What should I know/learn before installing Arch?

Hi everyone!
This is my first post (I think).
I've been using Linux (Ubuntu) for.. A long time, first time I installed it, I used it for 4-5 months, then reinstalled Windows. Then 7 months ago (maybe even more), I got very tired of Windows and all of their bullshit. So I installed Ubuntu and I've been running it ever since. I'd like to try Arch Linux, because I've heard that you learn a lot and that it's very customizable and so on. Also it's pretty badass that you install everything yourself and so forth.
BUT! I've talked with a guy who tried to install it and he said it was hell. He said I'd at least need another PC, so I could google stuff as I come along. Which I have. I've partitionized my harddisk, so I can go back to Ubuntu if I fuck up. I feel ready to do this. I'm going to follow this tut: http://lifehacker.com/5680453/build-a-k … he-process
Do you guys recommend something that I should read about or learn before I venture into the Arch Linux world? I know my way around bash, even knows how to script in it using loops and all that. I'm also a Java-programmer, so I'm not a complete computer-retard.
So is there something that I should learn before? Thanks in advance! ^^

In addition to the excellent advice by flipper and Trillby:
You must be prepared to first try to fix things yourself. When people say you learn a lot by using Arch, this is in fact the way that you learn. You encounter a problem and then you set out to try to figure out how to solve it. This involves learning to effectively search the available documentation: http://wiki.archlinux.org, man pages, info manuals, searching the forum (hint: use "site:bbs.archlinux.org" in your search engine rather than the forum search mechanism), searching the web, and so on. Eventually, you will learn the underlying logic of the system and you'll be able to start to pinpoint and fix the source of problems on your own.
Remember to stay on top of the news. You can subscribe to the RSS feed on the Arch Linux front page. If you ever run into any problems with a system update, check the news before going any further.
Don't install software from the AUR until you absolutely have to and, when you do, keep the number of AUR-installed packages to a minimum. Remember that they are unsupported! And when you do install from the AUR, do not use any wrappers or helper scripts (i.e. yaourt or pacaur) until you have done it the manual way enough times to really know what's going on.
When you do need to seek help on the forums, remember to give sufficient background information. Tell us what you've already tried and what didn't work. Use "code" tags. Remember that the forums can be very helpful but your hand will not be held. Once again, that's where the learning comes from: personal experience, not step-by-step how-tos.
When something cannot be fixed, blame Allan.
File bug reports.
Update the wiki with your knowledge.
Don't ask on the forums which package you should try, A or B, try both of them as well as C and D! Learn from trying, tinkering and breaking.
Don't reinstall Arch, ever. It should be fixable no matter what. Some cases might be more complicated than others but the tools exist to fix it.
Don't use pacman's "--force" option unless explicitly advised to do so.
Have fun

Thank you for responding.  Nothing actually worked!  After reading the posts online, I called Apple.  They indicated they have seen problems with some software after their upgrades.  The technician was able to fix the problem on my computer remotely, but I have no clue what he did!  But, it was definitely related to their recent upgrade to my computer.

  • Getting a PowerBook: What should I know?

I'm almost positive that I'll be getting a PowerBook (15") within the next month or two. What should I know? I'll be moving from an iMac FP, so I'm used to a desk keyboard and MX1000. I'll get over the change. Are there any amazing laptop-centric utilities (I had a vision of tapping the corners of the trackpad to act as right, center, Exposé, etc. mouse buttons… cell phone interaction... battery monitoring)?
I'm a student. I'm used to carrying around a backpack with notebooks, textbooks, etc.. What would be the best way to carry the PowerBook? Does the battery last long enough for a day of school or should I bring the power adapter?
I'm just looking for any wisdom of experience from the Discussions community. Since you all secretly want points, the most helpful response gets the "answered" star, and the next most helpful get "helpful" stars.

Just wanted to throw in a plug for my case because a) it's very useful/convenient and b) I get tons of compliments. It's a black Timbuk2 quilted laptop sleeve, but on Timbuk2's website (Timbuk2.com) they sell a variety of models, colors and sizes. I like this particular model primarily because, as I am also a student, I am able to put my 15" PB in the case and then just put it in my backpack with all my other books without worrying about scratches, etc. It's not something extra you have to lug around in addition to your backpack. Happy shopping (and hey, if you buy online you can avoid the crowds!).

I don't know the details in the dump file. That's rather strange, what are you suppose to do then ?
What should I check in advance before start to impdp the dump file?First, try to generate a sqlfile within the impdp option sqlfile=, it won't import anything but will generate all the ddl the import will try to fire.

    Recovery Partition Creator 3.8
Recovery Partition – Recreate Without Reinstalling
Recovery Partition – Recreate Without Reinstalling (Requires Installer)
When you go to Internet Recovery use Disk Utility to repair the drive and repair permissions. Then erase the partition, formatting it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click the option button and select GUID. Then try to install the OS.

  • Bootcamp Question? Should I update bootcamp before installing Vista SP1

    Hi,
I am about to install Vista SP1 on iMac, Leopard 10.5.4.
About a month back, there was a bootcamp update that had been posted on support download website. The question is; Do I need to install the Update before installing Vista or is that needs to be done after the installation of Vista?
    Thanks for the help,

The update is consists only of new device drivers for Windows XP and Vista. There are different updates depending upon whether you install 32-bit XP, 32-bit Vista, or 64-bit Vista. So Windows must be installed first, the original drivers included on the Leopard DVD should be installed, then you can install the update in Windows.

  • Should I deinstall PS8 before installing PhotoShop SC5 Extended?

I just received PhotoShop CS5 Extended from Adobe, but before I install it on my iMac I have decided to ask the following questions, just in case:
    a. Is there any problem you can think of by having PS8 and also PhotoShop CS5 installed on the same computer, or should I just remove PS8 first?
    b. Is anybody else still having PhotoShop Installer problems as I have been reading in this forum lately?
My plan is to repair my iMac's permissions, restart the computer, install PhotoShop, and then repair permissions one more time before using PhotoShop.
My 21" iMac is as follows:
    Mac OS 10.6.3
3.33 MHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8GB 1067 MHz RAM

    UPDATE:
I went ahead and installed PhotoShop CS5, and it seems to be working fine. Before installing. I repaired permissions using UnyX, and then restarted my iMac. Next I installed CS5, and checked the computer's permissions (these were OK). I left PS8 alone, and both are working without problems.
I did notice that noise reduction isn't any better than PS8, so I updated Neat Image V.4 to version 6 to use within the Filters folder of CS5.
Thank you for answering my questions.

  • Should I uninstall v8 before installing v13?

Should I uninstall Elements v8 before installing Elements v13?

No, they are both stand alone  applications and will work happily side bey side.

  • Should I uninstall CS3 before installing CS6? [was:Ton Limburg]

Do I have to uninstall all CS3 applications and extras, before installing CS6?

Of course I'll keep all my in CS3 made files for further use, and I'll upgrade them if needed.
I asked for retaining or removing applications... before installing newer versions, no upgrades.
But don't mention anymore, I deleted them.

  • What should I back up before 9.2.2 to Tiger 10.4.6 upgrade?

My wife's 10-1999 Blueberry iMac DV is slated for an upgrade to Tiger 10.4.6. It's at the Mac OS 9.2.2 level. Her email client is Netscape Messenger 4.7 (no kidding!) and her preferred browser is IE 5.X (the latest Mac version). Since I'm not a Mac expert, I'm hesitant to start the upgrade until I know what I should back up. Can someone give me a brief list of the the major items to back up?
    Thanks,

    iMac G3   Mac OS 9.2.x

Hi tcpasley and welcome to Apple Discussions!
You may get more help posting this in the Tiger Installation and Setup Forum People there will be able to offer some good upgrade strategies.
(Classic is OS9 under emulation within OSX, not OS9 itself.)
Before you upgrade you should look at the hardware requirements for Tiger. You need much RAM and much disk space.
Can't comment on backing up emails, but I fear that direct conversion from Messenger to Mail 2 is not an option.

  • What should I know about the recent virus on apple products?

    To Whom can best help,
I recently learned about the recent virus that infected more than 500000 computers.  I heard many talk about the software apple uses as the safest software available.  However, now that I own a few products from apple, this recent virus that got ahold of some personal information has me wondering what is the best route to protect cell phones, ipods, ipads,  and macbooks?  is there an AV recomended?  It would be great to get some adivce from apple techies. I tried looking up some information on the recent problem that had happened, I was hoping it would be addressed on the primary page of apple but found it wasn't.  I am just a little paranoid about people accessing my info and try my best to stay ahead of the virus/trojans and stuff.  for these electronics are there any really really amazing security apps people would recommend?
    sincerely, a concerned customer

First, it's not a virus but a trojan. We mostly recommend ClamXav 2.2.4 as anti-virus software for OS X.
Two Helpful Links Regarding Flashback Trojan
A link to a great User Tip about the trojan: Flashback Trojan User Tip
A related link in the tip to a checker: Malware Checker Dowload Link
A Google search can reveal a variety of alternatives on how the remove the trojan should your computer get infected. This can get you started.
The trojan attachs through Java. If you don't have Java installed then you won't be affected. Java is not installed with Lion.
