What does 'sync mail' actually do?

When i hook my iphone up to the computer and itunes opens, what exactly does the 'sync mail' option do? i don't have that option checked when my wife connects her phone.

If you have any email accounts set up on your Mac's Mail app and you select to "sync mail" with the iPhone the accounts you select to sync will show up on the iPhone's Mail application also
It is not necessary to select to sync mail each time you sync your phone, once the email accounts are on the iPhone you can deselect to sync mail since the email settings (incoming and outgoing servers) are the only things that are synced

  • What does syncing mail really mean?

I've just started using ISync with my .mac account, telling it to copy the sync-able data (Calendar, Safari Bookmarks, Mail, etc.) from my MacBook Pro to my .mac account. The goal is to then have my old Powerbook synced and getting its data from that same .mac account -- thus, changes I make on the MacBook Pro should always be reflected on the Powerbook. So far that's working fine with Calendar; all appointments listed on the MacBook now show up on the Powerbook as well. But the mail app doesn't seem to work in the same way -- email recently sent or received on several POP accounts I set up on the MacBook Pro does not show up on the Powerbook after syncing, even though the mailbox accounts are the same on both computers. It seems like if ISync can sync individual appointments, it ought to be able to sync individual emails -- or am I misunderstanding what syncing in the mail app really means? Is it only good for syncing settings (so a new POP account set up on one computer would presumably show up on the other one as well?) I'm also wondering if syncing works differently depending on whether the accounts are POP, IMAP or .Mac?

You haven't started using iSync with .Mac, you're using *.Mac Sync* for which a specific Discussion forum is here:

  • I'm a new user, what does sync mean

My first attempt to ask a question went to cyber space which is a good indication of how little I know about my new toy, iPod touch. I keep reading about Sync & I have no idea what that means, what it does or how it works? Ta in advance

  • What does sync mean?

Anytime I plug my iphone on my MacBook Pro, it prompts me to few things I would like to understand for full usage of my iphone. Can anyone help me with please?
    what does sync mean?
How can I backup contact data in my iphone on the computer to secure
How can I secure against theft?

How you delete content from your iPod depends how you have it set to update:
If you are updating automatically then delete the files from the iTunes library and next time you connect they will automatically be deleted from your iPod. Highlight the file and press the delete key on your keyboard, or right click and choose either Clear or Delete, depending on which version of iTunes you are using.
If you are updating manually, connect your iPod and click on the icon when it shows in the iTunes 7 source list click on the chevron > to the left of the iPod icon This will display the various icons for the iPod itself, Music, Movies, TV Shows and Playlists. Click on Music and you'll see the traditional song view. Find the files on your iPod that you want to remove, highlight them and delete directly.
To select multiple items such as all the songs in an album, click on the first track in the list hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight the selection. Then press the delete key.
To summarise, you start by highlighting the song/video/selection in either the iTunes library or on the iPod song list as displayed in iTunes then press the delete key on your keyboard: Deleting songs or playlists from your iPod

  • What does checking mail manually mean on a macbook air?

what does checking mail manually mean on a macbook air, how is it done?

In Mail's preferences click on the General icon in the toolbar. Here you can set Mail to automatically check for mail Manually.
Then to check for mail you would have to click on the Get Mail icon in the mail browser window:
which is the icon that looks like an envelope.

  • What does iCloud Mail Syncing accomplish?

I have one Mac desktop and two laptops, plus an iPhone & iPad. I use use IMAP with my Gmail account and forward my "iCloud" mail to my Gmail account. I am using OS X 10.9.3.  It seems the IMAP features keep the mail "synchronized" on each device. I thought iCloud sync may sync smart mailboxes across the devices, but I can't seem to create smart mailboxes that persist (separate discussion topic).
Since I can't seem to use smart mailboxes, is there any reason to sync mail through iCloud? What is it supposed to do?
    Thanks Dave
P.S. feel free to comment on my other thread!
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/26116959#26116959

That make sense, but  still somewhat confused. I have found other threads that discuss syncing smart mailboxes across Macs (not sure about iOS devices).
    For example: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4137249?start=15&tstart=0
There are data files in the Library that suggest smart mailbox syncing such as:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/SyncedSmartMailboxes.plist
    ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~mail/Data/MailData/ubiquitous_SyncedSmartMailboxes.plist
I kind of assumed that "System Preferences --> iCloud --> Mail" allowed that sync tooccur (?).
Of course, I still can't create smart mailboxes anyway due to my other issue described in
https://discussions.apple.com/message/26116959#26116959, so it is kind of moot until I resolve that issue.

  • What does sync with Foxfire mean?

What does Foxfire Sync mean? Can I use my Yahoo email account?

'''Firefox Sync''' is a browser synchronizer "system" which allows users to keep their Firefox web browser configured in the same way on different computers, devices, and operating systems. For instance, if a user adds a bookmark while being at home, the bookmark will be available the day after at office; along with many other types of personal data.
    See this: <br />https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-sync-take-your-bookmarks-and-tabs-with-you
'''Can I use my Yahoo email account? ''' <br />
Yes, you can use your Yahoo email account username for your username / email address when you setup Sync.

  • What does syncing actually do

My wife is afraid to attach her iPhone to the computer do to it wanting to sync with the phone. She is afraid of losing music and pictures on the phone.
Please let me know what is actually done when it syncs, so I can make her feel safe.
    Thanks
    Keith

Good question? How did the music and other similar type soft products get out to the iPhone.
    But...
When you Sync the iPhone it takes information that you may have updated through outlook, calendar, music, etc. that you may have updated on your computer and compares and coordinates that information with that on the iPhone.
If the information is not on the iPhone but on the computer, it will move the computer information to the iPhone as an addition to the what is already on the iPhone. In the case of music, I believes that it re-writes all of the music you have designated under the music tab to the the iPhone.
It looks under the tabs indicated by:
    Info
    Ringtones
    Music
    Photos
    Podcasts
    Video
and moves that information, file by file to the iPhone.
In the case of the contacts on the iPhone, it will compare the contacts on the iPhone and determine which contacts are new o and modified and moves them to the computer since you may have made entries directly into your iPhone.
It also does the same thing with the calendar. If you made entries directly into the iPhone and not on the computer it will sync the calendar from the iPhone to the computer.
The precedent of whether the change on the computer has precedent over the ones on the iPhone, if in conflict are resolved during the sync operation and the user syncing the the devices gets a choice of which data to use.
I have never lost data during the sync operation.
    Whew!!

  • What does the mail sync option do?

Ok, so I have a MacBook Pro on Leopard. In iTunes i have the option to sync my mail (I use Gmail and .Mac) with my iPhone. Well, I'm running my iPhone and Apple Mail on IMAP on both Gmail and .Mac. so what exactly does this sync option do for me? I'm already synced since its IMAP. Am I missing something, or is that sync option only useful for those running POP?
And its disabled at the moment, in case you were wondering.
PS - IMAP Gmail on iPhone rocks.

  • RoboHelp 9 - What does WebHelp Search actually Search

I am using RoboHelp 9 and can't seem to find out what WebHelp Search actually searches. Will it search Word documents, PowerPoint or PDF documents that are included in the Project files?
Or does it only search for the keywords that I enter for that topic page that the file is linked to?
    Deb

    Hi Deb
A fair question. But we first need to clarify exactly what you mean by Search. I say this because sometimes folks talk about the Index as if it were Search. And indeed, they are two separate things.
With the Index, the help author specifies specific keywords by either typing them in manually or by asking RoboHelp to assist (by using the Smart Index Wizard) and the experience for the end user is this. They click the Index tab, then begin typing what they are looking for. As they type, a list of keywords is attempted to dynamically match what is being typed. Often, before they completely type the keyword it appears in the list and off they go.
On the other hand, with Search, the user types the search term in full, then clicks a Go button. At that point the search is performed and candidate files are returned. And yes, typically, Microsoft Word documents, Adobe PDF documents, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and I believe even Microsoft PowerPoint documents will also be searched.
    Hope this helps... Rick

  • What does this procedure actually do

    Hi,
This code was copied from the popular HR schema from my Oracle 9i installation.
It says add_job_history, If it populates from somewhere presumbly an employee table, there was no mention of employee in the code.
If it is not actually picking data from another table for it to be called job_history, what is it doing then.
    PROCEDURE HR.add_job_history (
         p_emp_id job_history.employee_id%type
    , p_start_date job_history.start_date%type
    , p_end_date job_history.end_date%type
    , p_job_id job_history.job_id%type
    , p_department_id job_history.department_id%type
    IS
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO job_history (employee_id, start_date, end_date,
    job_id, department_id)
    VALUES(p_emp_id, p_start_date, p_end_date, p_job_id, p_department_id);
    END add_job_history;
    Many thanks

      VALUES (p_emp_id, p_start_date, p_end_date, p_job_id, p_department_id);
END add_job_history;all it do was to inserting a rows in the job_history table. possibly it is being called from a trigger.

  • What does syncing email do?

I have 50 new emails on my iPhone. I read them using Mail on my Mac and then delete the mails on my computer. I then sync the iPhone with my Mac but the emails remain on my iPhone as unread (and I have to manually delete them one at a time).
Shouldn't the sync function delete these emails on the iPhone?
    Cheers,
    GJ

Use an IMAP account instead which is designed for this very thing - accessing the same account with an email client on different computers or devices keeping all server stored mailboxes synchronized automatically.
Send a message with the iPhone and when checking the account with the email client on your computer, the message will be available in the account's Sent mailbox automatically and the same in reverse. Read a message on the iPhone and the message will be marked as read in the account's Inbox mailbox with the email client used on your computer to access the account and vice versa. The same for deleted messages.
This is not supported with a POP account which was designed to be accessed with a single email client on one computer or device.

  • What does syncing do?

I really think i should hate the windows itune-software...
Yesterday i wanted to look some of my podcasts i had downloaded to my iphone, and all were gone. I had downloaded them via wifi directly to my iphone. I had synced the iphone with my pc a day before, and all podcasts are on my home-pc, but were deleted on the iphone. A software should not do this without asking me.
Also yesterday, i created a new playlist in Itunes, synced, and this playlist did not reach my iphone. I will try to read the documentation to find out how to sync correctly. Perhaps the german translation of itunes is a problem here...
Another thing is the absolutely un-windowslike interface. Windows-PCs have mices with tow, three or more buttons and the right button should be used to let windows-users feel at home.

The solution was a boring ad telling that i should create a mobileme-account... And i didn't want to create one and did seed no reason to tell the software that i dont want to do so... After telling i can see al podcast and make hooks to synchronize or not...
But there was no message in the ad telling me what i will see after that ad. Totaly unergonomic...

  • What does a mail archiiive really do?

    Hi,
I have just Archived my Mailboxes (*.mac.com and *.gmail.com) and put those archives on an external drive.
But i do not know what those archives really are...
    1) Can I now access those archives with mail if I connect my MACBook while on the move?
    2) Can I access the attachments?
    3) Can I safely delete the Mailbox contents now and rely on accessing the archives for occasional purposes?
grateful for any insights to this.
    Many thanks, Floor

Select Mail Help from Mail's Help menu and search for "archive." There are several articles that should answer your questions.
The archives are stored on your hard drive and are fully accessible whether you are connected to the Internet or not.
If you retained attachments then they are retained in the archived mailbox.
Although archives are not a substitute for normal access to your mail, they can be used to store mail you no longer need to access regularly. However, archived mailboxes do not save space on your hard drive especially if you use an IMAP mail account and keep your mail on the server. Archiving mail just removes archived messages from the mail browser.

  • What does "consolidating library" actually do?

Why would I need to do it and does it take up extra space on my hard drive?
    Thanks

+"when you say makes a copy to your itunes folder does that mean to the folder that you dsignate in you preferances?"+
    Yes, exactly.
+"here is my problem, most of my music is on my external hdd but everything that i am buying today and importing today it is putting in the username/music/itunes folder"+
New music that you import, or purchase from the iTunes Store, goes into the designated folder, without regard to where the rest of your music is.
+"i want it to go in the folder that has the rest of my music, the folder set in the preferances part is the username/music/itunes but itunes does see the music i have in the other folder. should i just change the folder in my preferances to where i want the music to go and consolidate it all to there?"+
Changing the folder in preferences affects future activity, but does not move anything that is already in place. It sounds like Consolidate is what you want. Make sure you read the link provided by Zevoneer so that you fully understand it; it takes a while to run and has no Undo.
