What's H.264?

What's H.264? Can one make H.264 type FLV's or is it an whole different format?  Can it be imported into flash?

Hi,
All I can tell you know is to search here http://theflashblog.com/ . It's probably in the 2nd Flasher Magazine, but I might be wrong.

  • What chokes H.264 footage: data rate or video dimensions?

I apologize for posting in here but this board is SO much better than the Quicktime or Compressor boards, and it's all the same workflow anyhow!
What I'm wondering is what chokes H.264 videos. Is it low bit rates? High bit rates? Big dimensions? I have an 854x480 video at 500kbps and it looks great, but even on my PowerMac there is slight stuttering, and some alpha tester feedback I've gotten tells me that a lot of slower computers are choking on the video badly.
The file size is ridiculously small, so if increasing the data rate makes it easier to decode, that would be nice.

It's neither - or either, if you will. H.264 achieves unprecedented levels of compression, which means that it's a lot more CPU-intensive to play back in real time. It simply doesn't play well on older hardware. Even slower G5s for example have problems playing back full HD H.264, particularly if it's progressive. It also depends on your GPU - certain GPUs support H.264 decoding, thus significantly offloading the CPU.
One general rule, though: the higher your data rate at any given frame size and frame rate, the less work the decoder needs to do. I'd try to go for approx. 800 kbps at your chosen frame size and see if that helps.

  • H.264 What is the best use for this? H.264 Pros & Cons?

I wanted to know since I am using DV what if any role can H.264 play in my workflow? What are the intended or best uses for this? What are H.264 pros and cons? Will it produce higher quality than DV?
As always thanks in advance for reading and replying to my post,
    Sebastian

It will not make DV look better, it is a MPEG4 based compression format for material to be delivered over the web. As such, encoding your material to it it is the last step in the editing process.

  • H.264 deblocking in Flash player

    Hi,
I am reading about video class Deblocking but the available values are for Sorenson and On2 VP6 codecs, what about H.264 which currently is the most widely used video codec on the internet, how to apply deblocking for it?
Also, does smoothing property apply for H.264 video?
    Thanks

Thanks. We were able to solve the issue by increasing the bandwidth. The next issue we are facing is that we want to connect multiple cams to the same machine and have fast switching with each cam back and forte. The issue is that there is a freeze on the current stream before switching to the new stream and from the broadcaster side it takes a bit before the cam switches . Getting the fast switching is our goal at this point.

  • What is the best final export Format?

    Hello everybody,
I just my first short movie using Red Camera. And I made my editing and color correction using Adobe premiere & After effect.
But, as I am a beginner in editing, I need your help about the exporting format that I can choose to have the final video of the movie.
I already tried to export in full HD quality (without any compression), but the result, of course, was too much big to be played.
I exported to H264, but after what I red, it make too much compression and it's made for web streaming.
I know that DCP would be helpful for a cinema screening, but I want to have a video with the best quality so I can show it to Producers and TV broadcasters.
So what is the best final export format I can have with adobe premiere Pro?
Thank you in advance for your answer.

The question is HOW do you want to share it with people? Will you email it to them, play it on your laptop or a tablet, website, what? H.264 is a good codec for sharing - it's the same codec used for Blu-ray, so it is NOT a "web quality" necessarily, all depends on the encoding settings used. H.264 is pretty universal as far as playback, versus other formats and codecs.
    Thanks

  • CUDA acceleration of H.264 in Sorenson Squeeze

I was checking out the Squeeze forums, and I found the following article: Sorenson Media Forum - Mainconcept H.264/AVC CUDA. I suspect it's a "whoops" posting since Squeeze 7 hasn't been released, much less announced on Sorenson's website. The article describes the implications and requirements to achieve GPU-accelerated H.264 encoding.
Here are a few interesting snippets, in case the article disappears:
    Mainconcept H.264/AVC CUDA Requirements
In order to take advantage of GPU acceleration of MainConcept H.264/AVC, the following is required:
    Squeeze 7 or later.
nVidia video card with CUDA support (any GeForce 8, 9, 100, 200-series GPUs, Fermi, Tesla and Quadro with a minimum of 512 MB.
CUDA architecture 1.1 (any card except of 8800 GTS, 8800 Ultra, 8800
GTX and some Teslas and Quadros). CUDA architecture 1.0 to 1.3 implies a
Tesla video card. CUDA architecture of 2.0 implies a Fermi video card.
Windows, XP, Vista, Windows 7 (32-bit/64-bit).
Minimum nVidia Driver version v196.21 (no Fermi support)
Minimum nVidia Driver version v196.47 (Fermi support)
    OS X 10.5.7 or later.
Minimum nVidia CUDA Driver version 3.1.14
Minimum nVidia GPU Driver version 19.5.9f02
The memory requirements are unfortunately not as
straightforward as they would seem.  Each resolution requires a
different amount of memory, but not all of the memory on the card is
necessarily available to the Mainconcept H.264/AVC CUDA encoder. If the
encoder is not able to allocate enough memory, the encoder will fail.
Because of this, meeting the minimum memory requirements is not a
guarantee that a particular video card is capable of encoding in the
specified resolution. Therefore, it is recommended that the minimum
memory requirements should be exceeded when purchasing a new video card.
Selecting an nVidia CUDA-Enabled Video Card
The most important factor is choosing a CUDA card is the number of cores
that the GPU has. The more GPU cores a card has, the better the
performance will be. Although the minimum required memory size is 512
MB, it is recommended to buy a card with more memory.
nVidia provides a list of all CUDA-enabled products at
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_gpus.html.
When choosing an nVidia card with CUDA support, remember that the
“Compute Capability” must be 1.1 or greater and the memory size must be
    at least 512 MB.
When choosing an nVidia card with CUDA support for a Mac, make sure that
the Mac’s model identifier is compatible with the nVidia card. For
example, the “Quadro FX 4800” will only work with a Mac with a model
identifier of “MacPro3,1” or “MacPro4,1”. You can find the model
    identifier by doing the following:
    Go to “About This Mac”
Click on the “More Info” button
    Select “Hardware”
Some nVidia video cards actually contain two nVidia video cards
(GeForce GTX 295 or GeForce 9800 GX2 for example). The Mainconcept
H.264/AVC CUDA encoding will use only one half of such video cards.
Multiple, simultaneous Mainconcept H.264/AVC CUDA encodes in Squeeze can
share the same nVidia video card. If there are several nVidia video
cards in your system, multiple simultaneous Mainconcept H.264/AVC CUDA
encodes can use different video cards.
When using two or more NVIDIA cards in the same system, the cards need
to use the same NVIDIA driver to avoid conflicts. For this reason,
GeForce and Quadro cards should not be used in the same system. When
using two or more NVIDIA cards in the same system, it would be best if
    they were the same card.
    H.264/AVC CUDA Encoder Feature Restrictions
Mainconcept H.264/AVC CUDA Encode has the following restrictions.
Only supports One and Two pass VBR – no CBR or Multi-pass.
    Does not support “Interlace Mode”.
    Only supports one B-Frame.
Does not support “Use B-Slices as Reference”.
    Does not support “Reference Frames”.
    Does not support “Multiple Slices”.
Does not support “Black Normalization Level”.
Does not support HRD – no Blu-Ray.
I think the most interesting part is the list of restrictions. As far as I'm concerned, those restrictions make this feature largely pointless, since most of them are what make H.264 so effective at low bitrates and at large frame sizes. I wonder if these restrictions are due to the Mainconcept encoder itself, or just that Sorenson rushed to get this "feature" into the upcoming version of Squeeze without implementing it fully.
In any event, it's interesting to see how the GPU can actually be leveraged for encoding, and not just rendering as it is with hardware-accelerated MPE in CS5.

Tmpgenc uses cuda when frameserving from CS5.
However GPU-z shows a lower percentage then TMPGenc does during encoding.

  • Cant find the movie in my ipod classic 80gb.

First i could not import the movie to itunes, but i changed the name to something shorter and then it came in to Itunes. And now i cant find it in my ipod. the movie is .Mp4 och it a H.264 codec (i dont know what that h.264 means...). But i have a other movie thats .mp4 and h.264 too, and that movie is in my ipod. why??

A spelling or punctuation mistake, or sometimes a trailing space usually causes this after the artists and/or song name, which fools the iPod into thinking that there are two different artists or songs. The trailing space is the hardest to spot.
Best way to cure this is to go into iTunes, highlight that artist and/or songs, right click on them and select "get info".
This brings up the multiple song info window. In the artist or song box retype the name, as you would like it, and then click ok. Do this even if no mistakes are immediately visible.
Re sync this new artist/song info to your iPod.

  • Adobe encore the software that's used to decode the media is not available on this system. installing the correct decoders for the file you are working with may help correct the problem

    Hi,
I got this message after importing about ten or so H.264 files that I encoded from Adobe media encoder.  "adobe encore the software that's used to decode the media is not available on this system. installing the correct decoders for the file you are working with may help correct the problem."
The files we're shot with HD cameras.  Edited in Premiere Pro CS3.  I installed the update 3.0.1 with still the same error.
I also tried a brand new project and after about ten or so files being imported into a timeline, the system crash.  I tried this twice....
        Thanks in Advance

    Hi Hunt,
Here is the skinny.  A window base PC.  footage shot with HD sony HD cameras,  Project imported to Premiere CS3.  Once completed sent file to Adobe media encoder and render them as H.264 widescreen high Quality.  Imported them to Adobe Encore CS3.  After about ten files or so.  I got the error message.  Did all the basic trouble shoot like restarting the computer, got latest patch.  Even build a new test project with the same problem.
Something else I read in the forums, is the encore will transcoded the project to Mpeg 2 anyway, after looking at my project I realized those few files were indeed untranscoded.  So it will be a double compression and I dont want that.  So, my new question is, what is H.264 good for ?????????? I was research that Mpeg 2 is a faster render but H.264 is a slower render but better quality.....
       what do you think ????

  • Audio Encoding & Ken Burns Problems Persist - More Help Please.

My previous thread (10/27): Encoding Audio in iDVD for 41 hours. Is there any hope?
--72min iMovie, many high res photos, iTunes music, voiceovers, sound effects (20.9G)
    Since then:
I reimported Music Store songs from CD and tried iMovie to iDVD again , menu took 50min, video encoding took 4.5hrs, audio encoding went 12 hours till I force quit. (Should I have waited longer?)
I then was able to create a Quicktime Movie (Full Quality) in 36hrs, but the Ken Burns photos were so horrific (shimmering) that I decided to try creating a Disk Image. Is there any chance the results will be better? (Burn w/Toast6)
I also tried exporting iMovie to my JVC GR-DVP3 video camera. Only got colored checkerboard patterns.
If the Disk Image approach doesn't work, I'll be back at square one. Anything else I might try?

Wow, this sounds like a long time. Is this DV? Or
    H.264?
The extension is .dv What is H.264
Remember that iDVD will create standard resolution
video, even if you are feeding it HD material. So
use Export> Quicktime> Full Quality DV.
    I did.
The shimmering might improve once it is burned to
disk, but it might not. I also find it is different
on different players. PhotoToMovie does a better job
    than iMovie/iPhoto of avoiding shimmers.
I heard that, but it took me 2 weeks to make my movie and at present I can't bear the thought of redoing all my KB photos.
I also tried exporting iMovie to my JVC GR-DVP3
video camera. Only got colored checkerboard
    patterns
Check the iMovie forum for this one, but it sure
seems that something must not be hooked up right.
    Was it in VCR mode?
I have a post on the iMovie forum, iMovie recognized the camera and it recorded, but all I got was sporadic patterns. The manual shows DV to DV operations but no computer to DV. Maybe my camera isn't compatable.

  • Slideshow and video (.mov) files

When I import photos (.JPG) and movies (.MOV) from my camera to the ipad, they appear as an 'ALBUM' and I can run a slideshow on the ipad that will show both photos and movies in the sequence that they were taken. However, when I import the same photos and movies onto my pc, and then sync the ipad with the pc, the movie files show as 'unable to be synced'
The same photos and movies still show as 'ALBUMS' and are duplicated on the ipad under both 'PHOTOS' and 'ALBUMS'.
I can run a slideshow under PHOTOS that will include the 'imported' movies.
Does anyone know why the sync rejects these movie files - the ipad is happy to accept them from the camera?

Unfortunately, if you don't have (or want to use) the CCK, you may run into problems with a lot more cameras. In most cases, this is caused by the so-called “H.264 level”. While CCK does import videos with, theoretically, incompatible levels (that is, over 4.1), iTunes in no way synchronizes the same videos without your manually decreasing the level first. Most Canon cameras that record 1080p24 videos belong here (they use level 5.0); the most notable exception is the new, high-end Canon EOS 5D Mark III, which not only records audio into AAC instead of the far more storage-unfriendly PCM, but also uses lower and iOS-compatible H.264 levels (4.0 for 1080p and 3.1 for 720p videos).
That is, first, try finding out what the H.264 level of your videos are and change them with Subler. If Subler can't change it, use other apps to do it. Read  http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/making-stock-videos-application-play-every-mp4 -files-possible for a full tutorial (the Subler link is at the bottom). It's about synching for the "Videos" app; however, the same also applies to synching photos back in the "Photos" tab.
BTW, what camera model is that?

  • Quicktime ..... does anyone actually use it ?

Well, I have to use it because a client has requested a copy of a 60 minute short film as a quicktime movie.
Now let me begin by saying that I have this as both a divx and a wmv file at full resolution (720x405) and for the most part it looks virtually uncompressed. It looks great, almost identical to the vob off of a dvd i created. SO, near dvd quality.
Here's my findings trying to make a quicktime i can upload to an ftp server, rendering out of after effects 7.0 and with quicktime pro installed (the latest version)
Sorenson movie at a huge 40mb looks so riducously compressed its laughable .... it almost looks like the movie was 1/10th of the proper resolution and then scaled up to make one big huge blocky mess. Some shots you can't even make out whats in the frame and what the picture is, let alone any detail.
90MB cinepak compressed mov is also unbelievably blocky, unacceptably so. Also, if theres a moving camera or stuff moving in frame sometimes bits of it don't move as if the compression algorithms are trying to prevent portions of the frame moving. Settings are medium quality (obviously high quality and you'd be looking at something like a 500mb file !!!! thats 5 times bigger than the dvd vob i created !)
A full resolution mp4 file came out at 60mb and its still not as good looking as the divx and wmv encoded files.
An H.264 first of all removes all the contrast from the movie so it looks all milky... and then its 59mb. But here's the real clanger, thats at half resolution, a measly 360x200. Pathetic. What is H.264 ??? Technology from the dark ages ?
A half size mpeg 4 file with data rate limited to 500K comes out at the same filesize as the full resolution one !!!! i.e. 60mb .. and its still not a patch quality wise on the 25mb windows counterparts.
I will continue testing but please in the meantime, if there is some secret to thsi quicktime nonsense then do let me know.
    kind regards

How large in file size are your divx or WMP files?
Don't use Sorenson 3 included with QT Pro (they sell a "Pro" version that includes more options).
The Cinepak codec is nearly 15 years old. It's only included to maintain some backward compatibility.
If you use H.264 you can achieve great looking results. But since you're trying to compress an hour (of video and audio, 13GB in DV format and probably close to 1GB in your divx file) into a file size you can upload via FTP you're compressing too much.
Convert the file using H.264 at its current size to an .mp4 or .mov file and burn it to CD (if it will fit) or DVD and mail it to your client. I send DVD's in mail (costs about $.84 in postage) all the time.

  • Difference in quality on footage imported in FCP 3.0 vs. 5.0?

    Hi all.
I'm wondering if there is a difference in quality of image for footage captured in FCP 3.0 compared with footage captured in FCP 5.0?
I've got a project that contains footage captured from both these apps. I'm presently editing it on FCP 5.0. I'm just wondering if there is a difference that might come to haunt me later on down the road (i.e. moving project to dvd, blueray, hd dvd, digibeta, etc.)
    The footage is standard DV.
    Thanks a bunch.
    hr2

I admit, I'm a bit clueless on the codec issue, but
hasn't the Quicktime codec been vastly improved since
    FCP 3.0? What with H.264?
Yes, H.264 is a great delivery codec compared to some from the past, but if you're capturing DV via FireWire into your Mac, that's different and has nothing to do with H.264.
So in the old 3.0 days you could capture DV25, edit, then when you're done export to Cinepak or Sorenson 3 or somethin'.
Today you can capture DV25, edit, then when you're done export and compress to H.264.

  • Proxy bypass ... ??

I'm trying to debug a blocked website ... looked up my proxy settings in Sys Prefs/Network/Advanced.
Here's what I see in "Bypass proxy settings..."
    *.local, 169.254/16
    Should these be here?
    What is 169.264/16 --- it's not a proper IP address... ?

    *.local, 169.254/16
    Should these be here?
    Yes
    What is 169.264/16 --- it's not a proper IP address... ?
It is a proper address range.  169.264.*.* (aka 169.264/16) are self assigned IP addresses.  A system will use one of these addresses if the computer cannot find a DHCP server to assign it an address.  169.264.*.* are non-routing IP addresses, so they can only work on the local LAN.
The .local domain is for addressing systems on your local LAN.  If you look at System Preferences -> Sharing -> Computer name, the text under the computer name will have text along the lines of
Computers on your local network can access your computer at:
    yourComputerName.local
The "Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains:" basically programs that know how to use Proxies, that these addresses and domains should not be sent to the Proxy Server.  For example in the Corporate setting, addresses to computers inside the Company should not be sent to the proxy server, as that would send connects to the outside world, and the computers inside the company are not accessible from the outside world, so you want to make sure those addresses do not get sent to the proxy server.
in the case of 169.264.*.* and *.local addresses, these are on your local LAN, and again, if you are sending things to a proxy server, you do not want to send these addresses to the proxy server, as these addresses are non-routable and thus not accessing from beyond your home router, which is why they are set by default in the "Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains:" field.
First of all, do you have Proxies set?  Most normal people do NOT need a proxy.  Proxies are generally used by Macs behind a "Corporate" Firewall that does not allow unrestricted access to the internet, and require employees to surf the web via a Proxy server.  So if you do have Proxies set, that could be a problem all by itself.
If you DO NOT have any proxies set (no boxes checked in the "Select a protocol to configure" section, then the "Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains:" does not do anything.
By the way.  You posted this in the Mavericks forum, but your signature says you are running Yosemite.

  • Elements 9, DSLR H.264 - What codec is best to edit with & highest quality?

    Hello All,
I have quite a bit of DSLR footage I recently shot using a Canon 5d.  I have Adobe Premiere Elements 9 and it really chokes down the system.  I have a PC with i7 and 8 gigs of RAM.
What would be the best file format to convert the H.264 footage for editing while maintaining the highest quality possible.  The footage was shot at 24fps.  Please give a detailed description of how to convert it - there are a lot of adjustable settings in the advanced tab of the share section in PrE 9.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Brian

    Bill,
Is probably right , as he is most times when he is drinking Aussie wine.
I only have PE 4 and when you bring the H.264 mov in there you get a red line, you are better off rendering the working area as it will run smoother.
Ps.  You should not be having problems with the audio, I have just finished editing 35 mins jazz from a live performance, if there is a red line from the h.264mov files as Bill said , you should render the lot. Changing the audio should be easy, but save as you go
Ah, I do not know why there are two track of video in there, you should have one video+ 1 audio track together, unless you have added another video track ?
Ps. If the playback stops and the music continues you have a problem, It has happened to me.You are running a 32 bit piece of software in a 64 bit operating system, it may help if you download  Running Windows XP Mode with Windows Virtual PC as I used to lose files and windows in PP and PE, but, other experts here will tell you it is not necessary, it is worth a try ?
I would start a new project , Clean the Media Cache, bring the H.264mov clips in one by one and  have no gaps , do not disconnect the audio from the video.
Good luck ( you could try Adobe Technical Service, if all else fails ) ?

  • ATV will not play my h.264 files--what to do?

I have some video files that I shot with my new Sony HX5V they are saves as .MTS files (AVCHD) and I used ClipWrap to make them into Quicktime movies... now I can play them in the Finder via QuickView, etc... Yet, I cannot use these video files with ATV... they will not Sync and therefore cannot be played.
So, what's the best way (highest picture quality, smart workflow) to get these babies on my ATV?
    BTW: the converted movie says that it's: H.264, 1440 X 1080 (1888 X 1062), 24 Bit Integer (Little Endian), 29.97 FPS, data rate of 13.54 mbits.
It would be best if there was a way to play this stuff without having to convert and store it more than once.
    Thanks,
    Robert

I'm not familiar with clipwrap but know a little of what it does, it's most useful feature for me would be its ability to repair the directory structure on your AVCHD camera. Otherwise Clipwrap simply replaces the proprietary AVCHD format and places an AVC file in a mov container without changing the AVC profile.
What you need to do is to recompress the AVC file within the mov container to another profile that is compatible with the tv. I don't know if clipwrap will do this. Clipwrap will however convert the original AVCHD to AIC which would allow Quicktime to convert it to AVC compatible with the tv using it's tv preset.
If Clipwrap has the ability to recompress AVC during its transcoding process you should choose your video export to resize to 960 x 540 using the L 3.1 profile and a maximum bitrate of 4.5 Mbps, audio should be AAC at a maximum of 160 Kbps per channel at 44 KHz.
However you might find things a lot simpler if you were to use imovie to import from your camera, edit and export for the tv.
