WHERE Ask Beginners' Questions???

Obviously this isn't the forum for having beginner's questions answered. I've asked two and nobody responded. Is there a list where newbies can get help?
beno

This forum is just fine for any level of questions.
1) Your first question received an answer but you apparently couldn't follow it.  Though using f8 wasn't mentioned, the only place you might use Ctrl-F8 in those instructions would be the first step, though there are a couple of ways to create a new mc.  All of the steps are fairly clear to follow, so if you do not understand one of them, just ask (and be patient).

  • Where is help link on 'How to ask a question' ?

    Using Thunderbird.
Tried to see where the Help > Help contents link opens.
Unfortunately, it does not open on the expected webpage with the immediate help link on 'How to ask a question'.
the link would then take the user to getsatisfaction/mozilla_messaging website.
I use the link to instruct Thunderbird users on what to include when asking a question.
Where is the page that contains this vital information?

    Sorry Diego.
Initially, i was just trying to see what on earth was going on with this website, as it was not behaving as expected.
Obviously, it has been significantly updated.
So I possed a question to see if I would be redirected to the getsatisfaction/mozilla_messaging website.
    Obviously no.
Then I discovered that it is impossible to retract /delete an asked question.
Not helpful, I can only edit the question, so I have edited the question.
If you know the link where I can tell people to read when they want to know what details need to be included, then I would be most grateful.
The information will tell people what to include when answering a question:
    this was the link:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/thunderbird#w_how-to-ask-your-question
there is no information on that page with regard to ' how to ask your question' so where has it gone?
It instructes precisely what to include
    Help > Troubleshooting Information

  • Hi everyone, not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question, however any redirect is appreciated. Where can I get the download for the latest old mozilla browser. The one with the dinosaur icon before the browser turned firefox. Thanks, Jen

    Hi everyone
Not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question, however any redirect is appreciated. Where can I get the download for the latest old mozilla browser. The one with the dinosaur icon before the browser turned firefox. Thanks, Jen

Phoenix and Firebird were what Firefox was called before Firefox was settled on in 2004, and both used "birds" as the logo. IIRC, the dinosaur was used in the Mozilla Suite.
Here are the earliest versions of the Mozilla Suite. <br />

I hope this request for a historical purposes of where Mozilla came from, because those old versions aren't safe to use on the internet any longer.

  • Audio - streaming I have a problem and don't know where to ask the question

I have a MacBook pro, I also have a presonus 16.4.2 FireWire mixing consule.  My band is going to play a online show that will stream through ustream.tv .  When I am connected to the mixer via FireWire the board is recieving audio and on ustreams web ap it shows a place where I can select the presonus for audio but when I select it it does not show any audio input.  Does anyone know how to make it work so I can use the sound coming from the mixer as the sound being broadcast for the stream?  I've never tried using the 8th inch audio input on the Mac but do you think taking two mono quarter inches from the main of the mixer into a stereo 8th inch would work?  Any help is appreciated, the show is this Thursday and I'd like to make it sound as good as possible and avoid having to use the internal microphone.  Or if any of you know a better forum to ask this question please direct me.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

This will work to get the audio into the console, go to system preferences and set input to line and use the slider for level control.
If you go to the Apple site, support and search "streaming audio" there is a number of articles that might help.
Also, if you search" audio streaming firewire"
    Too much to list here.

  • Where to ask conversion question

I want to ask a question about PAL to NTSC conversion. What's the right forum for that? Is there one? Should I ask here?,
    Ross

    My recommendation -
Using MPEG Streamclip, convert the PAL DVD to QuickTime/Apple DV PAL.
In FCE, change your Easy Setup to DV PAL; create a new sequence; import the QuickTime/Apple DV PAL file you exported from MPEG Streamclip.  Do your editing (if any).  Export to QuickTime Movie. Non-self contained is fine.
In iDVD, set your Projects > Video Mode preference to NTSC, with encoding =  High Quality or Professional Quality.  Import the QT Movie that you exported from FCE.  Create whatever menus you want.  Burn your DVD.  You will get an NTSC DVD that will play just fine in most USA DVD players.  I have done this and think the resulting quality is pretty good.
iDVD has the capability to convert PAL>NTSC and NTSC>PAL.  I have experimented with this and think the quality is quite good.
There are more complex ways to convert between PAL and NTSC.  JES Deinterlacer has the capability but I think other methods produce better results.  The iDVD method is basically free.  The only better alternative that I have experience with is Graeme Nattress' Standards Conversion, which works really well but it costs $100 and because it was designed for FCPro, it requires some workarounds to use in FCE.

  • Where do I ask a question about frequent blue screen crashes?

My Windows 7 32bit PC frequently crashes (blue or black screen, approx 3 times per day).  Last time it happened I checked the Event Viewer and there were 10 error events, ID 7010, 3058, 3028, 3029, 9002, 7042, 7040, 9000 and 455.  I don't know
what any of that means but could this be the cause of the crashes?  And can it be rectified?

  • How to effectively ask a question on this forum

Ok, so this'll take a little explaining. I was kinda bored over my lunch break, so i decided I'd write a general reference for how to post well on this forum. I realize that many people aren't gonna read this the first time they post, but i thought it would be a good thing to reference when replying to people who post a poor question.
_10 Ways to Post a Good Question on this Forum_
_1) Write a descriptive subject line_
This is the first thing that people see, and it influences how they read a question. Subjects like "Java error" tell people nothing about your problem. Subjects like "How to implement a SAX parser for use in multiple classes" are infinitely more useful.
_2) Don't use phrases such as URGENT or HELP ME!!! or IT'S DUE IN AN HOUR!!!!_
The people on this forum don't have the same priorities as you, and therefore don't care if your problem is urgent. In fact, they find it rude to assert that your problem should be solved before somebody else's just because you procrastinated. They also don't pleas for help too fondly. Typically posters who write this sort of phrase in their post has given up and become helpless, making it very difficult to guide them to the answer. Also, keep the caps lock off. THERE IS NOTHING MORE ANNOYING THAN ALL-CAPS POSTS. IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE YELLING, and people will make you aware of how it annoys them.
_3) Dont post your homework assignments asking for "teh codez"_
You will get flamed like none other for this sort of question. You may get codes, but when you submit them to your instructor, you may get suspended or expelled (depending on your school's cheating policy). The people on this forum are more advanced than you in Java, and can make it painfully obvious to your instructor that you cheated.
    _4) Write in normal English_
Think of this forum as your supervisor or instructor, you want to sound professional and convey your question effectively. SMS speak or any other sort of abbreviation of the English language becomes difficult to read, and many people on this forum won't even try. This forum is filled with professionals in the Java world, and they are accustomed to reading true English (full sentences).
    _5) Don't be helpless_
This forum is here mainly to help with specific problems, not to teach you Java. If you don't know where to start, a person is most likely going to tell you to write the solution out on paper first, breaking it down into small steps that can be accomplished by the computer.
    _6) Do your research_
Many of the questions posted can be solved with a quick Google search. You should check a few places before you even post a question. They include: this forum (do a forum search), Google (do a Google search), the API's (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/), and the Java Tutorials(http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/)
_7) Post code and errors with your question_
The answer to your problem is in the error messages and the code. Instead of asking a general question about for loops, post the code that you have written and the error info that you get. When asking a question it is IMPERATIVE that you have tried to do it your own way, because the people on the forum mostly won't do it for you, they'll only point out where you have done it wrong and try to help you fix it. Don't paraphrase your error messages, because there are subtleties in the actual messages that you may unknowingly edit out.
    _8) Don't Multi-post_
It is rude to post the same question multiple times or in multiple places in the this forum. This is for the same reason as #2, it makes it seem that you think your problem is more urgent or important than others' problems.
    _9) Don't resurrect dead threads_
If a thread is 3 years old, nobody is going to remember it, so make a new thread to ask your question. If you have a question about something in the old thread, reference it through a hyperlink.
    _10) Take it easy_
As long as the people in the forum see that you're legitimately trying to help yourself, they'll help you as much as they see fit. The biggest problem that newbies have is they rely on the forum to spoonfeed them the info, and it's not going to happen. They'll either get flamed or ignored. The people on the forum aren't trying to find "fresh meat to flame", they legitimately want to help you, and they'll typically give you fair warning if you're doing something annoying or unorthodox.

There does seem to be a way to sticky posts, but I think only mods and admins have the power to do it. There's one over on the Generics forum : http://forum.java.sun.com/forum.jspa?forumID=316
I've been trying to add a pseudo-signature to my posts as far as possible, with a link to a page which pretty much covers this stuff, only it's on JavaRanch:
People on the forum help others voluntarily, it's not their job.
    Help them help you.
Learn how to ask questions first: http://faq.javaranch.com/java/HowToAskQuestionsOnJavaRanch
But I've had a couple of occasions where the OPs thought it was directed at them and they got a tad upset :)
And without hyperlinks, I'm not quite sure how many people actually take the pains to go to that page.
Ah well, no one can say I didn't try.

  • Ask your question.APPLE WEB SITE IS SLOW

I'm on apple support page,I ask a question,10sec later the page comes up. I click on a question and 5 sec later the tiny circular spins letting me know it's looking for the page and then 5 sec later the page opens. Anything and every thing I do the apple web site takes about 10sec or longer every time I click go.
A lot of times if I click twice and some times just once I get a pop up telling me Apple is not responding.
I thought it was verizon service but I just got charter and it's the same way. Any Ideas??
I just went down this page to find out where the best place on apple is to put my question and I clicked the box WiFi and 5 sec later the check mark showed up.

I actualy had Verizon shut off and removed there security from my p/c and I'm in awe. My p/c is fast and I no longer have trouble with turning pages. I was wrong about charter.com it's who I have now and I'm not haveing trouble with slow int and clicking on the next web page is fast.
At first it was the same thing w/charter but I still had verizon. I wanted to see if charter was better before I got rid of Verizon but I got speed only after I called Verizon and had them shut me off and then I got rid of there security.
    I HOPE THIS HELPS.

  • Hello , I want to ask some question about ipads \  How powerful is the iPad?  How useful is it for reading books, newspaper or magazines or for surfing the web? Can you identify any shortcomings of the device?   please help me :(

    Hello ,
I want to ask some question about ipads \
    How powerful is the iPad?
How useful is it for reading books, newspaper or magazines or for surfing the web?
Can you identify any shortcomings of the device?
    please help me

it's less powerful than your average computer. THink of it like a netbook but with a better processor.
It'll do fine for surfing (although if you browse a lot of flash based sites you will need to get a third party browser since safari doesn't accommodate it)
You may do OK on reading books, papers or magazines, especially if they have apps, but the ipad's screen is backlit, so it doesn't work well outdoors and you may need to fiddle with the brightness so that you don't get eye strain (it's just like doing too much reading from a computer screen)
I would say the biggest short comings are data transfer. Apple's preferred work flow is that everything is done via iTunes or the internet....well people dont' always have 100% reliable always on internet access so you can find yourself in a situation where you can't get things on/off the iPad.
By and large, it's a good device for day to day stuff, but is not a computer replacement.

  • Why couldn't I ask a question in a Forum?

I tried to ask a question in the Photoshop CS6 Forum.  I think it's a general question.  But I then got a message that I'm not authorized to post a question there.  Why?

Idea 1:+ Use a warning rule like:
Warning("You've stated that your age is under 18.  If this is correct, press the Submit button.") if
    the applicant's age < 18
This will cause a warning message to appear on the screen, but (unlike an error event) it will allow the user to continue the interview.
Idea 2:+ Create a second age attribute. If the value of the first age attribute is under 18, ask the second. Of course, this creates a risk of having inconsistent data (like your scenario 2), so you would need additional rules to resolve the inconsistency.
I'd go with the first approach, personally.

  • Ask a question about GUP

recently i designed a voice over ip , about 40 GW, 2 GK,all are 26 routers, i want to implement GK redundancy, i can use alternate method to config GK, but i want to use Cluster using GUP protocol, but we haven't used GUP before. i asked many person, they don't use yet.
i want to ask a question
are there any successful H.323 network using GUP.
and how about it, reliable or smooth,
    thanks!
    jack

    GUP provides the following benefits:
    1) Sharing the load across several GKs
    2) Any single GK in the cluster can resolve an address for another member in the cluster
    3) You can cluster up to 5 GKs in a cluster to address redundancy and scaling requirements
GUP is not suitable in an environment where a large number of endpoints are registered.

  • Asking a question twice owing to a business rule

    Hi All,
I have a requirement where I have to ask for the new value of a Number attribute in the same interview as soon I have already answered it depending on a business rule.
    e.g. consider the following
The application form is complete if
    The applicant's age is known
{The applicant's age is a Number}*(but a hypothetical business rule is: if the age is under 18, ask the question again)*
    i.e.
    Interview 1:
    What is applicant age: *20*
The application form is completeInterview 2:
    What is applicant age: *15*
    What is applicant age: *13*
The application form is completeInterview 3:
    What is applicant age: *12*
    What is applicant age: *12*
The application form is completeIs there a suitable workaround.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

Warning("You've stated that your age is under 18.  If this is correct, press the Submit button.") if
