What can I do to get back context-sensitive tools?

FYI: I'm on a PC which I very recently upgraded to new processor (i7-4770K), motherboard and added 4G memory to bring it up to 16. I then installed Win8.1 that wouldn't install with the older equipment. I'm using Premiere Pro CC.
PP had problems. First, if I used the original user account I'd get no audio, all audio tracks red and apparently some Dolby licensing issue that Adobe threw at me despite my using a fully-licensed and activated product.
Ultimately, between Microsoft and Adobe, it was determined that the user account was diseased and caused that so I made a new one.
Somehow, the ability of the active tool on the mouse pointer to change depending on context (for instance, when placed on a cut in a multi-camera target timeline it would change to the "rolling-edit" tool). Another symptom: If I inadvertently create a through-edit (say, going Cam1-Cam1 instead of changing shots) I would see a white "bow-tie" showing the error and could easily join the shots. (To be fair, the option to join the shots IS on the menu when right-clicking; it's just the outer signal of the "bow-tie" that's missing). TS doesn't seem to know what switch turned these useful features off and thus can't figure out how I can turn them back on.
TS seems to have no clue. They wontonly renamed folders (the 7.0 folder in AppData\Adobe\Premiere Pro) went to old user accounts, created new ones, tried to use the Admin account. Nothing brings back PPro to its proper state. I'd love any feedback from other users who have experienced this, especially if you also figured out how to get OUT of it. Thanks...

It didn't hurt that I showed him that it worked with the modifier key. What's annoying is that it CHANGED without my having changed it...and TS went all around the barn renaming directories etc.
The most difficult was finding and re-installing my .kys file. Has anyone thought to do a feature request for being able to put a .kys file where YOU want it rather than some arcane location? It seems like in other locations the engineers have been able to create this amazing thing called...A "BROWSE" BUTTON!!! Hey! Why can't we have one on the custom keyboard shortcuts dialog, along with "save as..." and "delete"?
Again, thanks for your help on this. I wonder if, had I known about the modifier key behavior, Level 1 or 2 might have been able to catch the problem.

I have an iPod Touch 3rd Generation, and I put a new passcode on it 3 days ago. All of a sudden, it did NOT recongize the passcode that was working the past few days as the passcode nor the previous one. What can I do to get back in without lost of info?

I do not want to restore it, as there is infomation on it I need. I haven't backed it up in a while(I know that's my fault), but this is the first time this has happened.

- restore from an existing backup
- Contact a data recovery company

Then restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased. Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode if necessary to allow the restore.

Your contacts are helpd on the server, so if you sign out from your iCloud account and sign into another one they will disappear. If you sign back into the original account they will reappear.

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...

Hmmm
Using a computer without a back up is, frankly, like driving without a seat belt. You'll be fine - unless there's a problem. If there is a problem then you'll be rather worse off than if you were wearing one.
Updating software - any software, apps, OS, plug-ins, anything - without a back up is like driving drunk and blindfolded without a seatbelt... The same warning applies but you're much more likely to have an issue at upgrading and installing time than other times.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

Given you have a backup you may want to think about erasing the hard drive and reinstalling Snow Leopard then restore your backup.

What can I do to get my photos back to full resolution and fix them?

I imported photos two nights ago and when it popped up "delete from ___ drive?" I clicked delete like normal. Then my mac took longer to save and such, then iPhoto quit unexpectedly. My photos were off the disk and now I couldn't find them in my mac. I found them yesterday morning but now they are in poor quality and not the exact res. that my camera is. What can I do to get them back to their full photo value?
Some that were not imported were still on my disk; I imported them, but kept them on the disk and they are perfectly fine. Just as a side note.

Make sure you have iPhoto's Advanced prefs set to copy photo into the library during import.

If that check box is checked then make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select options #1, #2 and #6.
Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If that checkbox is not unchecked then you were running a "referenced" library at the time of import and the original files are gone as they were on the memory card at the time of import. You can try running MediaRECOVER to try to recover the photos from the memory card. You can run it in demo mode to see if it will do the job before having to purchase it.

I D/L'd a trial version of LR 5 and lost all my catalog and collections in LR 4. What can I do to get them back?

Yesterday I D/L'd a trial version of LR 5.6 and during installation it seemed to be copying my catalog from my LR 4.4. Now nearly all of my catalog and all my collections in LR 4 have disappeared. What has happened to them andhow do I get them back. The original photos seem to still be available in the myphotos directory on the computer, but without any of my lightroom editing.
