When using GPIB hardware, do I need the exact driver[HP-3478a] or can I use simple raw GPIB-read or 488.2-read commands to take measurements?

GPIB and 488.2 are the same thing, so the question if kind of moot. If you have a driver for the instrument then that's the best place to start, as it's quite likely to have been debugged and worked out. You can, however, code up your own communication. You would want to use VISA rather than the lower-level 488.2 commands, as this is the preferred API for programming. VISA is just a layer that sits on top of GPIB and allows you to write code so that you can communicate with a device via a serial or GPIB interface.
You should take a look at the examples that ship with LabVIEW as there's a couple that do basic communication using VISA functions.

You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod.Sounds like your iPod is broken. Take it to Apple or someone else who repairs iPods and see if you can get it fixed, or get it replaced.

Can't load Google Calendar. I'm getting this message: "Firefox prevented this page from automatically redirecting to another page" but unchecking the box for "Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page" has not helped. I'm using Firefox 3.6.3 on Mac OS 10.6.3. It's not reported as a generalised problem in Dashboard. Google Calendar opens and works fine on my 12" PowerBook G4, but this is a recent problem on my G5 13" MacBook Pro. Mayday!

There may be a problem with one of the files that stores details of installed extensions. Try deleting these files as shown in the "Corrupt extension files" section of this link - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
Though that article is not specifically about your problem, the method shown in the corrupt extension files section may help. When you restart Firefox after deleting those files, the list of installed extensions is rebuilt and this will hopefully fix your problem. -

The type of form yo're describing is possible if you create it in LiveCycle Designer. It may also be possible in Acrobat, but there are certain restrictions. The type of form is known as a dynamic XFA form. LiveCycle Designer is not available on the Mac, so you'd have to install the software on a Windows machine and learn how to create this type of form. The LiveCycle Designer forum here is a good resource for getting more help.
Reader 11 now supports creating new pages using templates with a form that you create in Acrobat (Acroform). This requires some JavaScript programming. It also adds support for using a button to display a page from a PDF, which can be an image or anything else a PDF can be. So the user would click a button, be prompted to import a page from an existing PDF, and the button (or a different button) displays it as its icon. This would require the user to convert the image to PDF first, which is relatively easy these days (e.g., using Preview on the Mac, or Word on Mac/Windows). This too involves a bit of JavaScript programming, but it's very simple and straightforward.
