What SSD (60GB) for T410/410i?

Hi all! Next week will arrive Thinkpad t410 that I recently bought. I'm going to improved the RAM and change SSD. At the moment I think i will change only the SSD, because I'm Installing an UBUNTU distro, so 3 GB of RAM are enought.
My idea is change the primary HDD with a SSD max 60GB, and put the HDD in place of the CD reader, install the system in SSD and all data in the HDD.
Therefore I ask you what is the best SSD 60 GB for T410? my budget is no more than 60 euros.
Thank you! Alessandro

You might be happier with partitioning the larger hard drive to make a data partition.  Small size partition for operating system, the remainder for data.
I tried a Lenovo bay with hard drive but I was not satisfied for two reasons:  1) the sound of the spinning drive; 2) the heat.  A drive bay has no vents for heat and the the keyboard above the bay gets warm.
What is a good SSD?  I already recommended it above.  I like Samsung and amazon.it has good prices for Europe and the shipping is fast.  They come out of their warehouse in Piacenza.

yes it will be faster, but you need to look for 1.8 inch SSD, they are pretty rare now and not cheap.
Look for something like Intel X-18m.
Also you could remove the optical drive and put in a 2.5 inch SSD into that caddy if you want. This maybe a cheaper, and you won't get any speed penalty, as the main hdd and the optical drive bay uses SATAII connection.

  • Upgrade ssd 2nd for T410s

I'm considering buying an SSD Ultrabay to add to your T410s now your hard drive is250GB 5400RPM 1.8-inch HDD, I have a number of issues following questions:
    - Does T410s support SSD SATA3 ?
    - SSD is attached to Ultrabay speed = how many percent against mounted directly to machine
    - If mounted on the SSD to buy a 1.8 inch, and the old drive can be purchased attached to 2.5 inch adapter to Ultrabay?
    Thanks

it won't run the SSD at SATA 6 gb/s speed, it would only run at SATA 3 gb/s.
The ultrabay on the T410s runs at the same speed as the main hdd bay, which is at the 3 gb/s.
Yes you can get a 1.8 to 2.5 inch converter.

because 4GB RAM don't go that far with your system and with photos.
Between the OS, other apps, your photo editing program, file sizes of photos, and the system needs free memory and cache.
SSD helps when you are low on memory and to load apps.
your photos should not be on the boot drive.

  • Raid Card, what to look for in a card?

    Hi guys,
Im looking for help on what to look for in a Raid card. Im new to Raid, but i have read the tweakers pages and it seems like the way forward.
Im a full time editor working with AVC-Intra footage doing fast cuts. Im about to ditch my 2008 mac pro and build a up to date PC around the i7 4930k. Im planning on running 8x3-4tb drives for footage; raid 5, 3x3tb raid 3 for exports, maybe 2x256 ssd raid 0 for boot, 2x3tb drive for page file and media cache, and maybe 3x3tb for stock footage raid 0.
Im totally lost in what to look for in a Raid card?
    Cheers Ryan

For 13 drives is there a cheaper option?
Yes, Areca 1882ix-16, 1264IL-16, Intel RS2WG160, LSI 9260-16i - or for that matter, any RAID controller with 13+ internal connections. There are much cheaper controllers from Highpoint and others, as well.
If your next question is, is it worth it going cheaper? ...Usually not for me personally - at least certainly not with Highpoint or other entry level controllers with subpar support and all kinds of performance and reliability problems. Even Tier 1 controllers aren't exempt from them.
That said, I am curious about Intel and LSI controllers I listed above. The LSI one especially so given the availability of SSD caching and other neat features.
    Hope this helps.

  • What SSD is everyone running in their MacBook Pro?

After reading different forums and posts on here I am now torn between what SSD I should install in my late 2011 MBP. The OWC Mercury Extreme Pro, Samsung 830 or the Crucial M4?
Anyone with some Pro's and Con's for me would be much appreciated.
    Thank you ahead of time!
    -Darrin

While the Samsung 830 Series is the fastest one out there (it's also the one being used on the Retina Version), some people have issues with it, if your mb is earlier than 2010.
I use Crucial M4 as with a couple of other people I know in this forum and swear by it. Not as fast as the Samsung 830 series though but much cheaper.
Haven't got any experience with the Mercury Extreme Pro.
In any event, either one will boost the speed of your 2011 MB Pro.
Crucial being the cheaper one, will also perform well.  Go with the Samsung if you can afford it.

  • Adding a vidio card for a hp palviloin 500-023w what is compatibale for me how many slots ?

adding a  vidio  card for a  hp palviloin 500-023w  what is compatibale for me how many slots ?

    Brule01, welcome to the forum.
There are two main things to consider when adding / upgrading a video card: 1) the wattage required to run it properly and 2) the length of the card.
Most newer mid-level video cards require at least 400W to operate properly.  The power supply unit (PSU) in the computer is 300W.  Therefore, to add a discrete video card will require a PSU upgrade, as well.  A card that will work with the existing 300W PSU will not be much, if any, better than the Integrated Video.  I recommend at least 500W (600W would be good for future upgrades).  I like OCZ and Corsair PSU's.  They are very good quality.
The video card has to be PCI Express x16 and it can be a double card.  The double cards only use one slot, but because of the width they may cover a second slot making it unavailable.  This is normally not a problem for most users.  Your computer case is mid-size.  Therefore, I recommend a card that is no longer than 9".  This will assure that it fits into the space provided.  You can choose a card and get the measurements.  Then, you can make a cardboard template of it to see if it will fit.  You should add 1" to the template if the card has additional power connector/s.  I like XFX, EVGA, Sapphire and PNY cards in that order.  This comes from spending many years on enthusist / gaming forums.

  • Looking at External SSD Drive for Lightroom Editing - How Can I Set This Up and Which Drive?

I'd like to purchase an external SSD drive for Lightroom editing and am hoping somebody can provide a recommendation for me.
I'm using a FW800 G-Drive to store my Lightroom Library and have been using this drive to edit.  I'd like to add an external SSD drive for editing photographs an am looking for recommendations on which drive and the best way to set this up.  I plan on having a 3rd (and maybe 4th) to save both the FW800 files and working SSD drive files as a backup.
    Any recommendations are sincerely appreciate.

I believe I was loading a preview file to 100%.  I think maybe I should just use what I have and work with it.  It's much faster than my 7 year old MBP performed that's for sure.
I was just wondering if I could spend a few hundred for an external Thunderbolt or USB 3 drive to speed up my productivity.  With the full time job and the kids, I have a little time to work on photography.  I'd love to increase my output.  I'm more than willing to spend the money on the TB or USB 3 if it would help.
The specs on the camera say 24.1 million pixels:  24.6 MB.  The raw files are

  • Best non-SSD drive for early 08 Sata I?

Hello everyone, what would be the best non-SSD HD for an early 08 machine?  I'm currently still using the 5400 250GB one that came with this machine so I'd imagine any current drive would be a huge step up from this one in terms of speed despite being held back by SATA I.  I would like for this machine to be used as a on the road Final Cut/Soundtrack so I'd prefer at least a 500GB drive.
What would you all reccomend in the 7200 speed range?  Should I bother with the Momentus XT hybrids or just stick with a traditional drive?

I agree with Templeton Peck, there is no 'best' drive.
Kappy's suggestions of Seagate drives is valid (I use them without any problems to date) but I would be hesitant about the hybrid version.  There have been issues reported in the past and personally I question the cost/benefits they afford.  I would rather spend the money on a 750GB 7200RPM drive instead, especially if you are going to do a lot of video work.
Remember that when you replace an internal HDD, you back up (Time Machine) drive should be at least the same capacity, thus you should think in terms of two HDDS.
Though you did not mention in your post, consider adding RAM if you have not done so already.
    Ciao.

  • What SSD do Apple use in MacBook Pro (Early 2011)

Hi, my MacBook is becoming a little sluggish (3 and half years of solid use) so I'm looking to give it a bit of a facelift, I've upgraded the RAM but I've read that changing from HD to SSD will improve my performance significantly, so what SSD do Apple use that will be suitable for my MacBook or can anyone reccommend anything better?
Also when I do swap to SSD if I do a backup on time machine right before, then install the new SSD, will it allow me to just restore from backup to the new drive?
    Thanks

    LukeCarberry,
you can use any SATA SSD with a 2.5 inch form factor, up to 9.5 mm tall. Your Early 2011 MacBook Pro would get best performance with a SATA III SSD, with a 6.0 Gb/s burst throughput rate. Popular SSD choices here include various models from Crucial, OWC, and Samsung, but there are certainly more options available.
If your SSD has a capacity no smaller than that of your current HDD, then you should be able to restore a Time Machine backup onto your SSD.

  • What SSD is in the X1?

Does anyone know what SSDs are in the Thinkpad X1?  126GB & 160GB info (brand, model, read & write speed, etc.) would be helpful.  Thanks.

the 128 gb option is a msata.
big for a msata that for sure.
msata is cap at sata 2 and msata disks run slower then 2.5 most of all when you look at the OTHER read writes that are more important.
probley not a intel or it would say intel and intel just makes use of marvel anyway crucial M4 or C400 to you.
however lenovo uses a intel 310 in msata and thats really a x25m not fast at all.
    old tech really.
the 160 gig is a 2.5 inch option that is intel.
port 0 allows for sata 3 full 600 speed.
intel 320 i would say as it rated slow vs the samsumg 9 series laptop ssd.
i doubt it a full out 520 with a marvel but i could be wrong.
either way it a expensive option.
you can get a m4/c400 marvel or samsung 830 sata 3 that hit 500 and have great other read writes that matter more then the silly beches they post.
sandforce i leave alone and i cant belive asus put that in aultrabook.
there also better msata choices too but if you want it stock then these are not bad choices as they wont use alot of power and are a solid ssd in terms of use.
you can google what a 320 dose in msata and 2.5''
i hear there a sata 3 msata comming in the spring but no msata port surports that and i wont expect many pc maker too.
the msata used in the macs air and ultrabooks are way different there a long stick like why they are faster cause they have more room for dram and layout of type of nand.
normally msata really hamstrings a ssd design so dont expect alot probley last gen 2.5 speeds pretty much and i talking sata 2 there not 3.
buy a samsung 830 and reload best choice bar none.

  • SSD better for rendering video?

I do lots of video and photo editing plus image design. So, tons of writes and reads to my disk. I'm waiting for the new MBPs later this year and hoping there will be some improvements in the SSDs they use.
From what I've read, SSDs suffer on writes, which can also reduce their overall life. I've also read that empty to full space should be a 1:1. Meaning, for a 128GB drive, 64GB is free and 64GB is full. Is any of that true?
I haven't been able to find any reviews related to SSD performance for video rendering or image design. Would anyone have some ideas or actually use an SSD in the above scenarios? Would it be overall faster than a 7600RPM HD in MBPs? How would it compare to a 5600RPM drive?
Interesting read on the previous post about SSD and photography editing. However, video is a constant long write (3+ hours).

You know eww I've read that in so many places, and said by so many - and yet I've never seen this to be true. I'm not saying it's impossible of course, but like I say, on a laptop I've never seen this born through.
Even a fully write saturated mid-market SSD is still significantly faster than any physical drive I've seen.
    For example:
    AJA Read/Write test - 4Gb - 640Gb Western Digital 2.5" SATA
    http://grab.by/2q0s
    AJA Read/Write test - Fully write-saturated Corsair P128 SSD
    http://grab.by/2q0c
I know it's fully write fatigued as it's running full disk encryption - which should slow it down.
Little bit different don't you think? It's the same for any test you can come up with. Small files/big files, sustained writes etc.
There are of course things to consider. You could be limiting the life span of the drive with high volume writes. Once it's write fatigued you'll need to erase it to bring it back to full performance (the example above is while it is fully write-fatigued already).
You can read about doing a 'proper' write erase on an SSD here: http://www.markc.me.uk/MarkC/Blog/Entries/2009/8/13Erasing_anSSD.html
If budget isn't a concern, and you can work with the spacing, then an SSD will leave a physical drive for dust IMO. I've been through quite a few SSDs as fortunately I don't often have to pay for my h/w.
