Where do ditto'd files go if target disk is missing?

Hi folks,
I've got a series of scripts on a server which do nightly/weekly/monthly backups to an external firewire drive using ditto:
ditto -rsrc /path/to/original /path/to/target
I had to remove the target disk for a while, and didn't bother to turn off the backup script. I'm pretty sure that the reason that my hard drive was filling up rather quickly was that ditto was storing the stuff in some temp files somewhere. One reason I suspect this is that when I cloned the drive, huge amounts of space - hundreds of gigs - were "miraculously" recovered, yet everything continues to function as before. And when I disconnected the external again with the new larger drive running, the usual daily backup amount (about 20 gigs) again 'disappeared'.
So, my question: Where might those phantom files be? I'd prefer to get rid of them manually without having to clone the drive if I ever forget to turn off the backup script again when the external is removed.

So if I just delete the original entry for that hard drive, that'll do it right?
If you mean can you delete the "false copy" - a large item in /Volumes on your source volume which is not an alias and has a name like your target - then yes.
When I reconnect my external, I'll be able to return the script paths to the originals too, I suspect.
As long as your external wasn't really re-named - you'll have to see.
re saving space by cloning-
Since I was cloning the actual drive's contents instead of a false volume as explained above, it does make some sense.
The actual drive DID contain the extraneous files - if you check with Disk Inventory X you will probably see a big /Volumes folder. I think the reason the space got reclaimed is that Carbon Copy Cloner is "smart" enough not to copy those files on the source that are not needed on the clone because they will get re-created there anyway. If you look at CCC's "Incremental backup" mode with "everything" selected to be copied, /Volumes is not on the list.
Mike Bombich has a page [here|http://www.bombich.com/mactips/image.html] for guidance to those who want to clone manually rather than use CCC. That page contains the following:
Some directories are populated by the System. For example, the Volumes directory is populated with directories corresponding to the names of Volumes you have on your system. If you insert a Zip disk, a new directory in /Volumes is created with the name of the Zip disk. These directories are called "mountpoints", and are created "on-the-fly" by Apple's autodiskmount utility. Because these directories do not contain data on your boot volume, they do not need to be copied during a clone operation. The Volumes directory is just a placeholder (and the OS will recreate the Volumes directory on bootup, so it is unnecessary to recreate).
Since the /Volumes directory in your case does mistakenly contain "real" files, not copying this directory onto the clone would "recover" the lost space.
Next question, though, is why not also use CCC for your scheduled backups instead of your ditto scripts? You can choose which files you want to copy. I don't think CCC will execute a scheduled copy session if the target is not connected (I'm not sure of this), and it's current copy engine is said to be better than ditto in preserving metadata.

  • Restoring my mac book pro after copying the files off via target disk

Hi guys any help would be great.
I had a problem with my hard drive in my early MBP, after seeing an apple genius, who said it was mostly likely a software issue and wiping the disk and reinstalling everything shoudl fix it.
So as i didnt have an up to date time machine back up, i used the target disk utility to copy the files from the drive over onto another mac (actualy on a networked harddrive)
no i have completed a wipe, and reinstalled the operating system (snow leapeard as thats the last disc i had - MBP was on Lion prior to the issues)
now i want to restore all my files from before.
what is the best way to do this?
can i just drag and drop each file from the networked hard drive back into the coresponding ones on my MBP?
    thanks

Only your users files inside music, pictures, movies documents etc folders.
Nothing in Library, nor Applcations, you do that you hose the account and the apps won't work anyway, at least most of them.
or i will have to reinstall the aplications but i tunes and so on will be able to find the files?
yes and reinport music into iTunes so it goes into the new itunes library file, ditto with iPhoto Library (old) righ click and "show package contents" and import the Originals folder contents into new iPhoto library.
support files have paths in their files that go to the path on the origanl system, you changed that so the paths are off, so you import the original files again.

  • Where are the "backups"-files listed in the disk utility program come from?

    Hi community,
I recently tried to "tidy up" my macbook air and wondered why there is so much HD-space occupied by "backups". My disk utility program shows almost 15 GB of "backups", although I use a USB-HD for time machine backup (which works fine). Where do these files come from? Do I need them? How to delete them?
    Thanks for helping!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Lion and Mountain Lion create local snapshots on MacBooks, MacBooks Air and MacBooks Pro with Time Machine activated > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
Time Machine will delete them automatically when the hard drive gets full, so you should leave this as it is. If you want, you can turn them off or delete them, but you don't need this. Also, some tasks may turn them on

  • What is the set-up when transfer files through target disk mode

I'm a bit confused on how to set up the macs to do a file transer in target disk mode.  I am transferring files from an imac to a macbook pro.  I have the cable 6pin to 9pin.  Now what I can't remember (apple.com instructions is what confused me) is on which computer do I hold down the  'T' on start up?  Is it the computer I am transferring the files to? ( in this case the macbook pro).  I use to do this fairly often, but not recently, and I have forgotten.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Transferring files between two computers using FireWire - Apple

  • Is it possible to store a back up on external HD by transfering files using Target Disk Mode?

    Dear Apple community,
There's absolutely no way that I'm going to be able to fix my MBP without a clean install. I simply cannot log in and get to my desktop screen after upgrading to Mavericks. So I will have to erase everything and perform a clean install. However, before proceeding with this plan, I'll have to back up my files from my MPB since I cannot use my mac normally, I'll have to back up my files using the Target Disk Mode. I've connected my MPB to another MPB in the past, so I know how the process work. But this time around I won't be able to use another MBP but a MB. I have a few doubts regarding the process especially in what concernd adding an external HD to this equation. So please bear with me and see if you can answer my doubts.
So this is the equipment I'll be working with: my MPB, my friends MacBook (2008) and my 1TB external hard drive.
My basic question is: once I connect my MPB in Target Disk Mode to the MB, I'm sure I'd be able to transfer my files to this MB. But let's say that I don't want to leave my files in this MB (after all it's not my computer) and want to send my files straight to an external HD connected to this MB. Is it possible?  If positive, I know that the only FireWire port in the MB is a 400 port. That means my MBP will be connect to the MB using the only FireWire port available in the MB. So I believe that my external HD would have to be connected to the MB with the help of an USB cable. I assume that this will make the transferring process a little slower than if I could count solely on FireWire ports. Slowing the process down is not a problem but could this corrupt any of my files during the transferring process or even damage anything? I assume that would never happen after all it's just digital data, but better safe than sorry, right? What do you think?
Another thought that occurred to me is: let's say I connect my MBP to the MB using the FireWire 400. I'd still have an FireWire 800 port available on my MBP. If I connect my external HD to my MBP (yeah, the one that will be in Target Disk Mode) using that FW 800 port, would my MBP allow this external HD to mount as if it was just another folder/drive in my computer? If positive, theoretically I'd be able to transfer files from my MBP to my external HD manually (by dragging files from folder to folders), right?
I really don't want to transfer my files from the MBP to the MB and then from MB to external HD. That would just take time and I really don't know how much available space I'll find on my friend's MB.
Oh, one last question: when transferring files using Target Disk Mode, do all computers involved in this process gotta have the same OS X version installed or it doesn't matter if e.g one is running Snow Leopard and the other Mavericks?
Looking forward to hear back from you, experts.

  • Dreamweaver & Microsoft Office cannot open files on target disk

I've set up my Macbook in Target Disk Mode and connect it via Thunderbolt cable to my iMac. (I'm trying to use the Macbook as a storage drive so I can use the iMac's screen, keyboard & mouse but not use up the hard drive space.) I'm able to access folders and files on the target disk (Macbook) from my iMac when programs like Keynote or Pages try opening them, but for some reason when I try to open the same files using Dreamweaver, Excel, Word and PowerPoint, I get messages like:
"PowerPoint cannot open the file /Volumes/Macintosh HD 1/Users/[file path]...The file may be corrupt, in use, not a type recognized by PowerPoint, or the file extension may not match the internal format of the file."
    Or:
"Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example, \/)."
Please keep in mind the files I am trying to open are .html, .doc, .docx, .pptx, .xlsx files, etc. So they should be opening easily with Dreamweaver & MS Office. Also, when I copy the files I want to open from the target disk and paste them onto my iMac, I am able to easily open them with Dreamweaver & MS Office. It's only when I try opening them directly from the target disk that I run into issues.
One more thing adding to my confusion is that when I use a Windows VM via Citrix Receiver to access my files on the target disk, I'm able to save & edit the target disk files with no problem.
Any idea what could be happening to cause this? Here are the specs of my machines below:
    iMac specs:
    OS X v10.9.4
Processor: 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    MS Office 2011 v14.4.3
    Dreamweaver CS6 v12.0
    Macbook specs:
    OS X v10.9.4
Processor: 2.8 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16GB 1600 MHz DDR 3
    Thanks!

I believe I've solved this problem. It looks like even though a 1 was being added to the target disk's name (Macintosh HD 1), my iMac ignored it and looked for the files I was trying to open on its own hard drive. I changed the name of my target disk to "Macbook Macintosh HD 1" and I can now open my files.

  • Macbook in target disk mode locks up when trying to transfer files to another computer. Suggestions?

A week ago I installed snow leopard on my girlfriend's macbook without backing anything up. Dumb idea I know. The installation failed multiple times. I ran her computer in target disc mode to try to save what files I could. Now when I try to transfer files it will freeze up at different times. Sometimes I can transfer a huge amount of data like 4GB's and the other times it locks up trying to transfer 4kB's. I'm at my wits end trying to figure this out. I can see the files but can not transfer them.
Any suggestions or past similar past experiences?

    Hi Anand,
Have you noticed when you plug the drive in whether its making any sounds? You can put your ear up to the drive on the Macbook. Its located on the right hand front sided of the top case.
Also, check to see if the target disk mode icon is moving after a few minutes. If the firewire icon has stopped moving it usually indicates that theres something seriously wrong (probably mechanical) with the drive.
Id definitely give Disk Warrior a try. Especially if you have a situation where you can hear the drive running or spin up but it doesn't make any sound after that. Hope this helps.

Where do the MEDIA FILES live after I import them from camera to iMovie (Mac Mini OS X 10.9.2)?  I need to MOVE MEDIA FILES to external hard drive.

    Hello bbryson68,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand you're wanting to move iMovie project and event data to another drive.  I found the following information in the iMovie help that answers your question.
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or storage devices
Connect a storage device that contains the target library to your Mac, or copy the target library to your Mac.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries, locate an existing library on your Mac, or create a new library. The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Tip:  To select multiple clips or projects in the same library, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
    Work with multiple libraries

  • How do I consolidate in FDM AFTER all files load to target?

    Hi,
We are using FDM to import and export out to HFM forecasting data. The files are sent via ETL to the OpenBatch folder and then I am using parallel processing to import, validate, and consolidate the files to the target system, which is HFM. The problem is the performance. As each file is loaded using the batch loader script, it loads and consolidates each file as each file processes. I would like to find a way to load and export all files FIRST to HFM - and then when the last file is encountered (the 12th file), I would like to run a consolidate on the file to HFM so that the consolidation will consolidate all at once and help save some time. Here are the steps I would like to accomplish:
    1. Import, Validate, and Export the first 11 files to HFM
    2. Import, Validate, Export, and Consolidate the 12th file to HFM - the idea is that all previous 11 files will consolidate atone time instead of the out of the box way using the standard BatchLoader script.
Does anyone know HOW I can make this happen? Out of the box this is not possible without some major script customization. Could someone please give me some sort of idea where I can make this happen? I really appreciate the help. Below is the standard Batch Loader script I am using and I would like to somehow customize:
    Sub webBatchStdParallel()
    'Oracle Hyperion FDM CUSTOM Script:
    'Parallel Processing
    'STANDARD Batch Parallel Processing
    'Declare Local Variables
    Dim lngProcessLevel
    Dim strDelimiter
    Dim blnAutoMapCorrect
    Dim lngParallelProcessCount
    Dim strLoadBalanceServerName
    Dim BATCHENG
    Set BATCHENG = CreateObject("upsWBatchLoaderDM.clsBatchLoader")
    BATCHENG.mInitialize API, SCRIPTENG
    'Initialize variables Variables
    lngProcessLevel = 10                     'Up-To-Consolidate
strDelimiter = "_"                         'File Name Delimiter
blnAutoMapCorrect = True                    'Auto Map Correction is On
lngParallelProcessCount = 2                    'Number of Parallel Processes (Should equal # of Processors)
strLoadBalanceServerName = "Everest0555"     'Load balance server for parallel process
    'Create the file collection
    Set BATCHENG.PcolFiles = BATCHENG.fFileCollectionCreate(CStr(strDelimiter))
    'Execute a Standard Parallel batch
    BATCHENG.mFileCollectionProcessParallel BATCHENG.PcolFiles, CLng(lngProcessLevel), CLng(lngParallelProcessCount), CStr(strLoadBalanceServerName), , CBool(blnAutoMapCorrect)
    End Sub

    Hi,
Thanks for all the input so far, I really appreciate it. I have made a lot of progress and added code to the batch loader script.
Again, What I am trying to do is load 12 forecasting files (Periodic) for each month through FDM and then load to HFM. After the load, I want to kick off the consolidation process to the target system (HFM) AFTER the data has been loaded through FDM to help speed up time by running the consolidation all at once in HFM instead of by each file one by one in FDM. Here is some more info:
    1. I have 12 files loaded to the OpenBatch Folder - Each file is a monthly file.
    2. The 12 files (Starting from November 2010 - Oct 2011) are exported and loaded to HFM. No consolidation takes place.
    3. I want to add a procedure AFTER the load to run consolidation on the last file loaded (Oct. 2011) in HFM so the consolidation will kick off in HFM and consolidate the remaining months in HFM instead of in FDM. I tested manually and the time is increased 10-fold.
    4. I have potentially identified the "ActConsolidate" Method could be used to run the consolidation in the target system. In my code you can see that I have added the ActConsolidate call AFTER the batch load. I was hoping this would run the consolidation directly in HFM by calling the consolidation in HFM. However, when I run the script I keep getting the following error:
"91 - Object variable or With block variable not set At Line: 52" Apparently I am not calling or setting the object up correctly. Am I missing something? I sincerely appreciate everyones help and will promise to give big kudos to anyone who can help me along. I am almost there. THis is very difficult for me and I know it's a tough scenario because no one seems to have a solution posted anywhere on this forum.

When I publish my site on one specific page where I've added {tag_pagecontent} I get the error:
'Some files on the server may be missing or incorrect. Clear browser cache and try again. If the problem persists please contact website author.'
I'm trying to get a blog module going, I've even deleted the html insert bog with the tag in and re-published which then I don't get the error but as a result no blog either. But then I add the tag in again and publish the error comes back. I've used the dev console and it says that my musicians sample.css is out of date but why is it only out of date when I add in html to my muse site?
HELP!!!! I've searched other threads and to no avail I'm publishing so no direct ftp going on. the only thing I changed in business catalyst was the module stylesheet in order to style the blog. I've tried uploading and replacing all files nothing seems to work. the site is here:
    http://www.musicstudentsforhire.co.uk/musicians-samples.html
It's only this page as it has the blog on. Also I've noticed when I've re-published occasionally it will show the mobile version on my desktop and not the desktop version??? no idea why that's happening so I've had to turn that off. any explanation on why that is happening would also be much appreciated.

I haven't received an answer as of yet, I'll post t on here when I do. I de-activated the mobile site because it's my clients site so he needs it to be operational during the day. I hope someone gives me an answer soon.

  • Where are iPoto modified files stored on my computer?

When I go to Music/iTunes/, I can find a subfolder that includes many subfolders of Albums, Artist names, and the songs I put into iTunes. Same thing with email files. When I go to Pictures/: I can see an iPhoto Library icon (but no /subfolders) which I assume contains all the files in some kind of compressed archive.
My backup harddrive crashed (where I stored my iPhoto subfolders) and I found two iPhoto Library icons, one sized 2.2 MB and one sized 5.7 MB? The bigger one would not import pictures, only the smaller.
I would like to know where my modified photo files are stored in the my main harddrive,

Thanks Terrence, that solved my question.
Before the two replies I received, I had double clicked on the smaller file and it started importing. I immediately stopped that import and started importing (from where, I could not tell) using the larger Library, and it took all night to do so. Thankfully: the files were GB, not MB. However the import created thousands of Faces (which I had never tried to do), so now it is 8.75 GB in size.
Then I checked my post and found your solution. I control-clicked on both Libraries, and followed your helpful instruction to not change anything, but looked around to see what was there. The smaller Library had separate folders for each year from 1999 to 2006. So, I assumed it was an older Library containing noting past 2007. Looking in those yearly folders only resulted in what appeared to be subfolders of data files. When I looked into the larger library, it had the same folders (1999-2006 only), but it had imported photos from 2007 thru 2010 also?? Looking around for those years, I found a folder called "Originals" which contained subfolders for 2000,3,4,& 6-2010 only. In those folders were jpegs of a lot of my later photos.
Therefore, I assume that the "Original" folder contained photos that had been modified and were now "enhanced originals", but it still seems funny that the Library did not contain folders separately named "2007" - "2010" to keep track (data files) of those photos.
Looks like I have all my thousands of photos, but since I am an inquisitive engineer, are my assumptions correct, and is that archival folder methodology I just described (previous paragraph) something that is going to create a problem?

  • Scenario or adapter to sending a text file to different target directories

    Hi experts
In XI 3.0 I have developed a file2file scenario that takes a comma-separated file (*.csv) and converts it and returns a text file that is sent to a specific directory, the name input file determines the Target Directory, for each input file there is a sender channel and receiver channel that put the output file in the Target Directory. The problem is that i have many channels and not know how to make only one sender channel which takes the input file and the receiver channel to sends the output file to the destination directory through the file name. e.g. VTAS03.csv file located in target directory //work becomes in Clients.txt file in the directory //sap03 ie //work/VTAS03.csv --> //sap03/Clients.txt while the file VTAS05.csv must go to the directory //sap05 i.e. //work/VTAS05.csv --> //sap05/Clients.txt, //work/VTAS07.csv --> //sap07/Clients.txt so on.
In short the output file name is the same for all but must go to different directories according to the input file name without using as many channels of communication.
Someone can help me or tell me how to do this?
    Thanks

    Liz,
Please use the below steps if you are considering of using mapping program.
Select the check boxes for the following Adapter Specific Message attributes in
    Sender Channel - FILE
    Receiver Channel - DIRECTORY
Put the file name as Clients.txt in receiver channel , and directory name can be anything like TEST
    DynamicConfiguration conf = (DynamicConfiguration) container

  • When i send a file over iChat to another mac it compresses the file, where is this compressed file stored?

Today i was transfering a few folders with pictures and videos over to another mac and I noticed that before i sent the file iChat would compress it.  Now this is understandable because they were fairly large files, over 2GB, and this would make them transfer faster.  The problem is that I was transfering the files because my mac is low on hard drive space and I was trying to free some up.  By compressing the files first it was using up more space on my hard drive and I quickly cancelled the compression.  I soon realized though that my hard drive space was still disappearing into thin air. I only had 6GB left and was running out fast.  As it reached 2GB I began to quickly delete large files I no longer needed hoping that I wouldn't run out of space. It dropped all the way down to 12.4MB before it finally stopped, even with me deleting files.  I'm not quite sure what was happening to all of my hard drive space, but was wondering if maybe iChat continued to compress the files even after I cancelled the compression.  Anyways if anyone knows why this happened or where iChat stores the files it compresses that would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I have heard of this before.
One report suggested it was only PDF files their case.
I cannot replicate it with any pic files (Over 2Gb) PDF or otherwise or files and folders combos.
My tests were from Lion/iChat 6.0.3 to Snow Leopard (iChat 5.0.3)
I would have thought iChat would have created the Zippped/Stuffed files in the same folder as the original items
(i.e pic in the pictures folder (or relevant subfolder) and other files and documents in the Documents folder.
With any application that does Stuffing/Zipping it will create temporary space for doing so.
Much like the way a graphics app creates a Scratch file to keep the 20 or so Undos it works with.  (with graphic Apps you can make the Scratch file on another Drive if you have one which can help)
    Do this:-
with iChat Open go to the Window Menu.
    Select the File transfers item
In this Window (that pops up) select the File that was going to be Transferred.
When it is highlighted then do a Right-Click or Control Click and select the option to Show in Finder
Does it list the zipped file ?

  • Using Target disk mode from hard drive which is starting to fail, when I move files, I get a preparing to copy message but nothing happens. Any ideas?

Hello, i have a MacBook Pro. The hard drive is failing to such an extent that I can't currently use the computer, only things like utility mode etc. I have connected it unto my iMac and using a Firewire in target disk mode, I am attempting to move files across using that mode. The HD of the Macbook Pro appears in the IMac devices menu and I copy and paste the appropriate folders/files but as I do this I get a progress bar which says "preparing to copy" but then nothing appears to happen. Any ideas on what to do? Is there a password or other issue here that I am over-looking. Perhaps the hard drive of my macbook pro is so corrupted that I can't move files over. Any help would be great?

Try moving smaller groups of files. I' guessing that you don't have a backup huh?
