What is responsible for phantom usage? (a 36-hour test)

There is a ghost in my iPhone 4S/5.0.1 that is mysteriously ramping up the usage and consuming cellular data when the phone is dormant (sitting on table, no apps running, no user interaction of any kind). I've just completed an 36 hour test monitoring the charge state ot the battery. Throughout the test, the iPhone was a few feet from an active WiFi acaccess point (Airport Express), and several blocks from a GSM cell tower.  Every few hours, I clicked the Home button, noted the usage and cellular data consumption, and put it back to sleep.
Friday 11pm. The iPhone had been in its dock all evening, and the battery was fully charged. Usage, as reported by Settings/General/Usage was 0 minutes. Cellular data = 5.0 MB sent, 33.1 MB received.
Sat 11 am. Battery at 93%. Usage = 11 minutes. Data 5.0/33.2
Sat 2pm. Battery at 89%
Sat 5pm. Battery at 87%. Usage = 24 minutes.
Sat 11pm. Battery at 82%. Usage = 31 minutes. Data 5.1/33.5.
Sun 8am. Battery at 77%. Usage = 39 minutes.
Sun 11am. Battery at 75%. Usage = 42 minutes. Data 5.1/33.5
As you can see, the battery discharged 25% over the 36 hour test. From this, one can extrapolate that the standby time would be 144 hours (6 days), significantly less than Apple's claimed standby of (up to) 200 hours. However, I had WiFi and Bluetooth on. Apple's 200 hour claim is no doubt a best-case measure obtained with everything other than the cellular radio active.
More troubling is the usage that was reported: 42 minutes over the 36 hour test.  The iPhone was completely dormant (sleeping) throughout the test, except for the 6 times that I poked it to read the battery meter and the usage stats. The screen was on for perhaps 15 seconds each time. From an end-user perspective, I used it for about 1.5 minutes, not 42 minutes.  Perhaps the iOS usage measurement rounds up to the nearest minute each time (just like cellphone carriers measure phone calls), in which case, I was (arguably) responsible for 6 minutes worth of 'usage'.
My question: who or what is responsible for the rest of the 42 minutes of usage reported by iOS? I'd like to know what processes account for the reported 42 minutes. Who or what triggered them, and why are they counted as part of my "usage"?
I know what was not responsible. I don't have iCloud activated. There is no Mail being pushed, or Mail being fetched. I don't have an Exchange account. WiFi Sync is off. Location Services is turned on, but none of my apps that employ Location Services were active (Maps, Google, Camera+, etc). Knowing that they're power hogs, I have disabled most of the System Services that use Location Services (Diagnostics & Usage, iAds, Setting Time Zone and Traffic are all off). Cell Network Search is on, but the iPhone wasn't moving, had a nice strong GSM signal, and had no need to be searching for different cell towers.
If my six  'meter reading' events do account for 6 minutes of usage, that leaves 42-6=36 minutes unaccounted for. Perhaps it's a coincidence, but the test ran over 36 hours. I wonder if some system-level process is triggered once an hour or so, and gets counted by the iOS usage meter.
The other anomaly that my test revealed is the celluar data that was sent/received. It's very small, and certainly won't kill my data plan. But I have to wonder why any cellular data was flowing. The iPhone had a solid WiFi connection throughout. If iOS had need to send or receive some data in the background, why did it use the (expensive) cellular data channel instead of the (free) WiFi channel?

Page 22 of this document will give you some numbers that will allow you to estimate the total data used for a meeting. Keep in mind these numbers are what Adobe saw as average consumption, yours may be higher or lower.

My PowerBook G4 1.33 GHZ with 256MB RAM was giving messages about needing to restart on each start-up attempt. Of interest when the the AirPort wireless card (that had not been working) was removed, the restart problem resolved. When the AirPort card was re-inserted, it functioned correcly allowing connections to a wireless router. The restart message did not return and the computer appeared to be functioning normally. Also of note I had reinstalled the system software and had run multiple updates thinking that the intial restart error messages were related to a system software problem. Now, when I run the Apple Hardware Test the first three items "pass" (AirPort, Logic Board, Mass Storage) but, after about 3 minutes of testing the nest topic, "Memory," the screen turns green and blue (reminiscent of the dreaded "blue screen" in Windows). I have to power off the computer and it will restart without problems. Of note the Apple Hardware Test did the same thing before I reinstalled the system software and re-installed the AirPort card. Thanks Rodney! Your explanation was correct. I had not waited long enough for the test process to complete. When I watched carefully, it was not until just after the memory section and the beginning of the V RAM testing that the screen started to change apperances. There were multiple changes until finally the original dialogue box reappered. I had previously been too impatient.

  • Phantom Usage When In Standby

I started a thread when the OS was at 2.0 about phantom usage:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8136179
Thought it would go away in 2.1... but it hasn't:
    http://gallery.me.com/wsuschmitt#100019/IMG_0001&bgcolor=black
I believe that the iPhone 3G has a flaw in the OS that doesn't shut off the processor and drains the battery through what I'm calling "phantom usage"; that is, accumulated usage time on the iPhone 3G even when not using it.
I understand a bit of time will be used under "push" conditions, but if you take a look at the screenshot in the gallery link above, you'll see that of the 18 hours of being off the charger, there is 10 to 11 hours of usage. Problem is, 8 of those 18 hours was spent by me sleeping, and another 8 hours was spent at work. I know I'm not using the iPhone while sleeping and I don't have time to use the phone constantly while at work.
So, of the 18 hours of being off the charger, I can probably account for MAYBE 2 hours of use. Where did the other 8 to 9 hours (for a total of 10h 52 min) of usage come from? This phantom usage is killing me, as I have to charge the phone 1-2 times a day to get any real use out of it.
Anyone else still have phantom usage on their phones after upgrading to 2.1?
Anyone know how to kill the phantom usage? Again, there were lots of suggestions in the thread above, but none of them worked for me.
The phantom usage is there even when push is turned off, WiFi is off, there are no additional applications, and the phone is set to auto-lock after 3 minutes.
    This is my second iPhone.
The phantom usage seems to disappear after a fresh restore without a backup of the iPhone for about a day, but then the battery life disappears and the phantom usage starts up again after a couple of days.

This reply is from a NEW user that has only had my IP 3G for 3 weeks.
Since we don't have a process explorer, that I know of, to verify this...I read that most of the apps you open continue to run if you hit the home button. The ONLY way to stop the apps from continuing to run is when you quit an app is to hold the home button for up to 10 seconds until the screen goes blank and then release to return to the home page. This will shut down the app completely.
The other option is (and it seems to be true by the response above) is to shut off the device with the power switch to stop all applications and restart. The user I read about says he does it a least once per day.
I would suggest we try both ways to verify the results by
    - complete app shut down with the extra long home button hold
    - OR shutting off main power once per day
    then compare the results.
I know I myself have tried both and they seem to help but I haven't monitored the usage data figures.
I will start to take note of these and see if either option helps.

Do you happen to have an Android?  If so and depending on what version there is a great data usage analyse tool built-in.  See if you can go to Settings -> Data Usage  from there you can pick a current or previous billing cycle and then use the vertical sliders to select a date range and it will filter the usage data per app to show you exactly what app(s) were using data during that time frame.

  • Phantom Usage - iPhone Auto Update of Apps - How to turn off?

Since upgrading to 2.2 the "Usage" of my phone has gone way up. Example, my phone since last charge has been on for 2 day 17 hours 15 minutes. My call time has been 35 minutes, however my usage time has been 2 hours 55 minutes. I talked to Apple and they have had reports on "Phantom" usage. That is Apps and system software not shutting down. All the rep could do was to make me an appointment with the Apple Store 3 hours away.
Under setting's I have about 10 Apps that are in the "AutoUpdate Settings List". I think this could be the problem. How the heck do I turn this Auto Update Off????
    Thanks

I've had my phone come back from sleep with the red number around app store when I haven't opened app store lately. I thought that was a normal feature, like mail.
You mean it should not do that?
I cannot find any setting which controls it however.
PS. I have no idea if maybe it is getting that info through itunes sync or wifi or wireless or what -- I just know it mysteriously pops up without me looking.

  • Verizon is billing me for data I simply DID NOT USE - huge unexplainable usage every 6 hours - and no one can explain it

My wife and I both had iphone 4S' on verizon for years with no issues.  My wife recently upgraded to an Iphone 5c and ever since her data usage has gone through the roof.  After talking wtih Apple and Verizon countless times and getting no answers, im reaching out to the community.
The issue is very VERY obvious in that our detail usage breakdown shows my wife being charged for some data usage every 6 hours for stuff she never did.  And, to make matters worse, my wife is home most of the time connected to wifi!   I don't know what it is, but something, somewhere, which on one can explain, is generating huge amounts of data usage on my wife's iphone 5c ( my phone is fine ).  I will attach a sample picture below which shows just one or two days of this, but this happens every dingle day.
I want to upgrade my phone and actually get a third line, but im scared to hit this issue on two more phones.  I dont know whats going on here and why no one can give me a straight answer.  As far as im concerned verizon is scamming us by injecting this usage and hitting people with overages.
    Some points:
         - random usage on a clear 6 hour cycle
         - some of the usage is clearly in the middle of the night when we're asleep
         - MOST of the usage is when the phone is home connected to wifi
         - we have turned off background refresh
         - we reset cell data usage in settings and viewed it the next day, it did NOT show the usage verizon is charging me for
I've seen other posts here and on apple discussion forums with other people having the same exact issue! I want ANSWERS or im going to have to cancel my contract and move to AT&T, which I would really hate to do because other than this verizon has been great!  I've also seen some people mention that verizon polls for usage data every 6 hours, can there be some bug there that is making it use WAAAY more data than needed? ( perhaps an intentional revenue generating bug...??? )
    Please HELP!
    Thanks
    - Rob
    USAGE:

Hi .... I to have ridiculous charges...I went into verizon tonight and talked to a manager about my data usage which is **...I just got the iphone 5c on Saturday......I showed him how the phone says I used data while wifi and cellular data was TURNED OFF.....we reset  my data to 0 and he watched me turn on cellular data and I went into my APPADVISOR app ....it is a clean app which uses minimal data compared to the internet...I was in the app 10 seconds and I got out quick and made sure the app was no longer running in the background.....we watched me get charged for 6mb of data in 10 seconds which was not only in my settings , but reflected real time in my verizon app that checks my data usage which is what my billing is based on
...I have unlimited talk, text with my 4gig of data sharing I have with my wife that we pay 70 bucks per phone a month........he then watched me text my brother on iMessage and get charged 16kb....I message should be free of data....we then went to ESPN for another counted 10 seconds and I got charged 4.8 MB.....the manager was dumbfounded by me showing this to him in real time......he stated the following which I hope is not a lie:
APPLE AND VERIZON ARE AWARE AND BEING FLOODED WITH DATA USAGE ISSUES WHICH SEEM TO BE REFLECTING SPIKED DATA CHARGES FOR THE IPHONE 5c and 5s ONLY.......APPLE IS COMING OUT WITH IOS 7.0.5 in the next week to fix these issues.....he gave me his card and he took my information and said if in this billing cycle I go over 4 gig of data, he will eat the overage fee.....we shall see what all transpires in the coming weeks but there is something jacked on apples or Verizon's end with the 5c and 5s phones...

  • HP desktop computer can not play Blu-ray DVDs. Who is responsible for this?

In 2010, I blought an HP Pavilion Elite HPE 250-f desktop computer (running Windows 7). This computer was advertised as having a Blu-ray DVD player, as well as players for regular DVDs and CDs. All these years, I've been successfully playing regular DVDs and CDs. Until now, I have not attempted to play a Blu-ray DVD.
I recently rented the "Divergent" Blu-ray DVD (as well as the "Divergent" regular DVD) from my local library. When I tried to play the Blu-ray DVD, the HP MediaSmart software and the Windows Media Player detected the Blu-ray but were not able to play the Blu-ray.
I then downloaded the Media Player Codec Pack, http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html    This Codec Pack was supposed to help Windows Media Player play the Blu-ray. That did not work. When I got rid of the Codec Pack using System Restore, HP MediaSmart and Windows Media Player became unable to detect the Blu-ray in the Blu-ray drive. After another System Restore, HP MediaSmart and Windows Media Player were once again able to detect the Blu-ray (but were still unable to play the Blu-ray).
I then downloaded Cyberlink PowerDVD 14, which played the Blu-ray for only about 7 seconds before crashing. I then got rid of Cyberlink PowerDVD 14 with a System Restore.
I downloaded TotalMedia Theatre version 6.0.1.123. However, this software did not detect the Blu-ray. I then got rid of TotalMedia Theatre with a System Restore. After that, I was not able to play ANYTHING, including CDs and regular DVDs. CDs and regular DVDs were not being detected by playing software. After another System Restore, I was once again able to play CDs and regular DVDs. However, I do not want to risk trying to play the Blu-ray again.
So, what's going on here? HP advertised this computer as having a Blu-ray DVD player. Wasn't HP responsible for providing software that could play Blu-ray DVDs? And why is the Blu-ray DVD, sometimes detected, and sometimes not detected, by playing software? Is there some kind of hardware issue?
Who is responsible for the fact that my computer can not play Blu-ray DVDs? HP, for bad playing software and/or bad hardware? Or is there something in the Windows 7 operating system that prevents the playing of Blu-ray DVDs? Is Microsoft responsible?
    Thanks for any information.

You're not going to get any help from HP or Microsoft on a 4 year old computer.   Maybe your optical drive is no longer able to play Bluray discs.  Windows 7 Media Center with Bluray playback was not included in all versions of Windows 7.  Each computer with Bluray has an individual license; yours may have expired after not using it for 4 years.  Best advice - don't flog a dead horse.  Just get regular DVDs.

  • Exporting for Web Usage

Hi. I have no doubt this has been discussed, but am hoping I can get a more concrete answer. I would like to export some shorts to put on my web site. I know there is a balance to be struck between quality and file size, but the choices that can be made with settings leaves me confused.
I am using the latest version of Final Cut Studio Pro. What are best settings based on people's experience to export for web usage? This would ideally be a quicktime file in the end.
    Thanks.

I usually use Sorenson 3, quarter screen size and they usually come out pretty manageable. I would use the H.264 codec but I want to be sure all who come to my site and view the Quicktimes and some people don't have QT v.7 yet.
Allow me a shameless plug as well: http://www.scottsimmons.tv/
If you look at any clips on my site and save them as a quicktime movie, then open them an playback in Quicktime player, you can hit command + i and see the movie info where you can see exact specs on each clip. That can give you an idea of quality and file size. It's really an imperfect science.

  • Need help identifying the application responsible for an insert...

    Hi,
I'm a MSSQL guy and Oracle is still a bit mysterious to me.  I'm looking for some assistance tracking down the application in an environment which is responsible for particular inserts.
For example, suppose I have 10 different programs running and inserting values to a DB.  I need to know which one of them inserts a "0" in a particular column.
I found a trigger which will tell me the user, unfortunately these programs use a shared credential so that doesn't help me.... here's what I've got:
    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER check_for_zero_insert
    AFTER INSERT
      ON DATA_TABLE_0001
      FOR EACH ROW
    DECLARE
      v_username varchar2(10);
    BEGIN
-- Find username of person performing the INSERT into the table
      SELECT user INTO v_username
      FROM dual;
-- Insert record into audit table
      INSERT INTO audit_table
      ( samplevalue
      sampletime,
      username )
      VALUES
      ( :sampletime,
      :samplevalue
       v_username );
    END;
But again, username won't help me, I need the originating process if at all possible (either an executable name, PID, or something to identify the specific application on the other side.)

    use this in your trigger
    select sys_context('USERENV','OS_USER') ||'-' ||user  into v_username from dual;
You might need to increase the v_username data type length.
