What can I do if kernel_task is using a lot of memory?

Is it safe if I quit the process, and what would happen if I do it. Also I have a 4GB memory what can I do to use less? Thank you.

Some processes are critical, but many can be interrupted without any problem.
You can monitor your ongoing processes by going to Applications/Utiltities/Activity Monitor; pay particular attention to Disk Activity and Network. To interrupt a process, highlight the process, and tap "Quit Processes." This will interrupt or stop the runaway process.

This looks like the solution, but I cannot get the commands to work. When I enter the command to make a command of /et/rc.server using the root login, it says:
-sh: $: command not found
How should I enter this command using terminal? thanks, I am really new at this, but I am doing my best to learn. As an aside, is there a site that helps getting started with terminal?

You can make the following change to /etc/rc.server to improve performance in this situation. This is recommended only if your server has 2 GB, 3 GB, or 4 GB of RAM.
Make a copy of /etc/rc.server with this command:
$ sudo cp /etc/rc.server /etc/rc.server.bak
As the root user, open /etc/rc.server in the text editor of your choice.
Locate this line in /etc/rc.server:
sysctl -w kern.maxnbuf=90000
Change the number 90000 to 20000, so that the line reads:
sysctl -w kern.maxnbuf=20000
Save the changes made to /etc/rc.server.
Restart the server.

Hi thanks for the encouragement. It's not that the severs are "swamped", iOS 7 has been successfully installed.
I can't access the apps list in iTunes because it *****
down. Its pretty frustrating because many of my apps require me to manually transfer files into iTunes first to view
them. Not sure if the servers being swamped is an issue for me, unless they release a bug fix through another version of iTunes.
Has anyone else had this problem? My iPad is pretty useless unless I can access my app list in iTunes....

When I regist function to lua,use a lot of memory

Just registed about 1000 functions,The memory of running swf is about 1.8G.
Then the swf exit without any exceptions.The same code run at win7,just need 100M.

I'm not sure what you mean by registering classes and functions. Have you tried running Adobe Scout on the SWF, it might give more info about what is taking up so much memory: http://gaming.adobe.com/technologies/scout/

SystemUIServer is using a lot of memory

My systemUIServer is using a lot of memory like 300MBof memory. I can quit the serives which is relaucnched since it's a launchd and will gradually go back to eating up memory. I also have noticed the LoginWindow process eats up a lot of memory. Does anyone know what could be causing this

Safari 2.0.4 - Uses a lot of memory ??

I own an Intel iMac MA200.
I noticed after Safari's 2.0.4 update that it uses a lot of memory, sometimes even as much as 200MB
The cure I found is to restart Safari.
Sometimes, I need to even Force Quit it.
When I finish using my iMac, and close the Safari windows but let it keep running (red button), go to sleep, and in the morning check how much memory it takes, it's more then 100MB,
I suspect there is a memory leak with Safari 2.0.4
My OS X version is 10.4.8.
I wonder if there is a known problem with Safari, and if there will be a new update released soon (2.0.5 ?) that will solve this problem, because I didn't have this problem with 2.0.3 .

They seem very memory friendly and Intel Optimized.

I really hope Apple will fix the memory leak and Gmail fix there new interface (the little option button next to the new reply deosn't work - even with WebKit nightly) ASAP - sience SafariBlock and Saft doesn't work well with WebKit Nightly.

Flash player 11.3.300.262 is using a lot of memory

Since updating flash a few days ago the plugin has been using a lot more memory than usual. Normally it uses between 150MB to 200MB, but now i have seen it use up to 900MB.
I've noticed that memory use increases by 5MB or more when navigating through a video until i have to terminate the plugin because of the ridiculous amount of memory used.

Upon computer boot up, Task Manager shows it is using 45mb, and after researching this topic using IE, 10 minutes later it now shows it is using 74 mg, although it did go down to 33 mg a few minutes later, then back up to 51 mg a few minutes after that.
Is there a way to keep it from using so much memory when the printer is turned off?.

To change the passcode if you have forgotten it the only option is to Restore your iPhone to Factory settings by connecting it to iTunes on your computer. And you can try the below steps to Reset your iPhone settings without need of any passcode.

First Make sure the Battery of your iPhone is Charged and then press and Hold the On/Off switch (On top of your iPhone) and the Home Button (Button at the bottom of your iPhone screen). There is nothing you can do without doing a restore via the recovery mode. Since you have iOS 7, if you activated Find My Phone in Settings > iCloud, you can login to your iCloud account, https://www.icloud.com from a computer, and then do a remote wipe of the iPhone...that will return it to factory condition and all contents will be erased.

Kernel_task keeps using more and more memory, threads. How do I fix this?

In Activity Monitor, kernel_task (PID 0, User root) doesn't take up much CPU, but has a huge number of threads open. It also has nearly 400 MB of real Memory, and over 4 and a half GB of virtual memory! This is slowing my computer down immensly. I tried restarting the computer, but it didn't help. Any tips on how to fix this?

Large amounts of virtual memory are not abnormal. All that means is that the system has pushed a bunch of recently used data off onto disk to free up ram for other processes. If the processes you're running collectively need more active memory than you have installed in the machine or if you're boot volume is almost full things can slow down dramatically, but otherwise the size of virtual memory is not all that relevant.
pid 0 on my machine has 95 threads open, 700 Mb real memory, but only 49 Mb virtual memory. 4.5 Gb of virtual memory sounds excessive and my guess at a cause would be some third-party app or plugin or some such with a memory leak. As a diagnostic, try restarting in Safe Mode and see if the problem is still there. If it goes away in safe mode, then you'll to have to tell what 3P processes you normally run.

ExtraSmall instance using a lot of memory.

I designed an application with several Cloud Services, and some of them I'm trying to use ExtraSmall instances because they are very small and only do some basic data services. But almost all services throws me this error at activation:
memory gates checking failed because the free memory (373817344 bytes) is less than 5% of total memory.
Checking out the memory used in the Cloud Service instance, WITHOUT activating the service, it goes from 86% to 92% of memory used, so it easily goes to 95% or more, activating the service.
What should I expect in terms of free memory of a ExtraSmall instance?
If it's in that range (86% to 91%) I think that they're almost useless.
What can I optimize to increase free memory in a new ExtraSmall instance to have enough to run my services?
