  • Is RMI the most suitable technology for....

    Hi,
I'm wondering if RMI is the most suitable technology for the following application....
I wish to make an filetransfer application that should be able to send large ASCII files in smaller chunks, compressed with GZIP and with re-transmission if the connection failes. The application should be able to handle several simultanious communications. With my (limited) experience I have 2 ways to go.. either a socketbased solution or RMI to send the serialized datachunks. Or are there other Java technologies that is better to use?
The application should preferably run as a service in an Windows environment(NT, W2K, XP...) so I also have to think of how to deploy this as easy as possible. I don't want to use J2EE or similar. I want to make it as simple as possible.
Any thoughts what's the perfert Java technology to use? RMI?
    Regards
    Bjrnar Selsbak

OK. I was mainly questioning whether there were firewalls in the way.
Not clear to me if your application is truely client server: clients making - I guess upload or download requests to a server, then passing or fetching file info and content.
I've implemented something like this - big volumes (gigabytes), and it works pretty well. The recovery scheme was to start the particular (failing) file all over again. You are going to have to figure out your own recovery scheme - RMI does none of that for you.

  • IDE for EJB's

    Hi there
I'm looking for IDE's for EJB development.
Best would be if it support UML notation or any other modeling language
if you know any, please let me now
    thanks
    Thomas

There are quite a few available, you can try Oracle's JDeveloper, you can
download it from oracle for free (evaluation), you can also try ArgoUML,
that you can get from www.sourceforge.net or www.freshmeat.com . It's an
opensource utility written in java that resamlbes Rational Rose. Hope that
    helps.

who cares, so long as you're comfortable with it.Except that many companies forces you to use a certain IDE.Not ones I've worked. They're happy to let you use your own as long as they don't have to pay for it.Well, based on my knowledge, some do. I've worked for two financial institutions, and they were real sticklers for using the approved tools, and only the approved tools. Get caught using anything else more than a couple of times, and you'd probably be looking at the street.
Other companies I've worked for, didn't care much, as long as it didn't cost them too much (if anything) in licenses.

  • [Survey] Which features do you want for EJB 3.0 modeling ?

JDeveloper is currently looking/considering at modeling capabilities to support EJB 3.0 session beans and JPA entities. The modeler might let you view and/or edit the EJB components and their related artifacts, like database objects, related classes, and so on. What features of an EJB 3.0 / JPA modeler would you find most useful?
This is your chance to influence this feature set.
Let us know what are the top features (in this category) that you would like to see by posting them on this thread.
    Thanks,
    The JDeveloper Team.

OK... here's the latest on my lab environment/server set up. We have a 17" iMac G5. It is connected to a 24 port 10/100 switch with two gigabit ports. The iMac gets a gigabit port; the eleven eMacs get 10/100 ports. There is an internal 160 GB SATA hard drive installed in the iMac, and a 160 GB external firewire drive connected to the iMac for back-up purposes. I haven't got the back-up software running yet, but plans are to back up user information on the external hard drive and create an archive of server OS set up and software on DVD in case of catastrophic failure.
Since our 30+ Windows boxes are served with your basic Dell Optiplex running Windows Server 2003 and an old, cranky Gateway running Linux, I didn't think our little Mac lab would suffer that much under an iMac server. So far it's been smooth sailing, and the whole set-up, iMac, server software, and external hard drive, were under $2000.

  • Most suitable filesystem for an SSD disk?

I'm thinking of getting a Solid State Drive, such as the new OCZ ones... price/gb is really coming down now.
Gonna put it in my laptop, and use an external drive for everything else. So what's the best filesystem for an SSD drive? One without journaling? Or what do you think guys?

wuischke wrote:jffs2 or other flash file systems are not a good idea in this case, because they assume direct access to the flash memory. SSD disks implement much of the functionality in firmware and use an SATA/IDE interface, i.e. they already deliver an abstraction which makes the use of a flash file system uneccessary.
    Interesting, good stuff.
    I'll read the Acer thread!

  • Which Adobe product is most suitable for sketches?

I want to add color, texture and realism to my A4 size paper sketches . Which is the most suitable product for this process?

    Welcome to the forum, Thomas!
The best application depends in part on what you ultimately want to do with your sketches.
For example, Adobe Illustrator uses vectors as the building blocks of its files. Vectors can be enlarged a lot and still look crisp and clear:
On the other hand, Adobe Photoshop mostly uses rasters as the building blocks of its files. If you enlarge a raster file too much, it can look unpleasantly jaggy:
For more on the difference between vectors and rasters, see the short explanation at http://www.adobe.com/designcenter-archive/keyconcepts/articles/concept_raster.html
To see how Von Glitschka, a professional artist, combines Photoshop and Illustrator to add texture and color to his sketches, go to http://vector.tutsplus.com/articles/interviews/interview-with-von-glitschka/ and scroll down to the question "You use textures in some of your artworks. I know that creation of raster textures is your passion. Tell us a little bit about the process of their creation and integration into vector artwork?"

  • Which Linux is the best for me?

I got the Oracle DBA(OCP) certificate last year and I am learning Linux now.
I don't know which distribution is the most suitable one for me to learn? Fedora8.0, CentOS, RHEL5.0, Suse or other versions?

Again, you need to make a choice.
    - Is this for learning Linux in general?
    - Is this for getting familiar with a Linux desktop?
    - Is this for learning how Oracle interacts with a distribution?
If for Linux in general, look around for a Linux User Group so you can get local help. Probably Fedora, SuSE or Ubuntu.
If for Linux as a desktop, do some research on KDE, gnome and Linux desktops. Pick a distribution that does a good job of the one that appeals to you. I'd guess Ubuntu.
If for Oracle-Linux learning, the I encourage getting a certified Linux or clone. Go to http://www.oracle.com/technology/support/metalink/index.html , select 'by platform', select Linux x86 (and see http://ww.dizwell.com for Linux 64-bit comments), and pick one of the certified distros. (Note that CentOS is a Clone of Red Hat, so it counts as Red Hat.)
You can pick a non-certified Linux if you want to learn Linux & Oracle. But them any time you get into a problem, you will have doubts whether it is the Linux or the steps you use.

  • Suitable BAPI for extended withholding tax

we are migrating from classic withholding tax to extended withholding tax for which we are modifying all the programs which were using MRHR (invoice) in the background, since MRHR will be replaced by MIRO in extended withholding tax, in this process when we are trying to modify one program, we could not record MIRO, hence  our technical team suggested for use of BAPI functional module, kindly anybody suggest me which is the suitable BAPI for posting of invocie verification.
    Thanx in advance.

    Hi Krishna,
Please check BAPI_INCOMINGINVOICE_CREATE and let me know.

If you're developing JSPs and Servlets....
I've found that using Eclipse (which is free) coupled with the MyEclipse plug-in (an advanced J2EE specific plug-in which costs $29.99USD/year) was the best for me. I've tried several free J2EE Eclipse plug-ins, didn't like them. Wasn't a big fan of NetBeans either, but I liked it tons better than the other Eclipse plug-ins.
Therefore, IMHO for free I'd go with NetBeans, for a small fee I'd go with Eclipse/MyEclipse plug-in.
If you are new to J2EE but not to Java, you may want to consider going straight to JSF and Sun's Java Studio Creator. This is not free, but the fee is one-time and development is (mostly) visual using Java Studio Creator.

    Go to crucial.com
Enter your specs, and buy as much as it'll hold. You'll be happy you did. I've been using them for years. Great company, and the best value for RAM in my opinion. And you don't want to mess with cheap RAM. It can mess EVERYTHING up...

  • How will decide which method is suitable for uploading data

    Hi,
How will you decide which method is suitable for uploading data

    Hi,
<li>If you haver very few records, even entering manually is also an option.
<li>In most cases where we need more than 20,000 records , BAPI or Direct input would be the fastest. Here error handling is tough here.
<li>You can use BDC(Session and Call transaction methods), where we can write code to identify error records, if you get error records, those can be reprocessed.
