Help discovering what's wrong w/ my before update trigger

Let me prefix this w/ the fact that I'm an idiot, so be kind.
I have one trigger that is not working (seemingly), and I am about googled out so I thought I'd ask and see if anyone couldn't provide thoughts, insults, suggestions or what have you.
Database being used is 10g XE and updates are being done transactionally.
I have a table that stores (among other things) the status of a particular type of (app specific) transaction. When that status changes to a particular value, I have a trigger that updates another table with the date that this status change took place.

and here is what my trigger looks like:

here's what I've been able to gather through testing & viewing logs from the trigger:
1. there's no exception being logged,
2. the pre/post update logs with all the correct data (proving that the trigger is fired),
3. when I update xtransaction from visual studio (through the oracle addin which lets you run queries against the database), the status is changed, the trigger is fired, and the other table is updated.
4. when the application that normally updates the xtransaction table runs, xtransaction is updated, the trigger is fired, and sometable is not updated.
so I have absolutely no clue where to go with this one. Usually I could fire up sql server's query analyser and watch what's coming through, and I've tried to use toad's commercial tool to do this, but to no avail. I've tried changing it to an after update, but had the same results. I wrote this some months ago, and it was working then, but not now.

I'm trying to share to Media Browser a 20 minute still slide show with music and text. I have tried several times to save at 1080 HD, but just before it's finished, a message box pops up saying "File already open with write permission." What's this mean?

I'd like to finalize it 1080 hd and have tried several times, but just before it's finished, a message box pops up saying it can't be done because "File already open with with write permission." What does this mean? All files are closed; this iMovie project is the only thing open. Does it mean one of the song files from iTunes? And should I just settle for saving it as a "large" file, which is what I'm trying right now?

I never used icloud before so there is no data to back up from. I just spoke to the apple store and they said that if I do plug it in, all the data will be swiped....is there a program I can use to transfer my data from my phone to computer without loosing it all ???

Unchecked items will not play unless specifically clicked on. They will not be included on shuffle and will not be synced to ipods.

you should probably charge it. Plug it into the wall charger and let it sit overnight. Then hold both the crown and side buttons together while it's charging for 10 seconds or more and it should turn on.

Trigger ComboBox change handler before application displays

I have a ComboBox in a foods catalog, with has a list of categories, say, like this:
All Categories
Meats
Fish
Pasta
All categories are loaded at first, then, on the change event in the ComboBox, the food catalog is filtered and only foods in the selected category are displayed.
I want to eliminate the "All Categories" choice and just have the other three options in the ComboBox – On initial display, the ComboBox selectedItem would be Meats (selectedIndex = 0) but all the catalog items appear because the entire catalog is created on Application creationComplete.
The ComboBox is in a custom component.
The change handler is defined in that same component.
So, what I really need is to trigger that change handler before the display appears.
How do I achieve this?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This morning's sync/backup resulted in me losing most of my contacts, and for the contacts that remain, 99% of the phone numbers are gone. I can recover my calendar entries from this past week, but I don't know how I can recover all of them from my May 2012 backup.
Since I had a backup just last week, I'd like to just go back to it. But how? Or, is there another way to get my contacts restored? And why did they disappear? And what else may be gone that I just don't know about yet?

What trigger should I use if I want to keep record amendment log?

I am a newbie to Oracle forms, I would like to raise a simple question here ... hope you won't mind ... I have a form interface which accepts user input to record attributes for an object (e.g. personal information of a user). Now, because the importance of data, I was required to write log records in a journal table for changes made on the data. What trigger am I recommended to place and use?

Duncan, thanks for your reply first. However, I have two queries:
1) Any generic event state to indicate change of record rather than 'POST-INSERT', 'POST-UPDATE' and 'POST-DELETE'?
2) Given that I use the 'POST' event, how can I get the pre-update value? (My log record is supposed to record the before-update value)
