What's the best GENERAL Linux forum?

Naturally, the best distro forum is right here, but where do people go for general Linux questions, discussion, kernel topics, etc? I drop into LinuxQuestions and LinuxForums every now and then - anyone have other recommendations?

Dusty wrote:I prefer making a fool of you too.[..]
I need no help on that front.  I used the restroom at the grocery store yesterday, came out and wandered aimlessly through the produce section for about 10 minutes, gave a few "hellos", dropped a kiwi in my basket, and finally noticed my yellow shirt poking through my pant zipper.  It was too late at that point to make ammends.  I just put on my shades, walked to the register, stood in line, gave a few stares back, checked out, and walked calm and cooly back to my car.  Hands intact and never leaving the basket once...
A fool? yes. But, a damn cool fool at that...
My recommendation Dusty, do like me...put your sunglasses on when you type in these forums.  It won't seem so bad after you hit "submit"...

  • To video editors: What's the best software video encoder?

I'm relatively new to the encoding world, outside of .m2v for DVD.  I have a Mac Pro Dual Quad-Core 2.4 Ghz Intel Xeon system with 14 GB of RAM and running OS X 10.7.2.  I have the latest version of Final Cut Studio, which includes Final Cut Pro 7 and Compressor.  I also have Adobe Media Encoder, but upon testing, I was (ironically) flabbergasted by the fact that Adobe's encoding software doesn't come with support for .avi output.  For that reason, it's difficult to trust it.  I love what Compressor has to offer, and its encoding quality is more than satisfactory for any and all Mac-based file types, but obviously, the format limitations outside of the Apple realm present a problem in terms of the variety I can offer a client.  I would like to have the flexibility of .flv, .wmv, .avi, etc.
Again, I love the QuickTime options of Compressor.  I have read that Flip4Mac has add-ons for the formats which I listed above, but I've never used that software for this kind of workflow.  I also have some experience with Sorenson Squeeze, but that was mainly on an Avid platform, and there were various frame size/crop issues with encoding which forced me as a user to jump through MANY hoops (none of those hoops are an issue in Compressor, but, again, file types are limited) in order to achieve my encoding goals.  However, Sorenson does offer support for every imaginable file type in its $599 Pro edition of the software.  I'd rather not spend that much just for an encoder if unnecessary, but I honestly have no real frame of reference in terms of cost-to-"output variety" ratio.
So, to the many who are much more educated and experienced than I am, I ask, in your opinion as professionals...what's the best software encoder?  Is it one of the three I have already mentioned, or is it another software with which I am not yet familiar?  I am open to any and all suggestions and opinions.  At this point, I am mostly dealing with web delivery, whether it be streaming or downloadable file types, and DVD/Blu-Ray encoding for disc burn.  However, as I'm sure you understand, you never know what kind of project will come your way, or what kind of file type and/or size a client will require on any given day.  I'm really just trying to get an education on encoding in general so I can stay somewhat ahead of the curve, and be able to deliver as many different file types as possible so I never have to tell a client, "No, I can't do that."
    Thoughts?

Sorry that you are not getting help.
I would have said that there are some excellent people I see that hang out in the forums for Final Cut etc that would.
I look more at hardware aspect and had you asked I would have recommend against the 2.4GHz in favor of 6-core 3.33 or 2.93 or something. Giving up GHz for more cores or something never works out.
Then I would have stayed with 10.6.8 (maybe keep Lion handy for testing only).
    Setup a good storage subsystem, 6 x 4GB (or 3 x 8GB when using single cpu).

  • What is the best way to set up my new Mac Pro?

Not wanting to screw up in a process I've not done with a brand new machine before, I'm looking for feedback on my plan for setting my new Mac Pro next week...
    The physical plan is this:
For RAM, I have four 2GB SDRAM's plus the supplied six 1GB modules. My plan here is to install the 2GB rams into the first four slots and install four of the 1GB modules into the remaining four slots for a total of 12GB's.
When the cost for 4GB modules gets down to reasonable, I'll buy four of them and bump the current rams down the line which will then give me a total of 24 gigs where I'll stay.
For my hard drives, I'm installing a 160GB Intel X25-M into the first drive bay
    http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/mainstream/index.htm
using one of MaxUpgrades' 'MaxConnects' kits. I will use this drive for the operating system software and my applications and their libraries.
Next, into the remaining three drive bays, I am installing three 300GB WD Velociraptors. Mine are the pre-'backplane ready' versions:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=459
so I have bought these sleds for them...
    http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_i d=180
I own one of Sonnet's Tempo SATA E4P cards
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae4p.html
which, thanks to this forum, I now understand, with the correct firmware installed, function well so I will install it and be able to establish hardware RAID. I will create a RAID 0 set with the three Velociraptors and use it to store all of my data files.
Backup will happen on a 1TB WD 'Caviar Black' external drive connected through one of the Sonnet card's external eSATA ports and using the OS 'Time Machine' software.
And that's the physical plan. My question is about setting things up. The physical installation part is straight forward and I don't expect any difficulties but I'm wondering what is the best way to install the operating system.
Do I take a first step keeping the supplied hard drive installed, install the solid state drive into the next drive bay and then transfer the contents from the supplied drive onto the SSD or do I do the complete physical installation process and do a 'C' drive start up and install the OS that way?
And, do you have any tips/suggestions on setting up the RAID 0 set?
thanks for the help. I want to do this right.
    JQ

oh mighty Hatter, I knew you'd have helpful guidance to offer! And thank you. You've confirmed my anxieties about the Sonnet card; kind of a 'too much, too quickly' sort of thing. And it's not that Sonnet's not a good company. Just everything to do with new technologies and the growth curve we all, manufacturers and users, go through when they come out. And, for sure, the new Mac Pro's are new technology; the single biggest forward leap in Apple's top-of-the-line machines for some time far as I can tell. Just reading at Intel's website about the Nehalem's is a joy!
So, I will proceed now with everything except for the controller card, leaving that 'til later. In the meantime, I think I'll just happily run with the four hard drives all running independently. No software RAID. I know just those, the SSD boot drive plus Velociraptor trio's going inside of a 2.66ghz 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro is going to be a working pleasure. Heck, this way, I'll get settled in and used to the machine's speed, have a great time doing so and then, in however many months, I can jump into spending another chunk of money on an excellent RAID card, RAID card's dear Barefeats will have tested and reviewed for us, set up my RAID 0 set and head of to those new races watching my computer leap for joy! Could be that, by then, the cost of Intel 160GB X25-M's will have dropped enough that I can afford to go for a second and have a two SSD RAID 0 boot drive... Yummy!
Thanks for the help. Like I say, I knew there was useful guidance hanging on some limb within your personal kit, (otherwise referred to as your mind)!
Interesting to read about the problems people have had with Sonnet's 2.17 update in PPC's... In this computer, my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7ghz, I have a Sonnet 'Tempo Sata X4P' controller card. I downloaded and installed 2.17 and got the same troubles; no cut, no paste, no 'drag and drop' etc. It was miserable.
Mine, fortunately, magically corrected after running the 'permissions verify and correct' process in Disc Utility and, after a restart, all was back to almost normal but for one exception; the Sonnet card was no longer present or functioning including the four eSATA ports out the back. (I ran Tech Tools Pro 5's repair suites first but, and who knows why, it didn't correct the problem...) This one was absolutely in the 'who knows what the f_'s going on and why it disappeared but did' class.
Oh, the other remnant is that, when the computer goes into sleep, after about five minutes, the fans rev up, and up, and the computer's frozen; only access is to do a forced shutdown pressing and holding the power button, so I've had to adopt a 'shut down whenever leaving it for more than fifteen minutes' approach to this dear friend. Once I've fully moved into and established my new one (which should arrive today, by the way... Yippeee!!! Can't wait!), I'll do a complete restoration on this one including taking out the Sonnet card. Usually, I sell my old Pro's but, this time, I'm going to keep this one as a back up and just general second computer for times I might need it. It has been such a great and dependable machine. Keeping it seems the right thing to do.
thanks Hatter. I'll let you know how things go, including what happens with the SSD. I don't have speed test software so I won't be able to track it's performance like that guy in the post you gave me did...

  • What is the best structure to use for my goal?

I am new to JavaFX but not new to Java. In fact I have my computer science degree training on java. It has been a number of years since I have worked hands on with Java as I have had a more website oriented role at my company since graduating, but we now need to rollout some new software and we have chosen JavaFX to accomplish this. I am currently reading "Pro JavaFX 2 A definitive guide to rich clients with java technology" by Apress in order to learn the small nuances of the javafx platform.
My question comes in regards to building the skeleton/structure of my program. Even after being half way through the book and moved on from the section that I believe would address this, I'm not sure the best route to go to accomplish my goals. Below are some wireframe pictures that will give you an idea of how the core structure of the program will work.
    [Main Image|www.computech.com/images/temp/1.png]
This image shows the look and feel that will be seen the majority of the time. At the top left you have the car selection, top is the streaming weather information graph, on the left is the abbreviated Add Run where a user can input new data and the main area is where the user can see all of the data and information they have entered.
    [Side Are Expanded|www.computech.com/images/temp/2.png]
Here is where my true question comes into play. When the user clicks the arrow button to expand the Add Run area I would like it to animate it to expose the rest of the information shown here and hide the logbook area. I feel that a modified accordian pane could accomplish this but because it is a horizontal / vertical hybrid I'm not sure if this is the best method.
    [Streaming Weather Collapsed|www.computech.com/images/temp/3.png]
This is why I feel a typical accordian pane just won't cut it. Because the user also has the ability to collapse the streaming weather area to expose more information. So in a way it's almost like to accordian panes, one vertical and one horizontal yet sitting on top of each other. This is where I get pretty lost on the correct path to take.
    [Logbook Only Expanded|www.computech.com/images/temp/4.png]
Here shows the logbook only expanded as much as possible.
To make it a little easier to see the different states I have also included a single image that shows all 4 states. [All 4 States|computech.com/images/temp/5.png]
As a newbie to JavaFX and rusty with Java in general, what is the best way to build my skeleton so that it can accomplish all 4 of my states, animate the opening and closing of each of the areas and allow me to easily change the content (the menu options at the top will primarily change the Options area which is on the left hand side).
Thanks for your help in advance.

Such beautiful and professional mockups. Which quite contradicts this:
As a newbie to JavaFX and rusty with Java in general, what is the best way to build my skeleton so that it can accomplish all 4 of my statesYou say that as if you want to believe there is some "novice" way of going about implementing such a professional looking piece of software. But you know just as well as I do that when your knowledge and skill level is low, you're only going to be able to achieve a dinky looking approximation of what you want to achieve and you're likely going to exceed whatever budget you have.
You have to keep working on your skill level first. You have such a wonderful mockup - I would do the same with your application. Create a mockup skeleton and keep tinkering with it until it looks like something you want to achieve. Don't create a full blown version, start with a simple test version. One step at a time, the thing to focus on is to not lose your grip on it. Make sure you make it work and you understand how and why it works. When you know the how and why, you're ready to do the thing for real. You're not going to learn that in a forum I'm afraid, it is going to be a couple of weeks of effort likely because you really do have to scratch that rust off of your Java knowledge first.

  • What is the Best way to move large mailboxes between datacenters?

What is the Best way to move large mailboxes between datacenters?

    Hi,
Are you asking with regards to on-premises Exchange? With Microsoft Online SaaS services (aka Exchange Online) there is no control and no need to control which data center a mailbox resides in.
With regard to on-premises Exchange, you have two choices: you can move it over the WAN in which case you would either do a native mailbox move (assuming you have Exchange 2010 or later you can suspend the move after the copy so you can control the
time of the cutover) or create a database copy in the second data center and once the database copies have synchronized change the active copy.
The other choice is to move is out of band which would usually involve an offline seed of the database (you could conceivably move via PST file but that would disrupt access to the mailbox and is not really the 'best way').
In general, Exchange on-premises questions are best asked on the Exchange forum: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/home?category=exchangeserver

  • What are the best approaches for mapping re-start in OWB?

What are the best approaches for mapping re-start in OWB?
We are using OWB repository 10.2.0.1.0 and OWB client 10.2.0.1.31. The Oracle version is 10 G (10.2.0.3.0). OWB is installed on Linux.
We have number of mappings. We built process flows for mappings as well.
I like to know, what are the best approches to incorportate re-start options in our process. ie a failure of mapping in process flow.
How do we re-cycle failed rows?
Are there any builtin features/best approaches in OWB to implement the above?
Does runtime audit tables help us to build re-start process?
If not, do we need to maintain our own tables (custom) to maintain such data?
How did our forum members handled above situations?
    Any idea ?
    Thanks in advance.
    RI

    Hi RI,
How many mappings (range) do you have in a process flows?Several hundreds (100-300 mappings).
If we have three mappings (eg m1, m2, m3) in process flow. What will happen if m2 fails?Suppose mappings connected sequentially (m1 -> m2 -> m3). When m2 fails then processflow is suspended (transition to m3 will not be performed). You should obviate cause of error (modify mapping and redeploy, correct data, etc) and then repeat m2 mapping execution from Workflow monitor - open diagram with processflow, select mapping m2 and click button Expedite, choose option Repeat.
In re-start, will it run m1 again and m2 son on, or will it re-start at row1 of m2?You can specify restart point. "at row1 of m2" - I don't understand what you mean (all mappings run in Set based mode, so in case of error all table updates will rollback,
but there are several exception - for example multiple target tables in mapping without corelated commit, or error in post-mapping - you must carefully analyze results of error).
What will happen if m3 fails?Process is suspended and you can restart execution from m3.
By having without failover and with max.number of errors=0, you achieve re-cycle failed rows to zero (0).This settings guarantee existence only two return result of mapping - SUCCSES or ERROR.
What is the impact, if we have large volume of data?In my opinion for large volume Set based mode is the prefered processing mode of data processing.
With this mode you have full range enterprise features of Oracle database - parallel query, parallel DML, nologging, etc.

  • What is the best way to allow one to send an email? Confused.

    Hi,
I researched on the forum for the ability to have someone click a button and be able to have a blank email pop up.  I use to use this all the time.
However my question is since Outlook Express (and for that matter now Windows mail) are no longer included in the new operatings systems ... meaning everyone has to buy a mail program ... what is the best way to have someone send an email?  I am particularly not fond of forms and would rather have them be able to have an email pop up.
However now you will miss a lot of people ... I use Windows mail thus the Outlook express code gives me an error.
    THUS MY QUESTION:
Is there general code (and if so what is it?) that allows a person to click a button and send an email no matter what type email program they have?
If not is there an other way to accomplish this?
If not, if I must use a form/action script 2.0 ... does anyone have a sure-fire 2.0 script that is easy to use/debug/modify?
    THANKS.

I don't understand what you mean by "be able to have blank email pop up" but Yes you can send an email without the need of any email programs through ActionScript via PHP through the POST method. There is a simple example in http://www.kirupa.com/developer/actionscript/flash_php_email.htm

  • What's the best way to do it?

    hi!
i'm new to swing and i have a few general questions to ask. i have to display a picture and i need to have buttons and text areas, maybe sliders too on the same thing. what's the best way to do it? do i make a panel with the buttons, another panel with the picture, another one with sliders and a fourth one with text areas and i put everything on a frame? or there are other containers that work better with these particular things? and then about the positioning, i always have trouble putting my panels in the right positions, which layout should i use? are all layouts evenly effective?
and should i be posting in the new java forum (as i'm not advanced) or in the swing forum?
    thanks :)

Take a look at the layouts, that will help you a lot. You'll probably need multiple layouts to get what you want to look the way you want it--don't think you just have to use one layout and try to force it to arrange things the way you want them arranged. Generally you will have a JFrame as you base, JPanel to display the Image, and what ever else you need you can either add to the JFrame or another JPanel.
In the JPanel that you want to display the image--Override paintComponent:
    pubic void paintComponent(Graphics g){
      super.paintComponent(g);
      g.drawImage(myImage, 0, 0, getParent());
}This will paint your image directly onto the graphics context of the Object you want to use to display it.
After you load you image, you should call repaint() to on your object you overrode the paintComponent for, this will properly invoke your paintComponent method and get your image painted onto your component you are using to display.

  • Applying common styles to multiple HNCS: What is the best practice?

    Hi Community
Adhering to best practices, we have built a SharePoint 2013 intranet with multiple Host Named Site Collections all accessible via HTTPs, for example
    https://home.domain.com   -  Landing Page
    https://this.doamin.com
    https://that.domain.com
    https://other.domain.com
We have noticed issues with the home page on each site having an affect on the Meta Data Navigation Menu so thought it was time we reviewed our references.
Ok, we want to have a common master page and CSS, JavaScript, Fonts etc throughout the intranet.  So what is the best way of implementing this
and what is a candidate provision strategy say from Dev
My thoughts are copy a common custom master page to each Master Page Gallery but with options as to how we reference external files
Option 1:  replicate on each of the HNSCs:
Local copies of CSS, JS  etc  in  •   /siteAssets/  and or,  •   /Style Library/syles.css Or
Option 2:  explicit reference to the styles held on the home site   collection
The master page might have common reference to
    https://home.domain.com/SiteAssets/css/styles.css
    Or
Option 3: use the _layouts file structure  - not my favourite as not accessible in SPD 2013 or using sp2013 built in document management
Use the hive and not the content database structure.  Hence, all master pages would have references similar to: •   _layouts/15/styles/mystyles.css •   _layouts/15/images/client/home.jpg
Would be interested to hear you thoughts as clearly there is more that one way to achieve styles nirvana!
    Daniel
    Freelance consultant

    Hi Daniel,
If you need to use the master page for multiple site collections, then you’d better to choose the option 2 or options 3, as you do not need to make copies of the CSS or JS files and re-upload them to each site collection.
And per my knowledge, option 3 is better. Because the CSS or JS files are stored at the local system of SharePoint server in option 3, it is faster than referring a file which is stored in database in option 2.
Generally, it depends based on your situation as you don’t like option 3 when the CSS or JS files are not accessible in SPD.
    Thanks,

  • What's the best way to replicate the contents of servers?

Here's the situation. Got a client who wants to take his 5 existing servers - one a general file/app server, one an email (probably Exchange) server, one running MS SQL, and I'm not sure about the roles of servers 4 and 5. Needless to say, he wants to take
the existing servers and relocate them to his home. He also wants to replace the servers with new versions.  The old servers are running an older version of Windows Server (assuming 2003 but could be newer) - but he IS willing to spend money upgrading
    the OS if need be.
He wants to take the 5 servers and replicate the contents from the old servers to the new ones. Then periodically update the old group with the updated data on the new group - so in case of disaster, he can quickly either move the old servers back to his
office OR at least recover the data quickly by way of a sync session.
What is the best way to go about this? Will he need to upgrade the OS on the old servers to make it happen? Money isn't much of an obstacle.

Here's some info on migrating the file server.

For exchange migration I'd ask them here.

The sql should be faily simple backup / restore but better to ask them over here.

More generally, if you write like a semi-literate boob you will very likely be ignored. So don't use instant-messaging shortcuts. Spelling "you" as "u" makes you look like a semi-literate boob to save two entire keystrokes. Worse: writing like a l33t script kiddie hax0r is the absolute kiss of death and guarantees you will receive nothing but stony silence (or, at best, a heaping helping of scorn and sarcasm) in return.
If you are asking questions in a forum that does not use your native language, you will get a limited amount of slack for spelling and grammar errors but no extra slack at all for laziness (and yes, we can usually spot that difference). Also, unless you know what your respondent's languages are, write in English. Busy hackers tend to simply flush questions in languages they don't understand, and English is the working language of the Internet. By writing in English you minimize your chances that your question will be discarded unread.
the main issue here is my questionMy recommendation: learn to do Swing without a code-generator. You gain a much better understanding of the underpinnings of Swing, the layout managers, and you gain extremely good control of component placement.

  • FAQ: What are the best export settings?

For a video version of this frequently asked question and answer, see this video:
What's the best export format or codec?
Compression  is essential for reducing the size of movies so that they can be  stored, transmitted, and played back effectively. Compression is  achieved by an encoder; decompression is achieved by a decoder. Encoders  and decoders are known by the common term codec.
No  single codec or set of settings is best for all situations. For  example, the best codec for compressing cartoon animation is generally  not efficient for compressing live-action video. Similarly, the best  codec for playback over a slow network connection is generally not the  best codec for an intermediate stage in a production workflow.
When  you create a movie for distribution, it is often highly  compressed;  when you create a movie for an intermediate stage in a  post-production  workflow, it is usually losslessly compressed (or even  uncompressed).
To determine what the best settings are for your purposes, read these resources:
article from Aharon Rabinowitz about how to plan based on client specifications
    article on compression
article on planning your work with final delivery specifications in mind.
In many cases, you can and should use encoding presets in Adobe Media Encoder, which are created for the specific purpose of setting up exports for common formats and uses. For information about several common encoding presets, see this:
