When should a servlet be called?

Hi all,
i have three JSP pages.when should a Servlet be called.what is the interaction between jsp, servlet and data base.please help me with the process flow.its urgent.help me out.thanks in advance.

JSP's should represent the presentation. It should not contain Java code nor scriptlets.
Beans should contain the actual data which is to be transferred between JSP and servlets (business objects / value objects).
Servlets should contain the business logic (the actual Java code) to check/verify values of business objects and call DAO's. Generally here the BO's will also be mapped to DTO's (data transfer objects). Some solutions uses DTO's as BO's, or at least extends them.
DAO's should contain the logic to create/read/update/delete DTO's into/from database.

  • When should we call disconnectIfAlive()

    Hi,
I have a question , when should we call disconnectIfAlive() ?? , if we dont call the method when will the
       connection be freed??.
I have a application in that i will be calling "Execute()" method on the BAPI Model when ever user selects
a item in the dropdownlist ( the selected value will be passed as a parameter to the BAPI), user can select the list multiple times .. so i might be calling the same models "Execute()" many times in the application .
So is it good to call  disconnectIfAlive() after execute every time [ Will the performance be slow as it has to get new connection when we call execute],  or should i just leave it for th DynPro run time to take care abt freeing the connection.
I am considering about the performance if we call disconnectIfAlive after execute , please advice.
    Regards,
    Ravi.

    Hi Ravi,
you have to use the "disconnectIfAlive() " when you will perform "UPDATE" operation using "BAPI".If you don't disconnect the model instance other user will not be able to update the record. Its lock the record until and unless you disconnect the model instance.
    finally
        SaveModel svModel = (SaveModel)WDModelFactory.getModelInstance(SaveModel.class);
       svModel.disconnectIfAlive();

  • Weblogic.utils.NestedRuntimeException when using javax.servlet.Filter

    IDE: JDev 10gR3.4 & JDev 11gR2.3
    ViewController technology: JSF/ADF Faces
    Example code flow:
    Run page2.jsf
MyFilter intercepts request, checks for parameter on session.
If parameter not null, goto page2.jsf
    Else redirect to page1.jsf
page1.jsf has a button that sets the value on the session scope after clicking.
In jdev 11gR2.3, I get an weblogic.utils.NestedRuntimeException after clicking the button on page1.jsf. This error does not occur in jdev 10gR3.5. Although the application continues to execute and proper info is displayed, I’m wondering why this occurs and also if I should be concerned. Has anyone experienced a similar issue when using javax.servlet.Filter in 11g?
    MyFilter code snipet:

I dont believe that solution pertains to my case. clicked() is invoked from standard jsf page and the adf controller is not acquired yet. i put a couple of print statements in the filter and it seems that the doFilter is called twice! This is not the case when running in 10g.

  • When should i suppose to invoke the System.gc() method?

As knew from the Java specifications, the method of System.gc() is used to reclaim space from all discarded objects. But when should I call it explicitly? Should I included it at the end of my methods? My destroy() segment with my servlet? Please advise.
    Thanks for your replies!

Invoking System.gc() will instruct the garbage collector to run. However, you cannot control precisely when it runs, that's up to the VM to decide. If code is well written, and includes appropriate finalize() methods to dereference no longer needed objects, then the default garbage collection should be quite sufficient. Basically, until you get to very advanced Java projects, you should never have to explicitly invoke System.gc().

When I get a phone call , then want to save the message, no keyboard comes up to type the name.  How do I fix that?

You can open the Phone app then tap Recents then the blue 'i" in a blue circle at the right of the number then "Create New Contact" then tap a field such as "First" name and the keyboard should appear.

  • When should be package invalidated?

    Hello guys,
I would need again some help...
My question is: When exactly should be package invalidated?
    Consider following situation:
We have two packages, one contains constants (in its specification), the other is reading these constants. Package is reading these constants in package body and package spec as well. Now, when I add a new constant to the first package and recompile it, should this invalidate the other package??? The new added constant is not used in the other package.
In reality, we have a Constant package, containing all constants in its specification. One package (test_pkg) is reading some constant let say form line 100. Now we add new constant let say to line 50. When we recompile the constant package, planty of packages get invalidated because they are reading from it. We recompile all invalid packages. However test_pkg is not invalidated!!! Now if we run the code from test_pkg, it is still reading the constant from line 100, so it is reading it from wrong place and the constant has wrong value! The only thing what help is to recompile the test_pkg.
So it looks like the reference to Constant package wasn't updated.
    Why isn't test_pkg invalidated???

From my standard library of responses...
Packages tend to fail because of their "package state". A package has a "state" when it contains package level variables/constants etc. and the package is called. Upon first calling the package, the "state" is created in memory to hold the values of those variables etc. If an object that the package depends upon e.g. a table is altered in some way e.g. dropped and recreated, then because of the database dependencies, the package takes on an INVALID status. When you next make a call to the package, Oracle looks at the status and sees that it is invalid, then determines that the package has a "state". Because something has altered that the package depended upon, the state is taken as being out of date and is discarded, thus causing the "Package state has been discarded" error message.
If a package does not have package level variables etc. i.e. the "state" then, taking the same example above, the package takes on an INVALID status, but when you next make a call to the package, Oracle sees it as Invalid, but knows that there is no "state" attached to it, and so is able to recompile the package automatically and then carry on execution without causing any error messages. The only exception here is if the thing that the package was dependant on has changes in such a way that the package cannot compile, in which case you'll get an Invalid package type of error.
And if you want to know how to prevent discarded package states....
Move all constants and variables into a stand-alone package spec and reference those from your initial package. Thus when the status of your original package is invlidated for whatever reason, it has no package state and can be recompiled automatically, however the package containing the vars/const will not become invalidated as it has no dependencies, so the state that is in memory for that package will remain and can continue to be used.
As for having package level cursors, you'll need to make these local to the procedures/functions using them as you won't be able to reference cursors across packages like that (not sure about using REF CURSORS though.... there's one for me to investigate!)
This first example shows the package state being invalided by the addition of a new column on the table, and causing it to give a "Package state discarded" error...

    HI
Please refer the note no :  1567443
Manual Control in J1INCHLN to change currency key/doc type
"After this, if you will run J1INCHLN, you will get a checkbox at the end
with 'Error Control Mode' which will be selected by default. If you want
to change document type, currency or rate during processing, you should
uncheck it else it will take you to the last screen."
I hope note is allready available in your system hence you are getting above cheeck box.
If you want to change the document type and currency or rate during posting then you need use the check box.

  • When to use servlets / when applets

    hi there,
building a web application when do I use servlet technology and when applets? What are the arguments to let me choose between them? Or combine both servlets and applets? Any ideas/URLs are welcome.
    greetings

is it a matter how powerful my servermachine is?
No, not really, but an applet will use the processor on the client and the servlet will use the server's cpu, so that could potentially be an issue for you.
or a matter of security or whatever?
There are security issues with Applets, as they cannot access system resources, but neither can Servlets, so I think that's a non issue.
What exactly do you need to do with the data once you get it out of the database? THAT is the real question! If you want to fetch data and then display the data as text or HTML in a browser, use a servlet. If you need the client to interact with the data in a more sophisticated way, use an Applet. With an Applet, you can put buttons and sliders and whatever and control things, and interact with the application. But a Servlet is not an application, nor is it interactive. A Servlet is called, it gets parameters from an HTTP client, and then it responds, and it's done. An Applet has runtime, and stays running, to interact with the client indefinitely.
I'll give you a real world example. With a Servlet, you might output a web page to a browser, and show an advertisement somewhere on the page. However, an Applet could show an advertisement, and update that ad every few seconds or so, and show one after another, like a slideshow. Even better, an Applet could go get a BRAND NEW ad that was just put in the database and get the new ad at runtime, showing up to the minute results. An Applet could do a stock ticker program, Servlet cannot. Get the difference?

Settings you make in ACR for a Raw file are written to the separate XMP side car file. (The Camera Raw preferences has this set by default and to my opinion it should stay so, but the other option is to save them in a central database)
However, opening the same file in ACR and make new adjustments the previous settings are overwritten by the new ones. You can save them separately but that would be a hell of a job. If you want to be on the safe side you should make a proper back up of the whole folder (be sure to have the XMP files included, by default those are hidden files in Bridge) before someone else starts playing with the settings. However, you can always go back to the default version using the option in the little menu icon next to the name op f the panel (first panel is Basic). click on the icon and from the provided menu choose 'Reset Camera Raw Defaults' to go back to the originals.
I don't use jpeg in ACR very often but I believe ACR settings for jpeg and tiff are written in the XMP data in the file itself instead of a separate XMP file. You can revert to default or make new settings that also overwrite the older settings.
Making adjustments in ACR shows the results in Bridge (it uses the XMP data for the preview) but to make it visible in other apps you also have to save them in Photoshop itself to make the changes persistent so that mail and print reflect your settings.
So basically, let her play with the files and either chose the option to save the files (bottom left in ACR Window and choose the wanted provided options or open and save them in Photoshop to get the proper result. And if you want to be on the safe side let here use her own copies and keep the originals to your self.

When I start a phone call, nobody can hear my voice and viceversa. Only when I click on speaker , voice can be heard at both ends.

Why do you & we accept a phone that does not work 100%
We should be discounted the non working percentage, or simply get a new working one.
Would you accept a saucage with a rotten end, and hope they would treat it with enough chenichals to make it taste and look good?
The problem seems to me a hardware problem, and may be poor assembly. Noticed that incoming calls on my first 4s when vibrator was on, made an extra vibrating noise - i.e. loose speaker, printboard or what do I know.
This does not occur on the phone I purchased yesterday, waiting for the other at the repairshop.
Does Telenor and Apple think I will accept the repaired brand new phone?
    NOT!

    just crossing my finger.
    my blackberry is...
    Curve 9360
    3G wifi
    7.1 Bundle 2102 ( v 7.1.0.746  Platform 9.6.0.112)
Hope it is enough info on my cellphone.
Everytime I make a phone call or use the internet, it shuts down immediately. when I received the phone call as well.
and I need to charge it first and then I can turn on again.
It is not buttery consumption since the buttery sign shows almost full when I turn on again.
I would like to fix and use this phone at least another year. It has been 2 and half years. should work properly more!
    Thank you in advance!

Hi everyone who gave me solutions,
I appreciate all of your help and Im so sorry for late update.
I tried them, but did not work unfortunately. so I bought a new battery for $9 and now it's working very well like a new phone.
I will try to charge battery when it's almost gone.(not all the time) and try not to use phone while it's charging.
I believe that it lengthens cell/battery life.
Thank you again for your help.

    Hi kajbj,
Java guys are mostly using TOMCAT,so for me it seems to be the best place. That's not correct. Most people who are writing stuff for the web might be using Tomcat, but there are lots and lots of Java applications that aren't for the web.
Is there any other reason behind your question.Yes, this forum is named "New to Java" and Tomcat questions shouldn't be asked here, even if people knows the answer to you question. You will probably get better and more detailed answers in a Tomcat forum. All othe guys there are actually using Tomcat, and they know the small differences between the different versions, and how they behave on different operating systems. They do also know if you need to make configurations changes, and where you should make them.
So in future, please ask questions in a forum that is specific to the product that you are using.
