When I click on a mailto: link, Thunderbird says it's already running but there is no Thunderbird process running.

I opened Firefox on a freshly rebooted PC, went to click on a mailto: link in a webpage and get the error message that Thunderbird is already running. Thunderbird is not running, but will not open for sending email.
The cause could have something to do with Firefox not opening Thunderbird correctly, or that Thunderbird is not getting the correct permissions to run properly when called by Firefox.
When I start Thunderbird from it's icon, I get a Windows 7 prompt asking me if I want to allow this program to make changes on my computer. If Thunderbird is started by Firefox asking it to create a mail message, as is the case with a mailto: link, It never gets this permission requester.
I have tried troubleshooting information regarding Thunderbird already running error messages, however, there are no .lock files associated with Thunderbird nor is it's ability to send/receive mail when run from it's own icon affected by this problem. I therefore think it's a problem with the way in which Firefox calls Thunderbird to create an email message.
There is the additional problem that Thunderbird has to have administrative privileges to run, but doesn't automatically get them. This might require a separate bug report submission be generated to the Thunderbird developers to fix this problem, but is dependent on what they can do about that.

The reason firefox is not able to launch thunderbirds is because it cannot start thunderbird as administrator unless firefox is running as administrator, try to start firefox as administrator user then click the link.
It should work.
To start a program as '''administrator on windows''', '''RIght Click''' on the iFF con and choose '''Run as Administrator''', then press yes when the user access control box pops.

• Firefox will not open my email client when I click on a "mailto" link on any website. How can I fix this.

Anytime I drag my cursor across, or try to click on a "mailto" email link on any webpage, it will display an incorrect e-mail address (it seems to default to one in particular). It will not open a new e-mail window and if I "copy e-mail address" it's the wrong one. I've tried everything and was hoping with new updates the problem would solve itself but obviously it hasn't.
HELP ! This is driving me CRAZY

For the settings to check to ensure that Firefox opens your email client, see [[changing the e-mail program used by Firefox]]. I don't know why it shows the wrong email address.

HI,
It is possible to close the main window of some apps and not have it Quit.
This will mean it should show the lightened area under the app in the DOCK.
Clicking the icon in the Dock should at least bring the app name to the Menu Bar.
The Window Menu of most will tell you the Keystrokes to bring a window to the "Front" or make it visible again.
I have come across this when one version gets installed without removing a previous version.
Sometimes caused by putting all browsers in a sub folder and not loose in Applications.
In most cases with one install using the DOCK, CMD + Tab, the Application Folder > App Icon double click brings the App to the "Front".
Please note that "Categorising" the Tread with all the options does not always get the people with the right knowledge to your Thread.
I know about the Messages App.
I know the broader strokes of how the OS works (Not so good at explaining it)

• Some times when I load Firefox, I get a message saying Firefox is already running. The only solution I have found is to reboot the system.

This happens when no other processes are running. Looks to me like their should be a option in the message to stop the running process.

Sounds like Firefox is "hanging at exit".

• I can't update firefox. When I click on the upate link it says to click on the fire fox at the top of the page. There is no firefox at the top of the page.

The firefox button was the icon top left on your Firefox window. If you have a newer version of Firefox the button to use is the new {three bar icon) menu button -> Help {(?) icon) -> About Firfefox.
If you are unable to use that method then download a fresh copy of Firefox, from getfirefox.com save it on your machine, and then run the installer. Do NOT use any option to remove information, any offer to reset or refresh, and do not use any third party uninstaller.

• I use aol mail, and I want to change my mailto: to aol. Firefox won't let me do that. When I click on an email link in a webpage, my computer goes nuts.

When I click on an email link on a webpage, my computer goes crazy. (Please note that links to other websites are fine.) My computer seems to want to link me to Internet Explorer, which I don't use often. The computer starts running very fast and hot. Sometimes, I get a multitude of identical error messages from Explorer, and it is often hard to delete them!
I thought maybe I could solve this by changing my mailto: client, but there is no link for Aol. Please help!
Thanks.
ericasaunt
PS: Why am I still on AOL? I still use the first email address I got many years ago. Friends and clients know my email and use it to contact me. I don't want to change it.

Hi, cor-el,
Thank you for responding so quickly!
I tried to follow the instructions, but it didn't work. There are 10 mimeTypes.rdf files on my computer!
I tried to follow the website instructions of
Tools -> Options -> Content / File Types -> Manage
but once I get to Content I am stuck. No Manage button. (there is nothing that says File Types)
What do you suggest?
Thanks again.

• When I click on a email link my default outlook doesn't open. Instead gmail keeps opening. I have outlook checked as default already

When I click on a email link my default outlook doesn't open. Instead gmail keeps opening. I have outlook checked as default already

There are 2 settings to check for email programs, one is the Windows default email program which you probably already have set to Outlook. The other is a Firefox setting that determines how it handles mailto links. The second one may be set to Gmail. For details see [[Changing the e-mail program used by Firefox]]

• How do I change from my old email provider to the new one so when i click on a web link I dont get the old proviser which I no long have?

Often webpages contain links to someone who can be contacted just by clicking on the contained link and then one's email service pops up with the required email address etc filled in. However i have recently change service provider and I still get the old provider showing which I no longer have, when I click on such website links. How do I get the new provider to show?

For Firefox you would generally have Use system default if on your system , or choose a web based system such as GMmail
:T00ls > Options > Applications > mailto: (drop down has choices)
Windows OS
:Control Panel > Default Programs > choose program if on your system or Firefox if web based email

Firefox sent an email to me to confirm that I had asked the above question. The email had a link to click. When I clicked it from Firefox, nothing happened. Then I opened IE, signed into Comcast, opened the email, clicked the link, and it brought me here.

• Tabs don't close when I click more then 10 links

After updating to Firefox 11 a strange problem occurs when I click more then 10 links and try to close them: the links don't close and I have to close the window. This never happend before. I do some paid to click programs and have to click many links, so this is not very nice... Does anyone recognise this and is there already a fix for it?
Thanks!
