Which Mac to purchase?

I'm looking to purchase a Macbook Pro to edit HDV video, mainly home movies, and as a desktop replacement. Which of these would you chose if the price was the same and they're both new? Thanks for the help!
17" HiRes, 2.4GHz, 7200RPM, 160GB, 4GB, 10.5 Leopard, iLife '08
or
17" HiRes, 2.4GHz, 4200RPM, 250GB, 4GB, 10.4 Tiger, iLife '06 (w/Leopard Disk)

I would go for the first one...
17" HiRes, 2.4GHz, 7200RPM, 160GB, 4GB, 10.5 Leopard, iLife '08
The iLife 08 might suit your video editing with the few extra new features? Higher RPM, but lower HD - you can always hook up an external HD if you need more HD space, and with the launch of Apples Time Capsule, it's only a matter of time where you will be able to get wireless HD's so I think in the future you'll not be looking for a Laptop or PC with the biggest HD capacity! only my opinion...

  • Which mac to purchase and install the upgrade?

I synch my Touch with 2 separate macs. One for calendar and address book and one for photos and videos.
Does it matter which mac the 2.0 is purchased and installed on?
    Thanks.

It should take about 30 minutes, give or take. But, if you sync your iPod before installing 2.0, then iTunes will automatically backup your iPod (as long as "disable automatic backup" isn't checked in Preferences). So I think all your iCal and address book stuff will still sync back to your iTunes if you sync it on the computer with your music on it

  • Which mac should i purchase...please help!!!!! Its my first mac!

Im in a dilema...I solely want to produce music with Ableton and I will be using Final Cut Pro extensively...im debating on which MAC system to purchase....Im highly interested in the new macbook but im not sure if the laptop will sustain the tasks I want to do...maybe a macbook pro or powerbook? or should i just skip the laptop idea and get an imac or desktop mac! Please help?

any mac would work fine using ableton live, but if you're going to be doing final cut work, you're going to need more graphics power. if you need a portable, the macbook pro should do you fine. a powerbook will work, but with final cut the macbook pro is literally at least 4 or 5 times as fast. if you don't need a portable, either the 20" or 24" imac will work fine, the smaller one doesn't have dedicated graphics, so it won't do. if you are working with serious, professional media or HD media in final cut, the mac pro is the only way to go.

Yes, I think most of us do understand what open source software is. It sounds as if you don't. Here's some information:
Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form: the source code and certain other rights normally reserved forcopyright holders are provided under an open-source license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software.
Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-sourcedevelopment and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements.

Yes, Tom Wu of Stanford wrote a paper on something called Secure Remote Access Protocol. It's a form of Asymetric Key Exchange and has nothing to do with hacking anything. It's actually intended to protect data.

  • HT201897 Does a Mac Mini purchased in the USA require a power converter for operation in Europe or should I only purchase a different power cord for it?

Does a Mac Mini purchased in the USA require a power converter to operate outside of the USA or can I simply purchase a different power cord for it?

Depending on which European country (should their mains access plug/port shape vary) the
cord set with correct ends on it has to match. You can buy a cord that plugs into the Mini
where the factory cord goes, and the other end has one for the wall source shape. The wire
for the application should be able to support 110~240VAC.
With the cord or an accurate image in hand, you could either get a new cable to match both
realities (mini + wall supply mains local) or an adapter (US/Standard to EU/Local) for just
the head or input part of the original Apple cable. One plugs into the other, then into wall.
If you have a new Mini with a small modular plug/port on the computer end of the power wire,
it would have only two holes and no ground; the other end would have two prongs of equal
shape and size. Not a polarized plug and not a grounded three-prong. To get a replacement
power wire for the MINI to go from power source to the Mini is recommended, if you are going
to be staying in one location for awhile. A Travel Kit that offers no electrical conversion but only
the physical shape adapter kit, should a available in travel stores, airports; big box discount
stores, computer and electronic stores. This page shows the cord end of the appliance shapes.
The other end would be the mains shape for whichever country you are going to....
    http://www.signalandpower.com/European-Power-Cords/
So to match the country or regional power mains type is a primary concern for obtaining the
correct replacement cord to supply the Mini with local mains power. The end which plugs into
the Mini is of a certain type (numbers for EU and elsewhere are published, see link + images)
& the end that gets plugged into the mains or utility side, needs to match the local specification.
The link to Apple, to contact for Support and Service information in prior post, should be able
to help find a source for the local replacement type cord they'd sell local people with a Mini.
Apple local sources offer replacements for this purpose; and for travelers, a second cord for
a direct use (not adapter plugs) is a better bet. For those who only need a cord in two places.
If you are traveling to Denmark, UK, Swiss or other EU countries require different adapters.
Even places where the power itself may be somewhat similar. However your MINI has an
automatic power supply that will conform to that energy standard, you only need to supply a
correct non-transforming adapter. Simply a connection to adapt one shape to another.
The general purpose travel kit that is not specialized to Apple power adapters, would have a
plastic plug/adapter with the local pins on one side, and the US/standard two slots on the other.
So, no circuitry nor any other change of electrical power inside this device would be required.
    http://www.signalandpower.com/2-Prong-Plug-Adapters/
    http://www.signalandpower.com/Convert-to-Europe-CEE-716-plug/
    http://www.signalandpower.com/Swiss-AC-Power-Cords/
In other words, I believe my other post already covered this. On the ground on either end of the
path, adapters are common and the Mini does not use proprietary electrical components IF you
have one of the more recent shape aluminum models with the power supply built in. The older
Mini has the power brick and two wires. A US/Standard plug adapter to EU/Local would work in
either case, since all you'd do is plug the adapter plug into the local mains and the US plug into
that one... I see these kinds of discards for as little as 25¢ in thrift stores in Alaska. Or you can
buy a new one. Or you could get a complete cord with correct ends on it, for Mini + local mains.
Hopefully this helps somewhat. The only info missing is which EU country or region is involved.
Their shapes of plug are different, so the adapter end for local supply has to match their standard.
Swiss, Denmark, UK, and others offer different shapes and so on.
The Apple store in the location you are traveling should be able to supply you with a replacement
cable for a modern MINI, that has the correct local mains end, and the correct Apple mini end on
the opposite. Since the unit is automatically switching, the magic is done.
Since I supplied a means to locate any number of Apple stores, authorized service providers &
other Apple related vendors in my earlier reply: https://locate.apple.com/country you could contact
any of them along your route in the City in whichever EU country, to find a local MINI power cable.
    In any event, I'm done...
    Good luck and happy trails...

  • Which Mac should we buy?

    Hi,
We are in the market for a new Mac and don't live near an Apple store. Trying to decide between a new Mac Mini or iMac.
    Here is the main use,
Short videos in High Definition. We record using a Sony HDR-FX7 in 1080i and edit down to about 1 minute to 1 minute 20 seconds. This short video is then sent to iDVD and burned, as well we then transcode to mp4 and flash for web.
We have been using iMovie 6 HD on a dual G4 and while it wasn't the fastest in the world, because the videos are relatively small, it works, mostly. I say mostly because the system crashes often, iMovie 6 crashes often etc.
Time for a new system! iMovie 9 isn't really what we are after so we have decided to go for FCE 4. Now we just have to decide on the new hardware.
The new Mac Mini is intriguing, but is it really powerful enough to handle FCE4? I would think it is because apparently we can run FCE 4 on our G4... Should we look at an iMac? We already have two very nice monitors and external firewire drives. Would the entry level iMac be a better solution?
Anyone out there have any experiences they would like to share with either the mini or iMac and FCE4?
    Cheers!
    Chris

Hello, and welcome to the Apple Discussion forums!
Regarding the Mac mini vs. iMac if you intend to use FCE, there's hardly any question in my mind ... go with an iMac!
    • The integrated video processor in the Mac mini is not ideal for FCE.
    • If you configure a Mac mini as closely as possible to a basic iMac (4GB RAM, 2.6GHz processor, 500GB hard drive, keyboard & mouse), they are +within $52 of each other+ ... and you +still need a display!+
    • The iMac has features no mini can match in any configuration - 3.06GHz i3 processor, discrete ATI Radeo 4670 video processor, LED display
    • The iMac is more powerful and will yield better performance over a longer life than a mini will.
Or you might consider a refurbed 21" Core i3 iMac ... which you can purchase for +even less+ than an upgraded Mac mini! I have a number of refurbed Macs and they are all flawless.

I have a Photopshop Elements 10.0 on my Mac, I purchased it in English, did an upgrade of my Mac to OS Yosemite and suddenly the language of  Photoshop is German. How can I fix this ?

I have found another solution.  I upgraded to Yosemite and found the the App Store version of PSE 10 (which didn't change) was suddenly in German.  Close PSE if it is open.  Use the Finder and go to the PSE 10 application in the Applications folder.  Right click (or ctl-click) on it and select "Show Package Contents".  Then go to Contents>Locales and delete the de_DE folder.  (I imagine you could also rename it to something starting with a letter after "e".  I think PSE is probably using the first language it comes to in this Locale folder.)  Start PSE.  It worked for me.  Hope this helped.

  • Is it legal to convert the music files, which I have purchased in recent months, to the mp3 format and burn them on to a CD so that they can be played in non-apple music devices that dont support the M4A format?

Is it legal to convert the music files, which I have purchased in recent months, to the mp3 format and burn them on to a CD so that they can be played in non-apple music devices that dont support the M4A format?

Yes, of course it is legal.
To convert the format, follow one of these documents:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Save a copy of a song in a new file format
iTunes 11 for Mac: Save a copy of a song in a new file format
Also note that you have the option of buying your files in MP3 format in the first place, from Amazon MP3 or other online retailers.  MP3 files will work in iTunes as well as virtually every other player, program, and device.

  • Which mac for  AutoCAD, SolidWorks & MatLAB

I am a mechanical engineering student and I want to purchase a new laptop. Which mac should I get? I want to run AutoCAD, SolidWorks and MatLAB. Are macs or which macs are sufficient for me? I don't want my laptop to be frozen or hard to run those softwares. Thanks a lot.

It depends if you want to be portable or not, iMac or Macbook Pro probably.
I would first check the software suppliers that you mention for the minimum specs that they suggest to run their software. (don't add them all up, see which required the most). AutoCad and/or Solidworks may specify particular graphics cards to work with their software too, so that may limit a few Mac models
Identify a Mac based on these. Then I would make sure I had a Mac that had at least double the min RAM they require.
Eg, OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) min RAM spec is 2GB. I wouldn't use it with less that 4GB personally.

  • I dont know which Mac OS X 10.4.10 to download

I dont know which Mac OS X to download for my mac. How do I find out which one I need?

YEs it appears you will need to purchase the Tiger upgrade.
I havent personally did an upgrade like that.
Id imagine if you just upgrade your apps, songs and docs should be there.
however, the first thing anyone would recommend is to make a back up of allyour most important an dused files or a complete clone just in case.
    hope that helps.

    Many thanks

How did you install Logic onto your new Mac Book?
From the App store or from the DVD boxed set?
If it was downloaded from the App store then it should already be v9.1.8... and if it isn't you need to call Apple to help you sort this out.
If it was originally from the DVD boxed set then you must update using software updates....
If software updates cannot find Logic to update it then you either have...
Renamed the Logic Pro app in which case rename it back to Logic Pro
    or
The Logic Pro App is not in the applications folder which is where it needs to be to be updated... so move it back there.
