What "ethernet port" does airport utility use for "remote administration"

I have a friend who was recently evangelized to Macs and bought a Macbook Pro and an Apple Airport Extreme (gigabit) Router, hereinafter called AE. The place where he lives has cable modem internet access and an older Linksys wireless-G router for the building, and I am trying to configure his new AE, prior to making it the primary router in the network (e.g. connected to the cable modem).
When the AE is completely configured the Linksys will be retired.
I remotely manage and maintain the network and some other computers in that house. The Linksys is configured for Remote Administration so I can manage it. I manage several PC's and Macs using Timbuktu Pro 8, with the necessary ports forwarded through to TB2 on those machines.
I am trying to configure the Airport so it also can be managed remotely, so from a workstation on that network (accessed from where I am using TB2) and running Airport Utility, I have checked "Allow setup over WAN" on the Airport/BaseStation page. Now I would like to test whether I can connect and remotely administer that Airport Extreme from Airport Utility on my Mac.
I assume that, if I can rout packets from my Airport Utility here through the internet to the public IP of the Linksys router there, I should be able to connect. But I can't.
My setup is this. The target AE has its WAN port connected to an ethernet port on the Linksys, as is the LAN in the remote building. Nothing is connected to the AE's ethernet ports at this time. The Linksys is the DHCP server, and the AE has an IP from it, as does all the other ethernet- and wireless-connected computers, printers, etc. The AE's wireless is active and the wireless-connected devices in the building can connect to either its base station or to that of the Linksys. When the Linksys is retired the AE will be the only wireless in the building.
I attempt to connect in the following way: On my Mac, I run Airport Utility. From the file menu I select "Configure other" and enter the public IP address of the remote Linksys, and give AE's password. There is a long wait
Reading the Airport wireless device configuration....
while Airport Utility tried to discover AE, and then
An error occurred while reading the configuration..... (-6753)
I suspect that my remote connection problem is due to the fact that the AE is behind the Linksys, and the proper port forwarding is not in place on it to pass the Airport Utility's packets through to the Wan port of the AE. This might be that I have not entered into the Linksys the correct port number to forward on to the AE. I've tried the three numbers in the list:
"Well known TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products" found at
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1629
that are mentioned as possibly being involved with Airport Utility; 192, 4500 and 5009.
Advice will be appreciated.
Bob

One example, and there may be others, is the (free) DynDNS dynamic DNS service which publishes a domain name for the WAN port of your router which can then be resolved, like all other domain names, to the actual IP address of the WAn port of your router. This service provides a solution to the problem of having a proper domain name in cases where your public IP address changes over time. Unless you pay for a static IP address, virtually all ISPs change your public IP address over time.
So, you can register for a free DynDNS account at www.dyndns.com and that is how you come up with the User: and Password: information; use whatever User and Password you register at dyndns.com with.
The first part of the hostname you can define as you wish, subject only to someone else having used it previously, and the remaining parts of the domain name might be "dyndns.org" or one of the other domain names provided by the DynDNS service. So, you could publish, via DynDNS, the name of your public IP address as, for example, joehlam.dyndns.org however you might want something less descriptive or more vague.

  • What port does WRT1900Ac listen on for remote admin

    good morning,
I have had a few problems with linksys smart wifi (periodically cannot connect).
traditionally I run dynDNS so I can connect to devices remotely (using port forwarding) and this works fine for me.
what port does the linksys router itself listen on for remote router admin requests (i.e http://publicipaddress:whatport)
    also, is this configurable?
    thanks

You have to use a Smart Wifi account for remote administration on the WRT1900AC

  • How does AirPort Utility communicate with remote/relay AirPorts?

    1. Wireless case: Does the AirPort Utility always try to communicate with remote/relay AirPorts directly, or does it use the network WDS when another AirPort provides a stronger signal? If it's the former option, this might explain why people have problems sometimes configuring distant AirPort base stations in WDS setups. If it's the latter option, problems with configuring a distant AirPort might be caused by improper configuration of the AirPort providing the strongest signal (presumably, the nearest).
    2. Ethernet case: When one attempts to configure an AirPort via Ethernet, does it matter whether the AirPort is configured to connect to the internet via Ethernet (vs. wirelessly)?

    Thanks for the replies Bob

    Hi Srini:
    Thank you for your reply.
Not sure why Support is asking you about this object - they should be the one providing you the answers ;-)-- I feel confused too. This issue last for one month and still have no idea for this case.
Pl see if MOS Doc 1073171.1 (ORA-7445 [kdkbin()+223] on Linux x86-64 platforms on 9i release) is relevant in your case.--- I've been apply the patch, but no help.

Is there a way to stop the OS from switching to a newly opened app?  I would like to be able to continue what I'm doing while I wait for an app to launch and not get interrupted by a forced entry into the app.
As an example, I'm going to my email in safari, while I wait for it to load, I open an excel document, and the OS decides excel should be the front app, so I go back to safari so I can enter my login info, but halfway through my password the OS decides that excel is where I should finish typing my password.
VERY ANNOYING.  Can I open apps in the background?

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. J D, I'm not a terminal fan, but I'm sure it works.  I found a solution that I can use in the dock from another post.

If anyone has any comments to ally my fears, I welcome them. I've been a devoted Mac user since 1993. 7500; G4; G5; and my latest Mac Pro...Where do I go? Again...HELP!

    Hi there,
If you look through ALL the reviews, they are mainly good. I feel that Lion is an excellent upgrade, although not essential.
There have been some issues with MS Office, but right now, it is up to Microsoft to issue a Lion compatible update, which will come in time. Saying this, MS Office has been working fine on my mac, it seems to be an isolated issue.
Logic 9 seems like a strange issue. Again, an update looks to be coming soon, with Lion support.
I do not feel that apple only focusing on the iPhone and iPad user base. There are many features carried along, but the machine can still be used for pro tools and use just as well. It still is a fantastic, reliable, fast, easy to use OS, which I have had very few problems with. Some additions you may not use, but they don't get in the way. You will love the new Exposé, Mission Control, as it is great for pro users who have many windows open at once, and the new spaces. You may however, never use Launchpad, but you don't have to, just drag it away from the dock!
I really reccomend buying a mac with Lion, although if you are worried about bugs, wait a few months for the issues to be ironed out, and updates to be given. Because the update is so very cheap, I really think you can hardly go wrong. Try it out with your current mac, and if you like it, go ahead and buy your new ones.
Lion is fantastic, albeit maybe rushed.
    Any other queries, just ask,
    Nathan

  • What's the best flash to use for nighttime sports games?

What's the best flash to use for nighttime sporting events? I have a rebel XT and I'm pushing it to its limits trying to stop the action. I've tried a speedlite 430 but it didn't have a hook up for an external battery pack and I was told I'd need the extra power. Just tried the 580ex ll on Friday but at the 1/1 setting, it didn't flash for each frame in a burst, even with the external power. I should have backed it down to 1/4 but didn't know at the time. Any thought on a really good flash for night sports? Is the 580 a good choice?

JUst as Tim_S said. YOu will want a external battery pack. Unforatannly the 430 does not have the option to plug in a external battery pack so will want to pick up a 580 or one of the new 600 series.
Then you start looking at the battery packs. I recommend Quantum power packs

  • What is "FND : Diagnostics %"  profile option used for ?

What is "FND : Diagnostics %" profile option used for ?
How is it different from "FND : Debug%" profiles ?

I guess my above update was misleading (Sorry for that) .. Please find below more details about (FND: Diagnostics) and (FND: Debug Log Enabled):
Both profile options are used to configure logging, the difference between them is (FND: Debug Log Enabled) is a database profile option used to configure logging while (FND: Diagnostics) is used to configure logging to screen.
    Logging to screen provides:
    - The ability to enable logging on a per HTTP request or per HTTP session basis.
    - Dynamic configuration which does not require restarting any servers or changing any log profiles.
    - A convenient lightweight mechanism to diagnose performance issues. Each message is timestamped to the millisecond.
If Logging to Screen is enabled, then the Java log messages generated for a particular HTTP Request-Response are buffered in memory and appended to the end of the generated HTML page.
This feature does not affect any existing configurations of file or database logging. File or database logging continues to behave per the configured middle tier log properties and/or log profile values.
Note that this mechanism currently provides only Java layer messages. Regular file or database logging should be used if messages from other layers (e.g., PL/SQL) are needed.
    In brief ..
FND: Diagnostics (Self-Service) --> To see this, Login as that user and navigate to self-service, Click the Diagnostics link in the upper right corner
    - Default = “No”
    - Recommendation = “No”
    - Requires APPS password to use Examine function
    - Usually set to “Yes” during development

  • What brands and type can I use for my iMac 20" internal Hard Drive?

what brands and type can I use for my iMac 20" aluminium internal Hard Drive?
can I use WD caviar black?
    is it too hot?

If you are replacing the drive because the existing one is faulty, that's one thing. If you just want more space, you should take advantage of having a decently fast and relatively small capacity drive in there now (instead of a huge drive). Get an external FireWire drive and off-load most of your user data there. Make your internal drive dedicated to mostly your OS and app files, with plenty of free space. That setup will make your iMac run more efficiently. I won't go into more detail, because I'm not answered your specific question... You can post back with any questions, if interested...
    To answer your questions...
You should be able to use any SATA 3.5-inch drive internally, but you should probably keep it at or under 1TB. The main concerns are power usage and heat dissipation. A drive like the WD Caviar Green would be ideal in terms of power and heat, but they do have slower (or variable) spin rate. I have one as an external drive (750GB) and it is amazingly quiet and cool. If I had to replace the internal drive because the current drive failed, I'd put it inside. I'll trade a bit of pure performance for the efficiency (including low noise), and these drives are more advanced with higher data density and larger cache, so the trade-off from slower spin rate may not be so bad.
You can check your current drive's model number (which is shown in System Profiler) to get the specs online. The stock drive in my old +Late 2006+ iMac is a 7200 RPM drive. The Caviar Black is a 7200 RPM drive, with a newer design. So if you want to use a Caviar Black in there, I think it would be OK.
