What's the one thing you hate about Gnu/Linux?

Hello everyone, this is my first post.
What's the one thing you hate about Gnu/Linux or any other FOSS OS?
I would say Xorg. Mainly because it asynchronous and that cause windows tears.
Try resizing a window. See how it kind of jumps. It bugs me
I only wish something would replace Xorg soon.

Backwards-compatibility is cheerfully broken, about a hundred times too often.
,..not to mention regression.
Linux is free, because people wouldn't want to pay a company in return for such treatment.
Agreed.
People (and especially companies) actually prefer to pay for operating systems; it transfers responsibility and reprehensibility onto an external entity when something goes wrong.

  • [Solved] The one thing I hate about Vim

    Hi,
I've started using Vim some time ago and I now understand why everyone loves it.
There's one thing, though, that is driving me nuts; a little but very irritating behaviour.
I hope to be understandable enough so that someone can help me.
Basically when editing (deleting or inserting characters)  a long line containing many words separated by spaces, Vim automatically moves  part of the line to a new line, creating a new paragraph.
Do you see what I mean? I just don't want Vim to create new paragraphs when editing a line.
I'm sure other Vim users already experienced this behaviour... how can I fix it?
Here's my .vimrc, it may be involved somehow:
" All system-wide defaults are set in $VIMRUNTIME/archlinux.vim (usually just
" /usr/share/vim/vimfiles/archlinux.vim) and sourced by the call to :runtime
" you can find below. If you wish to change any of those settings, you should
" do it in this file (/etc/vimrc), since archlinux.vim will be overwritten
" everytime an upgrade of the vim packages is performed. It is recommended to
" make changes after sourcing archlinux.vim since it alters the value of the
    " 'compatible' option.
" This line should not be removed as it ensures that various options are
" properly set to work with the Vim-related packages available in Debian.
    runtime! archlinux.vim
" If you prefer the old-style vim functionalty, add 'runtime! vimrc_example.vim'
" Or better yet, read /usr/share/vim/vim72/vimrc_example.vim or the vim manual
" and configure vim to your own liking!
    " no vi compatibility

See ":help textwidth" and ":help ins-textwidth" for more.
BTW: "nowrap" does only influence how the text will be displayed. it doesn't change the text in the buffer.
Thanks bernarcher, 'textwidth' was the option I was looking for!
Wrapping is another thing and I like to keep it enabled.
@quigybo: I will look through 'formatoptions', thanks. I already use augroup for mutt and is very handy indeed!

  • What's the first thing you do with a new computer?

I'm getting a new MBP in a couple of weeks. I've been in the Mac family since my first Performa years and years ago. In the past, I've just opened up the box and started. This time I want to take a different approach and I'm wondering what sort of things you do to/with your computers when they are new and before you start loading them up with "all your stuff." Example: I've thought of using "Color Label" to code everything that originally comes with the computer in one color. Maybe what you do isn't "serious" but it's just about personalizing your Mac.
This will be the first computer I won't have to share with anyone else in the family! It will be mine, all mine. Mine, mine, mine!
    Chip

First off, connect to AC and charge the battery fully. Within the first couple of days, calibrate the battery using these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
Otherwise, you really can just open the box and start.
Personally, though, I usually reinstall the OS from the Install DVDs that come with the MBP. I do an Erase & Install and I customize the installation to save space (for example, I don't use GarageBand so I omit that, along with limiting the language(s) and selecting only the printer driver families I'll need. Doing that saved me ~4 GB with Leopard (even large HDDs fill up eventually...).

  • The ONE feature you need (want)

    Hey,
Obviously you should send your feedback to Apple's official feedback site at:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
But, we don't get to see your "vote" there. So what is the ONE feature you would ask for if you had the Hotline number on Steve Jobs' desk?
No fair listing 2 or 10. If you have to boil it down to ONE feature:
    I would vote: ToDo List

Being able to get louder volume
would also be helpful, but I think that's a hardware
    issue.
I am still not convinced. I think that if the iPod volume can be loud, why can't the volume in the phone app? Sorry; that's kind of off topic, just had to throw that out again

Not going to happen the way you want it to.
When you add a gift card balance to the Apple ID, it's available for the Apple ID.
Probably best to create unique Apple ID's for each... this will also make things easier in the future as purchases are eternally tied to the Apple ID they were purchased with.

    Hi,
    >Rant over the one thing I dont like about SAP
If you have only one single thing  you don't like about SAP products then you are very lucky.
There are plenty of things that I hate in SAP products, specially with the weird "ergonomy" of a lot of transactions or bugs I know since R/3 release 2.2 and still there in ECC 6.0...
Number one on my "hate list"is presently J2EE logs analysis...
Fortunately, there are also a lot of things that I love in SAP products.
Otherwise, I would not be still working in this area since 11 years.
I am always amazed that the architecture of the abap stack is so old (1992 !) and still up to date and so reliable (especially compared to Java...)

  • The one thing that bugs me about the iMac design is.....

The one thing that bugs me about the imac is..... the sleep mode led.
Was it beyond the ken of the designers to make it apple shaped?
Now - call me recklessy stupid, but.....
Having seen how easily the front cover can be detatched, how much of a dolt would i be to try and fit a foil blank apple, or apple shaped hole blank inside the casing to rectify this inconsequential but nagging annoyance?
You see, recently making the leap from pc land, I am left with hours of empty time on my hands.
Time that would usually be profitably taken up by debugging, reinstalling, restarting, recovering, rebooting and waiting for all of the above, and generally working around the 'beige box of nightmares'.
Or should I just stop proctastinating and finish off the latest chapter of my upcoming video project, to be previewed 4 weeks tonight?

Whip out your hacksaw and have at it, realizing you are voiding any warranty that you had.
    Good luck.

Is your assignment about managing a classroom full of Macs?
Otherwise, Screen Sharing, or a VNC client/server, or TeameViewer.com, or LogMeIn.com might be better, and less expensive.
ARD is intended for managing a classroom or office full of Macs. It is overkill for remotely accessing a remote Mac or two.
