What is the number in the terminal dock icon?

Since I upgrade my iMac and it's now Lion, my terminal dock icon has a little red circle with "1" in it, similar to the one Thunderbird has that shows how many unread messages there are.  There are a dozen terminal windows, and none are actively running processes, so I'm not sure what "1" could be indicating, and Terminal "Help" is about as useful as Mac Help ever is - i.e. not at all...

It's a new feature in Lion and it tells you that one of your tabs has new content in it. The number corresponds to the number of tabs with new content.
BTW the tab with thte new content will have a little bell in it if it isn.t the current tab.

  • What is the termination fee?

    Hi,
I'm planning on cancelling my 2 yr agreement and was wondering what is the termination fee? I did an upgrade last march of 2014 ... I was just wondering if anyone knows so I could plan ahead.
    Thanks!

  • Is there a way to open a new tab/window by clicking the Safari dock icon?

Is there a way to open a new tab or window by clicking the Safari dock icon? Right now, the default behavior seems to be that Safari simply un-minimizes or displays the last window in focus.
I want to be able to quickly fire up a new tab or window in Safari when it is out of focus, such as when Finder is in focus. The workaround right now is to right-click on the Safari dock icon, and select "New Window", or to allow the last window in focus to appear, and cmd+t or cmd+n. But this is too many steps over the course of a day for a highly frequented task like this.

I'm glad that helped. Thanks for posting back.
... when I save this as an application as "run only", it's relatively quick to run, but there's a delay to load... I assume it's opening Script Editor every time?
As long as the script is saved as an application -- Run Only or not -- it should definitely not cause the Script Editor to open. You can verify this by closing the Script Editor application altogether prior to clicking on the docked script icon that you saved. You should notice that the Script Editor does not open when the script is run.
FWIW, I went back and saved a version of the script as a Run Only app, and I didn't notice any difference between it and the original, which was saved without the Run Only option checked. The delay that you're noticing might be accounted for by the fact that the script, because it was saved as an application, will be activated just as any other standalone application would be. This happens prior to Safari being activated. Watch your menu bar when clicking on the docked script icon and you should see the name of the saved script app appear for a split second before Safari gets activated.
The only time I can think of that you might wish to save the script as a Run Only application would be if you wanted to conceal the script for some reason. If, for example you were publishing the script as a part of an application release and didn't want its contents known, or you didn't want an end user to be able to edit the script, you might select the Save As > Run Only option. To illustrate this, try dragging and dropping a script saved as a Run Only application onto the Script Editor's icon. You should see a warning dialog to this effect:
*Unable to read the file because the script is not editable (it was saved as run-only).*
Whereas if you drag a script that was not saved as a Run Only app onto the Script Editor's icon, the script should open in the Editor, and it can be edited.
I played around with the "stay open" option for saving the script as an application, but it appears I have to close the app and reopen it before I can get it to work a second time.
The Stay Open option is appropriate for scripts which use an "On Idle" handler, which really wouldn't apply in this case. Check out more on Idle Handlers here and here.
Is there a faster way to use this multiple times throughout the day?
One way you might speed up the action would be to save the script +as a script+ by choosing Save As > File Format: script from the Script Editor's File menu. The resulting script can then be activated by assigning a hot key to it using one of several 3rd-party keyboard shortcut programs available on the Internet. (I used Spark, assigned a function key to the script I posted earlier, and found the action to run significantly faster.)
    Good luck.

  • What causes the rainbow swirling icon that locks a program such as address book?

What causes the rainbow swirling icon that locks a program such as address book? And how do I get out of it?

The Finder is just assigning the wrong kind and icon to what I presume are plist files. Often rebuilding the Launch Services will cure this, but sometimes Finder gets a strange bee in its bonnet about some particular combination of characteristics and what they mean, and it can't be dissuaded. Unless you are opening plist files, and get really annoyed when you double click one and Address Book launches and announces "wrong type of file" you can just ignore it. In my own ~/Library/Prefences folder plists are generally labeled correctly, probably because I have them assigned to open with Apple's own Property List Editor. But there are some other preferences that Finder has decided are something altogether different than what they are: WingNuts Prefs and Saved Games are both believed to be Eudora preferences; a whole batch of other prefs from a dozen differenct programs are described as TextWrangler preferences, and there's a another group thought to be Unix Executables. As long as the program they belong to isn't having a problem finding and writing to them, don't worry about it.

Sounds like a Gmail archive icon. "When you archive a message, it moves to the All Mail folder. It does not delete it from the Gmail account. Archive replaces all delete options when using a Gmail account, including using the Trash icon while viewing a message and selecting Edit to manage multiple messages. Assuming the 3 line are smartphones the ETF would be $600 total. Basic phones would be $300.  An sorry you were lied to by at&t. That's price is not taking into account the cost of the phones.
    30 GB $130
    5 Line $15 each=$75
    total $205
However you also have to pay for the phones. Assuming the cheapest iPhone 6 and assuming you chose the 24 month payment plan that's another $135 a month. So $340 total. And you'll have to pay the sales tax on those phones upfront or on your first bill. What the sales tax on $3250 in your area?

  • What does the terminal do

When I open my Mac the terminal lists the time and date.  I am finding another time and date, usually a few minutes after my initial log-in.  Am I being Hacked?

    Doesn't mean a thing.
First time I opened it since starting up today, it gave the time of 9:58. Two minutes behind what the clock on the desktop said. Closed Terminal and immediately launched it again. Then it gave the nonsense time of:

  • What is the Terminal command to determine whether booted in 32 or 64 bit mode?

I understand some newer computers are using the 64 bit kernel by default: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770
How do I determine via the command line whether I'm booted in 32 bit mode or 64 bit mode?

To make your Mac always start up 64 bit  the only thing necessary is to alter one line of a configuration file. You can do that by opening the Terminal and entering:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' 'arch=x86_64'
To return to 32 bit mode, you would repeat the command but enter an empty string, which would just be the single quotes (where arch=x86_64 is) with nothing in between.
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' ''

  • What is the terminal command in OS X SL for enabling my touchpad?

When I boot into the install disc I can use the terminal, but not the touchpad. I can't get past the choosing of a hard disk w/o using my touchpad. Thanks!

If your touchpad is not working in the installer, it is Broke!
The Installer software is an incorruptible, "one size fits all" software, provided you are using an Installer appropriate for your Mac.
Installer Software older than the version that was on your Mac when it was new will not work.
Installer Software for a different Mac will not work because it will not contain drivers for your Hardware.

  • What is it that makes the Downloads dock icon bounce?

    Alex,
I had no other way to get in touch other than post on this thread. I would like to discuss with you an archived thread you started concerning the Pirelli router, WDS, and Airport Express.
I am in Athens as well and have a similar issue. So far, I am concluding that the Pirelli WDS protocol is different than the Apple. I cannot seem to solve the problem of extending the network using an Airport as a remote access point. Can you advise?
    Cheers, Stuart
