What is Column Buffer area?

What on earth is Column Buffer area? How do i increase it?
While issuing a simple SELECT query i received the error ORA-01406 fetched column value was truncated . It is a 9i Error. The solution for this mentioned in documentations is : Action: Increase the column buffer area to hold the largest column value or perform other appropriate processing .
The weird thing is , this query works on our sample database, Oracle version 9.2.0.5.0 . But it doesn't work in our client site on the same version (9.2.0.5.0) .
Any thoughts?

I have an SQR that reads a CLOB field. I had one value returned that was > 12,000 bytes.
Apparently, the SQR db drivers can't handle an entire CLOB as a single column in a select statement. The trick is to break up the CLOB into chunks of 12,000 KB columns and combine them later in order for the SQR to handle it.
begin-select
clobfield
let $myclob = &clobfield
show $myclob
end-select
The above SQL would return an error:
(SQR 5528) ORACLE OCIStmtFetch error 1406 in cursor 18:
ORA-01406: fetched column value was truncated
Error on line 67:
(SQR 3725) Bad return fetching row from database.
To avoid this error, I used the following:
begin-select
substr(clobfield, 0, 12000) &clobfield1
substr(clobfield, 12000, 24000) &clobfield2
!Add more if your data will be > 24000 bytes
let $myclob = &clobfield1 || &clobfield2
show $myclob
end-select

  • BLOB column inserts are slow

    Hi All,
    Have a table with 7 columns where 4 columns are of Varchar2 type, 2 columns are of NUMBER type and 1 column is of type BLOB.
    Myself inserting the values to the table from JAVA program. Insertion to VARCHAR2 and NUMBER type columns are very much fast. But insertion to BLOB column is dead slow(data to BLOB column values are about 10KB).
    Please help me in this regard to insert BLOB values fastly.

    And inserting 250 records/ sec(during peak load and 50 records/sec during normal load). where each record is having size of 10K(Blob column size).And what is slow? You have NOT yet provided ANY evidence that points to the actual INSERT being slow.
    As I have already explained, there are a number of layers from client to server - and any, or all of these, could be contributing to the problem.
    Use your web browser and look up what instrumentation is. Apply it. Instrument your code. On the client. On the server. So you have evidence (call stats and metrics) to use to determine what and where the performance problem is. And not have to guess - and like most developers point your finger at the database in the false belief that your client code, client design, and client usage of the database, are all perfect.

  • JTable Column Headers are Squashed!

    Hi there,
    I'm using JBuilder, and have created a simple enough JTable that I place inside a JScrollPane. I am using my own implementation of the AbstractTable model.
    When I run the code, the Column headers are only about 5 pixels high! I have hunted around the JBuilder code (which if you have used JBuilder you will know is extensive!), but it doesn't seem to be doing anything extraordinary.
    So has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did you do to rectify.
    Yours hopefully
    Richard

    Hello there, my abstract implementation looks a little like this:
      public static final String columns[] = { "", "Request Id", "Date", "Component Name", "Version", "Type" };
      public String getColumnName(int columnIndex) {
        return columns[columnIndex];
      public Class getColumnClass(int columnIndex) {
        if (columnIndex == 0) {
          return Boolean.class;
        } else if (columnIndex == 1) {
          return Integer.class;
        } else {
          return String.class;
      }Thanks

  • Imp-00020 long column too large for column buffer size (22)

    Hi friends,
    I have exported (through Conventional path) a complete schema from Oracle 7 (Sco unix patform).
    Then transferred the export file to a laptop(window platform) from unix server.
    And tried to import this file into Oracle10.2. on windows XP.
    (Database Configuration of Oracle 10g is
    User tablespace 2 GB
    Temp tablespace 30 Mb
    The rollback segment of 15 mb each
    undo tablespace of 200 MB
    SGA 160MB
    PAGA 16MB)
    All the tables imported success fully except 3 tables which are having AROUND 1 million rows each.
    The error message comes during import are as following for these 3 tables
    imp-00020 long column too large for column buffer size (22)
    imp-00020 long column too large for column buffer size(7)
    The main point here is in all the 3 tables there is no long column/timestamp column (only varchar/number columns are there).
    For solving the problem I tried following options
    1.Incresed the buffer size upto 20480000/30720000.
    2.Commit=Y Indexes=N (in this case does not import complete tables).
    3.first export table structures only and then Data.
    4.Created table manually and tried to import the tables.
    but all efforts got failed.
    still getting the same errors.
    Can some one help me on this issue ?
    I will be grateful to all of you.

    Thanks, but this note is for older releases, 7.3 to 8.0...
    In my case both export and import were made on a 11.2 database.
    I didn't use datapump because we use the same processes for different releases of Oracle, some of them do not comtemplate datapump. By the way, shouldn't EXP / IMP work anyway?

  • Column names are all uppercase?

    When i run a query on an Oracle database the column names are all uppercase (as retrieved from ResultSetMetaData).
    In my query i am putting aliases i.e. select id idName, section sectionDetails ..... etc. but the column name always comes out in capital letters. Is this always the case or can i change it somehow?

    SQL, not just Oracle, is case insenstive unless quoted identifiers are used.
    And one shouldn't use table/field names in a GUI, which is probably what is happening, unless one is creating a database GUI (vs an application GUI.)

    Providing more information/background is probably the wise thing to do.
    Versions (databases, exp, imp), commands and parameters used - copy&paste, relevant part of logs - copy&paste, describe table, etc.
    Some background, like what's the purpose, did this work before, what has changed, etc.
    Also you might check the suggested action for the error code per documentation:

  • HT1923 what hard drive changes are made when downloading i-tunes 10.6 upgrade

    what hard drive changes are made to my computer when downloading the i-Tunes 10.6 upgrade / update?
    what registry changes does it make, if any?

    Ok, so as far as the hard drive goes, go for the biggeset one you can afford/need. 500 gb, should be plenty big for just about anybody. But as for the speed of the drive.... Yes, a 7200 rpm drive will drain the battery life much quicker than a 4200 rpm drive or even a 5400 rpm drive. Apple has been shipping 4200 rpm drives as a standard for ever practically, and recently made the 5400 rpm the new standard with the 7200 as an option. More important than the physical speed is the buffer size. A nice big buffer will provide quicker access to data and not eat into your battery life. Then there is also the option of an SSD (solid state drive), but those are still crazy expensive.
    I've read any Serial ATA drive is compatible with the drop sensor. I upgraded my hard drive with a Seagate, and it works great. Apple generally ships Toshiba drives in their laptops.
    replacing a hard drive can be a bit of work. First of all it will void your warranty (But your is obviously expired anyways) It is pretty complicated and takes a lot of patience. iFixit has great step by step instructions. here's a link : http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBookPro_15%22_Core_2_Duo_Models_A1226_andA1260

  • APEX don't allow modify rows in columns which are Primary Key ?

    I have created a new page -> Form -> Tabular Form for table 'author' because I would like to add new authors, modify and delete. During creating this page I have choosen column 'id_author' as 'primary key column 1' and everything is OK (I can't modify column 'id_author' - this column is autoincrement and I can modify column 'name').
    BUT I have also created a new page -> Form -> Tabular for table 'book_author' because I would like to write numbers as id_book and id_author, modify and delete them (so add relations between tables: book, book_author and author). During creating this page I have choosen column 'id_book' as 'primary key column 1' and 'id_author' as 'primary key column 2'. And on website I can't modify (edit) these fields. And I can't also add new row because I see in each column in new row: (null).

    Single-column and non-meaningful so you never want to update them. In the case of your example, you would need to add an ID column to the book_author intersection table. Honestly, I was so blown away (and pleasantly surprised) by the lack of rebuttal and the "thx" that I went ahead and put together an example of how I would define the book_author table:
    create table  book_author
       (id varchar2(32),
        book_id varchar2(32),
         author_id varchar2(32),
         modified_on     date,
         modified_by varchar2(255),
         constraint book_author_pk primary key (id),
         constraint book_auth_book_fk foreign key (book_id) references books(id),
         constraint book_auth_author_fk foreign key (author_id) references authors(id)
    create unique index book_author_uq on book_author (book_id,author_id)
    create or replace trigger  biu_book_author before insert or update on book_author
    for each row
    begin
         if inserting then
              :new.id := sys_guid();
         end if;
         modified_on := sysdate;
         modified_by := nvl(v('APP_USER'),user);
    end;
    /Good luck,

  • Column headings are mismatched when export to excel (Data Only)

    Hi All,
    We have an old Crystal Web Portal designed using CE10 in VS 2003.   The crystal viewer shipped with VS 2003 exports to excel (Data only) in correct order where all the columns headers are matched with the corresponding data.
    We have re-written the entire new web portal in VS 2008 with using CE10 on windows 2003 server.  Everything works we can view the report, page navigation, export to PDF, export to MS Excel 97-2000.   However when export to MS Excel 97-2000 (Data only) option, the column headings are mismatched with the corresponding data.   I don't understand what changed between VS 2003 Crystal Viewer and VS 2008 Crystal Viewer.   I think this has to be the crystal viewer problem because I'm exporting from the viewer tool bar.
    Here is the API referencing in the code:
    In Visual Studio I'm referencing all CE10 10.0.3300 version api's.  Howerver since Crystal Viewer with VS 2008 is newer and has 10.5.3700 version I'm using CrystalDecision.Shared and CrystalDecision.Web are version 10.5.3700.   These seems to have no problem.  The entire web portal works fine.
    More about Web Portal:
    -User is validated upon login with CE10
    -use selects the report from the list
    -Report ID is then passed to reportdocument
    -reportdocument API loads the report and
    -Viwer.reportsource= reportdocument.reportsource
    We cannot update Crystal Enterprise 10 right now.   I'm in the middle of deploying new web portal with VS 2008.   I have to resolve the Export excel (Data only) option and have the column headers matched with the data in excel.   I have tried everthing.
    Can some help here.
    thanks

    Hi,
    The report saves the printer information and if it can connect to the exact same printer then the print options will get passed to the printer.
    If the report is being sent to a different printer, Crystal doesn't know if this new printer will support the same settings, ie. duplex or color.  In our case we were setting the report to print duplex printing and landscape.  When our application went to print it actually crashed because some of the printers didn't support duplex.
    What we did is disable the print button on the viewer and added the PrintDialog control to our form.  Use the ReportDocument.PrintOptions method to set the properties for the PrintDialog control.
    var printDialog1 = new PrintDialog();
    printDialog1.UseEXDialog = true;
    printDialog1.AllowSomePages = true;
    if (myLink.Parent.SavedPrinterSettings != null)
         printDialog1.PrinterSettings = myLink.Parent.SavedPrinterSettings; //Use any saved printer settigns
         printDialog1.PrinterSettings.Copies = Convert.ToInt16(copies);
         dr = printDialog1.ShowDialog();
         if (dr == DialogResult.OK)
         myLink.Parent.SavedPrinterSettings = printDialog1.PrinterSettings;     //Save the latest printer settings
         nCopy = printDialog1.PrinterSettings.Copies;               //Get the number of Copies
         sPage = printDialog1.PrinterSettings.FromPage;               //Get the number of Start Page
         ePage = printDialog1.PrinterSettings.ToPage;                    //Get the number of End Page
         myReport.PrintOptions.PrinterName = printDialog1.PrinterSettings.PrinterName;     //Get the printer name
         myReport.PrintOptions.CustomPaperSource = printDialog1.PrinterSettings.DefaultPageSettings.PaperSource;
         if (printDialog1.PrinterSettings.Duplex == System.Drawing.Printing.Duplex.Vertical)
              myReport.PrintOptions.PrinterDuplex = PrinterDuplex.Vertical;
         else if (printDialog1.PrinterSettings.Duplex == System.Drawing.Printing.Duplex.Horizontal)
              myReport.PrintOptions.PrinterDuplex = PrinterDuplex.Horizontal;
         else if (printDialog1.PrinterSettings.Duplex == System.Drawing.Printing.Duplex.Simplex)
              myReport.PrintOptions.PrinterDuplex = PrinterDuplex.Simplex;

  • How do I easily find out what playlist my songs are in?

    I'm an iTunes novice and have about 3000 songs on my computer. I've put most of them on playlists but compared some numbers and discovered that there are a couple hundred stragglers that I haven't put on playlists.
    Is there a way to quickly/easily see what playlist my songs are in? It would be great to have a "view" option column showing playlists. I know I can right-click on each individual song and do "show in playlist," but that's a real pain in the neck when you're dealing with thousands of songs.
    I'm open to any suggestions!

    Welcome to AD!
    All I can think of, is a smart playlist 'match all' where
    playlist is not playlist1
    playlist is not playlist2,
    etc
    except.....you need to leave out the main playlist, Music, from that

    Do your fields in the internal table reference dictionary objects or elementary types? If not using dictionary types, the column names will be blank by default. If you can't change your fields to be dictionary types, you can try this to change the column names:
    I made a method inside my local class to add the names:
            call method set_colname
              EXPORTING iv_tab = alv_tab
                        iv_colid = 'xxxx'  "fieldname from the table

                        iv_mtxt = text-t55
                        iv_ltxt = text-t55.
    METHOD set_colname .
      data:
              alv_cols type REF TO cl_salv_columns_table,
              alv_col type REF TO cl_salv_column.
      TRY .
    *... Change fieldnames
            call METHOD iv_tab->get_columns RECEIVING value = alv_cols.
            call method alv_cols->get_column EXPORTING columnname = iv_colid RECEIVING value = alv_col.
            IF iv_stxt <> ''.

    I got an iPhone 4 a week ago. I synced my iTunes once and now I want to change what albums and playlists are on my phone. When I try to do this, iTunes threatens to remove all my apps. Of course, Apple's support is no help. I know there has to be a way to add and remove whole albums and playlists like on the music tab on the device, so please don't tell me to uncheck/delete everything from my iTunes that I don't want and re-sync. That is not helpful and not the issue. How do I get around it threatening to remove all my apps?

    On the MacBook, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Advanced > Disable remote control

    Hi,
    The heading are in the table pt_fcat - you don't seem to be passing that in form....
    PERFORM setup_and_display_alv_ver2
    USING
    it_out_alvp "Parameter structure
    it_output[] "Internal Data table(header table)
    it_output[]. "Dummy table for Hierarchical ALV!!(item table)
    which I guessing in in one of the includes?
    Saying that the extract pof code does not show where you are calling form it_out_alv_fieldcat_before ...which populates the headings...
    Regards
    Stu

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    You might try to see if you can change your security questions. Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account > Password and Security.
    I'm able to do this, others say they need to input answers to their current security questions in order to make changes, I'm inclined to think its worth a try, you don't have anything to lose.
