What exactly is the point in pre-ordering albums on iTunes?

I talk specifically of the new Portishead album, out in two weeks.
If I pay for it now, I don't get it any sooner. I am guaranteed a copy if I wait, and I don't get any more bonus tracks for paying for it up front.
So what is the point!?
Why not just stick a thumbnail up saying "Portishead New Album out in only Two Weeks!"
I'll probably want a nice CD copy of that anyway...

But pre-ordering it just makes you want it more. If I got it a day earlier, say, or perhaps something else then I would pre-order it now.
What they did with James album was a really cool idea, if you buy it before a certain date you get first shot at concert tickets when they come out. Handy thing to have if you are a fan.
Sadly though the album didn't really grab me on 30 second sample and they are not touring near where I live anyway.

  • What's the point of pre-ordering an album?

A couple of weeks ago I pre-ordered the Glee Soundtrack Vol. 2 priced @$9.99
It just became available and I got an email advising me I can now download it. When I do, I get a pop-up saying that the final price is now $12.99 not the $9.99 that was displayed when I pre-ordered it and I will be charged the $12.99!!
How is this possible? In every other store, not only are you guaranteed the pre-order price no matter how much the "final" price ends up being, but you actually will get the item for less should the "final" price happen to drop from the time you pre-order to the time you actually receive it.
What exactly is the purpose in pre-ordering if Apple forces you to pay the new higher price anyway? This seems totally unfair and unjustifiable.
Sorry, am I ranting for nothing? Am I missing something? Is there some method I am missing that I am to use to d/l the album at the price at which I originally agreed?

It's so funny you mentioned this, I'm currently having the same problem with the same album. I actually just finished sending iTunes an email about it (supposed to get back to me within 24 hours) and then found this article. I would suggest you do the same, but if you don't I'll try to remember to post back what I hear from them. I've always had great support for the odd thing that didn't work properly (like a glitch in a TV show or something) so I'm sure they'll clear this up without a problem. I asked the same thing too though, about what price I actually get charged, so hopefully I'll also get a response to that too. But yes, according to most pre-order rules in other stores, it should be the price we pre-ordered it for. Oh and yes I've checked for available downloads from the iTunes Store menu, but it just told me everything has been downloaded already. I double-checked my library to be sure it hadn't downloaded in the background but it was definitely not there. It has not downloaded yet.

  • How do i get me pre ordered album to itunes

how do i get me pre ordered album to itunes

If you go into the itunes store and select the Purchased Link under Quick Links
Then you can select the Album it should appear under the Music
Click the Cloud icon by the side of it and it should download at no extra cost.
In future to ensure this does not happen. Preferences, Store
    Tick Download Pre-Orders when available

  • Re: What is the point of pre-ordering ... ?

I also had the same problem with Shadow Of Mordor at my Best Buy in Columbia / Elkridge, Maryland. I made sure to pre-order Sunday so I would get the $10.00 in certificates. I planned to pick it up today, 3 days after release date. The Pre-order card states that the product will be held for FIVE DAYS. I went in to Best Buy today to pay off and pick up my pre-order, only to find out that they were sold out. The employee said that after 48 hours of not picking up the game, they sold everything they had. I didn't have money until today. A pre-order IS A RESERVATION. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Now I don't have the game, and I'll miss out on the points because of them. I'm very angry.

    Good morning Miadaskate.
A pre-order placed within one of your Best Buy stores should be held for at least 5 days before being placed back onto the sales floor.  If your pre-order for Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor was put back onto the sales floor after only two days, then I can understand why you might feel angry.  Being that a pre-order needs to be picked up within 7 days of the official release to qualify for the "Get $10" bonus points, your time would be limited if your pre-order was sold to someone else.
I am very sorry for any inconvenience you may have experienced, as that is not the level of service that Best Buy strives to provide its customers.  While looking over your account history, I noticed that you were able to pick-up your pre-order yesterday.  That was within 7 days, so your pre-order should qualify for the 500 bonus points.  You should see those bonus points post to your My Best Buy™ account within about 20 days.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you for reaching out to us on the forum and game on!

  • What's the point of pre-ordering the iPod touch 5th generation?

What is the advantage if I pre-order the iPod touch, rather than buying it in a few weeks? Is there a price difference?

No price difference. The only advantage is that you'll be able to receive the new version possibly before it hits store shelves.  Other than that, there really isn't any.

  • Joins - What exactly is the point

OK, here is a standard Warehouse look feel on a table relationship (star schema)
    Person (pk: id)
    | Person.id = Course.id
-------------------------------------------------- Course (pk: id, term, course id, crn)
    | Person.id = Academic_Study.id
------------------------------------------------- Academic Study (pk: id, term)
As delivered from the company Person is not joined to any folder; go figure. I decided I needed Person joined to Course and Acacemic Study and built them in the fashion you see above. Person is the Master and the other two tables are Detail. When I go to build a report, I can add one of the detail tables but when I attempt to add a second I get the error message:
Join configuratuin cannot be resolved. Reason: more than 1 of the detail folders uses non-agregated items.
Other than this error message wont let me add bring these two detail folders under the one master folder for my report, what should I have thought about when building these joins and table relationships?
    I could have done this
    Person (pk: id)
    | Person.id = Course.id
-------------------------------------------------- Course (pk: id, term, course id, crn)
    |
--- Academic Study (pk: id, term)
(I would join Course to Academic_Study on id and term)
The reason I didnt do this was because I have ran into SUMMING issues in Discoverer when this model is picked if I wanted to sum something on Course or Academic_Study.
What is it the Discoverer expects? What is a good practice when attempting to link folders together in Discoverer? Should I not be thinking of Star Schemes when linking these objects?
Any feed back on this issue is good feed back - Thanks ahead of time to all that reply.

  • What exactly is the point of calculating magnitude for compass.

//Compute and display the magnitude (size or strength) of the vector, magnitude = sqrt(x^2 + y^2 + z^2).
    CGFloat magnitude = sqrt(heading.x*heading.x + heading.y*heading.y + heading.z*heading.z);
    NSString *magnitude_string = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%.1f microteslas",magnitude];
This code is from the example.
What is the point of calculating this data ? What could it be use for ?

The magnitude of a vector is used to normalize its components. For example we can't assume that the calibration of our Y accelerometer is the same as the X or Z. If the maximum Y is 1.05, and the maximum X is 0.95, we can have a significant error when calculating the angle. Normalization fixes this problem. The response from mbessey in this thread might be helpful: [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9094888&#9094888].
For more background, you might want to look up the "Unit Vector" in a physics text. I did a quick Google search for you, and found that most of the links assumed a background in math (get a clue Wikipedia: anyone who can read the notation already knows what a unit vector is!). Here's the best tutorial I found: [http://www.physics.uoguelph.ca/tutorials/vectors/vectors.html].
    Hope that helps!

  • HT1849 Is there a bonus track on the 20/20 pre-order album? I hear a song but it's not listed on the track list.

I was one of the lucky Tennessee Kids who got to listen to Part 2 of The 20/20 Experience on iTunes a week before the album was released. Of course, I listened to the album on repeat the ENTIRE week, but I noticed that there was a song at the end of the album that was not listed on the track list. Is this a bonus track that is only available when you pre-order? It's on the album as if the last song is over 11 minutes long, but it's a completely separate song, so I don't know if it's an addition to the song or if it's a hidden bonus track.
I was going to purchase the album when it's released on Monday as a "complete my album" option since I've already purchased Part 1 of The 20/20 Experience and I want the COMPLETE Experience. But I may be rethinking my methods if that last song on Part 2 is not going to be available come Monday.....
    HELP!!!!

Try posting in a more appropriate forum, as this has noting to do with itunes U - the place where University/college/museums post education material.

I pre-ordered an album I want to send as a gift to my friend but I don't have the option gift anywhere. How can I do that? If I can't I would like to cancel the pre-purchase and I need to know what to do.

  • What are the perks to pre-ordering movie rentals in the itunes store?

What are the perks to pre-ordering movie rentals in the itunes store?

You can purchase music using multiple accounts within the same Windows profile & using the same iTunes library. I think when you log into the store it remembers the last account name used, but provided you don't let it remember your password then you have the opportunity to enter the correct details for each purchase.
If you're going to place these purchases on your respective iPod's the following may help.
*How to use multiple iPods with one computer*
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer suggests a number of ways. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
    e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
    etc.
I currently manage our family's five iPods using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their iPod. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

if you don't have time to stand in line or don't want to risk getting there too late and leaving empty handed from the apple store preordering will guarantee you one but possibly in a slightly longer timeframe

  • Does BB care that customers are unhappy about the iPhone 5 pre-order process? Should they?

It is obvious that there are more than a few customers who are unhappy with the iPhone 5 pre-order process. In my case I was unhappy with it. BB kept pointing the finger at Apple. It is well documented in the press that Apple has redirected supply to Apple customers then to phone companies. So, although still unhappy, I was buying BB's explanation.
Fast forward to this past Saturday. I received an email that my iPhone is ready for pick up. Due to prior commitments over the weekend I planned on picking up the phone on Monday. On Sunday I get an email stating that if I don't pick up my phone by Tuesday my preorder would be canceled. I gave it no thought. This morning (Monday) I got a reminder email. Still everything is good, because I'm going to pick it up today.
I walked into the store seconds after the door was unlocked. I hand my paperwork to the salesman in the mobile department. He asked me if I had received a phone call. I said no. He said there was no iphone for me. I showed him the emails on my phone. The net result is that I do not yet have my iphone. I am expecting someone at BB to blame the emails on Apple.
Does BB care about the fact that there are disgruntled customers? Should they? They no longer have any brick and mortar competitors. Since they have a monopoly in most markets, should they even bother to care? Caring would probably eat into their profits.

They absolutely should care.  The thing about the iPhone is that it is a product that makes a large splash.  People can instantly talk about it since it is statistically a good ice breaker.  One of the first things I talk about when I discuss my iPhone with other's is where to buy it and I have not recommended Best Buy for the way they have handled this exact scenario.  When they found out what had happend they could have at the very least offered to price match Walmart for the 16GB version.
As far as the competition is concerned.  I say that I will be purchasing the more costly electronics online or Costco.  I am through with Best Buy.  I will stop in periodically and "play" with the item's I am interested in purchasing but no longer will I buy from them.
By blaming Apple for this and given that Apple has done this to them in the past, I can only wonder how they did not see this coming.  If I were in a situation where I knew the supplier would even consider Shorting me on supply I would demand a written and legally binding statement by that supplier that I would not get stiffed for the devices.  It only makes sense that if you have a contract to sell then you have a contract to secure your supply.
If this contract existed we would be hearing about a lawsuit against Apple by Best Buy but they don't have this agreement so they just look amature and naiive.
Good luck to you in getting your phone.  I simply walked into an Apple Store in Cupertino CA on 09/21/12 at 5PM and walked out by 5:30PM with all my contacts and email set up.

  • What exactly does the Radio Beacon Indicate

I have seen cases where the Radio Beacon is black and when it is gray. When it's black you may or may not be able to go through the wireless router to the modem and then to the internet. When it is gray, you cannot really do anything except be in a local mode. However there are instances when the Radio Beacon is black, rather than gray, and you still cannot access the internet. So, what exactly does the activated Radio Beacon Indicate, i.e., that the wireless network is working and the modem is down, or something else entirely ?

Assuming you're referring to the Airport icon in the menu bar, 'clear/empty' means Airport is turned off, gray bars means Airport is on but not connected to a network, and black bars means Airport is on and connected to a network. Other possible icon states are solid gray with a little computer inset, meaning you're connected to a computer-to-computer created on the Mac, and gray bars with an exclamation point (10.6 only), meaning connected to a network but not authenticated (e.g. wrong password for an 801.2X corporate/university network).
To your question, it's perfectly possible to be successfully connected to a network (black icon) and unable to access the internet. Situations like that would include the network requiring a proxy server, for which you haven't set up the details on in Network Preferences, or you're connected to an open network that requires you to enter information or agree to terms (e.g. a hotel network, where you need to put in your room number and agree to the charges before you can connect to the internet).

  • What exactly are the cron scripts doing?

    Hi,
Hope the subject says it all: I have searched but not found a detailed explanation as what the cron scripts (daily, weekly, monthly) actually do, and if the utilities (Onyx, Cocktail, Xupport, etc) are doing exactly the same.
Can someone point to a site or explain?
    TIA
    Dan

    Hi Dan,
    (in addition to Barry's reply)
    Yes,
    1) running the Daily, the Weekly and the Monthly tasks manually with an utility, or
    2) running them yourself with the
    sudo periodic daily
    sudo periodic weekly
    sudo periodic monthly
    Terminal commands
(or this one: sudo periodic daily weekly monthly), or
    3) leaving your computer running 24/7/365 so that they run automatically,
all three ways do exactly the same thing.
--> To see what they do exactly, the best way is to open Console, and in the /var/log section, look for "daily.out", "weekly.out" and "monthly.out".
What exactly are the "cron scripts" doing?
    (Periodic tasks)
In Console, you'll find a lot of different files that grow with more and more information every minute, even every second for some of them.
The three Periodic tasks regularly rearrange them and compresses them so that they don't take too much disk space.
They also rebuild some system database so that the data never gets unusable by the system.
