Where is iPhoto 8

I had to perform an Erase and install on my iMac running Mac OS 10.5.8. Now I can't find iPhoto 8, Garage band or any of the iLife apps that came with my Mac? I Looked for them on the install disk that came with my Mac and I can't find them. Can someone tell me where I can find iLife 08?

See if you have anything like the iMac disk.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

Photos uploaded to my Web Gallery show up where in iPhoto??

I created a Web Gallery and asked my family to add to it - which they have done. I see the photos in iPhoto under the 'MOBILEME GALLERY' in the sidebar - but they are not in any of the Events. When I try to manually add the photo, it says it's already in the library?!!?
I have tried labeling the photos and then finding them via an iPhoto search, but they just aren't there.

Yes - that was one of the 1st things I tried. I also gave the photos specific keywords only used on those photos, "yellow" for example. Searching photos for any photo having the keyword "yellow" shows no results.
If I right click on the photos in the MOBILEME GALLERY sidebar of iPhoto and click 'Show File' - it opens a folder named 'Jan 18, 2008', and the photos are sitting there.
Dragging the actual files to a new gallery gives the same warning, that the files are already in the library.

Where is iPhoto on my MacBook? I thought iPhoto was standard to Apple products, but I bought this MacBook and it has no iPhoto. Is that unusual?

The first owner should have given you all installation media as well. If the System installation CD/DVD includes the iLife applications, you can install them from this by installing only the bundled iLife applications.
Also, if the original system did not include the iLife apps, and the prevoius bought them separately, he/she has to erase them before selling the mac, as required by the licence.
But the version of iPhoto that came with the mac, if any, will probably only be iLife '9 and not iLife '11.
To get the full use out of iPhoto with your current Mac OS Version Mt. Lion, you would be much better of by buying the current version iPhoto '11 from the App Store. The upgrade from iLife '9 and not iLife '11 is not free, it is a major new release. And Mt. Lion does not include the iLife applications. They have to be bought separately.

Where does iPhoto save the time for each photo?

I copied some photos from the library to my desktop, ran software to add an hour to several at once (forgot daylight savings time), deleted the original photos from iPhoto, and re-imported the new copy with the new times back into the library.
I was very surprised to see the information window on the bottom left side of the iPhoto window still showed the old time. Even more confusing is that if I bring up the main info window (CMD-I), the time indicated there is the time I corrected to.
Why do these times not match? Where is iPhoto keeping the old times?

Other users have reported that also. I've used PhotoInfo to change time and dates of file and upon importing back into iPhoto they are reported as changed in both the Source window info section and in the Get Info window's Photo section. Don't know why I can do it and the other users were not able to.
I just dragged the photos from the thumbnail window to the desktop, launched PhotoInfo, went to the File->Open menu and select the file. I then changed the time and clicked on Change button. Upon importing into iPhoto the date displayed as changed. If you didn't use PhotoInfo you might give it a try.

I want to know where to locate all the pictures I've downloaded to Iphoto so I can organize them to folders outside of Iphoto, I want to use Aperature and maybe Bridge by Adobe to organize them in the future. I have over 30,000 pictures I've taken now. When I look in harddrive under pictures it is only showing me 1000 pictures. Where is Iphoto stashing the rest of them?

You can use any connection - firewire, USB, Network or even drag the iPhoto library to an external drive and then move it to the other computer

Sort of - you cancan not use it as an external drive since Time Machine will eventaually totally fill it locking all other uses out -- you can use it (if there is space available) to move a file between systems on a one shot basis - the TC is simply an external drive - it is the software (Time Machine) that makes using it as an EHD impossible
Would I be better off just buying an external hard drive larger that the passport to move between machines?
If your current EHD is too small for what you want to use it for then yes, the solulition is to get a large enough one

Where does Iphoto store ratings, arrangement of photos, events, libraries?

Hi, I currently have Leopard, I was planning on doing a clean install with Snow Leopard soon. Afterwards I plan on restoring Iphoto back to the way it was. I have a 70 gb library and importing my photos, rearranging the events, photos, and libraries would take ages if I had to start from scratch. I have my whole computer backed up using Carbon Copy Cloner. My question is where does Iphoto store the ratings, manual arrangement of photos, events, libraries, etc? Thanks

iPhoto is a relational database program and everything is stored in the iPhoto library - it must be treated as a single entity - it is not possible to isolate components in it - simply drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the clone back to the pictures folder of the main computer
To test prior to doing an erase and install (the Mac does not have a "clean install") you can depress the option key and launch iPhoto and select the backup copy and test it - be sure to do an option launch and paint back to the main library afterwards

Where does iphoto place photos when imported

I have been importing photos of a recent trip and need to move them off the hard drive to save space. Where does iPhoto put them and can I access them from an external drive within iPhoto?

By default they are copied to the iPhoto library - but you do not touch them there
you can run iPhoto off of and external drive -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
After doing this you can delete some photos from the old library instead of deleting the whole library (deleting and emptying the iPhoto trash and the system trash every 100 or so photos ) so you have some of your photos on your main drive and all of them on the external drive - switch libraries using the command-lanch
If you do this you will find iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - very helpful in managing the multiple libraries

Those Apps would not transfer from your iPhone because the iPhone apps are iOS 5 based and the iMac apps are OSX based. They are not the same Apps. You will need to transfer the OSX based apps over from your external hardware backup you have kept up, Or you can reinstall the OSX based apps from their original DVD's.

Where does iPhoto 9 iLife 11 store the original images

Hi, where does iPhoto 9.4.3 (under OS 10.7) store my original photos?
I used to be able to drag out a copy of my originals from iphoto.app (show package contents), but now it doesn't seem to be there or is otherwise hidden.
I reviewed some long confusing threads on this...
I don't need further debates to confuse the answer to this simple question...
I just want to find the iphoto images folder so I can drag and drop a copy for backup.
If you know how to navigate to the originals images under 10.7, ilife 11 -- please let me know.

By default the images are stored in the iPhoto Library, in your Pictures Folder.
You do not drag them out for back up.
Use the File -> Export command. In the resulting dialogue set the Kind to Original and that will yield an exact copy of the original file to back up.
To back up the Library - that is, original images plus all the work you've done - edits, metadata, albums etc:
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

Where does iphoto put the library?

where does iphoto put the library?
i thought it would be put in the pictures folder but at least in my case it is not there! the folder is empty.
I can import pictures and they show in iphoto and frontrow but I would simply like to know where on my harddisk they end up.

No! Don't make anew library it will overwrite your old one.
It's there somewhere, it's just that it's visibility status has changed (why??)
Anyway try the following:
go to http://www.cocoatech.com and download Pathfinder. This is an alternative to the Finder - and it has extra features, among them a View-> Show Invisible Items command. This might help us find it.
Pathfinder is shareware, but you can use it for a trial period without paying.

Installed snow, where is iphoto?

i can't believe i'm posting this.
i've installed snow leopard, and where is iphoto?
i did a standard installation from the box set. is it part of ilife? if so where is ilife?

The iPhoto Library can only be opened with the application. To access photos for use outside of iPhoto read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access.
To bring your library over to the boot drive just copy the iPhoto Library package over to the Pictures folder on the boot drive.
You can try dragging the applications over from your backup Applications folder but I'm not sure it will work. Installing from the disk it came on also installs support files, etc. that are needed. But give it a try anyway since you've stated that the library on the backup opens OK when you double click on it.

I've imported photos and movie clips from my camera through usb through iPhoto.
Where does iPhoto save these files?
I've opened iMovie to find the movie clip and I can't find it anywhere...
also: after editing a photo in iMovie, how do you "save" it?

You’ve a bit of a learning curve ahead of you as you obviously haven’t really understood iPhoto, what it is and how it works. You could do yourself a favour and have a look at the tutorials at http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#iphoto
To specific cases:
When you press "done" it doesn't save it (find the photo in its original file and open it with Preview, you'll see it hasn't been saved).
Yes, but it has! You see iPhoto will always preserve your Original file. So when you make edits it carries out these on copy of the file. You can see this in the iPhoto Window. There is no way to make iPhoto edit the original file.
I have opted for iPhoto not to duplicate my photos and keep its own library (to me that doesn't make any sense, my photos are about 15GB, I wouldn't want them to turn into 30GB for no reason!),
1. The best solution for that it to allow iPhoto to copy the files into the Library and then remove your own copies.
2. When you go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import', you are running what is called a Referenced Library. In a Referenced Library iPhoto will not copy the files on import, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this
it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file.
It will still create a thumbnail and,
if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

Because you told it not to. When you run a Referenced Library +you are responsible for File Management+. Remember that bit above where I said

You need to put the files where you want them, then import them to iPhoto. Iphoto has no control over any file outside the Library Package. So when it comes to deleting things you’ll need to remove the pics from iPhoto and then go and root them out from your folder structure by hand.
None of this is the case if you run a Managed Library.

What do you mean by a “virtual library”?
and in a year's time I change laptops I run the risk of loosing photos as I won't know which photos are were (now I can do a back up to an external drive simply by copying the folders I choose from the pictures folder.
If you run a Managed Library then backing up and migrating are both very simple. You simply back up the iPhoto Library or move it as the case may be. There are many, many back up utilities that will do incremental back ups if the Library: Time Machine, DejaVu Chronosync are several but there are a hundred more. Search on MacUpdate.
If you run a Referenced Library you must +back up the Originals and the iPhoto Library+ (to get your Albums, Modified Versions and so on). Migrating rto a new machine is a bear too, as you cannot allow the path to the files to alter. (See my pitfall no. 3 above.
Worst of all: a mixed Managed/Referenced Library: a recipe for data loss.
My strongest advice to you is to start over with iPhoto. Create a new Library: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' and import 100 pics into it and explore it for a week or two. Get to know the ins and outs a bit and se how it works. Then decide if it’s the right app for you. By all means post back if you need more info.

Upgraded to Mountain Lion. Where's iPhoto?

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion a few days ago and I can't find iPhoto. I read on another thread that I can log in with my Apple ID, click on options before purchasing and I should be able to download it free.
Well, I signed into the App Store and I think I used a different ID because when I check my Order History, it says that nothing was purchased in the last 90 days. It's possible I have two Apple ID's so I wanted to log out of that account and try signing in under another possible one. BUT WHERE'S THE LOG OUT? I can't find it to save my life.
Other than that, doesn't iPhoto come with Mountain Lion? I had it with my previous OS before upgrading. Thanks for any help!

iPhoto comes with your Mac. What version of OS X came installed on your Mac when you bought it?
If it came with any version of OS X before Lion came out then you will need to re-install iPhoto from the Applications disc that came with your Mac and then Update it through Software Update.
Like if Snow Leopard or Leopard was Pre-Installed on your Mac when you bought it, it came with 2 System Restore/Re-Install Discs. One for the OS and one for the iLife Apps, IE the Applications disc.
If you don't have them then there are 2 ways to get iPhoto and the other iLife Apps reinstalled on your system.
1) You call Apple and order a replacement set of System Discs at a small fee/charge.
2) Buy it and the other iLife Apps, if you want them, from the Mac App Store.
Or Option 3. If you know someone that has a similar year Mac and they still have their original System Re-Install/Restore discs you could try to use theirs to Reinstall the iLife Apps.
If your system came with Lion then you can get them from the Mac App Store for free but you must log in to the store with the same Apple ID you used when you first registered that Mac with the App Store.

I know how to empty my iPhoto Trash but I can't find the bin. I have iPhoto 7.1.3. I can't find anything in the Preferences to tell me where Trash is. I would like to see what's in the trash before emptying.

Where is iPhoto Location information stored for third-party plug-ins/export

I use Smugmug for my photos. There is a standalone Smugmug uploader called MacDaddy that can upload photos from iPhoto and a plug-in that adds to the Export menu and uploads straight from iPhoto. Neither of these manages to get the GPS information, though. Does the built-in Flickr uploader successfully include GPS information? If I export photos from iPhoto and check Include Location Info, and then upload it works fine. So where is the Places info stored and how would a third-party uploader access it so that I could directly upload from iPhoto without having to first export?
I sent them the AlbumData.xml and it didn't seem to be available there. Any help would be appreciated.

I just today went through this with Picasa Web Albums. I'll tell you how I got that to work.
First in iPhoto if you select your photos (I'd use an album or smart album to collect them) you can click on File > Export > and choose File Export in the bar on the Export window. At that point you can choose to include Location Information. Export your photos to some file of your choice. At that point they are normal jpeg files with L/L info.
Now I presume Smugmug has an uploader you can use from there.
This isn't slick but it seems to give me more freedom than the Picasa add-on for iPhoto. Of course I don't have the synchronization I understand the Flickr built in uploader gives but I don't believe I want that anyway.
