What is program_error in pl/sql

sir/madam
plz answer this
program_error when it comes ,why it comes

looks like a interview question.
It comes when the program does not handle it if there is an exception encountered during execution. It alerts users or developer what's going wrong during execution.

    what's wrong with this SQL?

    Hi, everyone:
    when I insert into table, i use the fellowing SQL:
    INSERT INTO xhealthcall_script_data
    (XHC_CALL_ENDED, XHC_SWITCH_PORT, XHC_SCRIPT_ID, XHC_FAX_SPECIFIED)
    VALUES (SELECT TO_DATE(HH_END_DATE||' '||HH_END_TIME,'MM/DD/YY HH24:MI:SS'), HH_SWITCHPORT, HH_SCRIPT,'N'
    FROM tmp_healthhit_load WHERE HH_SCRIPT !='BROCHURE' UNION
    SELECT TO_DATE(HH_END_DATE||' '||HH_END_TIME,'MM/DD/YY HH24:MI:SS'), HH_SWITCHPORT, HH_SCRIPT,'N' FROM tmp_healthhit_load WHERE HH_SCRIPT !='BROCHURE');
    I always got an error like;
    VALUES (SELECT TO_DATE(HH_END_DATE||' '||HH_END_TIME,'MM/DD/YY HH24:MI:SS'), HH_SWITCHPORT,
    ERROR at line 3:
    ORA-00936: missing expression
    but I can't find anything wrong, who can tell me why?
    thank you so much in advance

    For starters, an insert select does not have a values clause.

    ...and why are you doing a UNION on the exact same two queries?
    (SELECT TO_DATE(HH_END_DATE||' '||HH_END_TIME,'MM/DD/YY HH24:MI:SS') ,HH_SWITCHPORT ,HH_SCRIPT ,'N' FROM tmp_healthhit_load WHERE HH_SCRIPT !='BROCHURE' UNION SELECT TO_DATE(HH_END_DATE||' '||HH_END_TIME,'MM/DD/YY HH24:MI:SS') ,HH_SWITCHPORT ,HH_SCRIPT ,'N' FROM tmp_healthhit_load WHERE HH_SCRIPT !='BROCHURE');

    Hi,
    thank you for your answer, but the problem is, if I deleted "values" as you pointed out, and then execute it again, I got error like "ERROR at line 3:
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel", and I was then disconnected with server, I have to relogin SQLplus, and do everything from beganing.
    so what 's wrong caused disconnection, I can't find any triggers related. it is so wired?
    I wonder if anyone can help me about this.
    thank you very much

    Hi,
    acturlly what I do is debugging a previous developer's scipt for data loading, this script was called by Cron work, but it never can be successfully executed.
    I think he use union for eliminating duplications of rows, I just guess.
    thank you

    Scratch the VALUES keyword then make sure that the select list matches the column list in number and type.
    1 insert into marktest
    2 (fld1, fld2, fld3, fld4, fld5)
    3* select * from marktest
    UT1 > /
    16 rows created.

    try this - just paste the code and give me the error- i mean past the entire error as it is if error occurs
    INSERT INTO xhealthcall_script_data
    (xhc_call_ended, xhc_switch_port, xhc_script_id,
    xhc_fax_specified)
    SELECT TO_DATE (hh_end_date || ' ' || hh_end_time, 'MM/DD/YY HH24:MI:SS'),
    hh_switchport, hh_script, 'N'
    FROM tmp_healthhit_load
    WHERE hh_script != 'BROCHURE'
    UNION
    SELECT TO_DATE (hh_end_date || ' ' || hh_end_time, 'MM/DD/YY HH24:MI:SS'),
    hh_switchport, hh_script, 'N'
    FROM tmp_healthhit_load

    thank you very much for your answer.
    but when I execute it, I still can get error like:
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    so wired, do you have any ideas?
    thank you very much

    And this one,
    Aother question about SQL?
    I thought I already told him to deal with
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    problem first.
    There's nothing wrong (syntax wise) with the query. (of course when no "value" in the insert)

  • What does || do in a SQL statement after a where with a like?

    We have a packaged application that outputs a SQL statement with the || operator in a where clause along with a LIKE. I have never seen it before and expected it to be a syntax error. I do not see any examples of this syntax in sources such as Morgan's Library.
    For example purposes, observe in the 10g Express Edition currently up for download. Observe that the SQL statement "compiles" when the || operator is used before a like statement, but does not "compile" when used on its own - it gives the error I expected that || is not a relational operator. What does this syntax do?
    For orignal context, the relevant portion of the where clause is:
    T1.QUOTE_NUM || :3 || T1.REV_NUM LIKE :4but the below does so just off of what is available in any instance - much easier to reproduce.
      1  select * from v$sqltext
      2* where (hash_value || 3657695316 || sql_text like 'L%')
    SQL> /
    no rows selected

    I may have answered my own question. It appears that you can use the || to concatenate strings for comparison with a relational operator as in the example below. I've just never seen this before. Can anyone confirm this is what it really does?
    SQL> select count(*) from dual;
      COUNT(*)
             1
    SQL> select count(*) from dual
      2  where '123' = '123';
      COUNT(*)
             1
    SQL> edit
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  select count(*) from dual
      2* where '123' = '124'
    SQL> /
      COUNT(*)
             0
    SQL> edit
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  select count(*) from dual

      COUNT(*)
             1

  • What is exactly STATISTICS in SQL Server

    hi all,
      What is exactly STATISTICS in SQL server query optimiser ?
    Thanks
    Selva

    Some good content with proper example can help you for sure.
    Link:
    http://blog.idera.com/sql-server/understanding-sql-server-statistics/
    Some part of text may give you idea
    If there’s an upcoming election and you are running for office and getting ready to go from town to town city to city with your flyers, you will want to know approximately how many flyers you’re going to bring.
    If you’re the coach of a sports team, you will want to know your players’ stats before you decide who to play when, and against who. You will often play a matchup game, even if you have 20 players, you might be allowed to play just 5 at a time, and you will
    want to know which of your players will best match up to the other team’s roster. And you don’t want to interview them one by one at game time (table scan), you want to know, based on their statistics, who your best bets are.
    Just like the election candidate or the sports coach, SQL Server tries to use statistics to “react intelligently” in its query optimization. Knowing number of records, density of pages, histogram, or available indexes help the SQL Server optimizer “guess”
    more accurately how it can best retrieve data. A common misnomer is that if you have indexes, SQL Server will use those indexes to retrieve records in your query.
    Not necessarily. If you create, let’s say, an index to a column City and <90% of the values are ‘Vancouver’, SQL Server will most likely opt for a table scan instead of using the index if it knows these stats......

  • What is diff in Open SQl and Unicode

    Hi.
    What is difference in Open SQl and Unicode.
    What are advantages of Unicode ?

    hi osk,
    <b>u cant compare open sql with unicode as both are different..</b>
    just a small explanation..
    <b>Open SQL</b> consists of a set of ABAP statements that perform operations on the central database in the R/3 System. The results of the operations and any error messages are independent of the database system in use. Open SQL thus provides a uniform syntax and semantics for all of the database systems supported by SAP. ABAP programs that only use Open SQL statements will work in any R/3 System, regardless of the database system in use. Open SQL statements can only work with database tables that have been created in the ABAP Dictionary
    <b>unicode</b>
    Data types such as CHAR ASCII and CHAR EBCDIC are mainly suited to English and central European languages. With other character sets, a code attribute is usually used for these data types. This code attribute uses a different presentation code to ASCII and EBCDIC, even for internal storage in the database system. This causes problems if you want to access these database systems using a different character set, or if you want to exchange data between database systems with different character sets.
    You can avoid these problems by using internal character coding in accordance with UNICODE. Internally, the UNICODE data is stored in UTF-16/UCS-2 format. In UTF-16/UCS-2 format, all characters are two bytes long.
    SAP DB is able to display various presentation codes in UNICODE format

  • What is the difference between SQL Server 2012 R2 & SQL Server 2014

    Hi all,
     I am using SQL Server from last 3 years. I started SQL Server 2008 R2. Now I am using SQL Server 2012. I want to change my development environment to SQL Server 2012 R2. But suddenly I saw that SQL Server 2014 is released. I want to know what are the
    differences between SQL Server 2012 R2 & SQL Server 2014. Are both those are the same or different products?
    I searched through the Internet but I didn't find any article regarding that. So could someone help me to solve this matter?

  • What's the advantage of Sql Azure?

    Hi all;
    We assumed that Sql Azure handled clustering, but apparently that feature is in beta (and has been making no progress for a long time). So what's the advantage of Sql Azure over having a VM we install Sql Server on? Because it looks to me like the VM route
    is equivalent or better (better because you don't get the occasional delay).
    I'm not trying to be antagonistic here, just trying to understand the utility of Sql Azure.
    ??? - thanks - dave

    Hi;
    First off, we've never found Sql Server all that much work. Installs easily and then we're off and running.  I understand people finding create & go a big win, but Sql Server is pretty much that already for us.
    Our use case is we are creating a cloud app that we hope to see world-wide use of it. So we want to start located in the US & Europe and use TrafficManager to send apps to the closest server. There are 2 key DB records for all the requests we'll get,
    the customer & the user.
    The user will tend to be on one continent (but not always). But the customer can have employees (users) on every continent. And for each request coming through, we need to get that customer record fast. Very very fast.
    I'm guessing that 95% (or more) of our DB activity will be selects.
    Our hope was you had Sql Azure working so it could be instantiated in each data center we have our cloud service and then each is hitting a local DB. But we need it keeping each in-sync with the other because of that customer record (and the user record
    in case of TrafficManager switching who they go to because something went down).
    This is the one thing we've never been able to get Sql Server (on our servers) to do - sync between instances. So I understand that this is hard (impossible?). But at the same time, I think many have this same need we have.
    thanks - dave

    eg<b>:... INTO (f1, ..., fn</b>)
    Places the result set in the target area (f1, ..., fn). The fields of the result set are transported to the target fields fi from left to right. INTO (f1, ..., fn) is allowed only if a list with n elements is also specified in the SELECT clause.
    <b>If the result of a selection is a table, the data is retrieved in a processing loop introduced by SELECT and concluded by ENDSELECT. The processing passes through the loop once for each line read. If the result is a single record, the closing ENDSELECT is omitted.</b>

  • What's wrong with this SQL Statement?

    I hope somebody can help explain to me what is wrong wiht the

    Name Default Value Run-Time Value
    varFirstName % Request.Form("FirstName")
    varLastName % Request.Form("LastName")

  • What is tuxedo9.1/bin/sql and how to restrict amount of memory it uses?

    Hi,
    We have AIX 5.3 server running Oracle 10.2 database and Tuxedo, a few days ago the database crashed as
    there was no free memory (this was configmed by AIX log).
    According to our monitoring (Open View) memory was consumed by two 'sql' processes
    (where 'sql' is process name): within one hour each process went from 24,000 to 800,000 memory pages.
    I searched the box and found executable named 'sq' in tuxedo9.1/bin:
    ls -l tuxedo9.1/bin/sql-r-xr-xr-x 1 abcPadm abcP 73128 Oct 24 2008 tuxedo9.1/bin/sql
    Would you be able to tell me what is this 'sql' executable and how to restrict amount
    of memory it consumes (other than through ulimit)?
    Thanks
    Sev

    Hi Sev,
    As Ian says, the SQL support in Tuxedo where Tuxedo actually provided a relational database resource manager has long been deprecated and certainly hasn't been supported in over 10 years. The Tuxedo sql program in the Tuxedo bin directory is an interactive SQL utility. I seriously doubt that it is the same executable that caused your memory problem. If it is the same executable, there isn't really much Oracle is going to be able to do for you as that component hasn't been supported for years. You would really need to change the application to use a standard supported SQL utility and relational database.

  • What  are the advantages over sql in pl/sql...can you please answer this?

    Hi,
    what are the main differences between sql and pl/sql...why v are using pl/sql rather then sql...can you please answer this question?

    SQL is used to access the database. PL/SQL is a programming language where SQL is seamlessly integrated. In order to access the database in PL/SQL, you have to use SQL.
    Think of it as two pieces of software, two "engines". If you want to interact with the database, then performance wise it's best to use only one engine (SQL only), instead of two (PL/SQL and SQL). If a PL/SQL program executes a SQL statement, it does a "context switch", i.e. saving its state in PL/SQL before giving control to the SQL engine and vice versa. This is quite fast, but do a lot of them and it is slow, so beware of programming SQL statements inside loops.
    Another way to put it: SQL is a fourth generation language (4GL) where you tell what you want, not how. The software, the optimizer, will decide for you how to process the statement. PL/SQL is a third generation language (3GL), or at least the PL-part is, where you describe how things should be processed. Leading to more code and more control. With every Oracle release, SQL becomes more powerful and the optimizer gets better, so using SQL is increasingly important.
    For complex processing, using PL/SQL is still necessary. But use it with care.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Rob.

  • What is Oracle Equivalent of SQL Profiler

    Hi All,
    Iam new to oracle world. I have a problem, I have a website which was build by someone and it uses Oracle 9i/10g as its back end and I dont have the code for that website. I have to develop an interface which simulates some of the button clicks in the web site. For achieving this i have to know what are all the tables thatare effected by the button click. If it is MS SQL world we used to put SQL Profiler and get all the SQL queries executed for that particular event. In Oracle how can we achieve this. PLease help iam in a dire necessity for this PLEASE

    I don't get it:
    If someone clearly states to be a newbie, but willing and eager to learn, if you realize that this is a community, that means: we all learn when we need to be teached and teach others when others need to learn, we SHARE KNOWLEDGE:
    Why do you suggest OP to change jobs, when he's only asked his second question on this forum???
    This forum is not about doing your work for free, and it is not for the lazy who can't be bothered to do their own work. If you are not > up to the task, consider changing jobs.Come on...you can't be serious here, either that, or you've got some human malfunction in your brain. ( bad marriage? )
    You're like:
    Create table sybrand (my_answer_is_always varchar2(16) default 'READ ORACLE DOCS' NOT NULL)
    So, whatever we insert, it doesn't matter, same resultset in return, regardless of who fires the query on table sybrand...fine, have it your way.
    Regardless of teaching a rookie or an expert.
    If you don't wanna teach/learn, and just be a repeating frame, I suggest you buzz off to the Reports Forum.

  • What's the purpose of SQL Developer's remote debug?

    AS per SQL Developer's "Remote debuggin", the user guide says "To debug a function or procedure for a
    connection where the database is on a different
    host than the one on which you are running SQL Developer, you can perform remote debugging."
    I'm confused what's the prupose to do a remote debugging? Could you please give me a
    scenario to help me clarify this term?
    Thank you!
    Jeff

    Mmm, don't know if the database should really be on another host, but anyway it would be a characteristic, not a definition.
    Remote debugging differs from normal debugging in the origin of the debugged session:
    For normal debugging, you start a new session from within sqldev (local) and hook into the debugger (pretty easy and automated). For remote debugging, you hook whatever existing session (started from whatever program) on whatever host (remote) into the debugger (a bit more manual as you have to include the call to hook into the debugger yourself). Very useful for debugging remote sessions over a database link or a particular remote user situation which cannot be reproduced locally.
    Have fun,
    K.

  • What is wrong with my SQL Statement

    I am getting errors when trying to apply an SQL statement to a report, and I can't figure it out. The error reads: "Syntax error (missing operator) in the query expression 'Title = "Sales Representative"'. Could someone please tell
    me where it is I have gone wrong? The statement is suppose to show records of employees that have Sales Representative as their Title. This is what I came up with:
    SELECT * FROM Employees WHERE Title = “Sales Representative”

    Try putting brackets around table and field names.
    I found wrong kind of double quote also ---
    SELECT [Employees].* FROM [Employees] WHERE
    [Employees].[Title] = "Sales Representative";
    Build a little, test a little

    I have checked the database column and its value fits according the data type.Check again. Then check again. Keep checking until you find your error. You are trying to read a string containing "Sarawak" as a number. You have "getInt(6)" or other numeric type, and the 6th column in the select statement is not numeric.
