What can I do if MacBook Pro won't turn on but the keyboard lights up ?

Hi, my MacBook won't start but the keyboard lights up, if anybody has any ideas what I can do to get it to turn on, I'd be forever grateful,
Tracey

Try ooting into your Mavericks Recovery partition - by holding down the command and R keys shilst booting.
Once at the Recovery screen, open Disk Utility, slect your hard drive icon on the left of the screen (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you'e renamed it) and click on the "Verify" button. If you get green text telling you that everything seems to be O.K., just reboot. If you get red text telling you that the drive needs to be repaired, click on the "Repair" button. If repair is successful, you should be able to bott normally.
Call back with results.

    Most likely.
You can try to boot from the Install DVD for your Mac and run AHT from there if it boots.
If not it sounds like it is time to take it to Apple for repair.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If this doesn't work then you will need to erase the drive and install Snow Leopard from scratch:
    Erase and Install Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. When completed quit DU and complete the Snow Leopard installation.

  • After a liquid spill my laptop won't turn on but the sleep light goes off with a beep every 5 seconds

It's been 2 weeks since I spilled tea onto the keyboard of my MacBook Pro- now after plugging it in the sleep light lights up and beeps every 5 seconds but will not start up- it has been upside down and powered down since spill

Take it to Apple and ask them to find out what has been damaged by the tea.
The longer you wait the worst the problems will get as the corrsion from the liquid continues to develop.

  • My MacBook pro 2009, won't turn on but the indicator light does.

Hey guys, I am computer illiterate as far as hardware goes, so I hope someone can help me.  I have a 2009 MacBook pro, and today was the first day I have ever had a problem with it.  It won't turn on, however the little power indicator light does come on and it stays on.  The battery indicator is green.  The keyboard isn't working because when I press on the caps lock button it doesnt turn green.  I tried to charge my IPhone to it to see if it was getting enough power, and the IPhone didn't charge.  So I'm guessing that my MacBook isn't getting enough power, could it be this simple or more severe.

It sounds like your MBP doesn't produce a startup chime that is an indication that the POST, Power On Self Test, has failed which means that it has hardware problems that are serious enough to prevent POST from completing successfully.
You are either going to have to do some serious troubleshooting to find out what part of the MBP has failed or take it to Apple and ask them to fix it for you. They will give you an estimate after they see it so that you can decide if you are going to have it fixed or not.

  • MacBook Pro won't turn on, but hear fan noise

My MacBook Pro, (2010 I think) won't turn on.
The power cord is working.  I've tried two cords and get a a green indicator light when power cord is plugged in to computer.
With the power cord still plugged in, when I press the button to check the battery charge level all of the lights flash green.
With the power cord still plugged in my white sleep light on the front of the laptop is flashing.
When I remove the charger from the computer all of the battery charge indicator lights flash once.
When I remove the power cord and press the button to check the battery charge level nothing happens, no lights at all.  White sleep light doesn't flash either.
When power cord is plugged in and I press the power button I can hear the computer trying to turn on, or something is working away inside.  I don't hear the chime tho so it isn't starting.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you, Lori

  • My macbook air won't turn on and the led light on the cord doesn't light up

I can't get my macbook air to turn on and the cord light won't go on, either. It was not dead last night when I shut it down . . . any ideas?

    Hello srsymington,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To troubleshoot this issue where your MacBook Air will not power on, I'd like you to please reset the SMC as directed below.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • MacBook Pro won't turn on even with green light on charger

i have a 2010 MacBook Pro. The battery has been permanently dead for years but it still turned on as long as I had the charger connected. Eventually the charger stopped working so I bought a new one. The light is green on the charger but the MacBook won't turn on now. I tried that reset thing as well as opening up the bottom and disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and that didn't worn either. I pressed the button on the side and there's green flashing lights so its definitely getting power it just won't turn on. I don't know what else to do at this point.

If so, a new battery may be the cure but bring the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a definitive evaluation first.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro won't turn on. Flashing charger light. Please

I have had my macbook pro for less than a month and it will not turn on. When i plug in the charger it does one of 3 things; A) the little light on the charger won't turn on. B) it comes on orange and then after a period of a couple of minutes slowly fades out and then back on as green followed by flashing green. or C) It simply won't come on. The computer will not turn on during any of these instances. And when I check the battery by pressing the button on the side none of the 5 lights turn on.
I have tried it with the charger for my other macbook and still doesn't work. And both the chargers work on that computer. So i know it is an issue with the macbook itself.
The sleeper light never turns on at all either. I hope the battery didn't burn out.
Is there anybody out there who could please help me?
    Shed some light on this...

Since you've had this for such a short time, I would take it to the Apple store and let them deal with it.
    Do a back up first!

  • My MacBook Pro won't turn on after the new update.

I left my MacBook Pro out and open for it to update and install the new software. When it finished, I connected my iPhone 5s with the laptop via the USB cable. And it completely shut down. And it won't turn on, restart, nor charge.

    Did you try this?
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • MacBook Pro won't turn on. Odd flashing light.

    Hi Everyone,
My wife's MacBook Pro has failed to start. Strangely the button to open the lid on front flashes.
The computer recently had a new mother board put in. Feburary. Bit of a waste of money on and old mac. But there you go.
Now we can't get it to turn on.
Disk drive macs a sound but screen doesn't even turn grey.
Can't seem to reset PRAM. Get no chimes at all.
    Any suggestions?
We live in Middle East, So would be a problem getting it to a Apple Store.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Jamie

I have the exact same problem. It just started yesterday. I was able to start it up in Safe Mode by pressing Shift right after the start up lights went on. Usually you would do it right before teh chime but I had the same issue as you. It would not chime. I had to try it like 20 times before I hit teh right timing. I suggest you do the same while you are temporarily trying to use your computer. Safe mode is not idea as services aren't started and permissions are not full. So some applications aren't running very well in safe mode. I am taking it into the Apple Store tomorrow. I'll see how it goes and let you know.
