When I last synced my iphone 4s it showed a chunk of memory called other.  What is this and how can I get rid of it.

I recently synced my IPHONE 4S to my pc and much to my surprise there was an area marked as OTHER.  It is about 4Gig in size and I have no idea what it contains or how to get rid of it.  Can some one help me.
