An object is a section of source code that contains data and provides services. The data forms the attributes of the object. The services are known as methods (also known as operations or functions). Typically, methods operate on private data (the attributes, or state of the object), which is only visible to the methods of the object.
What are ABAP Objects?
1) ABAP Objects is a new concept in R/3 Release 4.0. The term has two meanings. On the one hand, it stands for the entire ABAP runtime environment. On the other hand, it represents the object-oriented extension of the ABAP language.
2) The new name ABAP Objects for the entire ABAP runtime environment is an indication of the way in which SAP has, for some time, been moving towards object orientation, and of its commitment to pursuing this line further.
3) The ABAP Workbench allows you to create R/3 Repository objects such as programs, authorization objects, lock objects, Customizing objects, and so on.
4) Using function modules, you can encapsulate functions in separate programs with a defined interface. The Business Object Repository (BOR) allows you to create SAP Business Objects for internal and external use (DCOM/CORBA).

There is no such Equivalent in OO ABAP.
You have to Raise your own Event within tha class checking the value of the field whose value is changing.

ABAP objects - what a headache!!!

Howdy,
Objects is really getting me down.
I had a program that worked really nicely when I'd created the classes locally within the program.
Now I've created the class globally via SE24 and whenever I try to run the program I get a dump beacuse of a null value (?).
Anyway I think this is occuring because I have this code:
DATA: r_html TYPE REF TO zzcl_http_assign.
and then when I try to create the object via:
CREATE object r_html.
I get an error saying that:
"You cannot create an instance of the class "ZZCL_HTTP_ASSIGN" outside the class. -"
Anyone have any idea what is going on????

Also, I know that it is a little confusing now(ABAP objects), but keep working with it, eventually it will just click. Good Luck.

What are the differences between inactive and active ABAP objects?

Can anybody tell me what are the differences between inactive and active ABAP objects?
In my opinion, an active object is compiled and system wide available, that means the system do not have to compile the program again before run or use the object. While An inactive object is not system wide available and every time you run an inactive object, firstly the abap runtime will have to generate a tempory runtime object and this inactive object can not seen by others.
Am I right? Can anybody kindly tell me other differences?

"When it is inactive, it is like it would not exist at all:" no - it's like it only exists to you
"If we just saved that one means it is stored in application server not in database": no - the inactive version is also stored in the database. You can log off and log on and it will still be there, in its inactive status.
"Only active objects can be executed.": no - inactive objects can be executed by you
When you create or modify a program, it is inactive until you activate it.
With a change, there are two versions of the program stored in the database - the active version (as it was before you made your change), and the inactive version. If you attempt to run the program, you'll run the inactive version - the one with your changes. Everyone else on the system will run the active version.
In this way, you can make changes without affecting anyone else.
Once you activate your program, then the inactive version becomes the active version.
With a create, there is no active version, until you hit the activate button. This means ONLY you can run the program.
An additional benefit of this model, is that if you make a change, save it, and then change your mind without activating, you can recover the active version into the editor, using version management.
A downside is that sometimes you have to activate your change before you can test it, if it interacts with other, active, programs.

Poll: Development in ABAP Objects / Webdynpro vs. classical Dynpro

Hey there ABAP developers,
I just want to ask if you can give me one or two minutes of your attention for two poll questions.
At the moment I´m writing my master thesis about the development of a monitoring tool in ABAP. One of my bigger chapters is about the decision, which programming paradigm should be used for new development projects in SAP. And another important one is about WebDynpro vs. classical Dynpros.
Because of the fact, that I can´t create any polls in here, I just started this discussion and hope for many replies .
It would be very nice if some of you could give me an answer to the following questions (only 2 ), so that I can maybe use the result of this poll in my master thesis, if there are enough responses.
1. What percentage of new development projects are you developing in ABAP Objects? (Not to be considered small reports that just runs for only one time)
     A. 0 %
     B. less than 25%
     C. 25% - 49%

2. Which GUI technology do you prefer?
     A. Classical Dynpro
     B. WebDynpro

Present SAP Implementation projects are very rare, maximum projects are support and up gradations only .
If they want Implement the SAP newly , defiantly they should creating ABAP Objects.
Why Because ABAP Objects are Object Oriented Concepts, so, for future reference and re usability..etc .
Now Come to the First Quetion.
if it is implementation project   ABAP Objects are 25% - 49%.
if it is Support project ABAP Objects are 25%
Now Come to the Second Quetion.
Depend upon Reqmnt, but Most of the Applications are Webdynpro . i.e 70%.
Remaining 30% All ( BSP and GUI ....Etc..)
This is my opinion.

It will be similar to what you do in normal report.
Here you may create an object instance and then call some method on the object.
AT LINE-SELECTION.
create object obj.
CALL METHOD obj->method1
IMPORTING
text = im_text.
write: im_text.

How to use LDB PNP with ABAP objects in a program

Hello,
I am wondering if anybody has used the HR logical database(LDB) PNP with user defined ABAP objects in a program? I am using the FM- LDB_PROCESS but its not working. Also assigning PNP in the attributes section of the program -- so that I can use predefined fields from the LDB and then invoking the FM doesn't work -- throwing 'Logical database already active' error.
I suppose even with the ABAP objects and the new FM -- I should still be able to utilize the pre-defined fields of the PNP database -- and also the built in authorizations. I cannot use GET PERNR and REJECT as they give errors. I understand that the use of HR-macros (RP-PROVIDE-FROM-LAST and et al.) are not allowed as they use the table work area -- which is not allowed in ABAP-OOPS.
I would really appreciate if anyone could show me some insight regarding this. Thank you.

It would be really good if we could use both together. But as I know, it is not possible. "GET pernr." is an event-like loop statement and so cannot be used in OO context. And I guess, the same restriction holds for the "LDB_PROCESS" since it uses LDB-specific processing.
What I suggest you is to use standard and BAPI functions.

Goto SE38 and give BCALV and press F4 you will get standard SAP programs for most requirements.
They use ABAP OO to develop the ALV.

ALV GRID-Abap Objects

I am using ALV grid in ABAP objects. I have to sort ascending and descending. I saw the program BCALV_TEST_GRID. I copied the function code for ascending and descending from the program. But it is not working. what is the problem?

I have displayed alv grid in container control using abap objects i.e. using method set_table_for_first_display.
now i need to display list header for this alv grid.

Create a splitter using CL_GUI_EASY_SPLITTER_CONTAINER with a top and bottom half. Put the alv grid in the bottom half. Use cl_dd_document (documented in help.sap.com ) to build the header in the top half. Use events on CL_GUI_ALV_GRID to handle the top-of-list printing.
Or, if available, use CL_SALV_TABLE, and read the documentation on that. When I needed a header for my report, that's what I did. There's plenty of good documentation about if you'll search for it.

ABAP Objects template for HR programs

Is there a template to use Objects in HR programs the way we had with HR-macros ? It used to be like this when using PNP LDB:
INITIALIZATION
<initialize buffer>
START-OF-SELECTION
<initial setup>
GET PERNR
rp-provide-from-last <pNNNN> space low_date high_date.
<store in an internal table>

Is there an ABAP Objects equivalent of calling standard FM/macros in HR? What are the most usefull Classes to process HR employee master data (ie. IT0000-IT0999) ? Any usefull refrences/links will be helpful.
