What does Rosetta do to Snow Leopard?

When in use, do you have to close all Rosetta apps to get back 10.6 maximum functionality? or restart? Does Rosetta rob us of anything when is use or active? etc
Thanks

It depends what you mean by that. Rosetta translates PPC code into intel, so it will take more resources than the same app written in native intel binary. It will use more memory and CPU. Part of the memory used will probably remain used even after you quit all Rosetta apps, but if the memory is needed, it will shift to virtual memory.
yes i understand it would take more resources. Puzzled by "memory used will probably remain used even after you quit all Rosetta apps". Why and how? Is it returned after sleep? start up? enough to be concerned?
Any other caveats?

According to Roaring Apps, there is a version of Protools compatible with Lion.  But you may need Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to buy either Lion or ML on MAS.   It looks like you need to get up-to-date with your OS and the apps too.

  • What Are Application Keywords in Snow Leopard?

I recently updated to Snow Leopard, and I've been trying out the expanded syntax coloring. However, I cannot find one example of code colored as an application keyword.
I set the color for application keywords to bright red so it would stand out. I have hundreds of AppleScripts to test, and I have opened about half of them. Not once was any code colored as an application keyword. There were classes, properties, enumerations, parameters, commands, etc., but no application keywords.
So, what are application keywords in Snow Leopard? I thought I knew, but now I have no idea.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Brett

Thanks for the info. The 10.6 changes documentation says:
*Syntax coloring for scripts now has much more detail: commands, parameters, classes, properties, and enumerated values all have their own category now, instead of sharing the “application keywords” category, and may be formatted differently depending on whether they come from an application or a scripting addition.*
Does that mean all application keywords are now in different categories? If so, why is there an application keywords option in the syntax coloring prefs?
    Thanks

  • When Lion officially comes out from the Mac App Store, I understand that I can just buy it from there. However, will the laptops have Lion automatically? Or does it come with Snow leopard still.

When Lion officially comes out from the Mac App Store, I understand that I can just buy it from there. However, will the laptops have Lion automatically? Or does it come with Snow leopard still.

The ones sold that day will come with Snow Leopard most likely but they will be able to get a free upgrade to LIon if they apply within 30 days. Hardware coming through the supply chain from the day of the announcement will have Lion installed so it depends what stock people have to move before buyers see those.

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Does LiveType work with Snow Leopard?

I recently updated to Snow Leopard and the latest Final Cut Studio. When I went to open LiveType, I got the following message:
    LiveType quit unexpectedly.
Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
Does LiveType work with Snow Leopard? Do I trash my preferences or reinstall the program from my original version of Final Cut Studio?
    Any ideas?

Am I the only one who feels like that is ridiculous? Apple provides the possibility to upgrade to the new Final Cut Studio from the original version of Final Cut Studio, but in so doing, disables a program that was working fine before the upgrade, and doesn't provide any avenue to fix the problem? Is that really the way things work in the world of Apple computing? Does that compute?
I hope that this is not right...
For some reason this reminds me of Thoreau...
    "Simplify, simplify."
This seems to be the antithesis of "Think Different" doesn't it?
Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.
But in Apple's world, if you missed update number two then that's all you're going to get is an empty canvas, because the program used to put print on your canvas is no longer available. And if you go looking for another option, like for instance if you take their slogan literally:
    They’re not fond of rules.
Then what is Apple going to do about it? I think if you read the news it's pretty obvious what Apple's going to do about it.
Is it any wonder that they dismissed their slogan, because it did not fit in with their business plan.
    Any comments?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Today's Security Update 2012-001 is POISON to PowerPC/Rosetta apps  on Snow leopard!

First time I've ever had a routine Security Update cause me problems with OS-X, ever.
Today's Security Update 2012-001   is absolutely crashing my PowerPC/Rosetta apps on Snow Leopard .
Every time to try to OPEN... SAVE or Save as ...PRINT  , you will get an instant hard crash.
I still use AppleWorks 6 for all my business correspondence , and have quite a few other PPC apps.
    This security update is poison.
Other forums, such as Macintouch , are reporting this. it seems to be affecting almost everyone , regardless of hardware system.
It appears enything and everything PPC will crash , even Apple's own older PPC/Rosetta apps .
SU 2012-001 for Snow Leopard obviously was not tested well, if at all.
Apple MUST fix this ASAP, no matter how much they want to divorce Rosetta and PPC technology for the OS. There is no excuse for dispatching a system software update that  has such damaging issues.
I have no need for Lion 10.7 whatsoever , but I do need my Rosetta apps every day... and Apple just crashed them.

Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
If you have TM, or a option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.
If not, c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions,  (do not format or erase!!) and simply re--install 10.6
Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8, it should not include the security update at this time (second pass it might show) because it was just released and they might need to pull it. (they need to pull it)
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that installed kext files into OS X, you'll know, they won't work.
If you get gray screen, hold the shift key and update your installed software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

  • Have MobileMe account, have 2008 iMac, have rosetta apps, have snow leopard, don't want Lion, have to have iCloud after June?

    Hello All,
I have a MBP running Lion and its fine. I have an iPhone 4, iPad, and a family pack MobileMe account. I have a 2008 iMac that has Final Cut Pro and several other rosetta apps. The iMac is running snow leopard and I don't have any issues to complain about. Since I will be forced to move to iCloud in June if I choose to keep my account I am trying to figure out how to procede with my iMac. I find it annoying that Apple is in a sense forcing MobileMe subscribers to purchase an OS update (Lion $69.00) or at worst a newer computer (Lion will not run on pre-core 2 duo) if we want to "sync" our devices and continue to pay for mobileme services. On top of that, by forcing people to update to Lion to get iCloud, they are forcing people to lose support for any rosetta applications that they have an investment in.
I know about the rosetta install on Lion trick - (installing rosetta on a Lion machine from a snow leopard disc). I was lucky to have a snow leopard disc, so I could install rosetta on my MBP to have support for Final Cut Pro 6.
So, is there any hope of sync services with snow leopard on my iMac while moving my family MobileMe account to iCloud? So far, there seems to be alot of problems with iCloud syncing from what I have read. So in order to keep everything in sync (contacts, iCal, mail, etc.) with iCloud on all my devices (iPhone, MBP, iMac) I will have to buy a Lion install drive for the iMac and re-install rosetta and re-install all those applications as well....
    Any thoughts ?

Consider running your Adobe and AppleWorks software in Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) installed in Parallels in Lion or Mt. Lion:

  • Airporter does not work after snow leopard upgrade

I upgraded my old macbook to snow leopard, and the Time Capsule can not detect the disk drive on the Airporter.  The laptop has no problem using airporter to get to the internet, and the airport utility can see the disk drive.  After the install of snow leopard, I saw the time capsule, and it asked if I wanted the file recovered from the time capsule. This seemed to work perfectly, and made the upgrade painless except my time capsule does not work anymore.

I have the metadata.mds.plist but I do not have the Spotlight.plist as well. Regarding a fix, I had a similar issue with Spotlight's index when I upgraded one of my iMacs. A clean install, properly resolved the issue. I'd be curious if a reinstall of Snow Leopard would take care of the issue, as the A&I feature isn't there anymore I've yet to determine what exactly the install of SL over SL would do. My understanding is that the A&I is performed, it's just not called as such.

  • I have a Macbook 10.5.8 (Intel Core 2 Duo) and I need to update the software. What software should I buy snow leopard, lion, maverick?

I need to update my Macbook as many applications do not run in my computer.
    It's a Macbook 10..5.8 Intel Core 2 Duo, with graphics X3100.
I don't want to loose money, so I need to know if I have to buy first the Snow Leopard and then going for the Lion or others, or if I can buy directly Lion...
    What would you recommend_
    Thank you!

Yes.  Neil's is the right approach.
In my view, Snow leopard is an excellent OS for that model comnputer.   You must remember that many programs that are part of Leopard and Snow Leopard would be lost if you went higher, and that is if you could go higher.
The DVD you will buy is 10.6.3 and will need updating to 10.6.8, plus the Combo updater to clear the needs for the best security.   Snow leopard does not appear to be supported now.

  • What operating system needed for snow leopard?

I have Power PC G5 10.5.8. It does not have itel.
Can I upgrade to snow leopard?
    It does not have itel.

You are at the max OS for you system (PowerPC). Anything higher requires an Intel processor, which cannot be retrofitted for what you'd pay for a working Intel Mac.

  • What's the difference between Snow Leopard and Leopard?

I really don't see a reason in buying Snow Leopard if all it does is make my mac faster by 2 seconds at everything.

You can do what I've been doing for the past few years. Run the old version until I have a need to get a new system, then it comes with the newer OS. If I find I like the newer OS on the new hardware, I may upgrade the previous hardware.
For me at least I've got a PowerMac G5 (running Tiger), a MacBook (started on Tiger, went to Leopard), a Mac mini (running Leopard and was the trigger for upgrading the MacBook), and now I have an iMac/i7 (Snow Leopard and thinking of upgrading everyone by 1 version).
There are lots of little improvments in Snow Leopard (I'm starting to notice some of them myself), but if you either do not need them, or do not wish to disrupt your current environment, then stay with your current Mac OS X version.
