning out for an ALE/IDOC approach for the integration and gonna  maintain the 9310 details in a custom table. In the CRM system, we gonna build a BOL layer for accessing the 9310 details. Also i'm preparing a HLD for this process. I wanna read and go through few same HLD's before i submit my proposal to my client. Please suggest me and help me out.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi friends,  IDOC and RFC are sap related.but idoc is in abap stack rfc is

1)IDOC and RFC are sap related.but idoc is in abap stack rfc is in java stack.what is difference between two.?

    hi ganga,
The IDoc adapter is used by SAP systems to connect to a centrally configured Integration Engine using IDocs
which is properitory to SAP integration
so it doesn't need the Adapter engine.
    refer:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/ab/bdb13b00ae793be10000000a11402f/content.htm
The Adapter engine is working on the J2EE Engine.
RFC Adapter is provided by the AdapterEngine.
So RFC needs Java Runtime where IDoc doesn't.

u can check the below the material also
    what is BAPI?
BAPI stands for Business API(Application Program Interface).
I have answered this question before..
A BAPI is remotely enabled function module ie it can be invoked from remote programs like standalone JAVA programs, web interface etc..
You can make your function module remotely enabled in attributes of Function module but
A BAPI are standard SAP function modules provided by SAP for remote access. Also they are part of Businees Objest Repository(BOR).
The following standardized BAPIs are provided:
Reading instances of SAP business objects
GetList ( ) With the BAPI GetList you can select a range of object key values, for example, company codes and material numbers.
The BAPI GetList() is a class method.
GetDetail() With the BAPI GetDetail() the details of an instance of a business object type are retrieved and returned to the calling program. The instance is identified via its key. The BAPI GetDetail() is an instance method. BAPIs that can create, change or delete instances of a business object type
The following BAPIs of the same object type have to be programmed so that they can be called several times within one transaction. For example, if, after sales order 1 has been created, a second sales order 2 is created in the same transaction, the second BAPI call must not affect the consistency of the sales order 2. After completing the transaction with a COMMIT WORK, both the orders are saved consistently in the database.
    Create( ) and CreateFromData! ( )
The BAPIs Create() and CreateFromData() create an instance of an SAP business object type, for example, a purchase order. These BAPIs are class methods.
    Change( )
The BAPI Change() changes an existing instance of an SAP business object type, for example, a purchase order. The BAPI Change () is an instance method.
Delete( ) and Undelete( ) The BAPI Delete() deletes an instance of an SAP business object type from the database or sets a deletion flag.
The BAPI Undelete() removes a deletion flag. These BAPIs are instance methods.
Cancel ( ) Unlike the BAPI Delete(), the BAPI Cancel() cancels an instance of a business object type. The instance to be cancelled remains in the database and an additional instance is created and this is the one that is actually canceled. The Cancel() BAPI is an instance method.
Add<subobject> ( ) and Remove<subobject> ( ) The BAPI Add<subobject> adds a subobject to an existing object inst! ance and the BAPI and Remove<subobject> removes a subobject from an object instance. These BAPIs are instance methods.

  • What are BAPI's

    Dear All,
Could you tell me what are BAPI? and how are they related to RFC? How do BAPI's work?
    Regards,
    Ashish

    Hi Ashish,
    Short Intro:
BAPI wil work as a function module only just tht its an RFC can be called by external systems.
BAPIs are created as methods of business objects.if u goto SWO1 transaction and give a BO say BUS2038 you will see some methods in them. They are all BAPIs.
If you goto transaction BAPI,you can find all the methods created by SAP and impelmented as Function modules and they are all RFCs.But an RFC is not necessarily a BAPI.It can be a normal function module in SAP whose attribute has been set to RFC,which means u r making it available to be called by external systems
like our wrapper BAPIs,are simple RFCs and not BAPIs
This can provide you all information around BAPI's

  • What are  import parameters for bapi

please tell me what are the minimum  fields i  has to pass for bapi
    " BAPI_SALESDOCUMENT_CHANGE ".
if  possible  give me with example
Moderator message: please (re)search yourself first.
Edited by: Thomas Zloch on Dec 8, 2010 9:07 AM

    Hello,
It will all depend on what you need to change in the sales order.
For example, if you want to change something in the header only, then you need to pass ORDER_HEADER_IN and ORDER_HEADER_INX.
Similarly, if you want to change something only in the sales items then you need to pass the value in SALESDOCUMENT, ITEM_IN and ITEM_INX.
So, it will all depend on your need.
But, always pass a table in RETURN so that you get to know whether BAPI has executed successfully or there is some error in the processing.
    Hope it helps.

    Himanshu
