When is it appropriate to use a servlet in a JSP/JSF environment?

I have inherited a fairly old JSP-based application. I know that I need to update its technologies, in particular the use of AJAX so that I don't need to keep refreshing the page each time I want more data from the server. The problem is that I don't know a great deal about other technologies. There seem to be so many conflicting opinions about the way to go regarding servlets and JSP and JSF (and possibly JavaBeans). I am probably going to start using JSF and AJAX. I mention this to give you some background info. My real question is: when is best/appropriate to use a servlet? From what I have seen I do not want to use a servlet for generating HTML output - that seem just so last decade! But do they still have a good use over more modern technologies? Also, when is it appropriate to use JavaBeans? Are JavaBeans a thing of the past (or just plain inappropriate) for web applications?
Regards,

I suggest going to the bookstore and looking for a book on JSF and reading it cover to cover. It may tell you where servlets come into the picture (if at all). I suggest paying attention to MVC design that it discusses, and working through the examples before working on your project (assuming you have the time). Then creating a simple project and refactor it over and over to meet MVC.
For your project, I suggest just doing ONE JSF page (and its underlying database access) and refactor it over and over again (MVC) before doing the other JSF pages. This way, you dont have to refactor 34 JSF pages to correct the same mistake appearing in all the pages (saves a LOT of time).
I don't know enough about AJAX to really comment on it. However, I would ask myself if refreshing the JSF page is really enough of a concern for your end-users to make it worth while to use AJAX on this project.

  • Problem for getting the real path using one servlet and one jsp page

    I have one tomcat machine and several virtual domains. Eahc virtual domain has one realpath in the disc.
    I am using one servlet and one jsp page for using this servlet.
    my purpose is to load, using the servlet , the real path for the domains (eahc domain has its path).
    for this i make this:
    the servlet code is this:
    package utils.ticker;

    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.net.*;

    ServletContext myContext= getServletContext();
    String abspath = myContext.getRealPath("/");
    //here i want to return the real path
    return abspath;
    public static void main(String args[]){
    and the jsp page is:
    <%@ page import="utils.ticker.*" %>
    <jsp:useBean id="tick" class="utils.ticker.Edicion" scope="session"/>
    <html><head><body>
    <%
    tick.cc();
    %>
    </body></head></html>
    But this produces one error, NullPointerException and dont shows me the real path.
    Can anyone help me?
    thanks

    i have put this into one sevlet:
    package utils.ticker;
    import javax.servlet.ServletContext;
    public class Edicion{
    private ServletContext myContext;
    public Edicion(ServletContext myContext) {
    this.myContext = myContext;
    public String getCC(){
    return myContext.getRealPath("/");
    and in the jsp page this:
    <%@ page contentType="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" language="java" import="java.sql.*"%>
    <%@ page import="utils.ticker.*" %>
    <jsp:useBean id="tick" class="utils.ticker.Edicion" scope="session"/>
    <html><head><body>
    <%=tick.getCC()%>
    </body></head></html>
    but appear this error in the tomcat.
    Can you, please, help me. i am trying to solve this during one week and i am desesperate.

  • Using a servlet in a jsp

    Hi, I have recently been having problems with embedding a servlet within a JSP. I have attempted to do this by using a frame within the JSP and using JSP include tags however, nothing seems to display. The reason why I want to do this is because I need to take advantage of servlet persistence which JSPs do not have, plus, I want to use the JSP to refresh the page produced by the servlet every so often using AJAX.
    Any ideas? Thanks,
    --R

    A JSP becomes a pure servlet on compilation. What persistence are u looking in a JSP ?
    One reason you do not get anything is I am not tried this but I dont think its going to interpret the servlet code very well in the JSP page.
    An include JSP tag includes another jsp/file inline and not sure if he can do a servlet there ?

  • When is it appropriate to use DataSource (or Connection pooling)?

    Hello all,
    I'm having some design issues with my application and I'm starting to think that maybe using Connection pooling is not suited for my application. I'm using Tomcat 5.5.12 if it's any relevant..
    The architecture of our application looks like this:
    Servlets -> App Helper classes -> DB/Accessor classes
    looks like the three-tier architecture described in this document: http://www.subrahmanyam.com/articles/servlets/ServletIssues.html
    I have read on the Tomcat docs that said that using DataSource is good practice and improves efficiency since it recycles database connections. However, if the accessor/DB classes are not servlets, how can I use the DataSource facility that interacts with Tomcat?
    I would like to know whether it is a good idea to use DataSource in my case and if so, how? (since they are not servlets)
    Thanks in advance :)

    Hi. Thank you for replying.
    In the examples that I've seen that use JNDI for Database access, it seems that DataSource is always used--in other words, JNDI and DataSource always seem to be used together (in Servlets). I have not found a case where JNDI is used by itself to access the Database--perhaps I'm not looking in the right place. Could you point me to some documentation maybe?
    Thanks a lot!

  • When is it appropriate to use "spanning-tree bpdufilter enable"

    What exactly does enabling bpdu filter do?  I see some examples where bpdu filtering is enabled on access ports?  Is this correct or are there dangers in this approach?

    Hi John,
    Simple way of saying would that it would disable the STP on that port.
    BPDU filter filters the BPDU's coming in both directions. which means it effectively disable the STP on the port.
    Detailed explanation:
    ===============
    BPDUfilter on the other hand just filters BPDUs in both directions, which effectively disables STP on the port.Bpdu filter will prevent inbound and outbound bpdu but will remove portfast state on a port if a bpdu is received.Enabling BPDU filtering on an interface is the same as disabling spanning tree on it and can result in spanning-tree loops.
    Following are the method to configure BPDU Filter in switches
    Interface mode:
    spanning-tree bpdufilter enable                        (Results port to not participate in STP, loops may occur).
    Global mode:
    spanning-tree portfast bpdufilter default             (It enables bpdufiltering on ports that have port-fast configuration, so it sends a few bpdu while enabling port then it filters bdpu unless receives a bpdu, after that itchanges from port-fast mode and disables filtering for port to operate like a normal port cause it has received bpdu).
    You always should allow STP to run on a switch to prevent loops. However, in special cases when you need to prevent BPDUs from being sent or processed on one or more switch ports, you can use BPDU filtering to effectively disable STP on those ports.you would use bpdufilter when you want a switch plugged into your network but you don't want it participating in spanning tree.
    An example:  In an office environment where someone needs  another network drop under their desk but you don't have time/budget to  run a new line for now.  you are been given a small switch but don't want it to break spanning tree.The switch  you have lying around for this task is a simple unmanaged switch and  will only have one uplink into your network. so you put bpdufilter on your  switch port.

    I am trying to find out how to assign files with particular extensions to the appropriate software. At the moment when I create a file using Word it is apparently given the extension .docx but Word doesn't recognise its own files. How do I allocate the extension .docx to Word? There used to be a way of doing it, I think under "Preferences" but I can't seem to find it.

  • Weblogic.utils.NestedRuntimeException when using javax.servlet.Filter

    IDE: JDev 10gR3.4 & JDev 11gR2.3
    ViewController technology: JSF/ADF Faces
    Example code flow:
    Run page2.jsf
    MyFilter intercepts request, checks for parameter on session.
    If parameter not null, goto page2.jsf
    Else redirect to page1.jsf
    page1.jsf has a button that sets the value on the session scope after clicking.
    In jdev 11gR2.3, I get an weblogic.utils.NestedRuntimeException after clicking the button on page1.jsf. This error does not occur in jdev 10gR3.5. I dont believe that solution pertains to my case. clicked() is invoked from standard jsf page and the adf controller is not acquired yet. i put a couple of print statements in the filter and it seems that the doFilter is called twice! This is not the case when running in 10g.

  • Long running reports using java servlets

    Hello,
    I'm running into a problem using java servlets to produce database reports and sending them back to the client browser as excel or html. The problem comes into play when the user has submitted two reports then goes to run a third and the browser hangs. I realized now that this is because of the two active connections that the user already has to the app server. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around this? I'm trying to now write the report to the server, and provide the browser with a url, but it seams as though the connection isn't totally closed even though I close the response printwriter.... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

    Unfortunately I dont have an answer to your question, but:
    If the reports are large/long running, should they be generated on demand? You could schedule the reports to be generated every day, month or whenever appropriate, stored on the server and then quickly pulled by the user whenever needed.

    My iPad 4 does not show up on my TV screen when in AirPlay mirroring mode using WiFi.  The iPad displays AirPlay set to TV with the Mirroring On (green).
    My iPad IOS software is 8.2 and my Apple TV software is at 7.1.  The TV displays the Apple Menu.  The “Settings” does however displays the General menu allowing me to see:
    Apple software:          7.1 (7003)
    Apple TV:                   Model No. A1464, Part No. MD199B/A
    Signal Strength shows 5 circles.
    It does not display the iPad screen but when I use the BT Sport App I can hear the sound but there is no video.  I have searched the internet for a solution to no avail. The problem first arose when the IOS was at 8.1+ but it worked correctly briefly when I updated to IOS 8.2.  Can you help please?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
    Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
    Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
    Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
    Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • Problem with displaying BLOB images on JSP page using a servlet

    hi. I have a big problem with displaying BLOB images using JSP. I have a servlet that connects to the oracle database, gets a BLOB image , reads it, and then displays it using a BinaryStream. The problem is , this works only when i directly call that servlet, that is http://localhost:8080/ImageServlet. It doesn't work when i try to use that servlet to display my image on my JSP page (my JSP page displays only a broken-image icon ) I tried several coding approaches with my servlet (used both Blob and BLOB objects), and they work just fine as long as i display images explicitly using only the servlet.
    Here's what i use : ORACLE 10g XE , Eclipse 3.1.2, Tomcat 5.5.16 , JDK 1.5
    here is one of my image servlet's working versions (the essential part of it) :
                   BLOB blob=null;
              rset=st.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM IMAGES WHERE ID=1");
              while (rset.next())
                   blob=((OracleResultSet)rset).getBLOB(2);
              response.reset();
              response.setContentType("image/jpeg");
              response.addHeader("Content-Disposition","filename=42.jpeg");
                    ServletOutputStream ostr=response.getOutputStream();
                   InputStream istr=blob.getBinaryStream(1L);
                    int size=blob.getBufferSize();
              int len=-1;
                    byte[] buff = new byte[size];
                         while ((len=istr.read( buff ))!=-1 ) {
                   ostr.write(buff,0,len);
             response.flushBuffer();
             ostr.close(); and my JSP page code :
    <img src="/ImageServlet" border="0"  > If you could just tell me what i'm doing wrong here , or if you could show me your own solutions to that problem , i would be very greatful ,cos i'm realy stuck here , and i'm rather pressed for time too. Hope someone can help.

    I turns out that it wasn't that big of a problem after all. All i had to do was to take the above code and place it into another JSP page instead of into a servlet like i did before. Then i just used that page as a source for my IMG tag in my first JSP. It works perfectly well. Why this doesn't work for servlets i still don't know, but it's not a problem form me anymore . Ofcourse if someone knows the answer , go ahead and write. I would still appriceatte it.
    here's the magic tag : <img src="ImageJSP.jsp" border="0"  > enjoy : )

  • Why can''t I use the Servlet class?

    I am trying to build a Servlet by extending HttpServlet. I imported java.io.*, javax.servlet.*, and javax.servlet.http.*. When I compile, it tells me the Servlet packages were not found in import. I am using JDK 1.3. What version do I need to use these packages?

    Ok, and you are sure the name, servlet.jar, is in the classpath, and not just the path to the servlet.jar. E.g.
    mypath/servlet.jar (and not just mypath/).
    It must be a classpath problem if it can't find the package. You could also try to compile your class with the -classpath option:
    java -classpath mypath/servlet.jar *.java
    and see if that helps. Or look inside the servlet.jar to verify that it has the packages you need.

  • Keep getting this error when ever I try to use the CC_2014

    keep getting this error when ever I try to use the CC_2014 InDesign
    Unable to launch Adobe InDesign as you do not have sufficient permissions to access the preferences folders. Ensure that you have appropriate permissions and then restart Adobe InDesign.
    Also have Ai quit out on me in the CC_2014.
    This is very frustration since I use these the most

    For MAC try to give permissions to Adobe Indesign Folder:
    Users/[user]/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign
    Users/[user]/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign
    Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 and later
    For Windows try to give permissions to Adobe Indesign Folder:
    C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign
    C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign
    Also you can try logging in under a local administrator account as suggested by jeff.

  • When do you want to use QT Conversion

    It seems when your exporting video its always recommended not to use QT Conversion, in what case would you need to use it?

    If you are exporting for a DVD you use QT Movie.
    The web cannot normally use DV, HDV or AVCHD so it is usual to use QT Conversion to convert it to an appropriate format and size.
    The only time you need to use "Make movie self-contained" is when you are going to use it on another Mac or you are going to delete the assets (media files).
    When it is not self-contained it is a reference movie, referring to the your project and media files.
    Obviously if you move the project to another computer or delete the files it can no longer refer to them and will not work.

  • Report Builder 3.0.5.8.0 using a servlet

    hi
    I am trying calling the Reports server using a servlet. i need to find if i get a confirmation from the reports server that the report is generated. In which case I would be able to throw the same to the browser.

    Hi!
    1. Make sure no one else has opened the same file.
    2. Dont put image on your report.

  • Chat between j2me clients and using a Servlet server

    Java gurus, please help me..
    I'm wondering if I could set up a sort of chat functionality between two j2me clients. I wish to use Java servlets as my server and Tomcat to deploy it. Is this possible? Can i do these by using http connection only or do i have to use sockets? If i use sockets, how will i configure Tomcat, or do i still need Tomcat?
    Hope someone could help! Thanks in advance! =)

    Basically it means you should have a Thread that loops and make an http request every x seconds. Before sending the request it should check if the user has typed anything, and send that with the request. The server should keep track of all the chat messages sent, and forward to all the other clients when they request an update. To keep track of what clients have received what messages, you could have a time stamp for each message, and a "last update" field for each client.
    The client should run something like this in a thread:
    while (iAmRunning) {
      url = "......." // address of your server
      if (the user typed anything since the last time we sent a request) {
        url = url + "?msg=" + whatTheUserTyped; // maybe another parameter for private messages?
        reset what the user typed (so it won't be sent next time);
      send the request;
      get the response containing what the rest of the users have
        typed since my last update;
      update the display with the latest messages;
    }And the server would handle a request like:
    if (the request contains a message) {
      save the message with the current time;
    check when was the previous update for this user;
    get all messages where the timestamp is later than the last update;
    set the last update field for the user with to the current time;
    respond with all the messages;
