What to install for a "secure" computer

Hi,
I was recently reading something online that made me quite paranoid...I always have used FF with adblockplus, but that's about it. So I went ahead and installed noscript, and privoxy + tor. What else can I install to ensure a super secure machine? Which firewall is recommended?

In all seriousness, Fedora is probably a good bet for a secure distro because it's package manager has package signing (Arch does not yet), meaning it would be harder for someone to "trick" your computer into installing a malicious package. Obviously, there are still plenty of people using Arch, so this is not a huge threat. Fedora also has SELinux installed and configured by default, I think. SELinux gives each app a more finely tuned set of permissions. Theoretically, I could run App A and it could change the setting for App B just because it has access to my whole home directory. SELinux fixes that and much more advanced stuff.
If you are only afraid of the scary internet corporations (Google, Your ISP, Your Government), like I am, you can also look into installing Ghostery Firefox extension or setting NoScript to block "Web Bugs" (it's in the advanced tab, I believe).
Also make sure that all cookies are deleted when Firefox closes.
Also make sure to block "flash cookies." Do a search for LSO's or install BetterPrivacy Firefox extension.
Use Ixquick or Scroogle for your web searches instead of Google.
Software firewalls are redundant if you are behind a router, so that shouldn't help you sleep at night.

• What to install for guided procedure?

Hi All
I don't know anything about guided procedure. I learned from CAF-GP: Configuration Guide of help.sap.com the I need to edit some parameters in Global Configuration> Server
> Services > caf/eu/gp/model.
I could not find the service caf/eu/gp/model. Do I need to install something?
I am using WEBAS 6.4 SP 15.
Please help
Thanks
Raktim

Hi Raktim,
You need to be in a NW04s environment to use Guided Procedures. They are not available before NW04s.
This means you need a EP 7.0 Portal and (preferably for production) also a WebAs 7.0 backend.

• Security warning wants to install certification for a remote computer

Every bootup, before opening anything, i get a Security Warning that a "oracle" certificate wants to install for a remote computer to access my machine. I always click no, having no idea what this is, and I certainly do not want to allow a remote computer to access. I have screen shots of the details but I don't see how to attach a jpg here. I've searched the registry and startup items and nothing resembles my issue. Please note this does not occur when opening IE or FF, but as soon as Windows loads the desktop screen, as if the registry is triggering this cert.

Many thanks. I am somewhat experienced in editing the registry, and know where all the 'run' and 'runonce' strings are located. I have searched them all. I have also searched the reg for terms used in the security warning. I've run CC cleaner, malwarebytes, norton security, and two online security sites, and they call come back normal. No problems.
But I reboot and there is the warning, telling me that an Oracle certificate wants to install to enable a remote computer access. Of course I click NO, but I cannot find how to kill the beast.

• Flash Player 10 Installed for 1,256th Time

I cannot view videos. I get prompted to re-install flash each time I visit YouTube or this other site I use. I've uninstalled and re-installed. But keep getting prompted to re-install, and still cant see the videos. I tried installing FireFox because one of the admins on a site recommended it, and I can watch videos. I don't care to use FireFox, and I'm trying to find a solution for IE.
Thanks,
Don

Hi W, well I think the forum has been acting up today. I have received the same message and it logged me off while showing the sign out sign:-)
Ok, now let's see what is installed for Flash Player. Do you know how to find the Flash folder?
C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash Right click on the Flash folder and post back everything listed. You'll need to right click on the NPSWF32.dll and the NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe and click on Properties to get the version numbers, which
I need along with the IE files.
Then using IE, find Tools>add ons and look for Shockwave Flash Object...ActiveX Control...Flash10e.ocx and it must be enabled. If any other is listed, I need to know that also. (vs 10.0.45.2)
Then using FF, find the SWF plug-in vs 10.0.45.2 and it needs to be enabled as well. If there is another SWF listed, I need to know that also and the version.
Are you the Administrator?
What Anti-Virus/Spyware do you run and version number please.
Any 3rd party Toolbars installed? If so which?
Ad-block with FF?(Firefox)
Any pop-up/ad blocker software installed?
That will do for starters.
Thanks.

Hello, I d like to buy Lightroom but first I want to know if this is possible to install it on two different computers? If not, what happen if I change my computer. Thks for your help.

The standard licence covers installation on any two computers - one being in use at any time.
If you change computers, simply uninstall from the old machine and install on the new - Lightroom doesn't use "dial home" activation and deactivation.

The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

What's the best fix for a slow computer?

What model computer? What are your primary uses and apps?
First thing anyone can do is replace or upgrade the system boot drive to SSD. Makes a very nice improvement.
How new or old is it? What version of OS X is it running?
Maybe it won't run faster but could run better with more RAM.
Take a look at all the tabs in Activity Monitor. If not on the Dock, go into Applications/Utilities and open it and keep it on the dock. Can tell you what is using your processor the most, RAM usage, disk and network I/O.
Don't install things that aren't needed. That can be counter intuitive to some but 'less is more' and some just really pull a computer system down. Security programs, "clean up programs" and others.

• Troubleshooting tips for installing Telstra Online Security

Following are some common scenarios you may encounter while installing Telstra Online Security.
Possible active x issues
When Clicking on the ActiveX download bar, I see the option "Run add-on" instead of "Install ActiveX"? This occurs if you have previously installed or attempted to install BigPond Security on this computer. Because the Active X component is already installed you can choose the option "Run Add-on" to progress with the installation.
When I click to download the ActiveX component, I am taken back to the beginning of the installation Wizard.
This occurs when your browser has installed the ActiveX component, but cannot run the newly installed Active X component and needs to refresh itself. Continue with the Installation Web Wizard if you have been directed back to the first page.
Other known issues
Whilst installing Telstra Online Security you may experience issues which can cause the Windows Based Installation Wizard (WBIW) to fail.
Fail to load ActiveX download bar
WBIW freezes during System Check Stage
Fails to download Telstra Online Security components
General Internet Explorer error messages during WBIW
Perform Windows Update and remove conflicting software
Prior to trying any of the solutions please ensure you have:
Completed the Windows Update process, and
Removed any conflicting 3rd Party applications.
Resolving Issues
You should only perform the following for issues which cannot be resolved by updating Windows and removing conflicting software:
Step 1
Please download the file FixIE.bat file (Registers Internet Explorer and MSXML files needed by the Web Installer)
Step 2
Close all opened Internet Explorer windows
Step 3
Double click the FixIE.bat file
Step 4
Re-launch Internet Explorer application, and follow previously used link to launch the Telstra Online Security WBIW and follow required steps.

It doesn't address what I needed help with
When accessing Big Pond Security through Telstra My Account, the computers I had downloaded Big Pond Security to used to be identified by name. Now only told I have downloaded to 4 computers, with 4 icons, but nothing to identify which icon belongs to which computer.Decided to rename the computer I am currently logged into, and reinstall. Do that but then do not have product key.

• Custom Install for Production Computer

Hello, I have a few rather simple questions that I am hoping someone can help me with...
1. I am adding a new MacPro to the mix for production work (photoshop, Indesign, Lightroom etc..) and I would like to drastically dumb down the machine to just run a few graphic/image programs. I don't want it to have anything else installed (garageband, mail, ICal etc....)
I will have it connected to the internet so I am able to update the software but I don't want it to have any browsers installed for internet access.
It has been a few years since I installed my OS and I can't remember exactly what the options are....So what I am wondering is what is the best way to do this? Can I choose not to install them when the system arrives "preinstalled" or should I just uninstall everything that I do not want?
I know this seems like a simple question but I do not consider myself a computer wizard.
2. On my current machine I have a lot of customization such as keyboard shortcuts, photoshop actions, program settings etc.... is there a way to transfer that information easily over to the new machine, since it will be configured very similar
3. I plan on getting the machine with the 640Gb drive but I have considered putting my 250gb SATA2 drive in slot one to keep the OS and software separate and then moving the new 640Gb to slot 2 just for file storage. My reasoning for this is I am currently not using that 250Gb drive and it would give me a little more space...and probably keep my system a little cleaner. is there any advantage/disadvantage to this?
4. I don't know a whole lot about disk images but could I essentially create an image of the 250Gb main OS drive and then if I ran into any sort of hard drive failure I could replace the drive, restore it and that way I wouldn't loose all of my custom settings? The 640Gb would be copied daily to an external drive (I have a RAID setup in my current machine with 2 1Tb drives but I do not want to RAID this machine).
Basically I want to try and have this system set up in the most optimal way to protect my data, keep everything clean and run my programs smoothly.... so any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated...
Hope that makes sense... Thanks!

Thanks so much for the responses they are very helpful.
Samsara
I do already have Chronosynch and it appears that is very similar to Super Duper?
From what I gather is Time machine requires a drive approx 3x larger?
Thanks I will look into Diskwarrior... I have never heard of it.
The Hatter
1. I do have other computers with internet access, this one I am just trying to isolate because in all honesty the internet can be a huge time waster for the bored or undisciplined...
Am I missing something I may require a browser for other than surfing the internet? I can do all software updates within the program.. But I would sure hate to remove it and then need it... although I can always reinstall.
2. thanks
3. Thanks.. makes sense
"I'd pull the 250GB as backup external off line, and fill the machine with 3 new drives for media, libraries, projects, scratch, editing."
Could you please explain more about the above?
No, I am not using Lacie drives. My RAID drives are Seagate Barracudas and it is configured in Disk Utility... and I am obsessed with backups.. I run a Chronosynch backup every few days of my whole 1tb drive... it is kept off site and I also have dvds of source files kept off site as well... I have even been known to carry a set of dvd's in my car or memory cards in my pocket so I have a duplicate off site copy just to run to the store in case the house burns down... lol. But I appreciate the concern.

Conditional 0-q Minimum Security Level (MSL) (see A.1.1.4.2.5)and more description like this:
The position of the new menu entries is an absolute position among the existing ones.
A part of the item identifier shall be under the control of the card system and the other
part under the control of the card issuer. Item identifiers are split in two ranges:
-     [1,127] under control of the card issuer;
- [128,255] under the control of the toolkit framework.
If the requested item identifier is already allocated, or in the range [128,255], then the
card shall reject the install command. If the requested item identifier is '00', the card shall
take the first free value in the range [128,255].These pair fields *"Position of the first menu entry ('00' means last position)"* and

What purpose do these fields describe? Let give some example for me!
