What will keep a system from sleeping, other than user activity?

If I'm, say, running a long video transcode, will that prevent automatic sleep, or might sleep kick in anyway in the middle of things and possibly screw them up? I think this may have happened, so I'm considering disabling automatic sleep if it presents this sort of liability. TIA... Mark

Programs actively writing to disk should keep a system from sleeping. That said, I've always turned off sleep on my systems when doing important processing, just to be sure. Some software can pause for significant amounts of time and while they should still be keeping the processor working and so prevent sleep, it's not foolproof, so I err on the side of caution and set my systems not to sleep other than the monitor when they're going to be processing for a while.
Regards.

  • PHD from directory other than /Users

    Hi All,
I have gotten PHD to work with my Leopard Server 10.5.6, but only if the directory is located in /Users.
When I try to create an account with Workgroup Manager on another volume (say, my large RAID which is where I really want it, /raid/phd ), there is always an error saying that the network home is unavailable, contact system admin, or something to that tune. I shut off all the Guest login stuff on /Users and turned it on for /raid/phd and I can log in to the account as if it were a standard file share.
I have tried making aliases back to /Users (both ln -s and Option-Drag) but it does not work.
Unfortunately I can not simply install the OS over on the raid device and be done with it--it would be a lot of work.
    Does anyone have a solution?

    Hi
    +Does anyone have a solution?+
Yes. Possibly? Without knowing too much about your environment you could:
Unshare the Users folder. Navigate to the desired folder on the RAID. Set it to share. Configure it to automount for home directories. Now launch WorkGroup Manager. Select a User and under the Homes tab you should see the path for the newly created sharepoint You'll probably see the path for the previous one as well. Ignore this and simply select the new one. Click Create Home Now and click Save.
Verify the folder has been created by navigating to the parent folder. If you populate the LDAP node with desired users and provided the correct path is defined in the Advanced tab you can issue:
    sudo createhomefolder -a
from the command line. This will create home folders for all your users. Or you could simply the use the GUI a user at a time or select them all and click create home now followed by save. You should be able to see the folders being created by having the parent folder open.
Have you enabled ACLs for the RAID? If not issue:
    sudo fsaclctl -p /Volumes/raid -d enable
Make sure you restart the Server afterwards.

  • Is there an AppleScript or Automator Script that will wake a Mac from Sleep?

Is there an AppleScript or Automator Script that will wake a Mac from Sleep?

    Frank and All,
The following answer to your question above is complicated, but I hope it explains why my question was formed with so much frustration in it.
I have an OpenOffice(OO) Macro that was launched with Calendar at 6pm each business night. It ran properly in all Apples operating systems until I Hit Maverick(OSX10.9). From then on, the AppleScript would run from one to 3 days, then would disappear from the Calendar entry. The Calendar alert would still run, but the "OpenFile" section of the alert would disappear. I also was running elgato EyeTV HD during the day, so I would use energy saver to put my MacBook Pro to sleep at 12 Midnight and wake it again at 9am. I picked up a used Mac Mini to do the EyeTV stuff, provide AppleTV the files in H264 format through iTunes' media share, and found it had plenty of power to do the 6pm automated stuff simultaneously as well. Because I still wanted to run the OpenOffice Macro on my MacBook Pro at 6pm, and wanted to use it for a host of other things when I was on the road, I wanted it to sleep most of the time and only wake up automatically to run the 6pm OO Macro. When I called Apple about the issue I was having with Maverick and Calendar loosing the OpenFile command as part of the Alert Message, they told me the no longer supported answering AppleScript Questions but they now would support Automator questions. I pointed out that the OpenFile would also fail after one to three days if I used a Calendar Alert to launch an Automator App. At first, I did not like Automator, but now I see why Apple is pushing us to use it. Automator adds a TIME STAMP ID to the Apps developed in Automator so the first time you launch the App after a change to it, you must reply to a dialog message saying that this is the first time you are running this version of the App. If a Scammer has replaced your app with one that can reek havoc on your computer, the replacement app will not run unless you are there to agree that you know where the modified app came from and click the OK button to continue (BRILLIANT, Enhanced Security idea on Apples part). I also noticed that after Mountain Lion, the Applescript delay timing was all screwed up as well. Well I tried to use LaunchD Task Scheduler to circumvent the Calendar Problem and that worked until I upgraded to Yosemite Last week. Then LaunchD no longer worked and I am only into a few days of using The Calendar Launched Automator App to see if it will continue to run.
But I think I solved the dilemma I was having with opening an Automator App in a Sleeping Mac. I Googled up the following question, "AppleScript to wake up computer".  I went thru several complex responses until I found this on that is INCREDIBLE EASEY! What came back was a brettterpstra.com  response from Feb 20th,2014. What it said, in a Quick Tip: caffeinated your Terminal Article,  if you wanted to wake a Mac from sleep, use the Terminal command named "Caffeine -u -t 1". I placed it in an Automator Most Used Action called "Run Shell Script -- Caffeine -u -t 1" and it worked!  Now, I can put my Mac to Sleep but at 6pm, the Automator App will launch, run the "Caffeine -u- -t 1" command and proceed to work as if I had awakened the Mac From Sleep mode by pressing a keyboard key and had run the Automator Script with a double click.
Sorry for the long, drawn-out reply, but maybe this will help others.

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. The purpose of this test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My iMac will not wake up from sleep after upgrading to OS X Mavericks

After upgrading to OS X, my iMac will not wake up from sleep.  Each time I have to do a hard restart.  Is there a fix for this problem?

    Hi,
I have just had the same problem with my iMac and after upgrading to Mavericks my iMac would not wake without pressing the power off button and re-booting.
Anyway, I have since done a complete new install on my iMac and have gone 5 days without an issue with the iMac not waking.  It was a bit of a pain to do but my own view so far is that the problem is linked to the upgrading of the OS instead of a clean install.
My iMac now flies with a new OS installed instead of an upgrade.

  • Maverick will not wake up from sleep

Maverick will not wake up from sleep. i dont see any related issues. maybe i am the only one? Ive been trying to run maverick for the last 2 months. I thought everything was fine after I erased, reformated and partitioned the HD and installed Maverick on a clean drive......  and then i get the ? startup disk. And then when it does run, I cant let it go to sleep. It will not wake up from sleep. I get the spinning beach ball of death everytime. I leave my computer on and run to the grocery store and come back........ I have to shut my computer off from the control strip and push the start button, every time.
Anyone know if this will damage my computer??
I have selected the HD in the preferences startup; I've unplugged it for several minutes; started up in S mode; zapped the P ram; ran permissions; you name it. im at a loss.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should i buy another Mac? I cant afford one in this economy.

I suggest you use the Recovery Partition Disk Utility to check the hard disk and then re-install the OS from there.

  • What is preventing my Mac from sleeping?

Ever since installing Lion, both of my Mac Pros don't sleep properly.
When the machine wakes, the Mail notification sound, sounds many, many times.  EG:  If I have receives 100 emails since sleep, it notifies me 100 times.
How can I tell what is preventing my Mac from sleeping, or is this multiple mail sound something else?

There are few threads in this site discussing the same issue.
    Causes sited are
File sharing as mentioned in your post,
    Recently installed antivirus software,
    External HD not properly ejected,
    Print Que not cleared
and Mail constantly checking for new mail that you can change in Mail > Preference >General.
    Solutions suggested are
    Reset PRAM and SMC
and Repair Disk using  Recovery HD.
    Best.

  • Is there a way to access 11i from outside other than Self service?

Is there a way to access 11i from outside other than Self service?
I could connect any application from inside the firewall (basically router) and can not access screens from outside. Eventhough port forwarding 80 allows us upto initial screen, it does not go further.
    Any workaround/suggestions
    Jiltin

    Hi Jiltin,
If you can migrate your forms server into Forms Listener Servlet. This will allow you to use forms outside firewall provided atleast one port(assuming yours 80) is open.
Ref to the M.Link Note 201340.1 for how to setup forms listener servlet.

  • Forwarding proxy requests from ports other than 80

    Hi,
Is there a way to forward requests from ports other than 80 to the proxy address? For example, trying to define a rule to forward the requests from port 8080 to proxy_ip...
    Best regards,
    Emre

    Hi Emre,
Have you looked into using ipfilter port redirecting ?
It may depend on your configuration.
    /etc/ipf/ipf.conf
pass in quick from any to any port = 8080 keep state
pass out quick from any port = 8080 to any keep state
    /etc/ipf/ipnat.conf
    rdr <Interface> <hostname or IP> port 8080 -> <hostname or IP> port 8080 tcp

  • Activating phone bought from source other than Verizon

If I buy a phone from someplace other than Verizon, how do I go about activating it and using it.

First, before buying it, make sure it is a Verizon-branded phone. These are the only phones compatible with Verizon's network. Secondly, make sure to get the ESN from the seller and call Verizon Customer Service to make sure it is CLEAN. Third, after both of these check out, purchase it, and when you receive it, just dial *228 from it and select option 1 (make sure your current phone is OFF for this) Or you can go online to My Verizon and activate it there. If you are going from a non-smartphone to a smartphone, you will need to add the $29.99/month data plan, and vice versa.
