Which AirPort for me (if any)?

Hello and thank you if you can help and sorry if my terminology is wrong however hopefully you know what I mean...
I have finally found a mediocre internet provider, quite an achievement given the fact that I live in the UK where they are all pathetic.
However it comes with a single box (BrightBox) that does the job of collecting the internet from the ISP and making it into a WiFi service.
The range of the WiFi is unacceptable - I am wondering if I can use an AirPort product to take this job away from the BrightBox whilst obviously still letting the BrightBox get my internet from the ISP. In other words I want to use a wire to connect the BrightBox to the AirPort device and let this device transmit the WiFi signal. Is this what it is for?
Also, will it extend my range considering the BrightBox WiFi slows down after moving about 2 rooms away?
And finally which device would you recommend for a medium sized house with a lot of other WiFi networks and other inteference (out of my control) nearby?
Thanks very much!!

Most ISPs supply the cheapest possible junk they can find. Any of Apple's AirPort Base Stations are likely to be much more capable.

Yes.

Perhaps. Predictions regarding Wi-Fi performance are impossible to make without knowledge of one's particular wireless environment.

  • Which Airport for my PowerBook G4?

    Hi..
I would like to connect Airport Extreme or Express to my old Power Book G4 running on Mac OS x (10.3.9) running on 550 Mhz. 256 MB Ram to a NTL connection.
Which hardware do I need to buy, as I've been told my computer is kinda old now!
I wanna know because I'm hopefully going to get a new G5 Imac as my main computer, but with the spare Power book G4 i want to make wireless around the house!
I'm just confused to which will make the above easier as I'm unsure what extreme or express does?
    Many Thanks

Pipex are pretty good. Personally I've always hated AOL - it's a very very clumsy interface and they go to a great deal of trouble to control how you use the net.
If Pipex give you the option of a wireless router then you may as well get that. Alternatively, I can definitely recommend the Netgear DG834G. Both the new imac and the Powerbook (when you put a card in it) will work wirelessly with it. shop around for a price, it is about £60 with free delivery from Amazon.
The DG834g has built in wireless, adsl modem (plugs straight into adsl line) and 4 ports - so you could wire your imac to it if it is close enough.
    As for making the Powerbook wireless, the best and easiest option is to get a PCMCIA wireless card. An Airport card will just cost more to do the same job in what is gradually turning into an old machine. Apple airport uses the broadcom chipset, so a broadcom chipset based card will act just like a native Airport card in your mac. the main company using broadcom chipsets is Sonnet. They have a card called the Sonnett Aria Extreme PCMCIA - It is £50 here;
    http://www.macheaven.co.uk/?page=proddetail∏=1344
and might be a bit cheaper if you shop around or know anyone in the US who can get one for you.
I hope that helps. Pipex may offer a USB modem as part of setup, it's not worth having - very difficult to get from that to wireless networking, although if you are really stuck for cash you could attach the imac with usb to the net and then sgare that connection with the Powerbook - which would save you the cost of the router - but you'd basically be using the desktop as a router which would have to be left on all the time. Personally I'd go with the Netgear.
Also - Pipex have a deal whereby if you swicth your phone calls over through them they give you cheap rates and 1000-3000 mins for £4 per month or so - you might want to look into that at the same time - cheaper than BT if you use the phone much - and international rates are pretty good. You don't lose your BT line, just route the actual calls via Pipex - so you have a fixed/low cost for the actual calls.
That's all I can think of for now, sorry there isn't a cheaper solution. I hope that helps.
    Best of luck.

  • Which Airport for wireless dialup?

I am moving and my new area does not have DSL. I will need to use a dial up service and I my Ibook G4 has an Airport Extreme card that I have been using with my DSL modem. I will need to buy an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station or the oval shaped one with a modem...Which one do I need to use my Ibook wirelessly? thanks!

You'll need the saucer-shaped Airport Extreme Base Station.

Which Airport is suitable for Full-hd streaming?

Any of them will be suitable, but for streaming within your LAN I'd recommend either the Extreme or Time Capsule since they use Gigabit Ethernet.

  • Which Airport card do I need for an iMac G4 Flat Screen 15"?

Hi, I have an iMac G4 (flat screen, with silver arm and round base), 15".
I'd be extremely grateful if someone could let me know which Airport card I need for this Mac and also whether or not I also require an adaptor. I have looked this up on the Apple site and also in 'The Flatscreen iMac for Dummies' book (I'm a complete technophobe, I'm afraid!), but am none the wiser.
If possible, model numbers for the Airport card and adaptor that I do need would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Jeremy

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and click on More Info, or if you're running Mac OS 9, choose Apple System Profiler from the Apple menu. Check the speed of the computer's CPU; if it is below 1GHz, you need the regular AirPort card, with the AirPort Extreme card being used on newer iMacs. No iMac G4 requires an adaptor to use an AirPort card.

Frozen warning located at upper left corner of pages app which says "There aren't any warnings for this document". Cannot seem to be able to close this window. It interferes with my ability to use pages, as it always remains in front of all documents I am working on. Any suggestions on how to remove this frozen warning?

Usually it is not frozen as such it is just waiting for you to click on OK somewhere.
Check if there isn't a button or window somewhere or whether Enter will clear it.

nas on airport extreme not recognized by time machine. same nas was previously used as time machine backup on different airport extreme. are there any configuration files that i can delete to fix this problem ?

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

  • Help...Can't figure out which AirPort card I need...

I need help figuring out which is the correct AirPort card for my old emac. (see specs below)
I don't know if this model is too old. I don't know how to tell if the emac is "ATI Graphics" or "USB 2.0." These are listed separately as two different emac models in the "compatible" computers for the AirPort Express card.
Any help/direction would be GREATLY appreciated!

  • Since upgrading to Lion 10.7.3 my USB ports don't work for anything. Any ideas?

I have been a long-term (nearly 25 years) Apple User, so am reasonably familiar with the system. I upgraded about 1 week ago with an automatic update to Lion and since then I have had massive problems using the USB ports on my Mac Pro (which is from 2009). At first this affected every USB port and I couldn't use my keyboard or mouse, but since restarting a couple of times, and repeatedly inserting and removing them into the various rear ports, I can use these plugged in via monitor cable.
However, the USB ports for other devices are extremely problematic and frustrating as nothing seems to work consistently on them. This affects all devices that I usually access (and which all worked seamlessly before upgrade), including my iPhone (which will power up but not be recognized when plugged into any front or rear port), external drives, cameras, and my printer. However, for the printer only (a Brother MFC 9840) it will work some times if I restart the computer, but not others. I have tried rebooting, switching ports, using other cables, changing power cords. I have read multiple threads on USB issues with Lion for a solution including those to do with printers (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3301218?start=0&tstart=0), those to do with external drives (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3510032?start=30&tstart=0), and even those to to with modems (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3164614?start=0&tstart=0). Despite this, I note that there appear to be no consistent solutions reported and that in other support threads including reseting PRAM. I do see many more problems than I would have expected.
I don't know if this is related, but after the upgrade I also had problems with Outlook not working, but for some reason that seemed to stop after a couple of days. Just in case I also checked to see if I was affected by the malware program (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3856206?tstart=30), but thankfully I am not.
I am sure this has to do with the upgrade to Lion 10.7.3, and have been expecting something from Apple to address these issues, but nothing so far. I am completely lost for solutions, and any help gratefully received.
Slightly unrelated, but again speaking to a possible change in culture in Apple that has seen upgrades cause more problems than they solve, I am also affected by the change from MobileMe to iCloud and the loss of push e-mail. For those not aware, this has been an issue for more than 6 months, and on the discussion there are now 35 pages of comments, and no solution in sight (https://discussions.apple.com/message/18050375?ac_cid=142432#18050375).

Generally speaking, a full recharge and reboot after the recharge will solve the issue with the ports.  Many ports will also start to fail if you leave devices hooked up to them when the machine is asleep.  Unfortunately, many non-Apple devices don't understand the low power mode ports go into after Energy Saver is woken up, and only a reboot solves that problem.

  • Use airport for internet and ethernet for local?

Hi. Ive searched around and cant find an answer for this.
I have a 27" imac connected to my router and all works fine for accessing the internet.
I have several other devices close by that I want to connect via ethernet. If i connect the imac to another router via ethernet I can browse my local devices but loose internet connectivity. It is as if the imac will suspend the airport connection while the ethernet cable is connected. I don't want my second router to act as a bridge as it doesn't support N speeds.
Essentially, I want the imac to use airport for internet and the ethernet port for local files.... The only workaround I have is to unplug the ethernet cable from the back of the imac when i want to use the internet. I'm hoping it's just a DNS issue, but cant seem to resolve it.
I do not need internet connectivity for the other devices and don't see how i can do that without enabling the wireless side of my second router and then creating a bridge...
    Any suggestions?

It is as if the imac will suspend the airport connection while the ethernet cable is connected.
The Connection Order on your iMac is set so that if both AirPort and Ethernet are "on", the iMac will give priority to the Ethernet connection.
If you want to configure your iMac so that it gives priority to an AirPort connection if both AirPort and Ethernet are "on", give this a try:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and open Network
Click on the small gear icon at the bottom of the connection list on the left
Click on Set Service Order and drag AirPort to the top of the connection order list
    Click OK, then click Apply
Now, if both AirPort and Ethernet are active, your iMac will give priority to the AirPort connection. If you want to connect using Ethernet, you will have to turn AirPort off by clicking the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of your computer screen.

  • Internet working but can't access AirPort for configuration changes

I have an AirPort Express and it connects to the internet properly through my cable modem -- solid green light and all -- and allows my PC to surf wirelessly.
    Sounds pretty good, but...
For some reason I can't access the AirPort Express to change any of the settings. For example, I would like to change the SSID and the IP numbering scheme to give out 192 IPs, but when I open the Admin Utility I can't see the AirPort Express. When I try to access it manually in the utility by hitting "Other..." and entering the IP that my PC is assigned on the network (10.0.1.2), it puts up a window that says "Reading configuration from base station", then an error message with code -6753.
I know it is working, otherwise I wouldn't be writing this right now, but how to I access it???
Thanks in advance for someone helping me out.

journey778, Welcome to the discussion area!
Your system information states OS 10.0.x. If you are using that version of OS X you do not have an Intel based iMac. I would suggest that you upgrade to OS 10.2 at least.
If you do have an Intel based iMac, you may want to try renewing the DHCP lease. Open System Preferences->Ethernet->Advanced... and click on the "Renew DHCP Lease".

  • I want to use AirPlay and share an external hard drive, which AirPort should I use?

I am looking into buying an AirPort. I want to be able to share an external hard drive over it and use the AirPlay feature (by plugging in my speakers through an audio jack). It seems that the hard drive feature is only available on the extreme and the AirPlay feature is only available on the express. Are there any ways around this, and does anyone have suggestions on which AirPort to buy to achieve this?

If you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, the files will be copied to your hard disk and all the organization done in iPhoto09 will be carried forward to Organizer catalog. This can be done if you have enough space on your hard disk. However if you want to use Organizer solely + not create duplicate copies of your images, you can import photos directly from the Hard Disk. Ensure to write all metadata to files within iPhoto so that when the same photos are imported into Organizer, the tagging done is brought along.
    Thanks
