What's the best way to preserve battery life?

Question

I know obviously make sure your backlight isn't always on and keep Wifi off, I've read www.apple.com/batteries throughout.
I'm talking about preserving the battery itself.
Like is it better to let the battery run all the way down before you recharge it or charge it as soon as it gets around 40-50% or every couple of days?
I have my blackberry which I charged every night regardless for months and months and now about a year later, the battery is basically crap and I'm lucky if I don't have to charge it every night now.
Same concept apply?

Yup, the backlight is the biggest battery drain.

Rechargeable batteries don't last forever. I supervise a cell phone repair department. We generally tell customers that, with average use, a battery will last about a year. Heavy users, it can be six months. Many Blackberrys have big screens, too. Over time, no matter what you do, a rechargeable battery will lose capacity and eventually, not hold a charge. At least your Blackberry has a user replaceable battery and you can pick one up for less than $40 dollars!
