What do i do when my mac crashes?

my  2 year old macbook pro crashed for the first time and when i restart it it keeps on freezing and all of my files have disappeared from my desktop, since this is the first time this has happened i dont know how to fix it

If you're running OS X 10.6 or earlier, boot to either the original OS X CDs that came with the system, or an OS X retail disk.  Insert the disk and boot while holding the C key down (or after inserting the disc hold down the alt/option key while booting and choose the CD). Bring up Disk Utility from Utilities on the menu bar, and repair the hard drive. While there, repair permissions too. Does the repair hard drive complete without error?
You can also run the Apple hardware test to see if there is are any hardware issues. Run the extended test, which can take over an hour.

It could be right, how is the drive connected... interface wise?
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this is going on.

  • What does it mean when you computer crashes and when you turn it back on it shows you a blank blue screen with a little folder and a question mark in the middle?

What does it mean when you computer crashes and when you turn it back on it shows you a blank blue screen with a little folder and a question mark in the middle? It's a old imac from 1997.

I don't have original discs that it came with.
Then you still can use the second option with the keyboard combo I posted, called "resetting the PRAM."
Also when you way hold the c key down do you mean turn computer off and turn back on holding the c key?
Yes, or you can simply restart. As you don't have the CDs, this isn't on the plate any more.
The internal backup battery is not expensive and, in most iMacs is user-replacable. If yours has a tray-loading optical drive like this one:
it takes a major teardown to replace the internal battery. If this is the case, you'd be better off to leave the computer plugged in all the time; that eliminates the main reason for having a working battery.
If it has a slot-loading optical drive like this one:
things are much easier. The battery is visible through the RAM access door on the bottom of the computer case. The manual:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iMacG3_2000UserManual.PDF
has sketches of how to access the RAM and therefore the backup battery. Unfortunately, the pdf on the manual goes up sideways on-screen and the RAM instructions are pretty deep into the manual. It's probably easier to scroll (for a while) to the section on adding RAM and print the applicable pages.
When you work on the battery, some sort of non-conductive pliers or large tweezer or forceps help unless you have tiny fingers. Make sure to note the polarity of the old battery and install the new one in the same orientation.
The battery itself is readily available. If price is no oblect, you can get it for a small rasom from Radio Shack Store ("Tandy" outside the US) as part number 23-026.
Online, they are dirt-cheap even after adding shipping. I buy backup batteries form this outfit:

  • I would like to import the .abcdp files from my old, restored HD (was running mountain lion when the mac crashed) to the addressbook of my new mac (10.9.5)

I would like to import the .abcdp files from my old, restored HD (was running mountain lion when the mac crashed) to the addressbook of my new mac (10.9.5).
    Please advise.

I don't have access to one.
I don't understand why the new address book is not backwards compatible with the data from former OS X versions.
In 10.8. preview was still able to read the files although it was already impossible to import them into the address book. But Why?

  • What do you do when the system crashes ?

    hi experts,
i want answers for the following questions..
1.What do you do when the system crashes in the middle of a BDC batch
    session?
2.What do you do with errors in BDC batch sessions? and how to proceed further..
    with regards ,
    James...
    valuable answers will be rewarded...

    HI,
There are two ways to tackle this issue.
    <b>Method..1</b>
Thru se16 check the table(s) being updated, preferably the last table as per your code. If you have say 1600 records in the flat file check for the upload of the 1600 th record.. If not ok, check for the upload of the 800 th record(N-N/2), if OK go & check
N+(N/2) th record  if not ok goto N-(N/2) th record where N is the curent record number in the flat file . In about 4 or five checks you will converge on the last uploaded record.
Now from the flat file, remove the lines till the upload is ok & then re-run BDC.
Even here a record may be uploaded partially which has to be manually edited thru se16.
    <b>Method..2</b>
Have a zee table for uploads. Just after uploading a record into the sap table, fill this zeetable with few fields of each the records. In an abort situation this table will tell the story of the update status. Take care to empty this table occasionally.
    Regards
    Gaurav

  • What do i do when my mac wont boot at all

i have a 15" macbook pro and it will not load up, what do i do PLEASE HELP ME

What do you mean? What does it do when you try to turn it on? If it does absolutely nothing, even when plugged in, then you have a hardware problem and will need to contact Apple for service.
If it does something, let us know what that something is so we can better advise you.

  • What does it mean when my Mac won't turn on and it's charging low?

My MacBook suddenly just turned off and won't turn on anymore. There's just a blank screen and when I charge it, the green light is low.

Resetting SMC could solve the problem.

  • What can I do when my Mac doesn't open and there's an interrogation point?

My Mac Book Pro doesn't open. There is an interrogation point in the center of the screen. What is going on and what can I do?

Thanks Phil0124. I was able to mount the ISO onto the DVD from my disk utility but now I face another problem. Bootcamp recognized the disc and started to install Windows, but stopped and gave me the following error message: "your disc could not be partitioned An error occurred while partitioning the disk".

  • What do I do when my mac won't start up? I put it in sleep mode after installing the latest OS Lion update and now it won't open up.

Near new mac pro retina, updated OS last night, re-started, finished my work &amp; put it into sleep mode. On power, &amp; hooked up to Thunderbolt screen. Got up this morning and it won't boot up. Is there anything I can do myself, or is this a shop problem?

Sounds like a #1 SMC or #2 PRAM reset is in order.

  • What can I do when PSE 6 crashes when opening?

My PSE 6 and Bridge crashes as soon as I get them open. I don't know where to start

Have you just upgraded your operating system? We need more details.

  • What do I do when system preferances crashed and was then deleted from my computer to get it back

    yes

Is it gone from the Dock, or is it there but with a question mark? To be sure it is really deleted, check Apple Menu -> System Preferences, or look in the Applications Folder. Or do a Spotlight search for it. If it's there, but either not in Dock or has a question mark in the Dock, drag Q mark one off Dock and it should poof away. Then drag again from Applications Folder to Dock.
But if it's really gone, you will have to reinstall OS X to get it back, I'm pretty sure.

  • Changes in Dock are lost when Mac crashes

Is there a way to save changes in the Dock so that they are retained through a crash/restart? I've made a number of changes and, if I do not do a manual Restart to cause the changes to be saved, I must redo all of the changes if/when the Mac crashes.
I'm mostly concerned with new Apps or other items being added to the Dock. I add them, and if my Mac crashes I must re-add them once I Restart.

First off, your Mac shouldn't be crashing often. For the most part, I leave my PB on 24/7 and I can't remember the last time I experienced any type of crash so if this occurs often, this problem needs to be addressed and resolved first.
How often does this occur and what type of crash?
Does the crash including a error/warning message provided in several languages indicating you need to restart the computer?

  • Mac crashes; Firefox 33.02 FORGETS all tabs (Safari doesn't!)

    MacBook Air (mid-2011), OS 10.10, 4 gig
When the Mac crashes - increasingly frequently, sigh - Firefox forgets all open windows and current tabs... which is VERY annoying - especially as Safari DOESN'T.
This is so infuriating that I'm about to give up on Firefox, after many years.

This problem started for me immediately after the firefox reboot after the last update. 6.0.2

Hi viish and welcome to the discussions
It would be worth checking that the memory chips are bedded into their sockets properly - see the instruction booklet that came with the machine on how to remove the memory card.
The other cause could be the Graphics Processor itself and that is a job for an Apple trained technician.

  • Why Mac crashes when I run the clean speech ring of osx and then run the RestoreTime Machine?

Why Mac crashes when I run the clean speech ring of osx and then run the RestoreTime Machine? Could it be that I run restore the setup from a usb drive. I've done thisbefore and when it has not been a problem.
Does anyone have a good answer on this so I'm happy.

    What is that?
    run the RestoreTime Machine?
    What are you restoring?
Do you mean a full system restore?  Or something else?
When does your Mac crash -- during the restore, when you try to start up afterwards, or ?
